NASA sent two astronauts up in June 2024 expecting they'd be back in just over a week. But the Starliner spacecraft they used had some unexpected issues—think leaky systems and moody thrusters—so it couldn't safely bring them home. Instead of taking chances, NASA decided to leave the ship up there and bring it back empty. So the astronauts had to hang out on the ISS way longer than planned—like, months longer. They finally hitched a ride back with SpaceX in March 2025. Not the plan, but hey, they made history and got a whole lot of space miles!

Captured by Earth's gravitational field on September 29, this 10-metre wide Space rock will remain in orbit until November 25, making it one of only five known mini moons. Discovered by the Atlas asteroid terrestrial impact last alert system, 2024 PTS belongs to the Arjuna asteroid group and is too small to be seen with the naked eye but can be observed through a telescope.*Mars' Missing Atmosphere Could Be in Its CrustA new study suggests Mars' missing atmosphere could be hiding in plain sight within the planet's crust. The research, published in the journal Science Advances, posits that ancient water on Mars may have reacted with the planet's ultramafic igneous rocks to form smectite clays, trapping carbon dioxide and converting it into methane. This mission exemplifies ongoing international cooperation in space exploration.- SpaceX Crew-9 Mission: NASA and SpaceX are gearing up for an exciting milestone in their ongoing partnership. The Crew-9 mission to the International Space Station is set to launch this Thursday from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. Featuring booster B085 on its second flight, the Falcon 9 rocket will carry the Crew Dragon spacecraft named Freedom. NASA's Tyler Nick Haig and Roscosmos cosmonaut Alexander Gorbunov will be the only two astronauts on board. Weather permitting, liftoff is targeted for 02:05 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday.- Perseverance Rover's Martian Discovery: NASA's Perseverance rover has made an intriguing discovery on Mars, spotting a rock nicknamed Freya Castle with striking black and white stripes. This rock's texture is completely different from anything previously observed in Jezero Crater, suggesting it may have rolled down from a higher location. This discovery could provide new information about Mars' geological history and processes.- MAVEN's Decade of Exploration: NASA's MAVEN spacecraft has reached an incredible milestone, celebrating a decade of exploration in Mars' upper atmosphere. MAVEN has revealed how solar storms increase atmospheric erosion, transforming Mars from a potentially habitable world to the cold, arid planet we see today. The spacecraft has also identified a new type of aurora on Mars and provided invaluable insights into Mars' climate history.- Earth's Journey Through Interstellar Clouds: Researchers have calculated that Earth and our entire solar system may have passed through two dense interstellar clouds approximately two and seven million years ago. These cosmic encounters could have compressed our heliosphere, exposing Earth more directly to the interstellar medium and potentially altering our planet's climate. Kononenko, además, rompió el récord del mayor tiempo acumulado en el espacio con 1.111 días a lo largo de cinco misiones. To allow for continued American presence aboard the ISS, Axiom gave up a seat aboard Soyuz MS-18 in April 2021, allowing NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hei to fly. Overall, the launch was a smooth countdown with no constraints from the vehicle or weather standpoints. SpaceX and NASA monitored weather along the eastern seaboard in case of an in-flight abort. The crew of four donned their spacesuits inside the Neil Armstrong Operations and Checkout Building ahead of the launch. Endeavour docked to the zenith docking port on the ISS' Harmony module and will remain docked to the station for the duration of the mission. This allows it to be used as an “emergency lifeboat” should something go wrong while at the ISS.

NASA's SpaceX Crew-6 mission is the sixth crew rotation mission with SpaceX to the space station, and the seventh flight of Dragon with humans aboard. The mission is targeted to launch no earlier than 1:45 a.m. EST Monday, Feb. 27, on SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft – named Endeavour – atop the company's Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy. Mission operations teams will be closely monitoring the weather leading up to liftoff. After docking, the Crew-6 crewmates will be welcomed inside the station by the seven-member crew of Expedition 68. Following a handover on the space station with Crew-6, NASA's SpaceX Crew-5 crew members will undock from the space station. The NASA SpaceX trip comes at the same time Russia prepares to launch a passengerless Soyuz MS-23 crew ship at 7:24 p.m. EST Thursday from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on a two-day trek to the space station. Besides delivering provisions for the crew, the Soyuz MS-23 spacecraft will return NASA astronaut Frank Rubio and cosmonauts Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitri Petelin back to Earth later this year. The market lost ground on Monday, as selling was sparked by losses on Wall Street at the end of last week amid rising concerns over a possible recession due to the current rate hike cycle by the U-S Federal Reserve. Large cap stocks in the electronics, old economy, petrochemical and steel sectors were the targets of the sell-off, but the biotech sector bucked the downward trend, as investors sitting on ample (充足) funds rushed to park their money there during the trading day. **MAC Investigating Possible Illegal TikTok Activities in Taiwan ** The Mainland Affairs Council says it is investigating possible illegal activities by TikTok in Taiwan. According to the council, it launched the investigation after Cabinet spokesman Luo Bing-cheng told delegates at an interministerial meeting in Taipei that the Chinese social media application posed (構成) a cybersecurity threat to Taiwan. The council says it has also submitted information TikTok's activities that could be im violation of the Criminal Code to prosecutors for further investigation. Finance Minister Su Jien-rong says his office will issue a report on its investigation within three months, but to his knowledge TikTok has no business or taxation registration in Taiwan. **Taiwan Lantern Festival to Showcase Giant Rabbit ** The Taipei City Department of Information and Tourism has unveiled some of the highlights of February's Taiwan Lantern Festival. It will the first time in 23-years that Taipei will have hosted the event. According to city tourism officials, the themed of the event will be "Light up the Future." A total of 16 installations will be set up in Taipei's central, east and Xinyi districts. One of the main attractions (景點) will be a large rabbit lantern located on roof of one of the exits of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall Station. The 2023 Taiwan Lantern Festival will be taking place in Taipei from February 5 through 19. **Nigeria 20 Die of Suspected Cholera Outbreak ** At least twenty people have lost their lives to suspected cholera outbreak in Abi Local Government Area of Cross River State, Southern Nigeria. Ten villages in the local Government Area have reportedly been affected since Thursday. Ajeck Mangut reports from Abuja. **Russia: Space Capsule Leak Doesn't Require Evacuation ** Russia's space corporation Roscosmos says a coolant (冷卻液) leak from a Russian space capsule attached to the International Space Station doesn't require evacuation of the crew. But the space agency is keeping open the possibility of launching a replacement capsule, if needed. Roscosmos said Monday that a panel of experts will determine later this month whether the Soyuz MS-22 capsule can be safely used by the crew for a planned return to Earth or if it should be discarded and replaced. Roscosmos says the next Soyuz is scheduled for a March launch but could be expedited, if necessary. Hurricane Ian has left a path of destruction in southwest Florida, trapping people in flooded homes and knocking out power to 2.5 million people. Con él van: un empresario y piloto, un inversor israelí y otro canadiense. Se espera que pasen 8 días en la EEI realizando investigaciones científicas y proyectos de divulgación, no es “turismo de placer” ¿o sí? Su expedición se llama Axiom-1. Axiom Space es una empresa privada (como SpaceX) fundada en 2016 y es lo suficientemente “pop” como para anunciar que en su próxima misión, la Axiom-2 irá una en la tripulación una persona que elegirán en un reality show. Axiom tiene un acuerdo con la NASA para incorporar módulos propios a la EEI pensando en que tengan un módulo totalmente privado en la EEI, que deberá funcionar hasta 2030. NASA cobra a Axiom por el alojamiento y los recursos diarios en la EEI, pero a la vez compra el servicio de envío de muestras científicas hacia La Tierra cuando la tripulación regrese. Moscú puso un plazo para esperar a que esas agencias espaciales retiraran las sanciones financieras contra las empresas aeroespaciales rusas. Sacó a sus funcionarios del puerto espacial de Kourou, la estación de lanzamientos en la Guayana Francesa, y suspendió el programa de cohetes Soyuz desde allí.Pero el 30 de marzo de 2022 el astronauta de la NASA Mark Vande Hei regresó a La Tierra desde la EEI en una nave rusa, la Soyuz MS-19. Rusia anunció los planes de construir una nueva estación orbital: ROSS, después de renunciar a la EEI. Más terminales vienen en camino”. 2 - La suspensión de colaboración entre ESA y Roskosmos Rusia planea efectuar unos 20 lanzamientos de los cohetes Soyuz en 2022. Roskosmos suspende la cooperación con Europa en lanzamientos desde el cosmódromo de Kourou. A Russian film crew returned to Earth today after shooting the first-ever movie in space.The filmmakers spent 12 days filming Challenge at the International Space Station after rocketing up on October 5.Yulia Peresild and Klim Shipenko landed as scheduled on Kazakhstan's steppe at 0436 GMT, according to footage broadcast live by the Russian space agency.They were ferried back to terra firma by cosmonaut Oleg Novitsky, who had been on the space station for the past six months.“The descent vehicle of the crewed spacecraft Soyuz MS-18 is standing upright and is secure. The crew are feeling good!” Russian space agency Roscosmos tweeted.The filmmakers had blasted off from the Russia-leased Baikonur Cosmodrome in ex-Soviet Kazakhstan earlier this month, travelling to the ISS with veteran cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov to film scenes for “The Challenge”.If the project stays on track, the Russian crew will beat a Hollywood project announced last year by “Mission Impossible” star Tom Cruise together with NASA and Elon Musk's SpaceX.The movie's plot, which has been mostly kept under wraps along with its budget, centres around a surgeon who is dispatched to the ISS to save a cosmonaut.Shkaplerov, 49, along with the two Russian cosmonauts who were already aboard the ISS are said to have cameo roles in the film.The mission was not without small hitches.As the film crew docked at the ISS earlier this month, Shkaplerov had to switch to manual control.And when Russian flight controllers on Friday conducted a test on the Soyuz MS-18 spacecraft the ship's thruster fired unexpectedly and destabilised the ISS for 30 minutes, a NASA spokesman told the Russian news agency TASS.But the spokesman confirmed their departure would go ahead as scheduled.21st-century space raceTheir landing, which was documented by a film crew, will also feature in the movie, Konstantin Ernst, the head of the Kremlin-friendly Channel One TV network and a co-producer of “The Challenge”, told AFP.The Soviets launched the first satellite Sputnik, and sent into orbit the first animal, a dog named Laika, the first man, Yuri Gagarin and the first woman, Valentina Tereshkova.

Soyuz MS-19 crewed mission to the International Space Station is scheduled for October 5. The three-person crew will include director Klim Shipenko, actor Yulia Peresild and cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov, hoping to be the first feature film to shoot scenes in space. Construction of the launch pads at Equatorial Launch Australia's Arnhem Space Centre has begun with formwork and concrete pours completed recently. Meanwhile, a NASA contingent has arrived at the Arnhem Space Centre in preparation for a historic sounding rocket launch campaign from the site next year. SpaceOz Pty Ltd has announced the development of the Space Centre Australia launch facility at Weipa, in far north Queensland, with initial construction expected in Q1 of 2022. Soyuz MS-18 es un vuelo espacial Soyuz realizado el 9 de abril de 2021 que transportó a tres miembros de la Expedición 64/65 a la Estación Espacial Internacional. En un principio la tripulación estaba formada por tres cosmonautas rusos, ya que los vuelos estadounidenses en la Crew Dragon comenzaron en 2020 y terminaron con el acuerdo entre Rusia y EE. UU. para la compra de asientos en las Soyuz a partir de 2020. El supuestamente último asiento en una Soyuz comprado por la NASA fue el de la astronauta Kathleen Rubins en la Soyuz MS-17. Más tarde, en marzo de 2020 se confirmaría que Roscosmos y la NASA habían llegado a un acuerdo para incluir a un astronauta estadounidense. Este acuerdo no contempla un intercambio de fondos entre las agencias y será pagado en especie en forma de transporte de tripulaciones a la estación.

This isn't just significant for future Mars exploration. We go into the potential historical impact of a mini helicopter flying on another world. Then it's onto the nominee for NASA's next administrator, former Senator Bill Nelson (D) Florida. Former administrator Jim Bridenstine thinks it's a good pick, but what does the panel think? He performed four spacewalks, the total duration of work in open space was 28 hours 13 minutes. Prior to joining the cosmonaut corps, he served as a pilot and commander of the aviation link of the Guards Aviation Training Regiment of the A.K.Serov Krasnodar Military Aviation Institute. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel (2009). Hero of the Russian Federation, pilot-cosmonaut of the Russian Federation (2016). Honorary Citizen of the city of Oryol, Russia. Alexander Misurkin is the president of the Badminton Federation of the Oryol region, which was created on his initiative in 2017. As part of supporting the development of the federation and badminton as a lifestyle that he promotes, Alexander Misurkin organized the first team game in space in the history of mankind. On 01/01/2018, a friendly badminton match took place onboard the ISS, in which members of the crew of the 54th expedition took part. While the discovery is far too small to provide any real proof of an imbalance between the way matter and antimatter act, it might provide the first tantalizing clues of some new physics beyond the Standard Model -- to explain why the universe appears to be made up mostly of matter -- rather than antimatter. *Detecting new types of gravitational waves A team of astrophysicists have proposed that permanent scars left in the fabric of SpaceTime by gravitational waves could be used to study exotic hypothetical cosmic events such as primordial black holes and one-dimensional defects in space known as cosmic strings. The study identifies a new concept which the authors are calling orphan memory. *Cassini finds Saturn’s moon might have been tipped over Saturn’s ice moon Enceladus may have been knocked onto its side in an ancient collision early in its history. The new findings are based on observations by NASA’s Cassini spacecraft which found evidence that the moon’s spin axis -- the line through the north and south poles -- has reoriented, possibly due to a collision with a smaller body, such as an asteroid. *New discovered planet hotter than most stars Astronomers have found a Jupiter sized exoplanet hotter than the surface of most stars. A report in the journal Nature indicates that the planet KELT-9b has a day side surface temperature of 4,600 Kelvin – only 1200 degrees cooler than the surface of the Sun. *Expedition 51 return to Earth The two man Expedition 51 crew from the International Space Station have returned safely to Earth aboard their Soyuz MS-03 capsule. The findings are based on the discovery of two supermassive black holes in the ultra-compact dwarf remnants of a pair of shredded galaxies. *Astronomers get closer to solving the mystery of pulsars Astronomers are a step closer to uncovering the mystery of how rapidly spinning neutron stars called pulsars generate their powerful energy beams. The findings indicate the beams are far more complex than previously through. *First results from the Breakthrough Listen Initiative looking for intelligent life beyond Earth. The Breakthrough Listen Initiative which is searching the skies for signs of extraterrestrial intelligence has found 11 events which they regard as being significant and worth further investigation. The findings were part of the petabytes of data collected during the first year of observations using the National Science Foundation’s Green Bank Radio Telescope in West Virginia. *Soyuz takes new crew on fast rendezvous flight to International Space Station Two new crew members have just arrived aboard the International Space Station. The expedition 51/52 crew blasted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in the central Asian republic of Kazakhstan aboard their Soyuz MS-04 capsule on a six hour fast rendezvous flight to the orbiting outpost. On 6 July, the spacecraft Soyuz MS-01 is scheduled to blast-off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, headed for the International Space Station (ISS). On board, will be Dr Kate Rubins, who, along with Anatoli Ivanishin and Takuya Onishi, will be part of the 48th expedition to the ISS, due to return in November this year. Before training with NASA, Kate worked as a microbiologist, most recently at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, where she worked on emerging viruses such as the Ebola and Lassa viruses. For this month's podcast, we caught up with Kate as she prepared for her mission, and chatted about the experiments she'll be undertaking in space, what it's like to train to be an astronaut, and whether a pipette works in microgravity...
