All life continues to hang in the balance as towers fail and mankind's saviors fall. With the manipulative Psycho Pirate now working for the Anti-Monitor in a bid to eradicate all existence, the Oblique Obliterated Objectors join forces with superheroes from every multiverse to stop the mindless shadow demons while bringing their reviews of Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part Two!
WARNING: Do not listen to this episode unless you have seen the 2024 WBD/DC Universe release "Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part 2" or do not mind hearing key plot points. Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part 1 is the newest WBD/DC Universe release and the first of a trilogy that concludes the “Tomorrowverse” cluster of films. That continuity began in 2020 with Superman: Man of Tomorrow. Crisis is based on the 1985-1986 epic crossover from DC Comics. It is not to be confused with the Crisis crossover in the “Arrowverse” that aired on the CW. All three films were written by Jim Krieg, who joined the show. He's agreed to review all three parts here on the podcast. In this episode, Krieg talks about the need for proper backstories for Supergirl, Psycho Pirate, and the Monitor. He also discussed how Part 2 is a bridge between 1 and 3, and how tied into each other the films are.

This episode, we focus on one of Gatman's most gafflingly grazen gad guys, the Ventriloquist (and Scarface!) Who's really pulling the strings? Listen now to find out! Intro Reminder of PuchiCon appearance Background (3:00) Important to note that in this version, the dummy was made from wood used in Blackgate's old gallows, and there are conflicting reports whether the dummy is possessed or not Ventriloquist (Arnold Wesker) created by John Wagner, Alan Grant, and Norm Breyfogle in Detective Comics #583 (Feb. 1988) Arnold Wesker is a meek man from a mafia family – originally developed DID after witnessing his mother's murder His origin was later retconned – imprisoned in Blackgate prison, he begins hearing voices from a dummy named Woody, and the voices convince him to murder his cellmate – during the fight, Woody is damaged, and takes on the name Scarface In either version, Scarface becomes the controlling force, and Wesker is his “puppet” - to the point that Scarface becomes enraged if people insist on speaking to Wesker and not him One telltale sign is that Wesker/Scarface is unable to pronounce the letter B, replacing it with G - Batman becomes Gatman, bullets become gullets, etc. At one point Wesker was committed to Arkham Asylum, and upon escaping used a sock puppet named Socko - when Scarface learned he had been replaced, he and Socko had a gunfight, resulting in damage to Wesker's hands #BecauseComics After an earthquake nearly destroys Gotham, a new villain called the Quakemaster shows up demanding a ransom to prevent further earthquakes - Tim Drake is able to deduce it's Scarface because Quakemaster refuses to pronounce words with the letter B Has an on-again/off-again partnership with the Penguin, where they often break each other out of prison and work together on criminal enterprises Murdered by Tally Man in an effort to frame Harvey Dent Later resurrected during Blackest Night as a member of the Black Lantern Corps, and creates a construct of Scarface with his ring New 52 - he was never killed, and was hospitalized for treatment of his DID Briefly controlled by the Venom serum, but was taken down by Nightwing and Damian Wayne Succeeded as Ventriloquist by a woman named Shauna Belzer, who had her own puppet Ferdie He helped Batman defeat Psycho-Pirate, because his DID was able to override Pirate's emotion control powers since Scarface was really in charge Issues - the pawn who would be king (7:03) Dissociation, Depersonalization, and Derealization Subordination (14:03) Masochism (21:04) Break (26:01) Plugs for Popcorn Psychology, Ocho Duro Parlay Hour, and Phillip Kennedy Johnson Treatment (26:56) In-universe - introduce ways to take Scarface out of commission Out of universe - work on scaling down and away from coping mechanism (30:10) Skit (34:06) DOC: Hello Mr. Wesker, I'm Dr. Issues. SCARFACE: Nope, you're talking to ME, doc. Leave the dummy outta this. WESKER: W-w-well at least l-l-let me say h-h-hello f-first. SCARFACE: Shut yer yap and lemme do the talking. The less you talk, the faster we can greak outta here and get gack to gusiness. DOC: I love Vaudeville as much as anybody, but SCARFACE: *interrupting* that explains your practice DOC: Hey! This is a serious establishment. Are you going to talk to me or not? WESKER: I-I-I SCARFACE: Aye Aye Aye is right! Sheesh! You gonna take the hint, shrinkydink? This mug is useless without me. I'm the grains of this operation. That's how I keep making gread. DOC: *flustered* Fine. Tell me, what can I do for you? SCARFACE: Can you crack safes? DOC: No SCARFACE: Can you crack heads? DOC: NO! SCARFACE: Knockaround guy? Gagman? DOC: No and No SCARFACE: Is your office a good place to do laundry, if ya catch my drift? DOC: I'm not doing anything illegal for you! SCARFACE: Then you're a waste of space like this guy over here! DOC: He is the reason you can talk at all! SCARFACE: waaaaatch your mouth, you're on thin ice, capiche? DOC: Mr. Wesker, are you going to stand for this? SCARFACE: He doesn't have to, that's why he's sittin down. And you're gonna be layin down for a dirt nap if you don't keep your eyes on me! DOC: You don't have any weapons. That tommy gun is a toy. I'm not stupid. SCARFACE: My noggin is like taking a Louisville slugger to the jaw if you're unprepared. DOC: If you're so bright, have you figured out a way to resolve your anger without resorting to violence? SCARFACE: Resort? You darn right I resort. A hideout full of moola and the screams of my enemies make crime a vacation. DOC: Is that what Wesker wants? SCARFACE: Who cares what he wants? DOC: I do. And if this is you, Arnold, then I'm willing to work with you in this…unique arrangement. SCARFACE: I'm confused. Are you talking to me or to him? DOC: Yes. SCARFACE: *pause* Ooooh, you're a slick one, aintcha? Gut there's no one else you need to talk to. DOC: Thank goodness. So, I'll make sure I only direct my questions to you, and you'll answer, and I'll make sure it's documented in your chart, under your name. Just spell it for me so I get it right. SCARFACE: S-C-A DOC: A-R-N SCARFACE: *screaming* THIS AIN'T A JOKE! DOC: I'm not laughing. I'm talking to you. I'm looking at you. I know you run the show, and I'm giving you the attention you deserve. If the other part is not important according to you, fine. But I won't let your reality get in the way of mine. SCARFACE: YOU SICKO! Don't toy with my emotions. DOC: Don't use your emotions as toys WESKER: Please stop fighting DOC: who said that? SCARFACE: NOBODY! DUMMY, SHUT UP! WESKER: yes sir DOC: You seem to have an issue with a part of you that is intimidated. What do you plan to do to strengthen it? SCARFACE: I'm not weak; that loser DOC:*interrupting* You're a loser; got it. SCARFACE: I'm not here to be insulted! WESKER: You usually leave that to me DOC: Progress! Now if you could only get him to stop shoving his hand inside you to compensate, you wouldn't be so uptight SCARFACE: *pause* wait…are you actually trying to treat me here? DOC: It wasn't my first idea but if it's the only way I can ultimately give you some peace and have fewer people hurt, I'll make it work. SCARFACE: *exaggerated wistful sigh* Maybe I can finally get a world without Dummy. A mafioso can dream. DOC: Um…erm…something like that. Anyway, I noticed that I didn't get my usual fee before the session, so I'm going to have to bill you for the balance. SCARFACE: *deadpan* Oh…Dummy takes care of that WESKER: I DO NOT DOC: WHAT? SCARFACE: I MEANT THE CHECK'S IN THE MAIL. Now get me outta here before he makes me talk about my mother. *fake sob* I really miss her. DOC: Pining? SCARFACE: No, oak. Every year on American Independence Day, I post a picture of The Force of July on social media, both as cheeky humor, but also to make a small comment about 1980s comics and authoritarianism. This year, instead of that, I decided to do an episode devoted to the short-lived DC Comics villains (Yes, if you couldn't tell, they are the bad guys). We start by discussing their first appearance in Batman and the Outsiders Annual 1, by Mike W. Barr, Jim Aparo and others. We explain the original creation of the Outsiders and their patriotic-themed foes. If you've never read this issue before, get ready, because it's a doozy, straight out of 1984, the novel and Reagan's America. Then, we talk about the return appearances facing the Outsiders and later the Soviet Super Team, the Peoples' Heroes. Then, it's onto the Outisders/Infinity Inc crossover, not only featuring the Force of July, but also (spoiler alert) The Psycho-Pirate (hooray). We end discussing The Force of July appearing in the John Ostrander version of the Suicide Squad comic in 1989, and that can't be good news for Major Victory, Mayflower, Lady Liberty, Silent Majority and Sparkler. (Yes, those are their names.) I love C-list super villains and these guys are so of their time, that they are an intersting to examine from a historical and socio-political context. All of the issues discussed in the pod are available on DC Comics Unlimited App, if you want to read them for yourself. Note: Had some coughing issues while recording. So, if some made it through the edit or it seems more choppy than usual, that's why. Apologies

Actor Bob Frazer's filmography is packed with ne'er-do-wells, evil puppet masters, and smarmy bastards. Bob was Roger Hayden, also known as the Psycho Pirate, in Supergirl and Arrow – a supervillain who could control the emotions of everyone around him. He was the Sourcerer, a criminal mastermind hacker, in the thoroughly entertaining (albeit divisive) ReBoot: The Guardian Code. He was a slimy luxury car dealer lording over a hapless dad portrayed by Eric McCormack in Drinkwater, the indie hit that wowed audiences at the 2021 Whistler Film Festival. And he's Alban Hearst, a key figure in the anti-witch terrorist organization the Camarilla, in Freeform's brilliant Motherland: Fort Salem, which is currently filming its third and final season. In 2018, Bob won the UBCP/ACTRA Award for Best Actor for his work in The Cannon. Bob played Colton, AKA The Cannon, an ailing adult-film star struggling to prevent the collision between his personal and professional lives. Bob is also a regular on stages around town – including for titular roles in Shakespeare plays at Bard on the Beach – and he's been nominated for more than a dozen Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards. In this engrossing conversation, Bob discusses the joys, challenges, and allure of giving life to dastardly characters. Episode sponsor: Fish Flight Entertainment

Jace and Rocky from Comic Boom! chat about the DC books for the week of June 22, 2021. In the pages of Justice League #63 Naomi officially joins the the league while in the back up Justice League Dark story, we meet a new potential female member of that team. Detective Comics #1038 has a big brawl between Batman & Roland Worth with what we expect is the Magistrate pulling the strings, while the back-up shows that the Penguin may want to return to some former glory. Checkmate #1 brings back all the familiar players from the previous Leviathan events, but can Mark Shaw truly maintain control of all the intelligence assets of the DC Universe? Wonder Woman Black & Gold #1 has some truly astounding art with some great stories that provide wonderful insight into who Diana is. We get more Wonder Woman in #774 as Diana finds the gods of Olympus have been killed, but she is not about to let them remain in the Graveyard of the Gods without trying to rescue them. Harley Quinn #4 shows Harley bouncing back from the events of #3 and choosing to bring the fight to Hugo Strange and rescue her new sidekick Kevin. Mister Miracle #2 continues this excellent series as Shilo Norman's identity may be compromised and the fallout from that may be tremendous. How will he deal with this possible disaster while being attacked by N'ver Free, who claims to be the true child of Scott & Barda? Teen Titans Academy #4 is a Bat Pack investigation into the identity of Red X, but are the kids on the right track? Superman #32 finishes up the series as Superman and Jon are able to rescue the Thakkramites from the Shadowbreed. On the heels of that rescue it's clear the Kal-El is very proud of his son. Robin #3 shows us the first interaction between Damian and Connor Hawke, but it is the surprise guest appearance at the end of the issue that may be even more important. Action Comics #1032 reveals that the suspected Kryptonians imprisoned on War World may be a group that fled Krypton thousands of years before the planet exploded. One thing is for sure, whether these prisoners are Kryptonian or not, Superman will not let them remain enslaved. Batman Superman #19 gives us some really fun version of Superman Batman and Robin in different time periods. Each of the era's is illustrated by a different artist and it really helps to bring the comic to life. This comic is so much fun, we hate that it is ended with #22. Batman Reptilian has amazing art that brings to life this great version of Batman who has a little more of an edge than readers of the conventional version of the Caped Crusader may be used to. Infinite Frontier #1 has some interesting threads but it isn't 100% clear yet how things may all fit together, but the Psycho Pirate and last page reveal were favorite moments for the guys.

The Starling Tribune: An Unofficial Arrow TV Show Fan Podcast
The Starling Tribune Reporters SP and Chris review the 2019 Arrowverse Crossover Crisis On Infinite Earths Part One (technically Supergirl Season 5 Episode 9) with the help of Michelle's notes once again. Michelle was out sick for the week. The reporters discuss the final Arrow included crossover episode part one including why you should enjoy these episodes while you have access to them, that this is simply the MOST AMBITIOUS crossover in the history of television spanning SIX currently airing television shows, why its time to geek out over all the cameos, the reporter's takes on the Earth-16 adventure (more to come in a later episode), the reporter's roses and thorns with this episode of the crossover, why Arrow fans might feel cheated at the big Arrow moment and Marc Guggenheim's reasons for it,if the crossover can be produced like a 5 episode miniseries or a 5 episode premium streaming series, why James Bamford would have been a great addition to the Supergirl episode production staff, and what was that deal between the Monitor and Oliver Queen about anyway? Witness to Anti-Monitor's actions Everything is doomed Thorns: SP Disconnected episode by episode production Focused on the show episode's cast (In this case Supergirl) Plot progressing too fast (Better on second viewing) Vast destruction and death not easily comprehensible Too much, too quick Jonathan's single escape wasn't necessary - why Earth-16? William not in Crossover and doesn;'t get to experience Oliver dying Batwoman's timeline Where did Mia's Arrow suit come from? Supergirl subplots - especially Lena Luther was not necessary How many billions died because Lena argues about helping? Ray was vulnerable while giving Batwoman upgrade Arrow's death scene - full quiver to no quiver instantly Where are his knives/blades? Scene cut short Arrow dies on Supergirl - not on Arrow.Pretty big deal. Pariah just appears like Harbinger. No origin story Chris Lena sucks pacing seemed off. Ollie death to ‘subvert our expectations' bs Ollie's magic quiver shadow demons looks like dementors Michelle - don't see Lyla become Harbinger or her relationship w/Monitor; don't see Nash become Pariah; wanted tower to become part of plot like in comics; wish crossover treated like 5 hour movie, not upset Oliver died in Part 1, but just because it's called Supergirl doesn't mean all the stupid subplots from the show have to be in the crossover (I think we've had this complant every crossover) Roses SP - “Age Of Heroes” Multiverse Intro Worldbuilding - All the Earths, all of DC's screen coming together 4th Wall broken early and often - didn't take itself too seriously Homages to 78 Superman with Jonathan was cool Chyron's really helped map out where people were Supergirl and Superman comforting each other in the face of tremendous loss - DEO Balcony Avenger's Age Of Ultron battle around the machine / Harry Potter Tons of female leads. Elseworlds was this year's CW crossover. But this year we saw a new character introduced, Batwoman. Flash, Green Arrow and Supergirl make their way to Gotham City investigating John Deegan. Batwoman is not happy to have them in her city. Due to the epic nature of the crossover, the GSM shows did a mega podcast roundtable. Elseworlds: At the end of night one of the crossover, we found out that Dr. John Deegan was given the book by the Monitor and was in Gotham City. After detouring though Star City, Ollie-Flash, Barry-Arrow and Supergirl head over to Gotham. They run into some muggers and are taken into custody by the GCPD. They are sprung and taken to Wayne Tower. There they are greeted by Kate Kane. She has taken over the tower and offers to let them use it. They learn from her that Deegan is over Arkham and head over there for answers. Cisco, Kaitlin, and Diggle show up filling them in on the appearance of Earth 90's Flash and the message. Kara & Kaitlin distract the staff. Barry & Oliver confront Deegan, who frees the inmates and escapes. In a battle with an inmate Scarecrow's fear toxin is spilt and Arrow & Flash battle each other thinking they are battling Merlin & Thawne. Batwoman comes to save the day. In Arkham we had shout outs to Mister Freeze, Scarecrow, Penguin, Poison Ivy, Clayface, Riddler, Psycho-Pirate and the Luke Fox a.k.a. Batwing. Elseworlds - Batwoman Saves The Day: Elseworlds saw the formal introduction of Batwoman and the city of Gotham into the CW Flarrowverse. It seems that Bruce/Batman left Gotham 3 years ago and it fell to pieces. Wayne Enterprises fell and so did the city. They seem to be canonizing that this is the Nolan Batman's Gotham. But Bruce's cousin Kate Kane is on the job as Batwoman. It seems even she doesn't know where Batman went. But she is there to protect her city. All the drama that our heroes are bringing is making things worse. She just wants them out of the city. However she and Supergirl are World's Finest in her eyes. They both know each other's secret identities. Our heroes may have left Gotham, but we have not seen the last of Batwoman. Summary: Elseworlds was a fun crossover that checked so many boxes for the fans. Part 1 gave us Smallville shout outs and a battle with Amazo (seen in many of the animated series). Part 2 gave us the canonization of 90's Flash, a Green Lantern Diggle, and Batwoman. Part 3 was an alt-Superman vs Superman battle with Arrow making a bargain with the Monitor. We all felt part 3 was the weakest and Supergirl's show got hijacked. But the setup for next year's Crisis on Infinite Earths has us pumped. It was also a blast to do a crossover podcast with Arrow Squad, Central City Underground and Maid of Steel. With 7 podcasters and a ton of listener feedback it was a fun, but late night. We hope you enjoy the podcast! Cougar's Comic Corner: Karen and several of us talked about characters and plot points in Elseworlds that are teeing us off for Crisis. The Justice Society battles Psycho Pirate, Solomon Grundy, and deals with having Johnny Thunder as a member of the team.Affiliate link included.Transcript below:Graham:The Justice Society battles Solomon Grundy, Psycho Pirate and a mysterious visitor from the future. Find out all about it as we take a look at All-Star Comics Archives Vol. 7, straight ahead. [Intro Music]Announcer:Welcome to the Classy Comics podcast where we search for the best comics in the universe. From Boise Idaho, here is your host Adam Graham. Graham:Some of the earliest collections published by D.C. were the hardcover D.C. archives. These books cost $50 each at the time of their original pressing and they started producing them in the 90s. This particular book was released in 2001 and All-Star Comics Archives Vol. 7 collects issues 29 to 33 of All-Star Comics and features the Justice Society of America, the world's first superhero team. This volume features their post-war adventures and the good news is that if you want to read the stories, you don't have to hunt down a copy of this book. You can purchase individual issues of All-Star Comics out of the comixology or Amazon Kindle comic store for $1.99 an issue and so for five issues that adds up to be $10 and if you wait for a half off or buy one get one free sale, it's even a less than that. The big advantage of this particular book is the introductions from Roy Thomas. Roy Thomas was a great comics writer in his own right and he was also noted for a lot of nostalgic comics, comics that were set in the Golden Age or fleshed out Golden Age continuity. For example, at Marvel, he wrote The Invaders and at D.C., he wrote the All Star Squadron and he just loves the Golden Age of comics, has such a wonderful appreciation and knowledge and so reading books that have his introductions on it, that is really the big benefit. So, that's the one thing you miss if you read them digitally.Alright, so let's go ahead and we will get to talking about the Justice Society and the issues. In this book the roster is set. Now, the comics are approximately forty pages an issue, which is down from the Golden Age and in accordance with that there was a shrinking of the team. At times there were as many as 9 members of the Justice Society but this was shrunk down to six plus a secretary. More on that in a moment. The team was made up of The Flash, in this case Jay Garrick, Green Lantern, who is Alan Scott and not part of any intergalactic Green Lantern Corps, Hawkman, then there's Doctor Midnite. He is a hero who was blinded but discovered that he was able to see in complete darkness and also figured out a way to make goggles so that he could see when it was light out. Some have considered him a predecessor to Daredevil. Then there's the Atom, Al Pratt. The Golden Age Atom didn't have any striking power. He was just a short guy who was also really tough and could really hit very hard, though later he would gain some super strength. Then there was Johnny Thunder, who at times I found to be annoying but sometimes, and I think mostly in this volume, I found to be amusing. He is a bit of a dope. He's a private investigator, not a whole lot of talent or fighting ability, a very comical fellow until he says the magic words “say you”, or an appropriate variation thereof and The Thunder Bolt, this magical pink creature appears and is able to do Johnny's bidding and often resolve problems. Wonder Woman is the secretary of the Justice Society at this point. This is a really odd situation that feels really, really sexist as well as a bit stupid. You send the Atom and Johnny Thunder out on missions but Wonder Woman sits back at the headquarters. So, it's a question of what's going on.Wonder Woman had met with and teamed up with the Justice Society back in All-Star comics number 13 ...
