The Legacy of Supergirl for me will always be friends.  The friends that I would not have found if I hadn't entered the superhero world. I began as many did with Arrow. Having no comic knowledge. I sought out a podcast to help understand this new world. The adventures of Oliver Queen were always a little dark for this butterfly, but I kept watching. Not as much for the show itself but for the Arrow Squad and the people it was drawing into its ranks.  Green Butterfly was technically born on the Central City Underground which celebrated The Flash. The brighter, more humorous tone suited my personality better, but I was still waiting for my hero. I had never heard of Supergirl.   I had seen a few superhero movies when I was younger, but my memories were hazy.  Almost everything I knew was coming from these new CW shows.  Then I met the Scarlet Cougar and Miss Ice. They both helped me understand the multiverse that was beginning to unfold in front of me.   I knew from the very first episode that Supergirl was going to be my favorite show.  It was funny, light, and full of hope. I was immediately drawn to the characters and the bond I could already see forming between them.   The podcast was super fun too. I often invented a role for Green Butterfly to play in that week's plot. I always wanted to make people smile so I let my silly side come out.  I love that the characters on our show are not bonded by blood but by something stronger. A deep emotional connection and commitment to each other. They support each other through this life all while keeping the world safe.  I also felt my friendships getting stronger as the show continued. Friendships that I feel may not have existed if Supergirl had not come into our living rooms.   There were aspects of the story that mirrored my life in ways that made the show even more meaningful for me.  One example is when Kara is exposed to kryptonite she is weakened and sometimes nearly paralyzed. I have Cerebral Palsy so when my muscles get sore and tired moving can seem like a monumental task.  Supergirl always fights through and I do too. When they had Alex come out in season 2 I was moved by how much that story resonated with me. The words and emotions Alex was expressing echoed mine from a decade before.     The stories entertained me every week.  However, the people in the real world that I met because of the show will always mean the most.  In the years that have passed I have learned so much about my Superfriends. I understood which story elements would excite them and which one's would drive them crazy. When Miss Ice said she had to step away I was really sad because I was worried Maid of Steel would not continue. Immediately I started praying for a hero and I was rewarded. I can't imagine my life now without Silver Vox. He swooped in when we needed him most.  National City got a new voice to speak the truth about what was happening there and I got a treasured friend.   I could never fill the Scarlet Cougar's shoes. Karen taught me so much about superheroes and really ignited my passion to know more.   It was with her encouragement and the help of John, Geoff and Emilee that I found the bravery within myself to let my voice be heard on a weekly basis. I can't be Scarlet Cougar, but I will always honor her and be your eye in the sky.   The Legacy of Supergirl for me will always be one of fun, friendship, and hope.  Whatever our next adventure holds, I hope you all will join us. Because the most important thing to remember is tv shows will come and go but Superfriends are forever.

What we're nerding out on right now! Ghostbusters: The VOID!  WHAT??? NBA Finals Deep Thoughts Lift Each Other Up This conversation is sparked by having watched the new trailer for the upcoming Batwoman tv show, which will be on CW in the Fall. The trailer bugged me (and others). While I am 100% for strong female leads, empowering women, and seeing women treated equally and valued equally, I'm not a fan of men being bashed and pushed down in the process. This trailer shows a little of that. Plus, it also shows a little disrespect towards Batman, which I'm not ok with. Batwoman, in the comics, LIFTED Batman up. He also lifted Batwoman up. I get it. Women, minorities, and others who I call "disadvantaged" have not been treated and valued equally. There are those who have pushed people in those groups down. That's flat out bullying. But trying to get on top by pushing down the person/group that pushed you down doesn't fix the problem. It just creates reverse-bullying. Not ok. I did say, in the show, that I'm tired of feminism. After discussing that further, I came to realize that I'm NOT tired of feminism. I'm tired of people who abuse feminism. Or anything for that matter. Religion, politics, health, you name it. My hope and goal is ALWAYS to lift each other up. THAT... is how we win. And we ALL win that way. So, instead of pushing others down to get ahead, why not lift each other up? Value each other equally! This is one of the core missions of The Real Brian Show. We lift each other up here! Links Join the TRBS Patreon Community! Send The Real Brian an email! Dear Lord in Heaven, what have we DONE?!? Beatrice la Fleur, aka, Miss Ice, aka, ??? joins Captain Influence, aka, Cosmic Interrogator, and The Real Brian, aka, The Man, on this week's... um... crazy? No... insane? No... out of control? Sure. Episode. Not only that, but Caffeinatrix stops by surprisingly to see The Fricken Chicken and talk with Captain Influence. Not to see nor talk with TRB nor Miss Ice though. Only Captain gets the love this episode. Last week, I touched on the idea of you get more of what you focus on. I wanted to expand on that this week. We've got some good thoughts! We also have our typical nerd out session of lots of fun things guaranteed to better your life. New music, tv show and gaming reviews. It really was a lot of fun and we hope you LOVE this episode as much as we did!! Oh, and you may now refer to me, The Real Brian, as The Man from this day forward. TV Show reviews Bioshock Review (I know I'm late to the game) Some funny stories, plus things we're nerding out on! Deep Thoughts You Get More of What You Focus On I touched on this last week and you really need to listen to the discussion as it will give you the full picture of what we're trying to communicate here. It's easy to focus on things that are negative or create anger, frustration, sadness, etc in us. It's easy to sit on our couches, or in our desk chairs, or on our toilet and rant and complain about everything without getting up to do something about it. Yet, last week, I saw Caffeinatrix, we chatted, and after a really challenging week for me (TRB), she somehow lifted my spirits, put a smile on my face, and helped me to end my week RIGHT. I'm thankful for her and the fact that she unleashed her superhero. Unknowingly! That, plus SevenBlueSeven's story that he shared last week (about his hate and buttons he gives to others) REALLY made me think... It's a great reminder that when we unleash our superhero, even by doing something small like smiling for someone or just listening, we can profoundly lift someone up out of whatever they're dealing with. Additionally, when we form a habit of focusing on the positive and on things that are healthy, good, beautiful, encouraging, empowering, inspiring... you get the picture... then we start to SEE more of that. Consequently, we see less of the negative. Hope you enjoy this discussion. And I hope you JOIN US in focusing on the positive!!! Links Join the TRBS Patreon Community! Send The Real Brian an email! Miss Ice's alter-ego, Beatrice la Fleur, joins our fabulous Friday fellas, The Real Brian and Captain Influenza (seriously, Captain Influence is really that sick). But Beatrice isn't wearing any pants! Um… well… that's awkward… Pants or no pants, Beatrice and the fellas treat us to a show dedicated to entertainment. They discuss gaming, Netflix, and social media, as well as sharing some practical tips and really deep thoughts. In this Episode TRB and Captain Influence are joined by Beatrice La Fleur, Miss Ice's alter-ego Practical tips for surviving in subzero temperatures What's with all the video game hype? Variety on Netflix: overwhelming or awesome? Negativity vs Positivity vs Meh Deep Thoughts with Captain Influenza Hot Gossip: Beatrice Isn't Wearing Any Pants!!! TRB poses an interesting question in this episode, one that is a good litmus test for how we view the world. He asks us to consider what type of information or media engages us most: negative, adrenaline-evoking stories and arguments; positive, endorphin-releasing, happy/feel-good items; or neutral, “safe” choices that don't elicit much of a response. Our truthful response to this question requires more than a first gut-reaction. Both Beatrice and Captain Influence wrestled with their thoughts quite a bit before each of them agreed with TRB that while our society's preferences may be skewed toward negative input and engagement, we need a massive paradigm shift so we can begin to engage in ways that are more positive and uplifting overall. Not to say there is something inherently wrong with having a negative response; TRB even talks about how he and Sarah were so moved by the movie Taken that they donate funds to an organization that helps women coming out of sex trafficking. Pain, cruelty, and sorrow are unavoidable in our culture. As the sagacious Beatrice points out, in order to understand and appreciate true joy, one must first experience deep sorrow. But that doesn't mean we need to be totally consumed by negativity or seek it out nonstop. Our hearts aren't meant to deal with a constant influx of heavy emotion; the more attention we give in one area, of life, the less we have to give in another. We need to be wise and choose where we will devote our time and energy. If we are not willing to do our part to turn negativity around by stepping in and making a difference, there is no reason for us to wallow in it. We do not need to take the world upon our shoulders. Imagine a world in which everyone worked on doing their own part to seek out and share joy. What would it be like if we took the time to look one another in the eye and express the things we love about each other? How would you feel if your boss took you aside and said, “You know, when you did that presentation, I could tell you worked hard and put a lot of energy into it. You were so well-prepared. Thanks for doing your best.” Or if your spouse surprised you with a clean home and a thoughtful card just because you are the one their heart delights in? How would our world be different if every child was told how precious and loved they are right here and now, instead of being asked to perform more or better next time? What can you do to influence those people in your circle? How can you break the cycle of gossip and anger that is so constant in our world? What actions can you take to diffuse a tense situation and turn it into a learning experience that is meaningful and beneficial for everyone involved? (hint: Captain Influence touched on this in Episode 150! Go back and listen to what he had to say!) Respond Seriously, what are your thoughts on this question? TRB and Captain Influence would love to hear what you think, and possibly even share your ideas on the show. What do you get when you pack the Queen of Ice, a Real Brian and a Captain of Influence in the same podcast? The most random opening to an episode you will EVER hear. That is a promise. But we've got a lot to talk about together, including Netflix's Christmas Chronicles… Tom Cavanagh… and the balance between encouragement and criticism. In This Episode The most random crap you'll ever hear Christmas Shopping: Online or in-store? 3 degrees of Tom Cavanagh Christmas Chronicles! Balance between encouragement and criticism Deep Thoughts with Captain Influence Faking It Let's be honest... sometimes we just don't know what we're doing. And sometimes, instead of owning up to it, we pretend like we do know what we're doing. "Fake it until you make it" is a saying for a reason... sometimes by faking confidence or competence, those qualities can become a reality. I used to wield this tactic a lot, and in hindsight I think I recognize that I knew I was capable of doing something but just hadn't learned it yet. So whenever I pretended to know something, I would leave the situation and throw myself into learning it. Faking it isn't always a bad thing, but it shouldn't be a replacement for gaining knowledge. With the right kind of optimism and motivation, we should never be content to fake it in lieu of learning! Encouragement & Criticism In case I wasn't clear on the podcast, since we talked about a lot regarding this espresso shot, I do think encouragement is essential to growth. If we aren't given any clue as to whether we are are the right track, or praised when we do well, there is no motivation to continue doing that... nor to push ourselves harder. In that same vein, I believe that when encouragement exists entirely without criticism, arrogance and egoism prevent us from seeing other perspectives. It is difficult, in any situation, to see things outside the scope of what we know... but when we close ourselves off to feedback, especially when that feedback can be hard to hear, we make our circle of perception even smaller. Criticism can make us stronger, but it takes practice. It's something we both have to open ourselves up to and receive enough of before its true benefits can start to take effect. I focused more on balance in the discussion, rather on the benefits of encouragement, but I do think encouragement is important! In fact, one of the habits I've come to adopt in my own practices of providing feedback is to always begin with the positives of my analysis or assessment. What was good? What worked? What did someone do well? And then jump into observations about what needs to be improved upon or fixed. Whenever I begin my feedback with negatives, it actually derails the whole conversation because (quite often) the recipient of my feedback perceives that I am attacking them. Even if that was not my intention. None of us are perfect! While some people are good at providing feedback, others are not. Just because someone, or many someones, are bad at it does not mean we should close ourselves off to it completely. It is as much our responsibility to develop tough skin, sort through the criticism, and understand what was meant to be beneficial and what was intended to harm. Hopefully in doing so, we can become better at providing feedback to others. Links Join our Slack Channel! After being frozen in carbonite for an unspecified amount of time in an undisclosed place, Miss Ice emerged! In a world dripping with options, it wouldn't hurt us to be picky and choosy from time to time! Miss Ice joins The Real Brian to talk about broadening our perspectives and how being selective isn't really a bad thing. In This Episode Peppermint and Predator Taking a break from TV Sports! Thoughts on perspective Brian's on the Matt Bellamy bandwagon! Picky and Choosy We should be picky and choosy. The first time this was said to me was at work, when we were under a barrage of requests to get certain aspects of our applications enhanced or built-out. The department's product owner started saying this and at first it was really hard to dispel the angry, frustrated voices who'd been trying to push their own agendas and were falling flat. But then, as we became pickier and choosier, it finally gave us time to start flexing our muscles and show our internal clients that we hear what's causing them pain, but provide them with solutions that address a more holistic need. Watching this process happen at work made me start thinking about this in other aspects of my life. The most obvious category was my media intake. When I stopped and thought about it, it was like there were dozens of angry people yelling at me, demanding my attention, and I didn't care about ANY of them. I wanted to care about something again... and by stepping back, thinking critically about what I want out of my media, it made me see that I don't need to consume everything. I can look for the shows and movies that grab my attention, and turn off the ones that don't. Amazingly, I don't miss it! I do a lot of other things now that I was just kind of ignoring before. Shopping for clothes to replace all my old crappy ones. Spending oodles of time with my 2-month old nephew! If I could only incorporate grocery shopping into my routine... Trust me, you'll have to listen for more Olympics & amazing people Finding a social platform for conversation Social media...arg! Endorphin rush! Where does yours come from? Does this facial hair make me look fat? The title of this week's episode comes from another conversation he and I had about two years ago! Randomness in the form of Emilee and Brian at its finest. Living in Minnesota, I see more than my share of beards. Some of them are epic, some of them need to be shaved yesterday. But when they're done right they really suit a man and I can appreciate them for their bizarre uniqueness. Not uniqueness in the way they're maintained or shaped, but uniqueness in just considering that human men naturally grow hair on their face. It's so awesomely weird, and still... totally natural. But isn't it more weird to NOT have a beard? Maybe not in this day and age, but consider generations past. Consider a time before razors and blades. Today, shaving AND not shaving is a decision. It was Alexander the Great who sort of established the norm for shaving in western civilization, but shaving wasn't a concept he invented. Think about classic photographs of noble Egyptians, who strategically shaved their faces and their heads. Back and forth, the scale was tilted in favor, then not in favor, of shaving. Alexander the Great established shaving as a norm in his time (300s BC), but then the leader of the Roman world, Publius Aelius Hadrianus, intentionally pushed back, grew a beard and established facial hair as a new form of manliness. Historical records account for the resurgence of beards in what they call "Beard Movements", which is interesting because I could find the inversion of that. I couldn't find "Shaving Movements". It's fascinating. With just a little searching on the interwebs a learned a lot about beards I've never thought of. What side do you come down on? Beard. No beard. Happy Superhero Friday! We're so glad you're joining us for this Miss-Ice-Takeover installment of the podcast. Over the last couple months we've talked a lot about different aspects of community and about being involved in the process that brings people in and makes them feel like they're part of something. This week is no different, except that instead of talking about community in the abstract, Brian and I get really real. Ready? In This Episode Sports... Pro vs College Fantasy Football and the MASSIVE MONEY MACHINE Spotify (did you know Brian's public playlist is collab? Yeah.) Real and Deep Q&A Real and Deep While it is never our intention to make you feel uncomfortable, we hope that you can appreciate that sometimes it means getting a little uncomfortable in order to break down the barriers of conversation. Over the last couple years, really since my dad died, I've been noticing the array of topics people won't talk about (even outside of politics and religion). They're often unique to each person, or subset of people, but almost always have the common ancestor of requiring vulnerability. Being vulnerable is difficult. By its own definition, it makes us vulnerable. It's like putting on armor to go into battle, then taking it off right when the fighting begins. The interesting thing I've found as I've learned to be more vulnerable is that part of what is so liberating about it is that I'm not lying to myself about what I'm capable of. Armor makes us feel safer, even though it does not protect us 100%. Removing that armor reminds us that we are only human and that there are a lot of things we are susceptible to. And as a result, we live (or we fight) differently. Without armor in a battle, we'd take a different approach than we would if we had that layer of protection armor offers. The intention with our discussion in this episode was to give you all a glimpse in to how Brian and I see community. We see it filled with open discussions about difficult topics. We see it as being transparent and honest about actions and thought processes, and then letting one another speak into our lives so that we can grow from where we are. We hope you enjoy our discussion!

Brr! It's cold in here! I was hoping it wasn't just me feeling the chill this week. I can take a bit more of the icy weather than most, but this week it was downright chilling! How fantastic was it to have Wentworth Miller as Captain Cold on season 1 episode 4 of The Flash? The puns were in rapid-fire mode as not only the episode title is indicative of the band of super villains yet to come, but also the allusions to "heat" and "cold" welcome Miller and former co-star of Prison Break Dominic Purcell into the fold. The Shadow and I, Miss Ice, try to break down this phenomenal episode as best we can! There's a lot to cover, from Cisco creating the cold gun that brings about the events of the episode to the repercussions of that creation as it pertains to Barry, to Felicity's (breathtaking) presence in Central City. In this first transmission of season 1 of The Flash, Miss Ice and The Shadow waste no time in getting down to business. Almost immediately, several questions and Easter eggs are laid down for the future of this show. Barry's mother was murdered when he was 11 and his father was arrested immediately and convicted for her murder. Now in Iron Heights for 14 years, Barry is still determined to uncover the truth, being the only one who believes in his father's innocence. He is adamant that there was someone else in the living room with him and his father that fateful morning, a ball of light. Or...were there two balls of light? The Shadow and Miss Ice are pretty certain they see two distinct blurs, one yellow and one red, very reminiscent of Flashpoint Paradox. And yet, Barry tells the gang at S.T.A.R. Labs that he saw a man inside the light (singular man). The Shadow lays down a great theory that we might wait the whole season, if not multiple seasons, to uncover in its entirety.
