Producer/Host: R.W. Estela Hi, I'm RW Estela: Since 1991, I've been presenting A Word in Edgewise, WERU's longest-running short feature, a veritable almanac of worldly and heavenly happenings, a confluence of 21st-century life in its myriad manifestations, international and domestic, cosmopolitan and rural, often revealing, as the French say, the more things change, the more they stay the same — though not always! Sometimes in addressing issues affecting our day-to-day lives, in this age of vagary and ambiguity, when chronological time is punctuated elliptically, things can quickly turn edgy and controversial, as we search for understanding amid our dialectic. Tune in Monday mornings at 7:30 a.m. for an exciting journey through space and time with a few notable birthdays thrown in for good measure during A Word in Edgewise . . . About the host: RW Estela was raised as a first-generation American in Colorado by a German mother and a Corsican-Basque father who would become a three-war veteran for the US Army, so RW was naturally a military brat and later engaged in various Vietnam-era civil-service adventures before paying his way through college by skiing for the University of Colorado, playing Boulder coffeehouses, and teaching. He has climbed all of Colorado's Fourteeners; found work as an FAA-certificated commercial pilot, a California-licensed building contractor, a publishing editor, a practitioner of Aikido, and a college professor of English; among his many interdisciplinary pursuits are the design and building of Terrell Residence Library (recently renamed the Terrell House Permaculture Living & Learning Center at the University of Maine), writing Building It In Two Languages (a bilingual dictionary of construction terminology), aerial photo documentation of two dam removals (Great Works and Veazie) on the Penobscot River, and once a week since 1991 drafting an installment of A Word In Edgewise, his essay series addressing issues affecting our day-to-day lives — and WERU's oldest continuous short feature. When pandemics do not interfere, he does the Triple Crown of Maine open-water ocean swims (Peaks to Portland, Islesboro Crossing, and Nubble Light Challenge) and the Whitewater Downriver Point Series of the Maine Canoe and Kayak Racing Organization. While the SAT changed in a very big way during the digital transition, the exam has continued to evolve in a way that test takers need to understand. Amy and Mike invited educator Lori Goldstein to review new trends in SAT Reading & Writing. What are five things you will learn in this episode? How have the Words in Context questions changed? What is the new way in which "weaken the claim" questions are appearing? What is the new twist in the Transitions questions? What have been important changes to the Rhetorical Synthesis questions? Should students do RW module questions in order? MEET OUR GUEST Lori Goldstein grew up in NY and NJ and attended the University of Pennsylvania, earning a degree in Communications. She worked in television for a while (behind the scenes) and then took a job in Florida. Eventually, Lori started selling sailboats in Miami and Ft. Lauderdale, which provided her the opportunity to go sailing every chance she had. After raising her family, Lori decided to become a math teacher. She enrolled to get the credits needed to re-learn all the high school math that she had forgotten. This was actually fun for her, allowing her inner nerd to come out. She started tutoring kids in math. Eventually, one parent asked if she could help their daughter with the SAT. "Why not?" she said. The rest is history. Lori previously appeared on this podcast in episode 235 for a Test Prep Profile and in episode 538 to discuss All About Digital SAT Reading & Writing. Lori can be reached at circletestprep.com. Rodrigo Dominguez Sotomayor, Partner at White & Case LLP Most US buyers approach Latin America M&A the same way they do a domestic deal — optimize the process, close fast, move on. That approach gets deals killed. Rodrigo Dominguez Sotomayor, Partner at White & Case LLP, has spent 25 years closing transactions across every major Latin America market. In this episode, he walks through what actually determines outcomes: antitrust consent timelines, labor regimes that make post-close restructuring expensive, and the relationship dynamics that can unwind a billion-dollar deal a week before signing. What You'll Learn In This Episode: How a PE fund lost a billion-dollar deal over 2% — and why it was avoidable Why LatAm antitrust approvals can take up to nine months and how to plan around them What no employment-at-will actually costs you post-close Why showing up to a LatAm auction without reps & warranties insurance is a disadvantage How to negotiate with family founders when price isn't what closes the deal Why 80% of Latin America deals now run through auctions Your standard diligence process will miss things that kill LatAm deals — statutory severance you didn't model, title searches that go back a hundred years, antitrust consent timelines that block close for months, auctions where R&W insurance is already expected. Running diligence on a LatAm target right now? The M&A Science Hub has two resources built directly from this episode — the LATAM Diligence Delta Checklist and the Latin America M&A Entry Playbook — plus an AI tutor trained on 400+ practitioner conversations you can pressure-test your current deal against. Members get access before the episode goes public. → Access inside the Intelligence Hub — members only. This episode is sponsored by DealRoom Stop juggling six different tools to run one deal. DealRoom brings pipeline management, diligence tracking, document sharing, and team collaboration into one platform. Purpose-built for M&A teams who need to move fast without losing control. request your demo today: https://hubs.ly/Q03ZMvQX0 ____________________ Episode Chapters [00:04:26] Rodrigo's background: 25 years across Latin America M&A [00:06:57] How a cross-border acquisition actually starts [00:10:17] Bilateral deals and family-owned businesses [00:12:52] Reading the room: when not to push on numbers [00:14:12] The billion-dollar deal that fell apart over 2% [00:20:02] Antitrust consent regimes across LatAm [00:29:49] The union leader story [00:27:14] Labor, employment, and statutory severance [00:34:04] Reps & warranties insurance: now standard in LatAm [00:38:44] Auction vs. bilateral: the 80/20 split [00:44:01] FinTech opportunity in Latin America [00:48:05] NVCA forms and deal documentation [00:52:48] Post-close integration: what actually determines success [00:55:51] Craziest Thing in M&A

On the rising-stars front, we compare two of the most exciting young prospects on tour: Learner Tien and João Fonseca—how their games differ, their ceilings, and who might break through first. Finally, we analyze one of the most compelling matches of the tournament: Jack Draper vs. Novak Djokovic. Alisa is on fire with a message that's resonating with so many: understanding and finding peace with both food noise—the mental chatter around eating—and body noise—the persistent thoughts about how we look and show up in the world. In this episode, she breaks down why these inner messages exist, how they connect to deeper feelings of safety, and what it takes to respond with awareness, truth, and grace. What You'll Learn: What food noise really is: Persistent mental chatter about food that can feel overwhelming. Why it exists: Not all food noise is bad! Hunger is actually a gift—a signal from your body to nourish yourself. The 7 forms of hunger: From true, homeostatic hunger to emotional, social, environmental, habitual, survival, and reward hunger. Understanding which is which can help you respond with awareness rather than guilt. The connection to safety: Increased food noise often points to a deeper sense of insecurity or loss of safety. Body noise: Continual thoughts about our appearance and how we look, and why awareness is the first step in responding differently. Soul work: How sin and brokenness in our world have disrupted our connection to God, ourselves, and others, and why body and food struggles often show up the moment we feel "something is wrong" with our bodies. Hope in community: RW+ offers a space to explore, process, and grow together. Scripture Highlight: Genesis 3:9 reminds us that God seeks us even in our brokenness—and invites us into healing, not shame.

The horrific slaughter of Christians in Nigeria has caught the attention of President Donald Trump and the United States government. Trump has tapped Rep. Riley Moore, R-W.V., to provide a report about the situation unfolding in Nigeria, where estimates place the number of slaughtered Christians well over 50,000 since 2009, with more than 7,000 of these deaths having occurred in 2025 alone. In Congress, Moore was one of the first voices drawing attention to the intensifying atrocities committed against Christians in Nigeria, and he joins “The Signal Sitdown” this week to discuss. “Nigeria is the most dangerous countries on the face of the planet to be a Christian,” Moore told The Daily Signal. “This has been happening for a very long time, and it's getting worse and worse and worse every year.” Keep Up With The Daily Signal Sign up for our email newsletters: https://www.dailysignal.com/email Subscribe to our other shows: The Tony Kinnett Cast: https://megaphone.link/THEDAILYSIGNAL2284199939 The Signal Sitdown: https://megaphone.link/THEDAILYSIGNAL2026390376 Problematic Women: https://megaphone.link/THEDAILYSIGNAL7765680741 Victor Davis Hanson: https://megaphone.link/THEDAILYSIGNAL9809784327 Follow The Daily Signal: X: https://x.com/intent/user?screen_name=DailySignal Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thedailysignal/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheDailySignalNews/ Truth Social: https://truthsocial.com/@DailySignal YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/dailysignal?sub_confirmation=1 Subscribe on your favorite podcast platform and never miss an episode.
