Susan Pendergrass speaks with Tim DeRoche from Available to All about the importance of open enrollment in public schools, particularly in Missouri, where strict residential assignment policies limit access to quality education. They discuss the issue of educational redlining, the impact of district boundaries, and the need for policy changes to ensure equitable access for all families. DeRoche highlights transportation challenges, funding models, and successful open enrollment policies in other states that Missouri could learn from.
Welcome back to The Trip Report Podcast, a production of Beckley Waves, a Psychedelic Venture Studio.Today, I am speaking with Brandon Deroche, founder of the PORTAL—the Partnership of Responsible Trippers Advocating Legalization. PORTAL is a project from Propeller, the social impact and advocacy organization Brandon started more than 15 years ago to drive awareness and action for social movements. I was intrigued when I first learned about Propeller–and their methodology for advocacy and advancing causes.Propeller collaborates with big-name artists and musicians to leverage their platforms to raise awareness and inspire action. With PORTAL, Brandon and his team are taking this approach to advancing the psychedelic cause.I wanted to speak with Brandon because I love a good acronym, and PORTAL may be the best I've ever heard—and because I wanted to learn more about how social movements form and grow.In this episode, we discuss:* Brandon's experience working with some of the biggest celebrities in the world, like Justin Bieber, Lizzo, and Brian Cranston* His experience working with the spiritual teacher Ram Dass* The cultural adoption and destigmatization of psychedelics through artists with massive audiences—like Dua Lipa, Post Malone, and Zach Bryan* Leveraging these voices for psychedelic education, harm reduction, and best practices* The eventual political polarization of social movements* And much moreAnd now, I bring you my conversation with Brand Deroche.Listen to the episode on Substack, Spotify, Google or Apple.Credits:* Hosted by Zach Haigney * Produced by Zach Haigney, Erin Greenhouse, and Katelin Jabbari* Find us at thetripreport.com* Follow us on Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube* Theme music by MANCHO Sounds, Mixed and Mastered by Rollin Weary This is a public episode. "Faith Under Fire" When people of faith look at the realities of abuse, violence, addictions and so many more social issues, a lot of the analysis describes these as the culture's "problems". Craig DeRoche told a New York pro-family, pro-faith conference -- and now tells Family Life listeners -- that the vocabulary and perspective on "problems" and "solutions" need to change...if we are to bring a resolution and hope to all these circumstances around us. DeRoche is the president of the Family Policy Alliance. He says we need to reverse the terms "problems" and "solutions". The troubles around us are less about problems to be solved, but can be better understood as inadequate and unhelpful solutions to the deeper problems people have. As a follower of Christ, he says lives of faith and discipleship are the only solutions that work. He tells his first-person story about how Jesus resolved his own inner problems, and thereby his marriage, family and vocation became better than they ever were before. DeRoche, in his own work with the national organization, also advocates for this understanding of problems and solutions as he advocates for public policy in his interactions with lawmakers. He calls on people who have discovered the True Solution to be active in their households, local communities, regional and statewide groups, and other ways of faith-sharing and solution-solving. The Family Policy Alliance has partnerships with organizations in 40 states, including New York and Pennsylvania. Craig DeRoche also spoke at the 2023 Legislative Day in Albany. He hosts a weekly podcast on with stories on culture and faith.

Tom Fox's guest on this week's show is Toby DeRoche, a professional auditor and Senior Manager of Risk Management at Verizon. He and Tom talk about the importance of risk assessment and how it has changed in recent years. Agile Audit Agile Audit is simply auditing the things that matter at the current moment. It's an iterative approach, going through the entire audit lifecycle and compressing it down to the essentials. "We're saying, so here's everything that I could audit, but here's what's most important to the organization today," Toby tells Tom. "It's this continual cycle… giving you the answers to what's the most burning question you have related to risk and control in your organization today.” Focus on The Highest Risk If an audit plan isn't focused on relevant issues, or the highest risk, no one is going to care how well the auditing plan was executed. Focusing on low-risk issues wastes everyone's time. "We should be focusing on the things that are the highest risk and only those things," Toby says. If internal auditors aren't focused on management support, strategic objectives, and challenges, then they aren't doing their jobs. Communicating Vs Reporting Tom asks Toby to differentiate between communicating and reporting results as an internal auditor. Giving reports is not communication, he responds; it's just regurgitating facts. "A much more effective way of getting the information across is to make it more digestible," Toby remarks, because it's much more impactful, and people can more easily grasp what you're trying to say. Looking Ahead Companies in the future will have no choice but to use the concepts of risk assessment, continuous improvement, and continuous risk assessment. Auditing must be part of the company's objectives. "Anything that we're doing that's not focused on what matters to management and the highest risk to them achieving their goals right now, then we're completely missing the picture," Toby stresses. In this episode, I spoke with Toby DeRoche, author of the book Only Audit What Matters. Toby shared how internal auditors can start BEING agile vs. only doing agile and also shared the most important step in the Agile Blueprint transformation. Can you guess what it was? Colorado is the first state to announce that it will accept bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as payment for taxes. COLORADO SPRINGS, CO — According to Digiconomist, the carbon footprint of a single bitcoin transaction, which can take several minutes to complete, is equivalent to the power consumption of an average US household for 77 days. That same transaction is worth more than 2.7 million visa card transactions or 200,000 hours of YouTube viewing. Bitcoin has a carbon footprint of 114 megatons per year, equivalent to the Czech Republic, and consumes the same 200 terawatt-hours of power as Thailand, a country of nearly 70 million people. Regardless, bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are on the verge of becoming mainstream in Colorado. Gov. Jared Polis announced on Feb. 25 that Colorado will be the first state in the country to accept cryptocurrency for tax payments, raising the question of what further cryptocurrency expansion might mean for the environment. An executive order signed by President Joe Biden on Wednesday calling for a more thorough examination of cryptocurrencies also seeks to reduce cryptocurrency's environmental impact, indicating that the technology has a bright future. Cryptocurrency, for those who have successfully avoided that side of the internet, is a type of digital money that is represented by computer code and uses encryption technology to ensure its security. The blockchain, an unavoidable term when discussing cryptocurrency, is a digital ledger that records cryptocurrency transactions. When it comes to bitcoin, the most popular cryptocurrency, "miners" compete every 10 minutes to solve a complex mathematical puzzle for the right to add blocks of transactions to the ledger. The fastest puzzle solvers are currently rewarded with 6.25 newly created bitcoins, which is equivalent to $245,000. According to Mandy DeRoche, an attorney with EarthJustice, the rise in popularity of cryptocurrency has resulted in a noticeable increase in energy use and fossil fuel consumption, resulting in higher carbon emissions across the country. "What we've seen in New York over the last few years is that fossil-fueled power plants that were not operating or were only operating on a limited basis are coming back online," DeRoche said. "They're now on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week." According to DeRoche, coal waste plants in Pennsylvania are ramping up operations, and coal waste plants in Montana have reopened. "Those are emissions that are destroying the planet," DeRoche said. "There are crypto miners who use renewable energy in part; I'm not aware of any who use it entirely because solar doesn't run 24 hours a day. The economic incentive here is to always be mining." As with homes, cars, and other infrastructure, "there aren't enough renewables in the United States yet" to power cryptocurrency mining operations sustainably, according to DeRoche. "Adding another massive load, such as proof-of-work cryptocurrency mining, will completely destabilise everything." Bitcoin and ether, the two most important cryptocurrencies, which account for roughly 60% of the sector's market cap, use Proof of Work algorithms. These models are largely responsible for cryptocurrency's substantial carbon footprint and energy consumption. Cryptocurrency transactions and businesses use one of two models: Proof of Work or Proof of Stake. Miners compete to solve a mathematical puzzle in Proof of Work. Thieves are discouraged from attempting to sabotage or hijack the blockchain because doing so would necessitate them spending more time, energy, and money than at least 51% of other miners. Proof of Stake is a newer, more energy-efficient algorithm in which miners stake digital coins in exchange for the opportunity to validate blockchain transactions. They lose the coins they've invested if they don't verify transactions accurately. While some critics believe Proof of Work is obsolete, bitcoin supporters believe Proof of Stake is more centralised and less secure. One of those critics is Jeremy Epstein. He works as an investor relations officer for Open Forest Protocol, a startup that hopes to use cryptocurrency and blockchain technology to create carbon offset markets by registering land plots and forestation projects on the blockchain for verification and trading. "In the last five years, no cryptocurrency project has used a proof of work model. It is a model that is no longer in use "Patch spoke with Epstein. "Being bitcoin, it will almost certainly remain a proof-of-work protocol in perpetuity, and bitcoin mining is almost certainly the single largest contributor to crypto-based emissions." Bitcoin emissions, according to Epstein, will eventually decrease. Ninety percent of bitcoin has already been mined, but because mining becomes more difficult over time, the last bitcoin will not be mined until around 2140, according to Reuters, though determining when the last bitcoin might be mined is not exactly a straightforward equation. According to Epstein, future increases in processing power for mining and the number of miners may work against the increasing complexity of mining over time. "Bitcoin has a limited number of tokens — we know there are 21 million bitcoins in existence at any given time; no more can be created," Epstein explained. "And then transactions are still verified using Proof of Work, but I believe that overall, bitcoin emissions should fall." The Proof of Work model was also used by Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency. However, the company is currently planning to transition its ether token to Proof of Stake. According to Epstein, the switch will reduce Ethereum's energy consumption and carbon footprint significantly. "I believe it will reduce its energy consumption by roughly 99 percent when it does that," Epstein said. "The date for which Ethereum 2.0 is supposed to occur — I believe that has been pushed back a few times, as switching a network to a completely new system is not a small task — but that should occur within the next two years. "And when that happens, Ethereum will go from a total energy consumption [equivalent to] 800,000 US households to around 427 US households — it reduces its emissions per transaction by 99 percent." According to Epstein, the biggest environmental impact of cryptocurrency is in Proof of Work protocols. He claims that competitors to bitcoin and Ethereum, dubbed 'alt-coins,' are now on the rise "Proof of Stake is becoming more popular, and all of these are based on it. "The industry changed in a blink of an eye. Simply put, proof of stake is more effective. Again, it's been five years since anyone has built anything significant on a proof of work platform." Apart from the prospect of a growing market for less-impactful cryptocurrencies, Epstein believes that "there's a very good chance the crypto industry supports climate solutions that end up achieving massively beneficial results for the climate, and those beneficial results far outweigh any negative effects that crypto has on the environment over time." According to Epstein, cryptocurrency has recently transferred approximately 80% of the world's carbon credits to blockchain technology. A carbon credit is essentially a permit that entitles its holder to a certain amount of glasshouse gas emissions. "What this does is it removes poor quality offsets from the market so that corporate emitters can't claim net-zero by buying the most poor quality carbon offsets available; it raises the floor so that they have to buy carbon offsets at a higher price, which drives corporate entities to reduce their emissions more deeply before going and purchasing offsets," Epstein explained. "They delve deeper into their manufacturing processes and the carbon market. So this is having real-world consequences, but I believe we are only scratching the surface right now." Colorado's decision to accept cryptocurrency payments for taxes is yet another step towards further normalising the technology, which could eventually lead to more environmental and fiscal regulation for cryptocurrencies. "Crypto acceptance in Colorado is just another small domino in an unstoppable wave of crypto eating the world," Epstein said. "When it comes to who is using cryptocurrency now, the adoption curves are essentially analogous to internet adoption in 1998. And it almost exactly follows the internet's adoption curve. Consider what the internet has done for us; this is the new internet, and it should continue to march forwards to the point where everyone is accessing goods and services using blockchain technology, and they may or may not even realise it, and that is the most important thing." In 2011, Ryan had a mountain bike accident in Girona, Spain while working with Trek Tavel. He injured his spine at the C4 vertebrae. When he returned to the United States after doing his acute rehab in Barcelona, Spain, he was med-flighted back to the USA where he spent invaluable time in the Inpatient Rehab at Spaulding in Boston. He attended Empower Spinal Cord Injury (Empower SCI) in 2012 and 2013 where he learned how to be more independent and to get out of his comfort zone. In 2015 he co-founded an annual fundraiser called Knobby Tire Ride and Roll to benefit Empower SCI which brings his love of mountain biking back to the disabled community while raising nearly 40,000USD to date for the organization. Because of Ryan's exposure to the amazing peer mentors while at Spaulding and Empower SCI, he became a mentor with the Great Boston Chapter of the United Spinal Association (GBC) in 2014. Three years later he became a board member and has put his experience in logistics, event planning, and management to good use in various chapter committees. He also took on the role of Digital Media Coordinator in 2018. Most of the advice and knowledge people present about #internalaudit is very theoretical. If you are like most auditors you are still asking "But how do I implement at my organization?" In this #jammingwithjason #internalaudit podcast "Making Internal Audit Practical" I talk with Toby DeRoch of InsightCPE on how we can become much more practical and just do things instead of talking about it. Two areas we dig into deeper are how to practically apply an Agile Auditing approach, and how to deal with a virtual audit environment, including how to develop relationships remotely. Listen in at: http://www.jasonmefford.com/jammingwithjason/
We've been talking about agile auditing for years, so why are a few succeeding and others are reluctant to embrace it or failing in their implementation? Agile doesn't mean faster, and it doesn't apply to just one part of the audit process. It is a paradigm shift and one of the most important changes to #internalaudit in many years. I am talking with Toby DeRoche, who has spent the last several years understanding exactly how to apply the principles of agile into the whole audit process in a practical way. What works, what doesn't, what organizations are really doing that are successful, and is here to share so you can make the shift to agile auditing and avoid the painful learning curve. Laurie & Matt conduct their first interview for this episode, bringing in an expert to help answer the question, "How Can Teachers Manage Time Better?" That expert is Serena Pariser, a rock star educator and author of two books for teachers, the most recent of which is called Real Talk About Time Management: 35 Best Practices for Educators, which she co-authored with Edward F. DeRoche. On her first book, Real Talk About Classroom Management, 50 Best Practices That Work and Show You Believe in Your Students, she was the sole author. In a strange era when time has seemingly distorted, and veteran teachers are experiencing an anxiety they haven't felt since their first year in the classroom, Serena translates time management techniques and tips for the online, distance-learning environment most teachers will be facing when school resumes in he fall. The interview follows the structure of the book, with Serena first addressing how to adopt a "Time Management Mindset." The conversation then moves onto time management strategies for "Planning," "At School, " and "At Home." Please take a moment to subscribe and leave a review! Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.05.04.076588v1?rss=1 Authors: Zhang, Y., LEHMANN, A., DEROCHE, M. Abstract: Recent research has demonstrated that pupillometry is a robust measure for quantifying listening effort. However, pupillary responses in listening situations where multiple cognitive functions are engaged and sustained over a period of time remain hard to interpret. This limits our conceptualisation and understanding of listening effort in realistic situations, because rarely in everyday life are people challenged by one task at a time. Therefore, the purpose of this experiment was to reveal the dynamics of listening effort in a sustained listening condition using a word repeat and recall task. Words were presented in quiet and speech-shaped noise at different signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). Participants were presented with lists of 10 words, and required to repeat each word after its presentation. At the end of the list, participants either recalled as many words as possible or moved on to the next list. Simultaneously, their pupil dilation was recorded throughout the whole experiment. When only word repeating was required, peak pupil dilation (PPD) was bigger in 0dB versus other conditions; whereas when recall was required, PPD showed no difference among SNR levels and PPD in 0dB was smaller than repeat-only condition. Baseline pupil diameter and PPD followed different growth patterns across the 10 serial positions in conditions requiring recall: baseline pupil diameter built up progressively and plateaued in the later positions (but shot up at the onset of recall, i.e. the end of the list); PPD decreased at a pace quicker than in repeat-only condition. The current findings concur with the recent literature in showing that additional cognitive load during a speech intelligibility task could disturb the well-established relation between pupillary response and listening effort. Both the magnitude and temporal pattern of task-evoked pupillary response differ greatly in complex listening conditions, urging for more listening effort studies in complex and realistic listening situations. Several years ago, local Boston resident Ryan DeRoche was in a mountain bike accident that resulted in a severe spinal cord injury and left him with little to no use of his arms and legs. His life changed in an instant. But through Massachusetts-based National Education for Assistance Dog Services (NEADS), Ryan was matched with service dog Oliver, who just completed his training at a Boston-based jail. The two have been inseparable ever since. Oliver is specially trained to help Ryan be independent – assisting him with daily tasks like opening and closing doors and getting things in hard-to-reach places. Emotionally, he also has a way of knowing if Ryan is sad, angry or frustrated, and knows exactly how to cheer up his human buddy with attention and kisses. Oliver changed Ryan’s life, and he couldn’t imagine a life without his furry sidekick. Ryan and Oliver are working with Merck Animal Health and NEADs to highlight the critical role service dogs play and the importance of keeping them healthy. The campaign – called BRAVECTO™ Cares – focuses on the health of service dogs, including protecting them from fleas and ticks, and underscores the importance of keeping family pets protected, as well. Fleas and ticks can carry illnesses, such as Lyme disease, to our pets and our families, and CDC-reported illnesses in humans have tripled in recent years. If service dogs are not at optimal health, they will not be at ideal performance and can potentially put their handler at risk. For more information, you can also visit the website www.protectfromfleasandticks.com.

Our guest today is Tim DeRoche, a McKinsey alum and independent consultant who is also the author of The Ballad of Huck & Miguel, a novel published in February 2018 by Redtail Press. The Ballad of Huck and Miguel is a retelling of Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in which Tim imagines that Huck is alive today and instead of traveling on the Mississippi with an escaped slave, Huck is living in Los Angeles and travels along the Los Angeles River with an undocumented immigrant. It is a fabulous novel with wonderfully inventive language and great fun to read. In this episode, Tim and I discuss how he came to write the novel, and how he combines this creative pursuit with his management consulting practice. Independent consulting provides the career flexibility to pursue a career as an artist in parallel, and Tim’s experience is a great example of that. I hope you enjoy this discussion as much as I did.

We’re all just asking for a little respect. We all have different backgrounds, cultures, income-levels, and experiences. Our co-workers, bosses, and customers all have different ways of seeing the world than we do. Those differences can divide us and make it harder to work together, or they can be a reminder to treat each other with the same respect we want to receive. That’s why cross-cultural sensitivity in the workplace is and always will be important. In this episode, Lisa DeRoche, VP of Human Resources at Brightpoint Health, discusses how promoting cross-cultural sensitivity and respect for both patients and peers leads to a better healthcare experience for everyone.

Contrary to what she'd probably tell you herself, Torre DeRoche is one of the bravest people I know. When we first encountered each other online, she had just finished sailing the world for two years with her boyfriend at the time. Just the two of them . . . on the open seas . . . despite her deathly fear of sharks. I've been captivated by her story and her writing, under the moniker Fearful Adventurer, ever since, and I had the pleasure of meeting her in person for a meal in Chiang Mai when we crossed paths there in 2013. Fast forward a few years after that, and Torre found herself in a deep state of grief and loss. Her dad was dying of cancer, and her relationship of ten years was dissolving because of it. Her new book is the story of finding her way back to life — and this time without the worry that had plagued her since she was a child.

Since assuming office, Attorney General Jeff Sessions has shown little interest in expanding the efforts of his predecessors in curbing policies that criminal justice reform advocates blame for America’s high rates of mass incarceration. Instead, he’s doubled down, recently instructing federal prosecutors to pursue the harshest penalties for drug dealers and gun violence offenders. (Read his memo.) Sessions’ intentions are discouraging news for those who have long pressed for reform, a group which includes Chuck Colson’s Prison Fellowship. They also present an opportunity for Christians to speak into America’s anti-drug policy, one of the “biggest catastrophic failures in American history, says Craig DeRoche, Prison Fellowship’s senior vice president of advocacy and public policy. Christians ought to get “involved because our values are are at stake and a lot of human lives that God cares about...are at stake,” said DeRoche. “This is an invitation for Christians to engage.” DeRoche joined assistant editor Morgan Lee and editorial director Ted Olsen to discuss the good intentions behind mandatory minimums, what the Old Testament has to say to our current legal climate, and how Prison Fellowship ended up partnering with the NAACP and ACLU to support previously incarcerated people.
