HOW MANY CHANCES DO YOU GIVE AN ADDICT? The Montyman and Roger delve into the complex issue of how many chances to give to individuals struggling with addiction. They explore personal experiences, social media responses, and the balance between support and enabling. The conversation emphasizes the importance of setting boundaries while maintaining hope for recovery, and the distinction between addiction as a medical condition versus a moral failing. The discussion highlights the challenges faced by both the individual struggling with addiction and their loved ones, advocating for a compassionate yet firm approach to recovery. And that was from the time they walked in the door to the time they walked out. So the actual mobility part of it may have only been 10 minutes. I think we took the time to break down a lot of those perceptions of  I'm not qualified to do this. This is going to take too much time. I'm not sure what level the patient is supposed to be mobilizing at. And broke it down. And when they saw that the units started using it over and over again.” Emelia 36:26 “For those who are trying to get this started and you, and you're not sure and you're doing your needs assessment, the biggest thing you could do to help your nursing colleagues, to help the therapy department, to help the hospital is that there has to be some type of standard assessment of how we look at patient mobility. If that is not there, that is a good starting point because you have to speak the same language.” Rapid Responses: What's the last book you read? Welcome to Season 4, Episode 111 of Winning Isn't Easy.  In this episode, we'll dive into the complicated topic of "Migraine." Host Nancy L. Cavey, a seasoned attorney with extensive experience in disability claims, discusses chronic headache and migraine claims. While commonplace, headaches and migraines can be severe enough to be disabling. Disability carriers will fight tooth and nail to prevent policyholders with migraines from receiving disability benefits. Because migraines are often subjective in terms of pain level and severity, can wax and wane regarding flare-ups, and do not often have objective diagnoses, carriers love to claim that they are not disabling. In this episode of Winning Isn't Easy, host Nancy L. Cavey walks through all the information you need to know regarding a migraine disability claim, and how to fight against these preconceived notions. In this episode, we'll cover the following topics:1 - Migraine 1012 - Court Rejects Met Life's Demand That Policyholder with Chronic Headaches Produce Objective Evidence of Disability 3 - Migraine Long-Term Disability Insurance Claims and the Subjective Medical Evidence TrapWhether you're a claimant, or simply seeking valuable insights into the disability claims landscape, this episode provides essential guidance to help you succeed in your journey. https://talkinganimals.net/2023/10/pete-walsh-platypus-partisan/feed/ 0 10388 Pete Walsh–who lives in Tasmania, where he found himself becoming deeply concerned about the plight of local platypuses in the capital city of Hobart, part of narrative that unfolds in “The Platypus Guardian,” a documentary kicking off the new season of the PBS series “Nature”—describes his background before becoming a platypus partisan. In doing so, he recounts his formative years, living amidst assorted animals, an important and impactful experience that he re-created when raising his own kids. Clearly a serious and accomplished photographer, Walsh explains that one outlet for his photos is the entity he created (https://hobartrivuletplatypus.org/) to raise awareness of, and help protect, his beloved local platypuses. He seeks to describe the platypus, a singular animal found only in Australia, and one that appears to have been designed by a committee that had considerable trouble agreeing on key characteristics—for starters, it's a mammal that lays eggs, a furry-coated critter with a duck bill. After touching on the medical condition that's not an insignificant facet of the film—in that it seems to serve as a catalyst for Walsh spending more time at the body of water (“rivulet”), where he first sees the female platypus that becomes his friend. He named that platypus Zoom, and spends a portion of our conversation tracing the unfolding friendship with her, which he chiefly attributes to the animal's curiosity, but may well go beyond that, given that she continued to approach him, like she was indeed visiting a friend. We touch on a number of other subjects—while striving to avoid spoilers, with the U.S. premiere “The Platypus Guardian” not offered until the Oct. 18 showing on “Nature”—including how Walsh, a soft-spoken fellow, transformed into a vocal activist and public speaker, guiding efforts to clean up the trash in the waterway, pieces of which can imperil the platypus by wrapping around their bills. In closing, we addressed Walsh's observation that concluded the film: “I thought I was looking after nature, but, really, it was nature looking after me.” [Photos: Pete Walsh by Wildbear Entertainment…Close-up of platypus by Pete Walsh…Platypus in front of waterfall by Daniel Van Duinkerken…Walsh joined by platypus friend by Wildbear Entertainment] (https://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/, https://www.facebook.com/PBSNature, https://www.instagram.com/pbsnature) ALSO: I spoke briefly with Sherry Silk, CEO of the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, seeking her perspective and analysis of this monumental controversy involving the SPCA Tampa Bay. This announced alliance has generated outrage from a growing number of local and national animal welfare organizations–including calls for Boden's ouster—while local and national media outlets have flocked toward covering the story. This is a raw and personal solo episode of the Female Athlete Nutrition podcast, as I share what's really been going on the last 2 months. I open up about giving birth to my second son, Levi, and the heartbreak and anxiety that quickly followed. Baby Levi and I spent two and a half weeks in hospital before we were able to return home. From his birth, Levi fought for his life with a collapsed lung and undetectable blood sugar. I talk about some of the challenges we faced that first week and the realization that something was seriously wrong with Levi, something that didn't have a quick fix or recovery timeline. Levi was diagnosed with a rare metabolic disorder, glycogen storage disease, impairing his ability to control his blood sugar. Since returning home, this means my husband and I are responsible for tube feeding him and very closely monitoring his blood sugar: at any moment Levi's blood sugar could crash and result in a medical emergency. I discuss what home life looks like for us with a critically newborn, how it has impacted our future plans to relocate to Japan, my business Rise Up Nutrition, and the emotional toll it has had. As well as sharing the challenges we've faced since Levi's birth, I touch on some of the positives and blessings Levi has brought us. I talk about tube feeding a newborn, working with a team of medical professionals to find answers, and what the future might hold. I emphasize my gratitude for having the support of family, medical experts, and the whole Rise Up Nutrition team during this tough time. Currently, it is still an incredibly challenging and emotional time for myself and Levi, and while I'm not ready yet to discuss everything, this is a look into the last couple months, and I plan on sharing more soon. Heather Creekmore tackles the issue of food idolatry and how it relates to body image. Idolatry is a tricky topic, and many women who wrestle the body image idol may secretly desire to label food as an idol too. Heather asks listeners to carefully consider several questions in the form of an "idols test" to see where if food is really their idol, or if it's something else. Here are some key topics covered in today's episodes: Introduction to body image idolatry among women Discussion on how women may shift their focus from body image to food as an idol, especially for those with eating disorders Link between food as an idol and the desire to improve one's body Heather Creekmore's suggestion to consider what one cannot live without beyond physiological needs The potential confusion around food being on the idol list Discussion on fear around food and the topic of gluttony Heather Creekmore's personal experience with disordered eating and society's influence on food habits Fear of losing something being an indicator of an idol Determining the difference between physiological need and food idolatry Lack of understanding about the physiological effects of restriction and disordered eating Idea that finding satisfaction in food is not bad, but ultimate satisfaction cannot be found in it Discussion on spending a lot of time thinking about food and potential physiological connection. Hearing that your child has a medical diagnosis throws a new kind of stress and strain into the parenting arena. Whether the diagnosis is transient or severe, increased parental anxiety is a common issue that presents many twists and turns. Today's guest shares a pediatrician's perspective on supporting parents' mental health through this process. Join us to learn more! Dr. Kelly Fradin is a pediatrician and the author of Advanced Parenting: Helping Kids Through Diagnoses, Differences, and Mental Health Challenges. She is a mother of two and a child advocate based in New York City.  Currently the Director of Pediatrics at the Atria Institute, she was inspired to become a doctor because of her experience of surviving childhood cancer. She is a graduate of Harvard College and Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, and she has dedicated her career to caring for children with complex medical conditions, using her skills in academic clinics, private practice, inpatient units, and schools. In addition to sharing information from her new book, Dr. Fradin shares realistic and powerful parenting advice and children's health information on her Instagram account: @adviceigivemyfriends.  Show Highlights: How Dr. Kelly's childhood cancer journey opened her eyes to the mental health needs of parents Why we should normalize and talk about the challenges that come with new parenthood–and anticipate that trying times will come Why it is important to have an honest relationship with your doctor and your child's doctor How feeding challenges come up for a new baby as a very common issue and diagnosis How a child's diagnosis can lead to excessive worry, anxiety, and intrusive thoughts How a more serious diagnosis and a larger medical care team lead to a more complex responsibility and anxiety Why parents should NOT try to “do it all” themselves but should accept help and delegate responsibilities to others How a NICU experience can impact parents' mental health (While in the NICU, don't be afraid to ask for what you need!) What the reality is in coping with a diagnosis and the stigma that follows in the “what's next?” phase Why it helps fight feelings of isolation to be open with your circle of family and friends Why it's OK to give yourself permission to feel anger in addition to frustration and sadness How a couple may experience their child's diagnosis in very different ways  What Dr. Fradin's book shares about information and coping strategies for parents Resources: Connect with Dr. Kelly Fradin: Website, Instagram, and Book Visit www.postpartum.net for resources! Kellie and Mel recently interviewed the President-Elect of the Obesity Medicine Association, Dr. Lydia Alexander, to discuss obesity and the work she does to bring awareness to the disease. This is the second half of their discussion. Please visit episode 199 if you want to listen to the first half. Dr. Alexander, Kellie, & Mel take a deep dive into the newest GLP-1, and GIP hormones that have recently come to the forefront of obesity treatments. Although, as of this podcast, only one GLP-1 has been FDA-approved for obesity, several are being fast-tracked, and we hope to see those approved by the end of 2023. She explains how the hormones work to balance all our internal systems, how they are studied and approved for use, and what the long-term effects may be. They also discuss what Obesity Medicine Association (OMA) does to help bring awareness, educate, and advocate for obesity. They talk about insurance coverage for obesity treatments versus the subsequent illness that steam from obesity. She is working towards treating the roots of the disease rather than the fruits. It's a fascinating, enlightening, and extremely informative conversation that you will want to listen to more than once! Dr. Lydia C. Alexander practices obesity medicine as the Cheif Medical Officer at Enara Health. She is a fellow and diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine.
