Constraints on extragalactic transmitters via Breakthrough Listen by M. A. Garrett et al. on Monday 19 September The Breakthrough Listen Initiative has embarked on a comprehensive SETI survey of nearby stars in the Milky Way that is vastly superior to previous efforts as measured by a wide range of different metrics. SETI surveys traditionally ignore the fact that they are sensitive to many background objects, in addition to the foreground target star. In order to better appreciate and exploit the presence of extragalactic objects in the field of view, the Aladin sky atlas and NED were employed to make a rudimentary census of extragalactic objects that were serendipitously observed with the 100-m Greenbank telescope observing at 1.1-1.9 GHz. For 469 target fields (assuming a FWHM radial field-of-view of 4.2 arcminutes), NED identified a grand total of 143024 extragalactic objects, including various astrophysical exotica e.g. AGN of various types, radio galaxies, interacting galaxies, and one confirmed gravitational lens system. Several nearby galaxies, galaxy groups and galaxy clusters are identified, permitting the parameter space probed by SETI surveys to be significantly extended. Constraints are placed on the luminosity function of potential extraterrestrial transmitters assuming it follows a simple power law and limits on the prevalence of very powerful extraterrestrial transmitters associated with these vast stellar systems are also determined. It is demonstrated that the recent Breakthrough Listen Initiative, and indeed many previous SETI radio surveys, place stronger limits on the prevalence of extraterrestrial intelligence in the distant Universe than is often fully appreciated. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.08147v1
-> https://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/ #aliens #weltall #galaxie #sterne #planeten #clixoom

Even though many of his UFO discoveries have been dismissed by experts, an unflinching Waring continues his research, and he strongly propagates the idea that aliens are visiting Earth frequently to monitor human activities. Now, after spotting a cloud-like UFO, Waring has claimed that the public will make the alien disclosure. In his recent website post, Waring revealed that the cloud-like UFO was spotted in the skies of Hereford, England. According to Waring, the UFO was apparently using the cloud as a cover as it moved across the skies. "It wouldn't surprise me if they had windows or transparent walls that allow the aliens to look down at the people and activities below. Absolutely amazing catch of a perfect disk over England yesterday. Aliens have been around us for thousands of years, but we are wising up, our technology and our intelligence are increasing and they won't be able to hide from us for long," wrote Waring on his website ET Data Base. Reptilian Aliens on Earth? Conspiracy theorists have often alleged that at least three different species of aliens are living among humans. A few days back, Waring, after analyzing a 2018 interview of Lady Gaga had claimed that the American singer could be a reptilian alien. Waring made the assumptions as Gaga expressed her desire to shapeshift during the interview. The claims made by Waring soon went viral, and his followers outlandishly argued that Lady Gaga is an alien being who maintains a good connection with the Illuminati, the hypothetical shadow government that controls the entire world. Breakthrough Listen Scans Kepler-160 System for Alien Technosignatures Link: http://www.sci-news.com/astronomy/breakthrough-listen-kepler-160-system-alien-technosignatures-08575.html Kepler-160 is approximately 3,141 light-years away toward the constellation of Lyra. The Breakthrough Listen Initiative, the largest ever scientific research program aimed at finding evidence of alien civilizations, has conducted a search for artificial radio emission associated with Kepler-160, a system of four planets that includes the newly-discovered habitable-zone planet Kepler-160e. This Sun-like star is about 12% bigger than our Sun, just 1% more luminous, and is home to at least four massive planets: Kepler-160b, c, d and e. The planets Kepler-160b, c and d are between 1.7 and 3.1 times the size of Earth and have orbital periods less than 50 days. The outermost planet, Kepler-160e (also designated KOI-456.04), has a radius of 1.9 times that of the Earth and an orbital period of 378 days. The alien world, found earlier this year in data from NASA's Kepler Space Telescope, is in the habitable zone of the host star and has an estimated surface temperature of minus 28 degrees Celsius (minus 18 degrees Fahrenheit). “This Earth-like planet candidate, given its ideal location in the habitable zone of its host star and edge-on orientation projected toward Earth, represents an ideal target for technosignature searches,” said Columbia University astronomer Karen Perez and colleagues. “We searched the radio frequency bands 1.1-1.9 GHz (L-band), 1.8-2.8 GHz (S-band), and 3.95-8 GHz (C-band) for narrowband Doppler-accelerated and wideband artificially-dispersed technosignatures,” they explained. “We observed Kepler-160 with the Green Bank Telescope for three 5-minute pointings at each frequency band, beginning on June 14, 2020 11:13 UT.” What do residents of Asgardia get? A group of astronomers is partnering with the Very Large Array (VLA), an observatory with 28 massive radio telescopes, to search the sky for traces of extraterrestrial life. During the last American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) conference, astronomers from an institute in California laid out a project that will increase efforts to explore possible life outside Earth. The SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute will work with the VLA observatory in New Mexico to do comprehensive surveys of the sky. The observatory will gather data and transfer it to a supercomputer, which will analyze it for signs of life outside Earth. According to Andrew Siemion, the director of the Berkeley SETI Research Center, partnering with a sophisticated facility such as the VLA can significantly help their study. The project will supplement current efforts in finding extraterrestrial civilizations, such as the Breakthrough Listen Initiative. This $100-million program, which is also led by Siemion, uses a wide range of high-tech equipment. While the study has yielded little success so far, Siemion believes that the endeavor should still be pursued. He said that humans are naturally inclined to make connections and explore the unknown. However, some people do not agree that humans should try to connect with extraterrestrial life. In 2010, renowned late physicist Stephen Hawking said that interacting with aliens might be dangerous because they might pose risks to life and resources on Earth.

Astrophiz 57: Dr Elaina Hyde ~ Data Science & Astrophysics Our feature interview is with Dr Elaina Hyde. Dr. Hyde speaks four languages, has four undergraduate degrees in astronomy, physics, optical engineering and planetary sciences; two masters degrees in engineering and astronomy and astrophysics; and a Ph.D. in astronomy and physics. She is an artist, a cool coder, and shares her code on Github. She uses data creatively to understand how our universe works. Follow on @AstroHyde on Twitter For observers and astrophotographers Dr Ian Musgrave gives us ‘What’s Up Doc’ and he tells us what to look for in our morning and evening skies, what planets, galaxies and nebula to look for and what occultations are happening. In Ian’s Tangent, we look at CO2 on Mars and Comet PanSTARRS In the news: The Breakthrough Listen Initiative has signed up for 1500 hours of observation time in 2018 with the multi-beam receivers on ‘the Dish’, CSIRO’s famous Parkes telescope and the recent tech upgrade with the multi-beam receivers will see scientists processing about 130 gigabits per second of observational data from deep space. Meekat Update: The 64-dish South African radio telescope, MeerKAT, which is a precursor to the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is complete, having achieved ‘first light’ some time ago and already generating exciting observational data. NASA’s Mars Insight mission was launched last Saturday from Vandenburg Airforce Base because the launch queue at Cape Canaveral was too long. Insight arrives at Mars on 26 November later this year after several Rich Purnall manoeuvres. And finally the Australian Government has allocated $40 odd million dollars for a Space Agency. The policy has not been released yet. It’s a piddling amount, but it’s a start. We will dissect this policy when it arrives and look at the local implications for both industry and education. Next episode: We speak with Jessie Christiansen, a NASA scientist working with the KEPLER and TESS Exoplanet missions
