For this conversation, we met at Club Lago in River North (331 W Superior St, Chicago, IL 60654). Owner GianCarlo was kind enough to jump in the car with a variety of items from Lago's menu, and it was all delicious. Also in the car for this episode is Patrick's friend, Jessica. What are the two of them up to? You'll watch/hair, but let's just say your podcast host was immensely humbled by their actions. We talk about Challengers' longevity, as well as Lago's long-running, family-owned, history. Benhur’s safe is safe! Phew! Seriously, masks are still required in-store!! Sheesh. 7 months of Andrew. Woosh! Changes in the X-Men titles this summer! Snikt! New Marvel Legends action figures just announced! Bam! Bad Idea pins… *Sigh* “I Don’t Know” is Unacceptable. Humph. Image’s The Good Asian is an excellent detective (Chinatown Noir) comic! Ka-ching!* *Okay, so I felt a little weird using “Ka-ching” as the sound effect after The Good Asian. I was going for the sound of a cash register to emphasize how much we expect this to sell. To be safe I googled “noise a cash register makes” and both ‘cha-ching’ and ka-ching’ came up at the top, so I went with it.
As people are being encouraged to work from home, offices and facilities are shutting down, and sports and entertainment are on hold, what's the effect on small business? Joining me for this episode is old friend Patrick Brower, co-owner of the two fantastic Challengers Comics shops in Chicago. This is the first episode of a temporary new direction for Car Con Carne. During this time of "social distancing," the podcast will take a break from sharing food in a small car with strangers. Instead, the show will feature me and my guests in a video chat (and an audio podcast not long thereafter), eating food while they talk from the relative safety of their own homes. Welcome (for now) to QUARANTINE CON CARNE. Car Con Carne is sponsored by C&H Financial Services.

Burger King unveiled it's Whopperito (a Whopper made like a burrito) on August 15th, and I decided to try it during BK's launch week. Fast food's never been a Car Con Carne "thing," but sometimes I have to point the Mazda 3 in the direction of the zeitgeist. Patrick Brower, co-owner of Challengers Comics and co-host of the excellent behind-the-scenes Yak Channel Network podcast "Contest of Challengers," jumped in the front seat to try the Whopperito with me. Patrick's an old friend and a great conversationalist. Over Whopperitos, we cover: *Patrick's kidney stone. He's been waiting for weeks to pass it. We cover every aspect of the diagnosis and subsequent medical concerns and initiatives, including straining pee (like panning for gold), pain meds and the discomfort of getting an ultrasound. It's a fascinating (and funny) discussion; though perhaps inappropriate for dinner conversation. *Who has the best fast food fries (it's not Burger King) *The nuances of the Whopperito: Donde esta el queso? *We miss Mike Bratton, who in part inspired the Whopperito trip *More Whopperito: "As we're getting deeper, it's getting messier" *The thing I'm doing for the first time in my life that has me excited *The absolute worst wrestler on WWE RAW *Starting "Contest of Challengers" as a brand extension eight years ago *The decision behind sharing all the behind-the-scenes aspects of owning and running a retail store *The horrible discovery I made while watching the Car Con Carne TV pilot *DC Comics' "Rebirth" and its sales impact on Challengers *The lingerie problem in the "Killing Joke" animated movie *"Little people" and Hornswaggle *The "slam dunks" the next Spider-Man movie needs to include *Patrick accepts the blame for the episode's length Tell a friend! Share! Download! Enjoy!
In this week's episode, we'll talk about our spoiler policy moving forward, all of the awesome merchandise revealed at San Diego Comic-Con 2015 from IDW Publishing, Diamond Select Toys, Hollywood Collectables, and a curious Mattel display that has us wondering on their future with the franchise. Troy and Chris also talk about the group photo of Paul Feig's Ghostbusters (2016) cast that was officially released and speculate on what roles each of the actors might be playing in the reimagined series. Oh, and a special thanks to our very first sponsors: Challengers Comics in Chicago and Kerberos Productions!
How does an artist selling directly to their fans through Kickstarter affect a Retail Vendor? Are independently owned shops around the world closing their doors due to direct fan sales? Why not ask a Retailer? Okay, we shall! Patrick Brower of Challengers Comics & Conversation is with us this week to discuss the impact of creator's direct sales on his business.

Happy New Year! Chris, Tom and Mike Norton ring in the new year at Challengers Comics on a very chilly and hungover day. It's a new year and a new decade, so the panel takes the opportunity to look back at how comics and the comics industry has changed during The Aughts. Chris spent New Years Eve with piles of trades. Tom wants less old book, so he gives away huge bag of Legion comics. Mike liked being in charge of Challengers and stumping customers with Blue Beetle trivia. Happy New Year! Sal returns to the panel and is joined by Chris, Tom and Patrick Brower at Challengers Comics. Lots of comics talk gets started with The Great Ten, Tony Bedard, Stumptown, Criminal: The Deluxe Edition, Superman: Secret Origin, Wondermark, Iron Man, Cinderella: From Fabletown With Love, and the awesome Blackest Night rings.
