The Legacy of Supergirl for me will always be friends. The friends that I would not have found if I hadn't entered the superhero world. I began as many did with Arrow. Having no comic knowledge. I sought out a podcast to help understand this new world. The adventures of Oliver Queen were always a little dark for this butterfly, but I kept watching. Not as much for the show itself but for the Arrow Squad and the people it was drawing into its ranks. Green Butterfly was technically born on the Central City Underground which celebrated The Flash. The brighter, more humorous tone suited my personality better, but I was still waiting for my hero. I had never heard of Supergirl. I had seen a few superhero movies when I was younger, but my memories were hazy. Almost everything I knew was coming from these new CW shows. Then I met the Scarlet Cougar and Miss Ice. They both helped me understand the multiverse that was beginning to unfold in front of me. I knew from the very first episode that Supergirl was going to be my favorite show. It was funny, light, and full of hope. I was immediately drawn to the characters and the bond I could already see forming between them. The podcast was super fun too. I often invented a role for Green Butterfly to play in that week's plot. I always wanted to make people smile so I let my silly side come out. I love that the characters on our show are not bonded by blood but by something stronger. A deep emotional connection and commitment to each other. They support each other through this life all while keeping the world safe. I also felt my friendships getting stronger as the show continued. Friendships that I feel may not have existed if Supergirl had not come into our living rooms. There were aspects of the story that mirrored my life in ways that made the show even more meaningful for me. One example is when Kara is exposed to kryptonite she is weakened and sometimes nearly paralyzed. I have Cerebral Palsy so when my muscles get sore and tired moving can seem like a monumental task. Supergirl always fights through and I do too. When they had Alex come out in season 2 I was moved by how much that story resonated with me. The words and emotions Alex was expressing echoed mine from a decade before. The stories entertained me every week. However, the people in the real world that I met because of the show will always mean the most. In the years that have passed I have learned so much about my Superfriends. I understood which story elements would excite them and which one's would drive them crazy. When Miss Ice said she had to step away I was really sad because I was worried Maid of Steel would not continue. Immediately I started praying for a hero and I was rewarded. I can't imagine my life now without Silver Vox. He swooped in when we needed him most. National City got a new voice to speak the truth about what was happening there and I got a treasured friend. I could never fill the Scarlet Cougar's shoes. Karen taught me so much about superheroes and really ignited my passion to know more. It was with her encouragement and the help of John, Geoff and Emilee that I found the bravery within myself to let my voice be heard on a weekly basis. I can't be Scarlet Cougar, but I will always honor her and be your eye in the sky. The Legacy of Supergirl for me will always be one of fun, friendship, and hope. Whatever our next adventure holds, I hope you all will join us. Because the most important thing to remember is tv shows will come and go but Superfriends are forever.
Elseworlds was this year's CW crossover. But this year we saw a new character introduced, Batwoman. Flash, Green Arrow and Supergirl make their way to Gotham City investigating John Deegan. Batwoman is not happy to have them in her city. Due to the epic nature of the crossover, the GSM shows did a mega podcast roundtable. Elseworlds: At the end of night one of the crossover, we found out that Dr. John Deegan was given the book by the Monitor and was in Gotham City. After detouring though Star City, Ollie-Flash, Barry-Arrow and Supergirl head over to Gotham. They run into some muggers and are taken into custody by the GCPD. They are sprung and taken to Wayne Tower. There they are greeted by Kate Kane. She has taken over the tower and offers to let them use it. They learn from her that Deegan is over Arkham and head over there for answers. Cisco, Kaitlin, and Diggle show up filling them in on the appearance of Earth 90's Flash and the message. Kara & Kaitlin distract the staff. Barry & Oliver confront Deegan, who frees the inmates and escapes. In a battle with an inmate Scarecrow's fear toxin is spilt and Arrow & Flash battle each other thinking they are battling Merlin & Thawne. Batwoman comes to save the day. In Arkham we had shout outs to Mister Freeze, Scarecrow, Penguin, Poison Ivy, Clayface, Riddler, Psycho-Pirate and the Luke Fox a.k.a. Batwing. Elseworlds - Batwoman Saves The Day: Elseworlds saw the formal introduction of Batwoman and the city of Gotham into the CW Flarrowverse. It seems that Bruce/Batman left Gotham 3 years ago and it fell to pieces. Wayne Enterprises fell and so did the city. They seem to be canonizing that this is the Nolan Batman's Gotham. But Bruce's cousin Kate Kane is on the job as Batwoman. It seems even she doesn't know where Batman went. But she is there to protect her city. All the drama that our heroes are bringing is making things worse. She just wants them out of the city. However she and Supergirl are World's Finest in her eyes. They both know each other's secret identities. Our heroes may have left Gotham, but we have not seen the last of Batwoman. Summary: Elseworlds was a fun crossover that checked so many boxes for the fans. Part 1 gave us Smallville shout outs and a battle with Amazo (seen in many of the animated series). Part 2 gave us the canonization of 90's Flash, a Green Lantern Diggle, and Batwoman. Part 3 was an alt-Superman vs Superman battle with Arrow making a bargain with the Monitor. We all felt part 3 was the weakest and Supergirl's show got hijacked. But the setup for next year's Crisis on Infinite Earths has us pumped. It was also a blast to do a crossover podcast with Arrow Squad, Central City Underground and Maid of Steel. With 7 podcasters and a ton of listener feedback it was a fun, but late night. We hope you enjoy the podcast! Cougar's Comic Corner: Karen and several of us talked about characters and plot points in Elseworlds that are teeing us off for Crisis. It is a good time to pick up this volume and get a sneak peak of what we may be in store for next fall. Crisis On Infinite Earths: 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition In a defining event in comics history, the heroes from different Earths band together as their worlds are erased one by one. And not all will survive. Buy the hardcopy from Amazon or the digital from Comixology. Greetings once again faithful listeners. This week on Central City Underground, we discuss a thought provoking episode aptly titled "Therefore I Am". We finally witness the origin story of The Thinker and the Mechanic, and get one step closer to fully understanding their motives. Meanwhile, Barry is quite conflicted. His instincts tell him that Devoe is the bad guy they have been hunting, but Team Flash feels that Barry might be overthinking the whole situation. As if that wasn't enough to ponder upon, we see the return of another speedster fresh from battling starfish from outer space! Wally's back from Blue Valley just in time for any crises that may arise. Join us for another fun-filled discussion as we all wonder, "Where the heck was Dibny?". The use of HyperDocs is on the rise in 1:1 classrooms across the country. as they allow for increased student engagement and student-directed work. Within this single document, students are provided with hyperlinks to all of the resources they need to complete a variety of tasks and engage themselves in the learning.HyperDocs vs A Doc with LinksHow to Build a HyperDoc Lesson – Parts of a HyperDocMany HyperDocs follow this basic template that takes students through six steps of a lesson:Engage: Hook your students, get them engaged, and activate prior knowledge. You might use a fun video, interactive website, or audio recording.Explore: Link resources, such as videos or articles, for students to explore more information.Explain: Clarify the learning objective for your students. WE’RE BACK BABY! Welcome back to Central City Underground! It’s been a long summer as we eagerly awaited to see what would become of the Scarlet Speedster after being sent into the Speedforce at the end of last season. There was some speculation and chatter on the Facebook page as we could only imagine what was in-store for us and Team Flash…Team Kid Flash…wait…Team Vibe(?) Well let’s just say that the team’s all here. That’s right, we get Barry back in the first episode. As if that wasn’t enough, Caitlin as a kick butt bartender! How could it get better than that? I’ll tell you how. Iris is the new team leader, Joe and Cecile are moving in together and Wally knows Japanese! Read More... The Golden Spiral Media stable of podcasts has busted out with a lot of time travel goodness, especially with this season of television. “The Flash” on the CW and the Central City Underground podcast, hosted by Tony and Joe have been dealing with time travel for a couple of years now. We have two new shows now based on time travel, the Remaking History podcast for the NBC show “Timeless,” hosted by Karen and Doug and the Radio Static podcast for the CW show “Frequency,” hosted by SILY's own Barb and her cohost Steve. I'm also loving “This Is Us” which isn't time travel based, but whose storytelling, much like LOST, depends on keeping up with many timelines at once. I guess what I'm trying to get at is that there is a lot of television, especially genre TV, which is Golden Spiral Media's wheelhouse, that is giving us as the audience a lot to dive in and think about what might happen when our timeline could go a little wonky. Have you ever had a moment or three in your life that you wish you could go back and have a “re-do?” Usually I'm thinking about this when I wish I could go back and come up with a pithier comeback to something someone has said to me. I'm not exactly fast on the fly that way. But lately, with all of the time travel goodness I'm watching I'm finding myself facing some much larger experiences that I would like to rethink.Read More... Sometimes, an event happens…two forces of unimaginable power collide, but they are not destroyed. Instead, they merge to become something even greater than their individual parts. Greater than an alternate dimension…greater than a chemical bath that can restore the dead to life. The madmen (and madwomen) from Arrow Squad and Central City Underground have joined forces to fight an unspeakable evil. Well, it's not that evil. Well, we're not actually fighting anything at all. Until we Flash again... I'm not going to go into depths on the season finale. Chances are, if you're reading this blog, you've seen the episode. And if you haven't, why spoil anything? I think most if not all of us are in agreement that the finale absolutely delivered. Since this will be my last blog til season two, I decided to look back at some favorite moments. Tony and I were asked to take over Central City Underground in the middle of the season. We were thrilled and honored to do so, and fortunately we were both already big fans of the show and hadn't missed an ep. Thank you for catching this transmission of Central City Underground! We apologize to The Rising Tide for hijacking over their hijack, but some things just can't be helped. We had a really good purpose for doing so, though! There was a new episode of The Flash on The CW this Tuesday, and Mr. The Shadow and Miss Ice (that's me) really needed to talk about it. From flashbacks to the night of the particle accelerator explosion to more subtle hints about Harrison Wells' origin, this episode was packed with superhero-origin goodness. (Raise your hand if you were thinking Smoke Monster when The Mist transformed. Eh?) Kyle Nimbus, a.k.a. The Mist, becomes the first of potentially MANY villains to be locked away in the particle accelerator at S.T.A.R. Labs. Hmm. How do we feel about this? Read more... Freshly back from the island, Miss Ice rejoins The Shadow in their underground lair with a new transmission! In this episode of Central City Underground, Miss Ice tells us about her adventures on Oahu and the 2014 fan-organized Lost event, then we jump into some DC Comic universe news (Gotham), but the main purpose of this transmission is to discuss the first two issues of [[[Flash: Season Zero]]]. This comic series is written by Andrew Kreisberg, who has had his hands on every single episode of Arrow and is heavily involved in The Flash, and now with this comic we look at what possible relationship it has to the upcoming TV series, if any at all. Since Miss Ice was released from jail, she's been a bit skittish. The Flash joins The Shadow and Miss Ice in the latest transmission of Central City Underground and they have a rockin' good time! As a long time listener of Arrow Squad and a very active member of the Arrow community, it was our pleasure to talk with The Flash about where his interest in the comic book character began, how it evolved, and what draws him in most about the guy. Who needs an hour long of commercial free jazz when Central City Underground needs to transmit? We're back with another transmission! In this special edition of Central City Underground we spend a lot of time talking about how a lot of casting news is revealing a broader arc of DC characters and what that possibly means for the show itself. There are six weeks left before the premiere and we already know a good chunk of the heroes and villains set to be introduced! We also hear from two other Underground agents lying low in the area. XForce11 and False Tympanic send in their own transmissions and it is awesome to hear that they each are staying strong in the midst of so much uncertainty.
