Is the tide turning against oil and gas in Colorado? Last week, Denver City Council turned down a $25 million contract with Suncor, the Commerce City oil refinery that has been the subject of scrutiny by neighborhood groups and climate activists for decades over pollution issues. But one industry leader dismissed the move as “political grandstanding.” So host Bree Davies is talking to Denver Post environmental reporter Noelle Phillips, who has been covering the Suncor debate for years to talk about why the pushback is coming now and what it's really going to mean for Denverites. In a shocking turn of events, Lumumba Sers Sr., a prominent anti-violence advocate in Denver, was arrested for allegedly shooting and killing a man at Pioneer Park in Commerce City. Sers, known for his work with the nonprofit "Heavy Hands Heavy Hearts," which aims to reduce violence, was taken into custody after allegedly shooting 27-year-old Malcolm Watson during a child's birthday party. The incident is suspected to be a revenge killing, as Sers' own son was shot dead a year earlier. This tragic event underscores the growing frustration with rising violence and the perceived failure of the justice system to hold perpetrators accountable. Despite his previous advocacy, Sers now faces first-degree murder charges, raising critical questions about the effectiveness of current anti-violence efforts and the desperation that can lead to vigilante justice.

Hello Colorado Rapids fans. This week on Holding The High Line, Welcome To Wrexham stole our meme! Rabbi and Red banter about the international break. The vibes around the USMNT are slightly better after that draw against Brazil. We talk expectations for them at Copa America, Cole Bassett not getting minutes against Japan, and Moïse Bombito getting a draw against Kylian Mbappé. Then we discuss the Rapids summer transfer window. Where are we at on the options to buy for Rafael Navarro and Lamine Diack? Who could we see leaving the club? What's the timeline for Bombito and Bassett, if there is one? What positions would we target? Then we discuss Saturday's home match against Austin FC and the Diego Rubio return to Commerce City. The boys break down how the season is going for the Verde and Black, what the former Pids are up to, and if this is a must win. Both teams will be looking to respond after two losses a few weeks ago. Commerce City, Colorado, is a working-class community with a higher-than-average crime rate. On March 17, 2013, Nate Leon embarked on a journey to Domino's Pizza around 10:45 a.m. Nate, a devoted father of three and a full-time employee at IBM, also worked weekends at Domino's to supplement his income. On that particular day, Domino's received a call requesting a pizza delivery to an unspecified intersection. The employee informed the caller that an exact address was needed for delivery, prompting the caller to hang up abruptly. Minutes later, the caller phoned back, asking for a pizza delivered to a truck stop in North Denver. Although such requests were not their standard practice, the manager made an exception after the caller explained he was stranded at the truck stop, awaiting a tow truck. Nate was assigned the delivery, but when he failed to return to work, his manager reported him missing. This was just the beginning of a crime spree that would shock the community but not just in Colorado. It's Friday, and we're digging into all the local stories that mattered this week. First, Suncor Energy is getting hit with a “historic” $10.5 million dollar fine for “spewing excessive amounts of toxic chemicals into the air over three years.” Are lawmakers finally ready to crack down hard on the 100-year-old chronic polluter? Plus, tickets went on sale yesterday for a new “SXSW-style” event called Outside Festival set to premiere in Civic Center Park this June, and those new black-and-white license plates are everywhere! Longtime environmental champion and former mayoral candidate Ean Thomas Tafoya joins host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi to talk about the news, and wrap up with our Rocky Mountain Highs and Lows of the week. Ean talked about the GreenLatinos' North Denver report. Paul looked up the Commerce City steakhouse with the colorful signage, and Bree was right. It is Deno's. He also mentioned the Delta pilot's lawsuit and Ed McCaffrey's excellent mustard. What do you think? Hi everybody and welcome to today's episode of Attendance Bias. I am your host, Brian Weinstein. I would guess that most of us have had the experience at a Phish show where the band is communicating to us, directly. Not communicating with the crowd; I mean, the members of the band are playing a show that speaks to our exact life experience. Whether or not you've ever made eye contact with Trey right before they leave the stage after the first set, there's no denying that the best kind of art is the kind that speaks to you; the kind that you can understand and appreciate through your own personal lens. Today's guest, Nate Schwerin, had a life-changing experience at the Phish show at Dick's on September 5, 2015. As you'll hear Nate describe, it was right out of a cheesy movie but happened to him in real life. It's no surprise that Nate's game-changing show happened at Dick's Sporting Goods Park; including 2023, Phish has played 38 shows at the venue. It's no surprise that some fans have had some of their most meaningful experiences there. But that's enough from me, it's Nate's story to tell. Let's join Nate to chat about Big Sky Montana, The Catcher in the Rye, and being 13 years old at your first show as we break down September 5, 2015 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, in Commerce City, CO.
Hello Colorado Rapids fans. This week, Holding The High Line opens the show with heavy hearts. We podcast just hours after news breaks that Rapids super fan Joan Dobrzynski passed away. We reminisce about her time as a fan of the club and what she meant to the players and Rapids Community. Then Rabbi and Red talk Rapids Media Day. We discuss whether Keegan Rosenberry has shown he should be the new captain. We introduce the concept of Something To Prove FC. Get as excited as the new guys as we talk Zack Steffen's knee, Djordje Mihailović humor, Chris Armas going off on the Open Cup, and more. We have reason to believe Sam Vines will immanently be announced as rejoining the Rapids. The boys discuss what went wrong at Royal Antwerp, what him and other players coming to the club having failed(?) in Europe mean, and whether Armas will bring the Vines back back to Commerce City. The guys then discuss the preseason schedule as the Rapids return to Querétaro and Orlando. They've replaced four pitches at DSGP. There's concerns about how much information we'll get while the team's out of town. Lastly, we take listener questions. We discuss contract info, No. 6 prospects (Kellyn Acosta anyone?), season expectations, and center forward depth. Also, we officially had a listener in Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba. During the show, we bring up Mark Goodman's and John Babiak's articles on Joan.
It's easier to catch the bad guys when they can't get away. 3 robbers left their getaway vehicle parked and running outside while robbing a check cashing business in Commerce City, CO. By the time they were done, it was gone. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It's Tuesday, and we're talking about all the local stories that matter this week. Four years after Elijah McClain was stopped by Aurora police, an Adams County jury last week delivered a verdict in the first of three trials over the 23-year-old's death. Host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi lay out the facts and talk about the questions still left unanswered. Plus, why is Commerce City so mad at Nuggets owner Stan Kroenke? Hint: It's not because the Nuggs and Avs are still not on TV. Also, we respond to listener comments and questions about Denver's hardcore scene, that 1-star review for the Brown Palace, and one of Denver's best carrot cakes. Do you know how we look at young kids running and marvel at how free and easy they seem to run because no adult has yet tried to correct their form, so to speak? As you may have heard in the two episodes I presented with the two 18-year olds who finished the Leadville Trail 100, that pair took their own unique and surprising paths to completing the race because there really isn't much of a template for young people like them. Along a similar vein, at the American Heroes Run last month, we had a fascinating scenario involving a 15-year old completing the marathon. Nathan Maze, from nearby Commerce City, Colorado by no stretch is your typical skinny kid whose parents pushed him to run from a young age. In fact, Nate was once a 5'4”, 180-pound middle schooler who never even contemplated running. Determined to change his body, Nate dropped 50 pounds, no small feat for a young guy. Then he got into the gym and became, well, jacked. Nate soared to over 6 feet in height, put on muscle, and now weighs a lean 170. Check out the transformation photos I posted on Instagram. Along the way, he told him mom, Amanda, that he wanted to run a marathon. He was serious, even though he'd never run much before, wasn't on his school's cross country or track teams, or anything like that. Without much guidance, Nate would do things like have Amanda to drop him off 17 miles from home so he could run the rest of the way. The American Heroes Run was super tough for Nate, and at many times I had doubts this young stud could finish, but despite looking defeated, he kept heading out for another lap and another lap until he finished. Beyond that incredible display of determination, there is a lot more than this to this remarkable young man, as you'll hear. Like his desire to help others transform their bodies like he did. And his goal to save $50,000 by the time he finishes high school. He even already has a financial advisor to help him get there. He's also influencing his dad, Bob, to lose weight. We're less than a month into Mike Johnston's first term as mayor, and things are already off to a bumpy start — some media outlets reported this week that the mayor would not enforce homeless encampment sweeps. Turns out that wasn't quite the case. Plus, Suncor continues to fail, RTD is actually winning, and Denver Parks and Rec gets a well-deserved pat on the back. Host Bree Davies is joined by producer and chief conspiracy theorist Paul Karolyi and regular fave Joshua Emerson, comedian and co-chair of the Denver American Indian Commission. And as always, newsletter editor Peyton Garcia shares her best bets for your weekend — think brewery birthdays, vegan mania, Aurora chef celebrations, and more! For more on the rollout of Mayor Johnston's homelessness plan, check out this helpful piece from our pal Kyle Harris at Denverite. Paul mentioned the Aloft Hotel's new vacancies, Cultivando's air monitoring program in Commerce City and a new local investment opportunity. Bree talked about that big green building on Kalamath, her love for the Northside's Ashland Rec Center, the Denverite piece on The Gathering Place-operated motel shelter shutting down, and her husband's UMS party this weekend. Josh talked about RTD's historic rate decrease and the prospects for this year's sweet corn harvest. For more on Suncor — the recent shutdown and its enormous economic impact — check out our episode from back in February with Denver Post reporter Noelle Phillips. It's Episode 239, and we travel to Commerce City, Colorado, to take on the Rapids in a place where we haven't won since 2018. Spoiler alert: We still haven't, but at least we didn't lose! A 0-0 draw for the Black and Gold starts this next gauntlet of 5 matches in 16 days. Also on this podcast, apparently it was Opposite Day, as Filly gets his research on when discussing 0-0 draws while Scarf rants on the NWSL haters. The boys welcome Bogusz while giving you a recap of how our four internationals did their duty. Oh, and a major announcement from Filly and the Scarf: THEY ARE STARTING ANOTHER PODCAST! That's right, the soon-to-be-recorded first episode of "2 Black and Gold", covering all things LAFC2, will be hitting the airwaves and YouTube shortly after their second match of the season. Get ready, and enjoy episode 239!
A series of mysterious incidents in late December forced the Suncor refinery in Commerce City to shut down for weeks. The refinery is reviled by environmental activists and neighbors for its history of polluting our air and water, but it's also responsible for about 40% of Colorado's supply of gasoline. So, what if the shutdown was permanent? What if Mother Earth snapped her fingers and it disappeared? Denver Post reporter Noelle Phillips has been covering Suncor for years, and she's on today with producer Paul Karolyi to explain the current situation and imagine what a Denver without Suncor would look like. Catch up on all Noelle's reporting on Suncor here: https://www.denverpost.com/author/noelle-phillips/ At the 9News mayoral debate last week, Ean Thomas Tafoya took aim at Chris Hansen over a recent TV ad. Check out our interview with Tafoya, and the rest of our Mayoral Madness coverage — and make sure to stay tuned for our interview with Chris Hansen this weekend. It's election season and there's some big ticket races going down in Colorado. But the one to watch? Congressional District 8. This newly drawn district stretching from Commerce City to Greeley is getting a lot of attention as Democrat Yadira Caraveo and Republican Barbara Kirkmeyer battle for the brand-new seat. But this race is also about representation: The district is home to many voters who identify as Latino and Hispanic, and the race is on to win their votes. But what matters to these voters? Host Bree Davies is joined by City Cast Denver state politics contributor Justine Sandoval to break down the nuances of this voting bloc — and why such an ethnically, culturally, and economically diverse population shouldn't be treated as a monolith. (Just a note of transparency: Justine is a political strategist who works for various Democratic campaigns, offices, and efforts. The views expressed on City Cast Denver are her own.) A new poll of Colorado Latino voters finds the economy and inflation, gun violence, and climate change are among the issues they find most pressing ahead of the November election. You can read more here. Bree mentioned this article from CPR: Latino voters could be decisive in Colorado's biggest races, and the campaigns know it Learn all about tarantula migration in La Junta from our weekday newsletter! After years of low test scores, concerns of gang activity, and accusations of discrimination against Spanish-speaking students, a new state-mandated “reorganization” order could seal the fate of the Adams 14 school district — schools may close and thousands of students could be forced to attend classes outside their community. Today on the show, host Bree Davies talks to Chalkbeat reporter Yesenia Robles about where the school district sits now, how it got to such a dire state, and where the people of Commerce City stand when it comes their much-maligned schools. Read Yesenia Robles' in-depth reporting on the Adams 14 situation in English and Spanish for Chalkbeat. Bree mentioned the latest on the impending Rainbow Gathering. Hear our interview from earlier this year with a veteran RG attendee addressing the controversy.
