Larry Crafard - The Leads the Warren Commission Lost Part 1 & 2 at Kennedys & King Larry sparked John's interest as it seems he was sort of pushed out of the Warren Commission. Crafard testified before the Warren Commission over the course of three days. Leads were not followed up on. People feel Crafard has some similarities with Oswald. Was he an Oswald imposter? Crafard was tracked down to his sister's in Michigan after JFK and Lee were murdered. Robert Kermit Patterson went to Naval Intelligence in Dallas He reported that he'd seen Oswald in his club but it was Crafard. Waitress Mary Lawrence said she saw Ruby and Crafard together at the B&B Cafe the morning of the assassination. Gloria Fillman confirmed that she went to the B&B Restaurant with Crafard and Ruby. Washburn sat down and plotted out Crafard's timeline after Crafard left Dallas. Earl Ruby described getting a telephone call telling him that Oswald had been shot. When the FBI visited the Carousel Club, Andy Armstrong supplied the FBI with Crafard's mail and notebook. John felt that the FBI was very efficient in trying to find information on Crafard. They did not want to probe Ruby. The American public had to be convinced that the government, police and Warren Commission had things under control. The aim of the Warren Commission was to determine that Oswald was the lone shooter. Crafard's FBI testimony on Thanksgiving Day to the FBI was pretty thorough. Crafard's alibi for 11/22/63 is questionable. Crafard stated in 1st interview that Armstrong had woken him up at the Carousel Club. Incredibly, Crafard undermines his testimony from 1st statement, changed times he had interacted with Armstrong. Armstrong didn't give Crafard an alibi until January of 1964. This alibi didn't match Crafard's testimony. Was Crafard on a bus, headed out of Dealey Plaza, in order to confuse people? Ruby was at the Dallas Morning News at the time of JFK's assassination. Ruby could see Dealey Plaza from the office window. Detective Jim Leavelle arrived at the Tippit murder scene approximately about 1:30 PM. Did Leavelle deal with the 2nd wallet? After Dan Rather saw the Zapruder film, he tried to mislead the public, lying and stating Jack's head shot forward. Was Mary Bledsoe on the bus with Oswald? Did Oswald and a blonde woman get off Mary's bus? Did police board the bus? Was Crafard taken off Mary Beldsoe's bus to help take care of Office Tippit? Was he at the scene when Tippit was shot? Warren Commission's Leon Hubert and Burt Griffin did not feel that Crafard was a shooter. Officer Kenneth Croy arrived on the Tippit scene at the same time as Officer Hill. Bill DeMar testified that he felt he saw Lee Harvey Oswald in the Carousel Club. Could it have been Larry Crafard that he saw? Dan Rather's testimony actually destroys the "Magic Bullet Theory". Did Ruby think there was a plot to murder John Connelly? Was he surprised when he found out JFK had been murdered instead? The Warren Commission requested a search on Crafard's social security number to see where he had been employed. A Carousel Club stripper said that Crafard had a police badge and was impersonating being a police officer. What was hanging up in Tippit's car? Was it a shirt? Was it a jacket? Leavelle stated he didn't realize there was a connection between JFK’s murder and Tippit's murder. Len and John discuss Crafard's timeline into Michigan. This is Part 13 of the mini-series that covers the story of Bobby Baker. Today we continue to tell the story of Don Reynolds, the Maryland insurance broker who who made Bobby Baker a nominal partner in his insurance agency and engaged in other business with Baker. Today, we tell the story of the performance bond related to the D.C. stadium build, with Baker's portion of the commissions disguised and paid in the form of a loan to avoid questions surrounding his conflict of interest in the commission split. Baker would receive $4,000 from Reynolds commissions which totaled around $10,000. Baker's decision to have the receipt of his portion of the commissions take the form of a loan from Reynolds to Baker, was an attempt at further obscuring the nature of the payment and also turning it into a a scheme to avoid income taxes on the receipt. In its ugliest vernacular, it was simply a kickback that Baker received related to the commissions on the performance bond insurance premium. The story gets more complicated as Reynolds agrees to overbill on the insurance bond and collect an additional $35,000 over the original price of the bond, disguising what turned out to be an illegal campaign contribution to the Democratic party. $25,000 of that amount was allegedly intended to be delivered to the Kennedy Johnson campaign fund but was never proven to have arrived there. This mini-series is part of a larger series covering Billy Sol Estes, Mac Wallace, Bobby Baker and other members of Johnson's Texas inner circle. All of these men were quite intertwined around Johnson at the time of the assassination. They were involved in circumstances that were closing in on Johnson too and that provided him great motive in the killing of the President. The story is extraordinary. We began the story of Don Reynolds in Episode 11 whereby Reynolds crafts an arrangement whereby Baker became a nominal VP of his insurance agency (with a non-voting stock interest) in exchange for Baker's help in expanding sales and profits. Commission payments for referrals were also a part of the deal. Reynolds would become friends with Baker and travel on lavish junkets to New York and Miami, living the high life all while cultivating clients made available through Baker's contacts. His tight relationship would lead him to be a bagman too for Baker. Once these and other scandals were revealed during investigation by the Senate Rule and Administration committee's investigation and the work of senator John Williams, the scandal threatened to take the Vice President down politically. Perhaps, if the tragic events of November 22nd had not occurred, these events might have sent Johnson to jail as other indiscretions were also being investigated. Reynolds testimony regarding the stereo and the television advertising kick backed to Johnson were taking place in closed session at a senate office building literally at the moment that the shots rang out in Dealey Plaza. Informed of the president's assassination as the meeting was finishing up, Reynolds shook with the gravity of the situation and the fact that the man he had just accused of engaging in graph...Lyndon Johnson, had just become the most powerful man in the world. Rumors of Johnson's involvement in the assassination began to swirl almost immediately after the President's murder and there is a defined school of thought within the JFK assassination research community that staunchly believes in Johnson's involvement. His involvement in both the assassination and its cover up. If the American dream died in Dealey Plaza on November 22, 1963, then who killed it? According to the crime novelist Terrence McCauley, the JFK assassination was carried out by organized crime. That's the heart of his new novel, Twilight Town, in which McCauley reexamines the JFK assassination in Dallas. But this wasn't Oliver Stone style CIA or shadowy government conspirators, pulling well-oiled strings from their deep state offices. Instead, McCauley argues it was something far more mundane yet chilling: a street-level contract hit executed by mob-connected criminals with intelligence ties. These were the same underworld figures who ran guns to Cuba, operated training camps for Bay of Pigs veterans, and had both the means and motive to eliminate a President they saw as soft on communism and hard on organized crime. In McCauley's vision, America's Camelot ended not through some grand operatic conspiracy, but through the banal efficiency of professional killers.1. The JFK Assassination Was a "Street Crime," Not a High-Level Government Plot "I approach it as the way I thought it was. And that is a contract hit and a street crime, which is ultimately what happened on the streets of Dallas that morning." McCauley argues the assassination was carried out by mob-connected criminals with intelligence ties, not CIA masterminds in smoke-filled rooms.2. Only a Small Group Knew the Full Plan "I think maybe 10 or 20 at the most who knew all the details and much fewer than that who knew exactly what was going to happen and when." McCauley believes the conspiracy was deliberately kept small, citing FBI recordings of Joseph Milteer who said such operations only work with minimal participants.3. Lee Harvey Oswald Didn't Pull the Trigger "I never was able to put a gun in Oswald's hands that day... I don't think he did. No, I think he was involved with the people who did." McCauley argues Oswald was connected to the plotters but wasn't the actual shooter, pointing to inconclusive gunpowder residue tests.4. The Assassination Marked "The End of American Innocence" "It was certainly the end of American innocence, where we thought we were always the good guys, where we were the liberators, and where we were one hope of the world against the ongoing threat of communism." McCauley sees November 22, 1963, as the moment America lost its post-WWII optimism.5. The Cover-Up Happened Because Intelligence Agencies Recognized Their Own Assets "The coverup happened because these organizations looked into it. They realized, well, so-and-so could have this off, and we worked with them for 10 years, let's back away from that." McCauley suggests the cover-up wasn't planned but emerged when agencies discovered their own connected operatives were involved.The American Dream has more lives than cats. It was supposed to have died in November 1963 in Dallas, then in 1968 with the assassinations of MLK and RFK, then in the Fall of Saigon, then at the Watergate Building, then at the Twin Towers on 9/11. And then, of course, there is Trump, who is supposed to have slain the American Dream not once but twice. And yet today, a couple of days before Independence Day, my sense is that the Dream is alive all over America. The promise of individual agency continues to inspire new generations of both native and immigrant Americans. JFK might be gone, but the Dream remains the defining quality of the American experience. As promised we have just published episode two and episode three of our three part interview series with Doug Horne and you can find all three episodes over at JFK The Enduring Secret YouTube channel Doug Horne is an iconic figure in the area of JFK research and investigation. His courageous work while at the Assassination Records Review Board has proven to be one of the most important contributions to the understanding of JFK autopsy evidence. I first met Doug in November 2023, during the week of the 60th anniversary of the assassination. His presentations in Pittsburgh at Duquesne University were Illuminating. After his absence for a time from the more active JFK research community, we were all delighted at seeing him return to engage once again. Fast forward to November 2024, and Doug and I once again crossed paths in Dallas at the JFK Historical Group. It was happenstance and a call from our mutual friend Andrew Iler that brought us together this past week…once again. We spent two days intensely rehashing elements of the case and the autopsy and you are going to hear close to five hours of incredible interview dialogue from Doug that I am certain you won't want to miss. These tapings are spread out over three episodes and they represent a master class about the medical evidence and a candid talk about what it all means. And it all comes directly from Doug.
