In this impactful episode of Everyday Black Men, hosts Riker, Reed, The Rider, White Collar Suge, and Sham are joined by special guests Dr. Donovan Roy, Ed.D, Dr. Gucci, and Dr. DeeJ for a powerful discussion on Black excellence in medicine. Dr. Donovan opens with his background and proudly notes that Memphis is now the Blackest city in America. White Collar Suge poses a question about the accessibility of becoming a doctor for those in Black American households, prompting The Rider to reflect on the wide range of motivations behind pursuing medicine. The conversation dives into issues of gatekeeping within the medical field, mentorship, and whether certain students receive preferential treatment, with Reed questioning how politics may shape inclusion. Dr. DeeJ highlights how other communities support their own through medical school, Dr. Gucci contrasts international medical training with U.S. systems, and the episode wraps with insightful takeaways on the power of mentorship and community.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/everyday-black-men--2988631/support.

“Water is a Right: The Fight for Environmental Justice in Detroit” w/ Demeeko WilliamsJoin us with guest Demeeko Williams, Founder and Chief Director of Hydrate Detroit (hydratedetroit.org), to explore the struggle for water justice in one of America's Blackest cities. As part of our Black Liberation and Abolition series, this conversation centers on the racialized politics of water shutoffs, the criminalization of poverty, and the community-led resistance that redefines access to water as a human right — not a commodity.Demeeko will reflect on how systemic disinvestment, environmental racism, and austerity politics have led to Detroiters, predominantly Black and low-income... being denied access to clean water. We unpack how this crisis ties directly into broader abolitionist work: dismantling the structures that make survival a punishment, and building alternatives rooted in care, equity, and collective power.***Turning A Moment Into A Movement Podcast MISSION:To bring awareness, organize, and create content that will be a resource that will aide families, communities, and those seeking Justice for WRONGFUL CONVICTIONS and Injustice. ...and advocating for Justice & Exoneration for GERARD HAYCRAFT. change.org/Justice4GerardTurning A Moment Ino A Moment Team:-Jay Love Host: Founder and Creator of Turning A Moment Into A Movement, The Justice for Gerard Movement, to learn more about The Justice for Gerard Movement go to: www.change.org/Justice4GerardExecutive Board member of Michigan Coalition of Human Rights, G100 Prison Reforms & Reintegration Global Advisory Council Member-Rev. Basically, anything you're afraid of regarding Trump or Project 2025's policies is already in place in Louisiana, says Capital B's national climate reporter Adam Mahoney. Louisiana, ranking second as both the poorest and Blackest state in the country, has voted Republican since 2004. In fact, back in 2020, Donald Trump won it by nearly 20 percent of the vote. In this episode of Nationly, host Juan Diego Ramirez and guest host Sofia Sanchez learn from Adam about how climate and environmental matters are not typically perceived as “everyday voter issues.” And, he explains how Louisiana's nationwide concerns will be answered (or dismissed) at the federal level, by the future president and their administration. It's been subtle in the past, but Dot and Bubble is Doctor Who's first overt homage to Black Mirror, the groundbreaking series that satirizes our relationship with technology in the darkest of ways. It's ironic, then, that this story has one of the subtlest pieces of subtext in the show's history, with a moral message lurking just beneath the skin of a biting script full of references to social media, popular culture, and gadgets that lull us into separating ourselves from the real world. This might be Doctor Who allegory at its finest. Subscribe to our YouTube Channel and become a True Companion of the podcast to get new episodes before everyone else! In the second part of our three-episode mini series, marking the 30th anniversary of the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix at Imola, Matt and Richard take a chronological look at the events of F1's so-called blackest weekend, when both Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna were killed in action. It's been described as a weekend 'when God turned his back', and with good reason, with a series of terrible accidents unfolding one after the other over a period of three days. With personal reminiscences, Matt and Richard tell the story of what happened and how F1 came to lose two much loved drivers in consecutive days. Plus, Richard poignantly shares his reflections on attending Senna's intense, emotional funeral in Sao Paulo. Next time: Matt and Richard discuss the aftermath and lasting legacy of Imola '94. The black vote has been lockstep Democrat for all of living memory, and for just as long conservatives have tried and failed to change that. But is the unprecedented disaster of the Biden Administration finally making change possible? Pastor Mark Burns joins Charlie to describe the massive shift among black men, and why Donald Trump is, in his words, the "blackest president" in American history. Plus, Col. Douglas Macgregor makes the case that the war in Ukraine is about to end — and not in a victory for the Biden Administration. "I'm putting every single ounce of who I am into every single book that I write, so y'all know to expect the blackest books you have ever read from yours truly.” - Derrick BarnesDerrick Barnes' introduction to vulnerable storytelling was through the jazz and R&B records he found in his family's collection. For young Derrick, reading the liner notes in albums was just as important as any other kind of reading. Eventually, artists like Prince, Rakim, and John Coltrane taught him about the power in simply and truly being yourself. Inspired, young Derrick began writing his own poetry and short stories, which served as the beginning of a long and fruitful writing career. A career that includes being the first black creative copywriter for Hallmark cards. In his work as an author, Derrick embodies the authenticity of his idols, being uncompromising in his goal to tell an array of black stories, for black kids. Although already an established writer, Derrick's breakthrough picture book, "Crown: An Ode to the Fresh Cut" brought him national attention and accolades such as the Ezra Jack Keats Book Award, a Newbery Honor, and the Coretta Scott King Award. More recently he earned a National Book Award honor for the graphic novel “Victory Stand! Raising My Fist for Justice.” In this episode, Derrick tells the story of how music inspired him to write, how his idols taught him to never compromise his voice as a black man, and why he considers himself a freedom fighter. ***Connect with Jordan and The Reading Culture @thereadingculturepod and subscribe to our newsletter at thereadingculturepod.com/newsletter. ***In Derrick's reading challenge, "Resistance and Resilience" he invited us to read powerful stories of resilience from America's black history. You can find her list and all past reading challenges at thereadingculturepod.com.Today's Beanstack Featured Librarian is Connie Sharp, a Librarian Training and Development Specialist at Metro Nashville Public Schools.
