Send us a Text Message.Diggle me this: how does a bloke from the other side of the pond not only break into American comics but become one of the industry's leading writers? When it comes to Andy Diggle, it's about a lot of hard work and a little bit of luck. After starting as an editor on such UK magazines as Judge Dredd, Sonic the Comic, and 2000 AD (in the year 2000 AD!), Andy started writing his own stories in the same magazines. Then it was off to America, where he started writing for Vertigo and DC on titles like Lady Constantine, The Losers, Swamp Thing, Adam Strange, Silent Dragon, and Green Arrow: Year One (which formed the blueprint for the Arrow TV series). Over at Marvel, he wrote Thunderbolts and the Daredevil crossover event Shadowland, among other titles. Now, he's helping resurrect DC's Elseworlds imprint with the miniseries Gotham by Gaslight: The Kryptonian Age, the debut issue of which just came out on 6/11/24! A DIFFERENT KIND OF TENSION – BUZZCOCKS with special guest, Paul Hanley. Buzzcocks' 1979 album, 'A Different Kind of Tension' may have been released the same year as ‘Singles Going Steady,' but it is a different shape of beast to ‘Singles.' For a start it was recorded intentionally as an album rather than cobbled together by a naive U.S. label in search of punk dollar. Track three is “You Say You Don't Love Me” which automatically rates the album a straight 10, but there are other objects d'interest up in this sweet, sweet bastard of a record. By this point, on their third studio album proper, Pete Shelley was firmly entrenched as the band's driving creative force—yet songs by Steve Diggle like “Sitting Round at Home” and “You Know You Can't Help It” are rough-hewn gems in the catalogue worth seeking out. For the most part, as for majority of their output, the songs are short, sharp, punk-pop shocks that electrify and energize—and while their formula may have been perceived by some as tired by this point, the band would continue on in various incarnations right up until the present day. Even now, with Shelley gone, Diggle has chosen to keep pushing Buzzcocks into the future. The eternal teenagers somehow continue their path, unswerving, and it's a beautiful thing to both reflect on and behold. With special guest PAUL HANLEY Man of letters and former Fall drummer, Paul Hanley has written a book on Buzzcocks called ‘Sixteen Again: How Pete Shelley & Buzzcocks Changed Manchester Music (And Me),' to give it its full title. The book mixes together biography, interview, critique and social history to create a full picture of the legendary Manchester group, equally beloved of fans of punk, post punk and indie. Route Publishing – who have also published Hanley's ‘Leave The Capital: A History Of Manchester Music In 13 Recordings' and the masterful ‘Have A Bleedin Guess: The Story Of Hex Enduction Hour' – have the following to say: "Paul Hanley's obsession with Buzzcocks peaked between the ages of 14 and 16, exactly the age when ‘favourite band' actually means something important. An essential part of the charm of Buzzcocks to him were their proximity and approachability." Paul Hanley is also one half of the drumming duo who power recent Q Album Of The Year, House Of All, and co-host of the Oh! Brother podcast with kin Steve Hanley, JASON BARNARD of Strange Brew podcasts was in the interviewer's chair. This podcast in association with Strange Brew podcasts. There is no way around it; you have to lead... Here's the elephant in the room: Being in a leadership position can be a lonely and isolated endeavor. As service design professionals, we often find ourselves in situations where people look up to us on what to do next. They put their trust in us to set out the course and direction. Great, right? Well, if you're the one who has to carry the weight of making the correct call each and every time, it can easily lead to unhealthy situations and potentially burnout. Not to mention that the challenges we work on are simply too complex to solve in isolation. But it doesn't have to be this way, as our guest, Amelia Diggle, shares in this episode. In our conversation, Amelia shares some unconventional leadership practices that promote collaboration, effectiveness, and even fun, from working out loud to deep listening and mindfulness. Amelia's insights offer a much-needed, refreshing perspective on compassionate leadership. As you'll hear, regardless of whether you hold a formal leadership role or not, you can inspire change by modeling positive behavior. So please join us for the chat and what it takes to become a compassionate leader who achieves results. --- [ 1. The AncientBiotics Consortium is a group of experts from the sciences, arts and humanities, who are digging through medieval medical books in hopes of finding ancient solutions to today's growing threat of antibiotic resistance. The group's first undertaking was recreation and investigation of the antimicrobial properties of an ancient eyesalve described in Bald's Leechbook, one of the earliest known medical textbooks, which contains recipes for medications, salves and treatments. The consortium found that the eyesalve was capable of killing MRSA, a discovery that generated a lot of media attention and sparked expanded research efforts. The group brought data scientists and mathematicians into the consortium (work driven by Dr. Erin Connelly from the University of Warwick). Together, the researchers began scouring early modern and medieval texts and turning them into databases. The goal? To mathematically data mine these recipes see which ingredients were very often or non-randomly combined in ancient medical remedies. Team Flash has a surprise birthday party for Barry with John Diggle and Wally West in attendance. While there, Wally talks about projecting his consciousness into other timelines. Ramsey Rosso arrives and knocks out the guests. He makes Barry feel guilty for getting extra years to live while his friends die and explains to Wally that the timelines are alternate Earths of a reborn multiverse. He takes over Wally's mind and has him kill Barry. Barry awakens in purgatory with Oliver Queen, whom after the Crisis has lived on as the Spectre, watching over and protecting the new multiverse. Oliver helps him accept the guilt he feels and resurrects Barry while temporarily returning with him as Green Arrow. Wally opens a gateway into the multiverse, allowing Rosso to spread his infection. Barry helps Wally break Rosso's influence and Khione restores Diggle, who joins the others in holding off Rosso. This allows Oliver to get a clear shot into the gateway and purge the multiverse of Rosso's infection, which restores everyone. Oliver depowers Rosso and cures his HLH. Afterwards, Oliver explains that Khione is connected to the natural world and says goodbye to Diggle and Barry.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
After a bit of a hiatus we're back with The Flash and it was worth the wait. We finally get an episodes fit for the final season. They gave us Wally, Diggle and most importantly, Stephen Amell back in the suit as Oliver Queen. We didn't realize how much we missed seeing Amell kick ass as Oliver Queen until we saw this episode again. After some very questionable (let's be honest, they were bad) episodes, episode 9 felt like an episode that fit in line with what the final season of the Flash should be with Flash fan service. We also get the open acknowledgement of the existence of the new multiverse (not just new timelines) and a proper goodbye between Diggle and Oliver. Hell they even made us feel better about Diggle giving up the power ring to be with his family. This was a good episode and it gave us hope for what's coming next. We also talk about the Flash movie trailer and the new Transformers trailer. Kriss and Dpalm record the Mailbag at the end of every month. Links:https://www.odysseus-unbound.org/ Faceook YouTube Book: Odysseus Unbound: The Search for Homer's Ithaca In the series we have look at some elements within Greek history that have connections to traditional tales and mythology. Some big examples of these were when we looked at the Trojan War, Mycenae and the Minoans. Well once again we are looking at historical connections to what can be found within the ancient writings of Homer, this time with a focus on the Odyssey. This episode will be focused around the idea of locating the island of Ithaca that Homer describes within the Odyssey. For a long time, controversy has surrounded the actual location of Homers Ithaca, with many since ancient times questioning whether the Island we know today as Ithaki was actually the Ithaca of the Odyssey. In our modern time, one such man also questioned this idea. Robert Bittlestone with a Classics, Science and economics background, would return from the business world to his love of Classics to delve into the mystery around the home island of Odysseus. Robert would develop a working theory that would be eventually presented to an audience at Cambridge University. This is where Prof. James Diggle would become involved, seeing great merit in what Robert presented. Prof. Diggle would go on to contribute to Robert Bittlestone's book, Odysseus Unbound. The search for Homer's Ithaca. Unfortunately, Robert would pass away in 2015, however his legacy and work would continue on with the creation of the Odysseus Unbound foundation, with a number of professionals and academics making up its members, including Roberts son's Simon and Mathew. The Odysseus unbound Foundation is an educational charity dedicated to advancing knowledge of the ancient world. Specifically, we conduct and promote scientific and historical research to discover the actual locations of historical sites that have been described in ancient literature such as Homer's Odyssey. They are committed to publishing widely all their results so our understanding of the ancient world and the origins of our civilization today is enhanced to everyone's benefit. The Foundation was formed in 2017. It is built upon the inspiration of the late Robert Bittlestone whose ground-breaking ideas about the location of Ithaca, the homeland of Odysseus described by Homer in the Odyssey, are showing significant promise.Prof. James Diggle, Trustee of the Odysseus Unbound foundation is Emeritus Professor of Greek and Latin at Cambridge University and a Life Fellow of Queens' College. His publications include The Cambridge Greek Lexicon (Editor-in-Chief, Cambridge, 2021), The Oxford Classical Text of Euripides (Oxford, 1981-94), Euripidea: Collected Essays (Oxford, 1994) and Theophrastus: Characters (Cambridge, 2004).He was University Orator at Cambridge for eleven years and has published a selection of his speeches in Cambridge Orations (Cambridge, 1994). He is a Fellow of the British Academy and a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Athens. He was awarded his CBE in the 2022 New Year Honours for services to classical scholarship.Support the show

The Waverider is in Smallville as we await the outcome of the merger. Steel Squared are in the void between worlds and they send their energy & the pod to destroy the portals. Tal-Rho tries to take down Ally but is being drained before Jordan saves him. Clark has Tal-Rho throw him into the sun to jumpstart his powers and it works. He is able to save the Irons, split Ally back into two, and reverse the merger. Lois helps Kyle get back from the Inverse World. Sam also shares with the boys that he has seen other worlds with Justice Leagues. But Superman is the only powered hero on this world. This tells us this is not Earth Prime and not the Superman we saw in the Arrowverse crossovers. The Cushings are still broken up seemingly for good but in a better place. Sarah knows all of Jordan & Clark's secrets and she and Jordan start fresh. Lois tells Chrissy the secret about Superman. Diggle approaches John Henry for help on the Intergang leader who killed this world's John Henry. Tal-Rho is living in the Inverse World now. EPISODE 14 “You Are More Than Just Your Powers” The penultimate episode of Season 2 is upon us! Sam and Henry pay tribute to the late, grate artist Tim Sale. The Pals share a lot of frustrations with some things they liked sprinkled in. Also some signature tangents about TV trends and still wondering where is Supergirl??? Greetings Super friends! Welcome to Superman & Lois & Pals. I'm Henry Bernstein and alongside me is my favorite super pal, Professor Sam Brody. Let's talk about Superman and Lois Season 2 Episode 14S02E14 - “Worlds War Bizarre” Directed by:Sheelin ChokseyWritten By:Michael Narducci"Superman is rendered powerless by Ally's attack, and the others rally as the two Earths merge."Romantic violin version of the theme over the title screenJohn Henry/Nat - Ally is an energy parasite, can absorb power from anything. Nat being assertive of going in there with John Henry. Love it. Ugh, I'm with Nat, “Dad don't do this.” LET HER HELP. Nat could definitely get through those safeguards. So John Henry was right that Nat shouldn't come but not for the right reasons. She obviously needed to save everyone but she could've helped him. Lana - “This is what tired looks like”, um Lana you look amazing. Smallvillians riled up again. They're so cartoony. Nice to hear Kyle and Lana finally talk about his infidelity. Why are the Smallvillians laughing at Lana. They literally went through an army of Kryptonians attacking them last season. Obnoxious George is back. Lol to “you're flying in and saving the day.” Lana did you fucking tell everyone Superman lost his powers? What the fuck Lana?! That's not your call to make. Great now Sarah is going to be mad at Lana. More CW nonsense. Lois/Chrissy- Bizarro world taking over, text was backwards. Ally/Inverse - Wait was Bizarro Lana doing with her eyes?Lara - Cells not healed? Sam explain please. He's like a baby again? Developed powers at 4! How is Lara's projection being affected by the merge? Isn't it Kryptonian technology?Clark - Why does he need to wear his glasses all the time when he's Clark? Is it just a visual cue, a marketing thing? Seriously, it doesn't make sense. Why does he need to wear his glasses in the fortress with John Henry and Lara? We talked about this in the first episode. The kids never saw their dad without glasses? Incredible Lois pep-talk to Clark and frankly to US, reminding him what Superman means. Superman is a “Friend”Jordan/Jonathan - Kids, suit up and do your job. Blah blah Sarah/Jordan blah blah. Well now Sarah knows. Nice angry red eyes of anger Jordan. Ok that fight was awesome.
We're back after a little bit of a break to talk about the last two episodes of the Flash. We get the guy that always makes Flash episodes better, Thawne. And this time what's better than one Thawne? Two Thawnes. I don't care if Thawne has lost his memory and found love, he's never to be trusted. Never. On sight. ON SIGHT. There are two more episodes left and we know that Thawne is going to be part of that. So that's going to be fun. It's a little sad that they seemed to close the door on Diggle becoming a Green Lantern but with CW being sold, we get it. Oh and we have to talk about the "other" Flash, Ezra Miller. What a dumpster fire that is. WB is in a tough spot to have a star that at the center of your multiverse plan being what seems like, a groomer. Can't be good. I am so sorry... After training Meena, Barry is shown the Biometric Lightning Oscillation Chamber (BLOC), which grants Meena's speed. She introduces him to its co-inventor: Thawne, with his original face, though he doesn't remember his past or Barry. On Lian Yu, Thawne theorizes that he is from an alternate timeline. Barry tries to stop Meena from using the BLOC, but she connects to the Negative Speed Force and begins draining power junctions. The alternate Thawne states that he fell in love with Meena and had visions of the BLOC, but was unaware of the NSF. He and Team Flash find Meena in Keystone City, and he is able to disconnect Meena from the NSF. Later, Ray Palmer informs Team Flash that the Flashpoint Thawne was revived by the Time Wraiths[N 2] and Barry theorizes that he was revived again and brought to Meena. Meanwhile, Cecile's powers grow when she stops a bank robbery and mugging. Mark contacts Caitlin with a new plan to revive Frost. John Diggle approaches Thawne for help in opening his box[N 3], but it disappears when Diggle chooses to remain with his family instead of accepting its power. Thawne is visited by Deon who states that it's time to "fulfill his destiny".Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

With rising temperatures and a changing climate, the range of disease vectors continues to expand into novel areas. This will expose people and animal populations to new diseases, but this issue is seldom discussed in public discourse. Therefore, we bring this issue to the forefront using bluetongue as a model for expanding vector-borne diseases, their impacts on livestock populations, and how we can best enact change in our communities and beyond. Episode Hosts: Caroline Kern-Allely, Tiera McAdam, Adam Hernandez Course Coordinators & Podcast Ringmasters: Colleen Duncan, Molly Carpenter, Treana Mayer Sound Editor: Ethan Fagre Guest: Dr. Christie Mayo, DVM, PhD Summary: We spoke to Cam the Ram, Colorado State University's beloved mascot, in order to get a better understanding of what's been bugging him about climate change. One problem he kept ruminating on was the potential influence of climate change on vector-borne diseases. We began to investigate the issue of vector-borne diseases and discovered that they will increase in prevalence with rising temperatures. Warmer temperatures allow vectors to expand into novel ranges, increase their infective seasons, and change their transmission dynamics. We focused on bluetongue virus disease (BVD) to tell the story of vector-borne diseases of particular note to Cam. In order to do so, we called on the knowledge of Dr. Christie Mayo (DVM, PhD) from Colorado State University, an expert on BVD and virology to give us the inside scoop. Professor James Diggle, editor in chief of the Cambridge Greek Lexicon (Cambridge UP, 2021), joins us to explain the background to this extraordinary project. Setting out to provide a standard for students and professional readers of ancient Greek texts, Diggle's lexicon reflects a wider range of usage than Liddell and Scott, and provides translations that move significantly beyond the often modest, even coy, preferences of these Victorian editors. As the fruit of decades of team-work, this landmark publication will become the primary guide for readers of ancient Greek for decades to come.
