“No capes!”Edna ModeIt's hard to believe that in this age where superhero movies have conquered (and some might say ruined) moviegoing in ways that never seemed possible even 20 years ago, but Disney and Pixar's The Incredibles was truly a revolutionary superhero movie. An animated film utilizing all original characters that lovingly plays with all of the tropes of the superhero genre in suitably comedic ways without ever drifting into parody? Unthinkable at the time and still feels pretty fresh today! But one of the best things The Incredibles (and its underrated sequel, The Incredibles 2) did, almost for the first time ever on the big screen, was explore the logic of superhero costumes. Even though it's a family-friendly animated movie, in The Incredibles, super suits are more than just decorative, they're functional, and thanks to the hilarious and unforgettable Edna Mode, we learned just why some of the favorite design elements of many beloved superhero costumes are strictly forbidden in this world. So on this episode of Does it Fly? we are taking a look at the very concept of the super suit. Not just the why of them in terms of the story, but the how in terms of design and functionality. And as we often do find, we're a lot closer to certain elements in the real world right now than you might think…SUGGESTED VIEWING We based the majority of today's research on this episode on two legitimate animation masterpieces, Brad Bird's The Incredibles and The Incredibles 2. The broader logic of superhero suits has been explored in countless other places, but it's particularly well done in early episodes of The Flash (both the recent CW TV series starring Grant Gustin and the earlier 1990 version starring John Wesley Shipp). We'd like to think that everything discussed in today's episode is applicable across superhero media, though, so feel free to use our findings in your own headcanon as and where appropriate!FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! Building the Perfect Super SuitHakeem specifically calls out brand names such as Kapton and Kevlar as being potential “super suit materials” that already exist in the real world. You might recognize Kapton as the material used to make “space blankets” but its unique thermal and conductive properties also make it a key piece used in circuitry where significant heat can be generated by processing power. Kevlar is best known as the material used to make lightweight bulletproof vests and other types of modern body armor. Copper has also shown considerable promise as an antimicrobial that can be incorporated into other materials.Whether or not you have elastic powers, you might want to incorporate technology known as Shape Memory Materials which are currently being perfected by NASA. Many of the materials named here fall under the category of “metamaterials” which will likely become more commonplace in the years to come.Oh yeah, and maybe one day some of these can make you invisible, too. And those “biomimetic sharkskin suits” that Hakeem references? The jury is still out on them. Why The Incredibles is HistoricTamara brings up the fact that The Incredibles was the first Pixar movie about human characters because of the difficulty in getting the subtleties of humans, such as hair, to look convincing on screen. Read more about it here. The Geneva ConventionsHakeem makes the point that superhero suits could also be seen as a way to identify “combatants” similar to the protections offered to soldiers under the Geneva Conventions.WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?This isn't the first time we've tackled superheroes on Does it Fly? so you might want to check out our episodes on Batman, The Boys, and Iron Man to get a better sense of the real world concerns that superheroes (and villains) might face.FOLLOW US!Stay in the loop! Happy Tuesday! Today, I'm so excited to be talking to one of my favorite nemeses, The Flash himself, Grant Gustin. I'm just joking, I love Grant. We did play foes on TV but we're good friends in real life. And how could we not be? He was Sebastian on Glee! Grant just finished his run of Water For Elephants on Broadway in September and he and his wife welcomed their second child shortly after our conversation. Naturally, we talk a lot about being a parent, working in theater, being on a long-running TV show, and the changes of perspective he's gone through in his career. Grant is super sweet and even showed me his purse. Stick around after our convo for the Hindsight, where my producer Jeph and I break down the interview, and he tries to get me to spill secrets about The Mandalorian. Enjoy! Actor Al Miro's latest starring role as Hunter Fosterini alongside Lucy Hale (Nicole), Grant Gustin (Max) and Jane Seymour (Diane Matthews) is in the feature film Puppy Love. Produced by Buzzfeed Studios/Lionsgate and directed by Nick Fabiano and Richard Alan Reid, Puppy Love is streaming in the US as an Amazon Freevee Original Movie and coming to Canada and the UK in February as an Amazon Prime Original Movie. After a disastrous first date, Nicole and Max vow to lose each other's numbers until their dogs find a love match. Hilariously mismatched Nicole and Max are forced to become responsible co-parenting a dog, but end up finding love themselves. Al plays Hunter Fosterini who is a rich CEO of a tech company.  Hunter hires Nicole (Lucy Hale) to stage his mansion. He and Nicole become romantically involved and he becomes the “other guy” to Grant Gustin's character Max. Hunter is the opposite of Max.  He is wild, über confident, unpredictable, passionate, absurd, foreign, and mysterious. His absurdity adds comedy to the film and his relationship with Nicole adds threat to Max. Al is also proud of his role as Dmitri in Firefly Lane who was married to Katherine Heigl's mother, Mario in the CW hit tv series Riverdale, Hugh in Dangerous (Lionsgate) and Max in the Film Festival favorite Daddy's Boy.  Want to watch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod (Please Subscribe)

It may not be a stellar entry for the DCEU.  But somehow it encapsulate the ups and downs and the best and worst of the not so long-standing franchise.  If nothing else, the Flash movie exists.  This is a movie that has been long expected and gone through multiple ideas and revisions as the future looked bright-ish for this latest cinematic universe and now it looks dead in the water. The hype going into it was unbelievable, fans and the entirety of the DCEU was counting on this movie with a troubled production history and everything else going on to either save the franchise and be the next step forward or to end thing arguably in the cleanest most concise way ever and wrap up a decade of plot threads.  Needless to say, that was a lot, maybe too much on this movie. But as a super hero movie fan, I had to tackle this movie.  It has been far too many months since I last graced the podcast airwaves, so here we are to bring about the end of the DCEU (until Aquaman 2 that is) and talk about how this last entry wrapped things up and how it stands as a solo and final outing for the Flash.Make sure to stop by all your favorite socials to find us at either @nicknackmovies or @nicknack_IC on Twitter, Instagram, Tik Tok, and Letterboxd.  Share all your thoughts on The Flash now that we have all had months to process it and maybe see it for the first time on Max.

It's the movie that's said to be the "greatest movie of all time"...the movie that "changes lives". It was the movie the world has waited years for. So, the Legendary Ladies wanted to know - was The Flash Movie really all that? Amy, Kat, and Morgan all saw the movie on opening weekend, then sat down to discuss their thoughts. They mulled over how nostalgia could change the interpretation of the film, how Grant Gustin's portrayal of The Flash on TV could affect the perception of Ezra Miller's Flash, and whether the oversaturation of superhero movies has caused so much fatigue that, even if a movie would otherwise be great, the bar is so high that it's impossible to meet. It's the end of an era as The Flash on CW comes to an end. It's been a wild ride with some really high highs and some really low lows. And that really sums up this final season as well. The final four episodes though did at least close the loop on themes from the entire show run so that's definitely some credit there. Are there things we wish that were done better? Absolutely? Did it feel like this season was filled with unnecessary tie-ins for other CW shows (And not the one we wanted *cough* Legends of Tomorrow *cough*)? Yup. But the show at least ends on the themes of family and Barry's growth with Iris which makes this at least a successful ending. It also makes us wonder what would have happened if not for all the interference from outside. Unfortunately we will never know. Instead we're left with hoping that the Flash movie turns out good and that the director realizes that Grant Gustin will always be the superior Barry Allen over Ezra Miller. While this is the end for The Flash and our Arrowverse coverage, it's not the end yet for Super Tuesday Recap. Before we shut this show down we're going back to the beginning and are going to do a rewatch/review of Agents of SHIELD from the beginning. We'll be taking June off then will return in July to cover the first half of Season 1. So stay tuned.  Kriss and Dpalm record the Mailbag at the end of every month. Meanwhile, Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) takes a liking to Barry, which doesn't go unnoticed by Oliver. Sin (guest star Bex Taylor-Klaus) asks Roy (Colton Haynes) for help when a friend of hers goes missing. Roy is surprised when Thea (Willa Holland) not only encourages him to help, but joins the search. Unfortunately, Sin's friend is connected to Brother Blood (guest star Kevin Alejandro), and their search ultimately gets one of them seriously injured. Michael Schultz directed the episode with story by Greg Berlanti & Andrew Kresiberg and teleplay by Andrew Kreisberg & Geoff Johns (#208). Determined to cure him, Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) makes a risky decision. The cure causes Oliver to hallucinate, and what he sees forces him to confront his past. Meanwhile, Barry (guest star Grant Gustin) continues to help Felicity, and their connection grows stronger. The Arrow asks Lance (Paul Blackthorne) to look into Gold, but when the stakeout on Gold goes bad, someone is killed.
