Episode 456 Brian Boucher is an art writer, journalist and critic living in New York, with bylines at publications including the New York Times, New York Magazine, Artnet News, ARTnews, and many others. He previously served as a staff writer and editor at Art in America and a staff writer at Artnet News. He writes about crazy artists' projects (such as when Darren Bader offered his practice for sale), reports on the art market, covers developments in the art education field, and often reports on places where the art world and the wider world intersect, such as the potential cultural impact of the second Trump presidency and how Syrian artists and other cultural figures are looking ahead to a post-Assad era. Here, he looks back on some of the shows, events and artworks that moved him in 2024, some of which he wrote about, including Bruce Nauman's current show at Sperone Westwater, Marlon Mullen's current show at MoMA, Guillaume Guillon Lethiere's recent show at the Clark Art Institute, now at the Louvre, Christopher Wool's recent self-organized show at a disused Lower Manhattan office space, the collective MSCHF's piece “Met's Sink of Theseus" in their recent Perrotin show, and some he didn't write about, like the Maurice Sendak exhibition now at the Denver Art Museum and the Siena exhibition now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He also talked about some of the live music that turned his crank in 2024, including Soul Coughing, Tigue, and the Jesus Lizard, and looks ahead to the farewell tour of the legendary British punk band Gang of Four.

A steamy one today with high temps near 90°!!!!!!! We recapped last night's beatdown of the Brewers, and took a look ahead to week 2 in the NFL which kicks off tonight with Bills/Dolphins. Check out this corn maze in Indiana made to look like Caitlin Clark! Great story about a bunch of students who bought the custodian at their school a brand new car! And apparently, the younger generation is switching back to flip-phones because they're too stressed out by their smartphones. Brian found out that Soul Coughing is going to be at the Palace Theater on the 24th, but the VIP tickets are sold out and the GA tickets are all on the secondary market already. We talked about Reggie Bush almost getting robbed recently, and we talked about a guy in Spain who is a professional "Wedding Destroyer" Can't go wrong with an ice-cold chocolate milkshake today with the heat…not to mention it's "National Chocolate Milkshake Day"! Did you see former NHL goalie, Roberto Luongo, filling in for a beer-league hockey team recently? Dude! How cool would that be??? Went over a list of some of the common sleep mistakes we make...and during today's "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a cruise ship that hit an iceberg, a teen that got shot in the face, a training dummy that was mistaken for a drowning victim, a naked woman who took a shower & a bath in a couple's home, a guy who tried to keep his car from being repossessed, someone keeps peeing in Dollar Tree candles, and a guy who had penile ossification. It was two years into a vicious cycle of depression and Mike Doughty was falling apart. He was taking more Ambien than he had been prescribed, importing huge boxes of the stuff from India, waking up to find packs of cigarettes, candy wrappers, and pizza boxes with no memory of leaving his Memphis home to make such purchases. He was convinced something was deeply wrong with his heart even though every doctor said there wasn't. Finally, he checked into an in-patient facility that turned out to be wonderful and productive. Then he checked out. Then Mike, a recovering addict, started drinking heavily and smoking weed. Then he checked back in again. Mike Doughty is showing improvement now and talks about his treatment, his recovery, and touring again with his band Soul Coughing again 24 years after a bitter breakup.Thank you to all our listeners who support the show as monthly members of Maximum Fun.Check out our I'm Glad You're Here and Depresh Mode merchandise at the brand new merch website MaxFunStore.com!Hey, remember, you're part of Depresh Mode and we want to hear what you want to hear about. ED NOTE: This is from 2021, before this was a podcast and I was posting the video interviews to YouTube. I've taken the audio from that interview and turned it into podcast form. As you can tell at the beginning, we did this in the middle of the pandemic, hence our discussion about the creative process during COVID.Mike Doughty believes that discipline is a necessary part of the songwriting process. Doughty made his name as the founder of Soul Coughing, but he's had a prolific career as a solo singer/songwriter. “I believe in discipline and the idea of working every day. I do like to look back at the end of the day with a sense of accomplishment.” That feeling of accomplishment comes after some consistent journaling each morning and evening. It's decidedly vintage: he uses an IBM Electric typewriter in the morning (“The blank white page is filled with light and hope) and a 1983 Apple IIe computer at night (“The glowing green has a definite night vibe.”). And he saves those evening journal entries on a five inch floppy disk.

We fix our gaze upon another of the legendary record labels of the O3L era, Slash Records. Slash was formed in Los Angeles in 1978 by the late Bob Biggs. Over the course of its 22 year run as an active label, Slash released slew of classics by the likes of The Germs, X, Violent Femmes, Fear, The Blasters, Los Lobos, Rank and File, The Del Fuegos, The Gun Club, Dream Syndicate, Misfits, Robyn Hitchcock, Burning Spear, BoDeans, Faith No More, Failure, Green On Red, Grant Lee Buffalo, L7, The Chills, Rammstein, Soul Coughing, The Verlaines, and more. Boasting such an eclectic and iconic roster, how are we possibly going to pick our Top 5 songs from the label? We'd better call in the reinforcement! Yes, this week's Third Lad is rockin' Chicagoland indie-pop singer/songwriter/guitarist Dolph Chaney, and you'll be seeing his "mug" all over in the near future, because his new album is pretty dang special. It's full of memorable melodies, indelible hooks, witty, intelligent lyrics, and playful production. Mug continues Dolph's evolution from '90s lo-fi troubadour to widescreen guitar pop auteur. Ghost of Vroom - "Still Getting It Done" from the 2023 album Ghost of Vroom 3 on Mod y Vi Ghost of Vroom — a project of former Soul Coughing-frontman Mike Doughty and his longtime collaborator Andrew “Scrap” Livingston — return with Ghost of Vroom 3, out September 1st via Mod y Vi Records. The LP was produced and mixed by Beastie Boys collaborator Mario Caldado, Jr., who worked with the duo on previous releases. “It's a dream, and a groove, and its language is an object,” writes author Rick Moody in an essay accompanying the album, “one that leads beyond where Doughty started, into a life of greater improvisation, the aleatory, the migratory, the dilatory, hand signals, dropping in and dropping out the kid goes for broke, and here makes one of the great records of his life, a thing of its time, a thing of another time, a thing that makes dreams out of time, and a thing of great beauty, and, let it be said, acceleration, here it is the third of three, like hypothesis, antithesis, synthesis, GHOST OF VROOM 3.” Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tonight we welcome a guy to take over the playlist who has truly been making his own way both in style and substance in the music world while maintaining his secret identity via encrypted Scooby Doo mask. His meld of heavy beats, lo-fi, and indie rock stylings have gained great attention from some important names over the past several months, and he lined up a great playlist of influences and songs he's personally worked on in the studio. Winter got you down? Mel, Mike and Keith have just the thing to get you thinking about those summer days. They are sharing their favorite beach vibe songs. Those songs that make you want to grab some cold beers, a beach chair and find a spot to spend the day gazing at the ocean. They start with a classic song and throw in some Soft Serve (not the ice cream) and a cover of a summer romance song by Within Temptation. Keith has the genre bender and his choice will definitely bring that beach time happiness. Don't forget to check out their Instagram page for a sneak peek of all the songs.
