The CNN documentary "I'm Chevy Chase and You're Not" presents him unfiltered, and we had a lot to say about it. Dave, Cody, & Minister DJ Dangerfield dig into the generational disconnects that fuel our culture wars, what happens when brilliance exists without accountability, and why fame doesn't break people...it amplifies what's already broken. We talk Community, SNL's 50th anniversary snub, the trauma-to-comedy pipeline, wounded healers in the church, and why DJ is now "good with Chevy." This one goes places.

In this What's Up, Doc? episode, Dave, Cody, and DJ Dangerfield dig into Netflix's Evil Influencer: The Jodi Hildebrandt Story...a disturbing look at how therapy-speak, religious power structures, and influencer culture can combine into something downright predatory. The conversation quickly moves past “true crime details” and into the bigger questions: why we're drawn to charismatic leaders, how “truth” gets rebranded, and why our culture is addicted to certainty even when reality is messy and complex. Along the way, they wrestle with what it means to protect the meek, build real accountability, and learn how to discern falsehoods, misrepresentation, and actual truth in a world that keeps rewarding confidence over wisdom.Bonus: an update on the Ashley Tisdale “Toxic Mom Group” saga and what celebrity internet beef reveals about how social media makes everything worse.https://linktr.ee/PopCulturePastorPod

Special movies reviews today! It's #56 and it's all Streisand movies.Barbra Streisand made 9 movies in the 70,s and we have already reviewed 3, (The Way we were 1973-For Pete's sake 1974-and A Star is Born 1976) So now you get our reviews of the remaining 6.1 (On a Clear Day 1970) Here rad director Vincent Minnelli (yes Liza's dad) gives us a weird musical about a woman with esp who can also make plants grow. Bob Newhart and Jack Nicholson are here along with a French guy and the racist ass cop from West Side Story. Babs sings her way into space at the end of this, and I'm extremely here for it.2 (The Owl and the Pussycat 1970) This one has a director that I really like Herbert Ross (Footloose, Goodbye Girl, the Turning Point, the Sunshine Boys, the Last of Shelia, and T.R. Baskin) giving us a zany movie that I love less than all those others. this movie is still good but for me Babs could be more of a Xanadu Muse, than an insensitive crack addict. 3 (What's Up Doc 1972) I might be getting this confused with the last film, and Maybe the “Muse” comment more applies here, I'm not sure cause it's been a minute. Also both of these films are a bit similar and Zany, I like this one better though and we might have Madeline Kahn and San Francisco to thank for that. people loved this when it came out and it pairs Babs with Ryan O'Neal which just may come up again soooooon.4 (Up the Sandbox 1972) Here Babs plays a rad woman and mother who says some of the coolest shit I've ever heard. Film ain't perfect but this was a treat for us. Watch this and then The Empire Strikes back, 2 great films from the same director.5 (Funny Lady 1975) Herbert Ross directing again in this messy sequel (ish) to 1968's Funny girl. Not the worst film but I guess it's not what people ordered at the time. I like That Cornelius from the planet of the apes is here, and that Roddy got to play an “out” character standing next to Babs.6 (Main Event 1979) This pairs Babs with Ryan O'Neil again. this one was a place in my heart cause I saw it as kid in the theater, so I'll always enjoy watching it. It's fun and light, it's got an issue or two and hey, why listen to us tell ya all about it. thank you film chums for listening.

In this episode, we take a look at something new for Feedback Matters — a patient feedback survey from a large medical practice. At first glance, the request feels solid: it's respectful, professional, and checks many of the right boxes. The email sets expectations clearly and frames the purpose as learning “what we do well and what we can do better.” But as we walk through the actual survey, things start to break down. The process is long, redundant, and oddly impersonal — from the clunky date-of-birth validation to a request for the respondent's name at the end. The wording throughout feels clinical rather than patient-friendly, and the survey's 5-point scale (ranging from “very poor” to “very good”) is surprisingly unbalanced. And then there's the kicker: the “likelihood to recommend” question — a version of the Net Promoter Score — shoehorned into the middle of a medical visit survey, using labels that don't even fit the question. It's an eye-opening example of how even well-intentioned feedback efforts can fall short when execution doesn't match purpose — and when the survey experience itself starts to undermine the credibility of the data being collected. Want to know what we think about your feedback loop? Book a free discovery call to find out!

Wait, Ryan O'Neal again?! Yup! What's Up, Doc is our 3rd O'Neal movie this year. And they all came out in the '70s, which was not just the man's peak. That was director Peter Bogdanovich's most-productive time in Hollywood too. They and the Bugs Bunny-ish Barbra Streisand (who's, of course, still a massive star over 50 years later) came up with a screwball comedy that pays homage to the old masters like Capra, Hawks and Keaton. There are funny misunderstandings, hijinks, 4 people somehow have the exact same bag. And for such a cartoonish movie, the stunts are some of the best ever, especially in the big car chase. The espionage stuff might not work, yet this remains a lot of fun. So dial up episode #666 (insert demonic voice) of Have You Ever Seen on this Victoria Day as we dig into What's Up, Doc. Well, Actually: this film was 3rd at the '72 domestic box office and The Poseidon Adventure was 2nd. Also, Looney Tunes' Casablanca parody, "Carrotblanca", was released in the mid-'90s, not the mid-'40s. Peruse the products offered by Sparkplug Coffee. They give our fans a onetime 20% discount. I thought I might share a few random bits and bobs from my little life for you to ponder today, starting with various interviews. Here I am on the mighty James Delingpole's podcast, talking about most subjects, though squabbling about conspiracy theories. Then there is this interview with Jasmine Birtles for the Money Magpie podcast, talking mostly about gold and property. (Audio on Spotify; video on YouTube). Also this radio interview with ABC Australia, I was quite pleased with. Here it is.And, if bitcoin is your thing, here I am on the Discovering Bitcoin podcast.Right. That's all the interviews done.A Thief in our MidstTurning to matters closer to home, there is a beautiful cat, pictured below, which belongs to a Chinese lady, who lives three doors up. She visits my garden every morning (the cat not the Chinese lady) as I am getting my 15 minutes of sun, purrs seductively, gets stroked, and then wanders off on its day to do who knows what. If I leave the back door open, she will come into my house and visit me at my desk, stretch out luxuriantly and, if I pick her up, start padding my chest pleasantly. I thought we had become friends.Well, you can't trust anyone.I now discover this feline fiend has been sneaking into my son's room to steal his socks, which it then brings back to its owner three doors up. Here it is. Caught red handed.A Rare Trip to the TheatreOn Wednesday I went to see The Comedy About Spies in the West End. It's not something I would have normally gone to watch, but my friend Tom Woods had some tickets he couldn't use and so off I went with my next door neighbour. I thought it was terrific. Thank you Tom!I'm obsessed with farce. Always have been since I first watched Fawlty Towers as a little boy. (I actually did my university thesis on Fawlty Towers). It's my favourite form of theatre by a country mile. I love the precision of it, along with the heightened emotion and panic. Done well there is no better narrative form, in my opinion. Films like Midnight Run and TV series like Curb Your Enthusiasm, in my view, embrace farcical plot schemes. But if you want a farce in its purest form on film, watch What's Up Doc. Just the best. The premise of The Comedy About Spies is a little bit forced, but the jokes are fab, there are hundreds of them, one after the other, they are brilliantly executed and with incredible precision - it's wonderful to see a show this tight. By the end I even found myself moved by the characters. I LOLed many times. What can I say? It's really good. What's your favourite farce? Let me know in the comments. The South Africanisation of EverythingIn other, less positive news, on Tuesday evening I found myself walking down the Kilburn High Road for the first time in about 25 years. It was always a bit rough around the edges - up there with Elephant & Castle and Streatham High Road as one of London's most worst thoroughfares - but my God it was eye-opening as to where the UK is going / has gone.Litter everywhere, people off their faces, drugs being dealt openly on the street, beggars, a woman knocked over by a bloke cycling a Lime bike on the pavement, the bloke unapologetic, little trust between visible between people in this multi-cultural mayhem. Talk about lack of cohesion. (I drove through Harlesden the other night and that was bad too).It confirmed my theory of the South Africanisation of everything. (Actually it's my friend Alex's theory, but I have purloined it). It prompted me to dig up this piece from a couple of years back, which at one point was the most read piece on this ‘ere Substack. On re-reading it now, I'm rather proud of it. Recommended. The Secret History of GoldIn personal news, I am glad/relieved to say I submitted the final proofs for my new book on gold which comes out in August - the Secret History of Gold (I haven't actually announced it yet, which I will in due course). Writing a book is an enormous undertaking. Publicising it is an even greater one. I'm glad stage one is complete. How about this for a fact?In 1930 the price of gold was £4.25 per ounce, as it was in 1716 when Isaac Newton set the price over 200 years earlier. FOUR POUNDS 25p. Today it's £2,475 per ounce. From £4.25 to £2,475. That's how much we've been robbed by currency depreciation. How have they (successive governments) been able to get away with this?Because representative democracy does not work is why.Thank goodness for gold. Thank goodness for bitcoin. Speaking of which:As always, if you are looking to buy gold, the bullion dealer I use and recommend is the Pure Gold Company. Pricing is competitive, quality of service is high. They deliver to the UK, the US, Canada and Europe or you can store your gold with them. Find out more here. The Mid-Year ReviewWearing my satirical comedy hat, I have a big gig coming up on May 20 in East London. These nights are usually pretty memorable - and for the right reasons. If you are free, come along. You can get tickets here. It would be great to see you. Finally, in case you missed this week's commentary, here it is:Have a lovely bank holiday weekend.Fun fact: Mayday - not as in the bank holiday, but as in the distress call for a ship or a plane is actually from the French, “M'aidez” - help me. May Day is an ancient festival to celebrate the beginning of summer (or as is the case in the UK this year, the end of summer), though socialists hijacked it with International Workers' Day. So now we are all crying “M'aidez” on May Day.Tell your friends about this entertaining catch up. This is a public episode. In this episode of Pop Culture Pastor, Dave, Cody, and guest, DJ Dangerfield, take a sobering look at American Murder: Gabby Petito, the Netflix docuseries examining the tragic disappearance and death of 22-year-old Gabby Petito. Together, they explore the deeper layers of a story that captivated the nation—discussing the dangers of hidden abuse, the role of social media in shaping false realities, and the difficult questions surrounding law enforcement, mental health, and family dynamics. This episode doesn't review the film as much as it wrestles with the complex human issues behind it: control disguised as love, the silence of victims, and the societal failure to protect the vulnerable. The team also examines the impact of trauma, the responsibilities of parents, and how grief—when turned outward—can become a force for healing and advocacy. If you've watched the docuseries or followed the case, this thoughtful, compassionate conversation will help you process it through a broader lens—one that values justice, empathy, and the sacredness of human life.https://linktr.ee/PopCulturePastorPod

Today on another encore edition of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Susannah Mars, daughter of actor and comedian Kenneth Mars. Of course you know Kenneth Mars from his many film roles including Young Frankenstein, What's Up Doc, The Producers, Radio Days & The Parallex View and many more classic films. What you may not know and we learn from talking to Susannah was that her grandfather was a comic and radio personality named Sonny Mars who released one very tidy LP & that later in life, her father became known for voice over work in tons of animated movies and shows, none bigger than that as King Trident in Disney's The Little Mermaid.  Susannah also lets us in on what it was like growing up with her cerebral but wacky father. We hear about his lunches with fellow actors and comedians like The Partridge Family's Dave Madden which then somehow led us to reach out to another guest, Denise Gaultier after hearing about her father's somewhat ribald drawings he made for Susannah at those lunches. We also hear about Susannah's singing career, her documentary film, Mourning Has Broken & how she starred in an ABC after school special with Kristy McNichol & so much more. There is so much love and respect and genuine familial memories about growing up with a father it's hard not to empathize with her years after his passing. He made funny voices, she got to watch her dad on stage in St. louis at the Muny Theater and how the cult comedy show Fernwood 2 Night still connects with her & her dads fans. Please take a listen to the latest episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast and enjoy our chat with Susannah Mars. Everyone has a story.
