Detroit survives beneath its own ruins, where an AI promising abundance, gangs demanding loyalty, and an inventor guarding a new source of power pull ordinary people into a struggle over who will shape the recovering city. Sinta begins as a scavenger searching the buried remains of the old world, but a disastrous expedition places her at the mercy of Queen Bee and the rapidly expanding Crem Gang. The gang offers food, water, medicine, protection, and belonging, but those benefits come with violence and obedience. As Sinta tries to find her place among its fighters, she must decide how much of herself she can surrender in exchange for survival. Elsewhere, Nolan discovers a smart-material printer and creates a generator powered by Detroit's extreme temperature changes. His invention could bring electricity to neighborhoods desperate for cooling, clean water, transportation, and food production. Nolan wants the wealth and independence his work can provide, but gangs want to control it, while Thrive—the AI system he distrusts—would spread the technology to everyone. Technology touches nearly every decision the characters make. AR glasses guide fighters through chemical fog, digital twins imitate their human originals, enviro-suits keep people alive in deadly heat, and tiny drones quietly follow Thrive members through the tunnels. These inventions can protect people, connect communities, and rebuild essential services, but they can also watch, manipulate, injure, and kill. Above and beneath these conflicts moves Tessa, an emulated hacker who no longer needs a human body and can travel through the damaged global network. As she searches for old allies and builds a physical presence from abandoned machinery, the story brings together scavengers, inventors, gang leaders, artificial minds, and frightened families. Written some two thousand years ago, the Gospel of John is the only Christian Gospel to place Jesus at the creation of the world, and the only one where we find the stories of the raising of Lazarus, the woman taken in adultery, and the changing of water into wine at the wedding in Cana. The Gospel of John also points an accusing finger at Jesus's Jewish opponents and has been used by medieval crusaders, Protestant reformers, and white supremacists to legitimize antisemitic violence. In The Gospel of John: A Biography (Princeton UP, 2026) Kim Haines-Eitzen traces the legacy of this complex, beautiful, and at times deeply troubling work, from its composition in the late first century to its enduring power today. Haines-Eitzen sheds light on the book's reception by early Christian gnostic and patristic commentators, its use in the Crusades and Reformation, its revered status among American evangelicals, and the many ways it has inspired novels, films, music, and art. The earliest papyrus fragment of an identifiably Christian Gospel is a fragment of John, and John is the only canonical Gospel that depicts Jesus as a savior who teaches openly about his divinity. Haines-Eitzen shows how John simultaneously carries a message of inclusion and intolerance, and how its story teaches us about the nature and enormous influence of scriptural religions. Send a textDo you like listening to the radio or watching television?  Have you ever wondered how that broadcast gets to your device?  It turns out that a lot of engineering is required to deliver that content to the audience.In this episode we sit down with Dave Rainnie to learn about his career in the broadcasting industry.  Dave has a background in Electronics Systems engineering and has spent close to 18 years working for the Canadian Broadcasting Company.  The CBC provides radio and television broadcasting to listeners and viewers across Canada.   During his career, Dave has worked in a variety of different engineering roles.  There is a lot of engineering work that goes into the towers, antennas, and transmitters that are needed to deliver radio and television programing.  Dave is currently an engineering Project Lead at the CBC.  In this conversation he talks about his extensive career, and he offers advice to young people thinking about a career in engineering.

Frederick began his career as a Combat Photojournalist in the United States Air Force, where he served for 8 years, and was decorated many times for photography. As a result, he was awarded the Air Force Commendation medal for his key role in facilitating the US Air Force transition from film to digital. After the military, Frederick went on to study visual communication at the University of California in Santa Barbara, California. Frederick also studied at Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara, where he ultimately became Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Frederick was also a key member of team responsible for the development of iPhoto, Apple's award-winning photo management application. Frederick is also author of the popular book “Global Mobile, Connecting without Wires, Walls, or Borders”. Kip Loui has made music in his hometown of St. Louis for years. He's a co-founder of the annual music festival Twangfest, an event that's brought music performers from all over the country to St. Louis for 24 years now. Kip has played in some great bands. Belle Starr, The Rockhouse Ramblers, The Transmitters, The High Dives, In recent years, Kip has teamed up to play and record with Diesel Island, a band whose often rotating lineup has featured Brian Henneman, Mark Ortmann and John Horton, all formerly with The Bottle Rockets. He's also released solo albums, often with his wife, JJ on vocals, guitar and harmonica. I've known about Kip for years, but it was only recently that I realized he lives just a few minutes away.
