For the headline of this week’s episode of the B&H Photography Podcast, we lifted a line from our guest’s own Instagram bio. It would have been too easy to title a show with Walter Iooss, Jr. “Sports Photography Legend” or some such, but that pigeonholes Iooss too easily, and does not recognize the scope of his engagement with photography and with the creative process. Yes, Walter Iooss, Jr. is sports photography. He has over 300 Sports Illustrated covers to his name, his first professional gig was at age 17, and for six decades he has photographed several Hall of Fames’s worth of athletes, including names like Arnold, Mary Lou, Muhammad, and Tiger, and his work with Michael Jordan is unparalleled. Also—every Super Bowl. But he has also photographed rock stars, models, fashion and commercial assignments, portraits, and documentary series. And he tells us of his love for music and that if not for a twist of fate, he might have been a musician. The man is a creator for life, a photographer for life. With Iooss, our conversation takes a leisurely approach, touching on a few of his more memorable photos and some of the interesting lesser knowns; the breadth of his work alone could keep us talking for hours. Along the way, we learn a little about his upbringing, the love for music, his mentors, and the time he shot for Atlantic Records. We discuss how he builds a composition, whether it be an action shot during a game or a complicated portrait setup. We also talk about using a giant Polaroid camera, the coming of auto-focus, and Canon DSLRs. Join us for this pleasant conversation that is sure to interest not only fans of sports, but fans of photography. Guest: Walter Iooss, Jr. Photograph © Walter Iooss, Jr.

On today’s episode of the B&H Photography Podcast, we speak with the winners of our two 2018 sweepstakes. During the first part of our show, we meet the winners of our Fujifilm X-H1 Sweepstakes, get to know a little about their photography, and hear their early opinions of the Fujifilm X-H1 and Fujifilm X-E3 cameras. After a short break, we will catch up with the winners of our Canon 5D Mark IV Sweepstakes, which took place in January, 2018. We join New York resident Nalane Singh, who won the Fujifilm X-E3 and Fujifilm XF 23mm f/2 lens, to speak about her early impressions of the camera and her plans to use it to advance her street photography. We also speak with the grand-prize winner, Californian  Brian Duckart, who received the Fujifilm X-H1 mirrorless camera with the FUJINON XF 35mm f/2 lens. He, too, lets us know the work he expects to do with his new camera and how it has been performing since he’s had it. In the second half of our show, we catch up with the photographers who won cameras in our Canon 5D Mark IV sweepstakes. Both Hillary Dunning and Tim Couch address the creative boost they have felt since receiving their new Canon DSLRs. Hillary Dunning, who won the Canon EOS 80D DSLR camera with a 50mm f/1.8 lens, is a nature photographer who has been invited to exhibit her work in regional shows over the course of the past nine months, and is exploring other genres, as well. She discusses the advantages of a fast lens, how the new camera has enabled experimentation, and why it’s the perfect camera for hiking. Tim Couch is a working photographer and the Canon 5D Mark IV is a professional tool that he has incorporated into his workflow. We speak with Couch about the camera’s advantages when shooting live music events and boxing, his two main endeavors. We learn that he is now starting a photo-based webzine, and we discuss which lenses he is looking to buy now that he is using such a high-resolution camera. We could not be happier to share our love of photography and are so pleased to know that the sweepstakes have helped some of our listeners improve their work or simply sparked their creativity. We look forward to staying in touch with all our winners and following their output in the years to come—and be sure to keep an eye out for our next sweepstakes. SoulPup Episode 4 - How to Take Perfect Pet Pics I'm awful at taking pictures of Louie. Fortunately, Atlanta pet photographer Leesia Teh offered tips to take stellar portraits. Your dog may just become the next Instagram star! Look to the light. If you catch your pet doing something cute, try to capture the action near an open window. That’s the most flattering light, and you reduce the chance for blurry photos, particularly with black dogs. Black dogs require additional lighting magic. Teh suggests taking black dogs outside, preferably in open shade, so that you can capture their eyes as well as the detail in their coat. Get on the dog's level. Don’t be afraid to lie down on the floor or kneel next to your dog, then position the camera really low. Be patient. Look for opportunities to engage and make eye contact. A lot of times, dogs don’t like the camera up in their face -- even if it’s a phone. If you just lower it a little bit and make eye contact with them, it can really help. Once you regain that connection, slowly raise the camera again. Keep toys handy. Treats or squeaky toys will help keep dogs engaged. Use what works! You can get a decent photo with a camera phone. Although a Canon DSLRs is her primary tool of choice, Teh says that you can get great portraits with camera phones, especially outdoors. Need inspiration? Cinematic Masterclass with Philip BloomToday on the show we have a legend in the filmmaking blogosphere, award-winning cinematographer Philip Bloom. Philip is a world-renowned filmmaker who, for the past 10 years of his 27-year career has specialized in creating incredible cinematic images no matter what the camera. He started blogging back in the early 2000's before anyone was really doing it. I personally have been following him for years. Here's some more info on Philip Bloom:Some of his most iconic work was created with Canon DSLRs. As one of the biggest evangelists for their use in productions his website became the place to go to for budding filmmakers as well as experienced ones keen to embrace the new technology. His site now regularly has over 1,000,000 visitors a month. His use of Canon DSLRs to shoot part of Lucasfilms’ last movie “Red Tails” proved a huge point to the naysayers. This technology was proved very viable in large-scale productions. He has become very well known for his in-depth video reviews of various cameras, which have helped many people in the huge decision of buying a camera. He has worked for all the major UK broadcasters, such as the BBC, ITV, C4 and Sky, as well as countless independent production companies and many others around the world including CNN, CBS, Discovery, FOX and NBC. Independent projects are key to Philip and he splits his time between bigger projects and small independent ones. One of his most successful independent projects was “How To Start A Revolution” which won a BAFTA in 2012 and was also awarded prizes at several film festivals including Best Documentary at the 2011 Raindance festival. Enjoy my conversation with Philip Bloom.

On August 25th, the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV - was officially announced amidst a cacophony of both praise and disappointment - depending on whether you are primarily a stills photographer or videographer. Ben Bruton-Cox of the Our Week In Video podcast helps me work through my own angst over Canon. Is the Mark IV right for me?   “Expectation postponed makes the heart sick, but a desire realized is a tree of life” –ancient proverb.   After 8 years of unrequited love and anticipation, Canon has slammed the door closed on the convergence market that they gave birth to. When the 5D Mark II was released, it had the most basic of video features. But, O!, it was the loveliest HD video ever seen (only 30fps in the beginning, moire, poor dynamic range, and rolling shutter notwithstanding) from a camera costing less than $3,500. With that camera, Canon accidentally created the “convergence” market, and with it, hope and expectation that  Canon would continually improve the video features of the EOS 5D line.   Sadly, I feel that if Canon could go back in time, they would never approved video capability in any of their DSLRs. However, the genie is out of the bottle. The convergence market’s expectation was that their desires for pro video features would be built into 5D Mark IV. They thought “surely after 8 years we will have the ultimate convergence camera!”   Alas, that expectation - at least by those who consider themselves convergence photographers and filmmakers - was unrealized. They are the ones most disappointed in the EOS 5D Mark IV because Canon has the capability to deliver and meet the needs and wants of convergence creators, but have deliberately hobbled these features. What makes this sting even more is the marketing language Canon used to announce the 5D Mark IV gushes with phrases such as:   “see legendary"   “builds on the powerful legacy of the 5D series"   “amazing refinements"   “creative videographers will appreciate the brilliance and power that the EOS 5D Mark IV delivers"   You certainly have to have a creative imagination to believe that.   Frankly, the EOS 5D Mark IV feels like an intentional hobbling of features that – I believed if were reversed – would see Canon crush it over and beyond what they are doing now with the sale of mid range DSLRs.   The EOS 5D Mark IV is no doubt a superb still camera with competent - though mostly outdated - HD video baked in.  It’s a camera I want to like. I personally haven’t bought into other convergence cameras by Sony and Panasonic yet.   I love Canon. I love Canon gear. I love the Canon image. I love the Canon ergonomics. I love Canon lenses.   I get it that my love for Canon is unrequited and they probably don't want me – a convergence creative – as a customer. It hurts a bit in part because I and so many other convergence bloggers, podcasters, and YouTubers have resulted in the sales of tens of thousands of Canon DSLRs to convergence creatives - all to Canon’s benefit - and all without any compensation to us whatsoever.   Some folks make the claim that we should all just trust Canon’s marketing department, that they are smart, and know what they are doing. This is a dubious claim. Many large companies have marketing departments that have been clueless about their customers - resulting in massive failure for those companies. The same can happen to Canon.   It’s a serious mistake for Canon to jilt the very market they created – albeit accidentally.    Mentioned in the episode:   CrumplePop's website http://crumplepop.com   CrumplePop AudioDenoise http://www.crumplepop.com/fcpx-premiere-plugin-audio-denoise/   CrumplePop EchoRemover http://www.crumplepop.com/fcpx-premiere-audio-plugin-echoremover/   Soundstripe.com http://soundstripe.com   Ben Bruton-Cox and Our Week In Video podcast https://www.facebook.com/ourweekinvideo/   Canon EOS 5D Mark IV https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/products/details/cameras/dslr/eos-5d-mark-iv   Official Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Introduction https://youtu.be/8Z9089048wk   Introducing the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV https://youtu.be/BtD-xEvG21E   Jared Polin “Fro Knows Photos” Canon EOS 5D Mark IV DSLR Preview https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0ou39qKoWM   Planet 5D article by Mitch Anger - RANT: “The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Doesn’t Have…” http://blog.planet5d.com/2016/08/rant-the-canon-eos-5d-mark-iv-doesnt-have/

It would be informative, overwhelming, and boring for the most part. Take a listen to this 20 minute episode on Sensor Sizes from FX and EF to DX and EF-S. Nikon and Canon DSLRs are the main subjects of my talk but at the very least you will be acquainted with the difference between larger and/or smaller sensors. Larger Sensor Smaller Sensor Higher Resolution Lower Resolution Better Low Light Performance Poorer Low Light Performance Better Dynamic Range Poorer Dynamic Range Shallower Depth of Field Longer Depth of Field Less Diffraction More Diffraction Reduction in Crop Factor Increased Crop Factor   Diffraction: When you use a small aperture, light reaching the edges of the image sensor can only get there after passing through the small aperture and then spreading out. That spreading of light causes the light rays to hit adjacent photo sites. Essentially, this spreading causes the light to sometimes hit the wrong photo site and leads to blur. 35mm film: It is the width of the film including the sprocket holes. Happy Shooting! They live in the heart of the Shire, they're the team behind TOWIG (The Only Way Is Garioch), but filmmakers Alstair Stewart and Andrew Forbes are saving hard to buy the gear that will take their projects to the next level. That's in today's IADF podcast. If you have a great script then that's half the battle," says filmmaker Alistair Stewart, from Inverurie, who runs Reel Moon Productions with friend Andrew Forbes. The pair are working and saving to make money to buy equipment that will help them improve the production quality of their films. They've bought the Canon EOS 550D, one of the Canon DSLRs that are proving so popular among indie filmmakers around the world. That improves their video footage.Next on their shopping list is an audio recorder. Anyone who uses a DSLR knows that you have to record sound on a separate device to get the best audio results.Along with that there are the cables and boom pole to support the mic.And then there's the tripod."When you are doing a [tripod] pan you can hear a nice..creakkkkkkk!" laughs Alistair, making a mental note to add a tripod to their shopping list. However most pressing for the two filmmakers is to find someone with skills to operate and work behind the camera while Alistair's in front. They need volunteer(s) to help with all sorts of production work. You'll get a sandwich for your time (they reassured me!).They're jumping through hoops to make their productions work as best they can: TOWIG, Dream Girl and Tagged.Wouldn't it be great if a big-hearted local business offered a couple of hundred quid to pay for an audio recorder or a tripod to help Alistair and Andrew out.So, lads, start knocking on doors and see what help is out there.'If you don't ask, you don't get,' my ex-wife used to say to me.Find Reel Moon Productions here:FacebookYou Tube
