"Faith Under Fire" When people of faith look at the realities of abuse, violence, addictions and so many more social issues, a lot of the analysis describes these as the culture's "problems". Craig DeRoche told a New York pro-family, pro-faith conference -- and now tells Family Life listeners -- that the vocabulary and perspective on "problems" and "solutions" need to change...if we are to bring a resolution and hope to all these circumstances around us. DeRoche is the president of the Family Policy Alliance. He says we need to reverse the terms "problems" and "solutions". The troubles around us are less about problems to be solved, but can be better understood as inadequate and unhelpful solutions to the deeper problems people have. As a follower of Christ, he says lives of faith and discipleship are the only solutions that work. He tells his first-person story about how Jesus resolved his own inner problems, and thereby his marriage, family and vocation became better than they ever were before. DeRoche, in his own work with the national organization, also advocates for this understanding of problems and solutions as he advocates for public policy in his interactions with lawmakers. He calls on people who have discovered the True Solution to be active in their households, local communities, regional and statewide groups, and other ways of faith-sharing and solution-solving. The Family Policy Alliance has partnerships with organizations in 40 states, including New York and Pennsylvania. Craig DeRoche also spoke at the 2023 Legislative Day in Albany. He hosts a weekly podcast on with stories on culture and faith.

We've been getting some heat lately from people who love methadone and suboxone. What can we say? We want you to live a drug free life, not dependent on any addictive substance - and yes, methadone and suboxone are addictive. We hope that you will live a drug free life and if you disagree with that - oh well. Why would we want anything less for you? We know it's possible, so that's what we wish for you. And if you have gotten sober on a 12 step program - like our recent interviewee, Craig DeRoche - that's fantastic.
Craig DeRoche was the youngest Speaker of the House in the state of Michigan. When his alcohol addiction became public and out of control, his life totally fell apart. Now fully recovered, he has his life and family back and is making huge strides in helping people with addiction and in the criminal justice system. This is Craig's story.
Highly Functional: Addiction, Recovery, Prison Fellowship with Craig DerocheCRAIG DEROCHESenior Vice President, Advocacy & Public PolicyCraig DeRoche joined Prison Fellowship several years ago as the director of external affairs for the organization’s advocacy arm, Justice Fellowship. Today, DeRoche leads Prison Fellowship’s criminal justice reform efforts.DeRoche was first introduced to Prison Fellowship while speaking at a national forum on addiction in 2011. He was the youngest statewide Republican leader in the country and was elected Michigan Speaker of the House, but in 2010, after serving a full tenure in the state legislature, DeRoche made national headlines with two alcohol-related arrests. It was only after his arrests, rehabilitation, and a renewed focus on his Christian faith that DeRoche escaped from his life-long struggle with alcoholism. He has been sober since 2010.DeRoche’s first book,Highly Functional, released in May 2015, is a memoir of his life transitioning from addiction to recovery. DeRoche frequently pens op-eds for publications such asThe New York Times, The Washington Times, and The Christian Post.https://www.prisonfellowship.org/resources/justice-reform-resources/http://craigderoche.com/media-kit/
Are we putting too many people in jail for too long? Craig DeRoche with Prison Fellowship shares PF’s passion for restorative justice, and why over 100 Evangelical Leaders just signed the Justice Declaration. www.prisonfellowship.org
Since assuming office, Attorney General Jeff Sessions has shown little interest in expanding the efforts of his predecessors in curbing policies that criminal justice reform advocates blame for America’s high rates of mass incarceration. Instead, he’s doubled down, recently instructing federal prosecutors to pursue the harshest penalties for drug dealers and gun violence offenders. (Read his memo.) Sessions’ intentions are discouraging news for those who have long pressed for reform, a group which includes Chuck Colson’s Prison Fellowship. They also present an opportunity for Christians to speak into America’s anti-drug policy, one of the “biggest catastrophic failures in American history, says Craig DeRoche, Prison Fellowship’s senior vice president of advocacy and public policy. Christians ought to get “involved because our values are are at stake and a lot of human lives that God cares about...are at stake,” said DeRoche. “This is an invitation for Christians to engage.” DeRoche joined assistant editor Morgan Lee and editorial director Ted Olsen to discuss the good intentions behind mandatory minimums, what the Old Testament has to say to our current legal climate, and how Prison Fellowship ended up partnering with the NAACP and ACLU to support previously incarcerated people.
April is almost over, but it’s not too late to talk about Second Chance Month. Even a body as divided as the US Senate unanimously declared April as Second Chance Month, a month to focus on ways to help people pick up their lives again after a period of incarceration. This week we will talk to Craig DeRoche, Senior Vice President for Advocacy and Public Policy for Prison Fellowship. Prison Fellowship is promoting April as Second Chance Month, and Craig will talk to us about his organization, the legacy of its founder Chuck Colson, and how the United States can solve its mass incarceration problem.
