Leadership Kryptonite #3: Critical Spirit “‘Scoffer' is the name of the arrogant, haughty man who acts with arrogant pride.” Proverbs 21:24 (ESV) Zero offense intended to all the wonderful Debbys, Nellies, and Carls in our lives. Thankfully, you are not a Negative Nelly, Debby Downer, or Complaining Carl. However, I guarantee you know a few. They go by different names but always seem to work their way into a team. It's known as a critical spirit, and it is a deadly form of leadership kryptonite. At a previous church, we had a member of our team who lived with a critical spirit. He saw everything through a negative lens. He challenged every new idea, doubted every decision, and always expected the worst. Unfortunately, he brought the entire team down. A person with a critical spirit is to a team what water is to a fire. They quench enthusiasm, hinder progress, and create an atmosphere of negativity. To lead effectively, we must recognize and address this destructive attitude. Get The Notes
Derek Dougherty preaches on Jesus' teaching in Luke 6 about how to replace a Critical Spirit with a Charitable Spirit.
This podcast episode discusses the challenge of overcoming a critical spirit, based on a recent sermon on the book of James. Mark & Devin explore how easily people can fall into patterns of criticism and judgment, both within the church and in broader society. Key points covered: 1. The pervasiveness of critical attitudes in modern culture - Constant evaluation and criticism encouraged by consumer culture - Social media and anonymous commenting enabling harsh judgments - Political polarization fueling criticism of opposing views 2. Defining a critical spirit - Putting oneself in a position of superiority over others - Focusing on negative aspects and ignoring positives - Criticizing, condemning, and judging rather than helping 3. The danger of critical spirits within Christian communities - Theological disagreements leading to divisiveness - Judgmental attitudes contradicting Christ's teachings on love and grace - How church hurt can push people away from faith 4. James' teachings on taming the tongue and practicing humility - The power of words to build up or tear down - Importance of watching our speech and avoiding gossip - Humbling ourselves under God's authority rather than judging others 5. Practical ways to overcome a critical spirit - Cultivating self-awareness about our own flaws and need for grace - Addressing issues directly with others instead of talking behind their backs - Seeking to encourage and uplift rather than criticize - Focusing on shared beliefs rather than minor differences 6. The role of church leadership in setting a positive culture - Importance of not tolerating gossip or destructive criticism - Encouraging direct, loving communication to resolve conflicts - Balancing conviction with humility and grace 7. Distinguishing between healthy correction and destructive criticism - The need for strong convictions and biblical truth - Approaching correction with love, humility and genuine concern - Trusting God as the ultimate judge rather than condemning others 8. Forgiveness, reconciliation, and healthy boundaries - Forgiving others while also maintaining appropriate boundaries - Seeking peace and reconciliation when possible - Treating even difficult people with Christ-like love 9. Replacing criticism with God's grace and love - Understanding God's scandalous grace towards us - Extending that same grace and mercy to others - Looking for the good in people, even those we disagree with 10. Practical steps for developing an encouraging spirit - Intentionally looking for ways to compliment and uplift others - Following Christ's example of offering salvation, not condemnation - Cultivating humility and recognizing our own need for grace Mark & Devin emphasize that overcoming a critical spirit requires more than just trying to stop criticism. It involves actively cultivating humility, extending grace, and seeking to encourage others. They challenge listeners to examine their own attitudes and speech patterns, replacing judgment with Christ-like love. By focusing on these themes from James' epistle, the podcast offers practical wisdom for fostering unity, resolving conflicts, and creating a culture of grace within Christian communities. The discussion is particularly timely given the current climate of political polarization and online negativity.
In this sermon on James 4:11-12, we explore the topic "How to Cure a Critical Spirit." The message begins by highlighting our culture's tendency to constantly evaluate and judge everything around us, from restaurants to Uber drivers. This mindset can easily seep into our church life and personal relationships, leading to a critical and judgmental attitude towards others. Mark defines a critical spirit as, "an attitude focused on the negative, coming from a position of superiority, judgment, and condemnation." It's important to note that having strong convictions and biblical understanding is not the same as having a critical spirit. The difference lies in how we approach and treat others who may not share our beliefs or practices. James, the brother of Jesus, addresses this issue after covering various challenging topics in his letter. He recognizes the tendency for readers to become judgmental of others and takes a moment to warn against developing a critical spirit. The sermon outlines three cures for a critical spirit: - Watch your words: We're instructed not to speak evil or slander others. This includes both intentionally spreading lies and thinking the worst about someone without talking to them first. - Humble yourself: We're called to put ourselves under God's Word rather than above it. A humble life is one where we become less, and Jesus becomes more visible. - See God as the judge: We're reminded that God alone is the true judge, and we don't have the right to judge our neighbors. Mark emphasizes that a critical spirit and being filled with the Holy Spirit are incompatible. The fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control) should characterize our interactions with others. Jesus' teaching about the log and the speck (Matthew 7:1-5) is discussed, highlighting our tendency to show more grace to ourselves than to others. The sermon challenges us to recognize the immense grace we've received from God and extend that same grace to those around us. The negative impact of a critical spirit on church communities is addressed. It can lead to disillusionment, undermine the health and vision of the church, and drive people away from faith. The proper way to handle conflicts within the church is outlined, based on Matthew 18:15-17. We're encouraged to speak directly with those who have wronged us rather than gossiping or criticizing them behind their backs. The sermon concludes by reminding us of the gospel message in John 3:16-17. Jesus came not to judge the world but to save it. As followers of Christ, we're called to reflect this same attitude of grace and love towards our neighbors. Listeners are challenged to examine their own hearts and ask, "How critical am I of others?" If we find ourselves being overly critical, we're encouraged to seek God's forgiveness and ask Him to help us see others through His lens of grace and mercy. This thought-provoking message invites us to cultivate a spirit of love and grace in our relationships, both within the church and in our wider communities. By watching our words, humbling ourselves, and recognizing God as the ultimate judge, we can overcome a critical spirit and truly live out the gospel message of love and grace.

The Sermon of the Mount, recorded in Matthew 5-7, is Jesus' first public sermon and longest recorded in the gospels. Jesus' main focuses in these chapters is what we belong to (the Kingdom), who we belong to (the Father), and how we interact with both (love and obedience). It is the constitution of the “upside-down Kingdom”. Here, losing is winning, suffering is joy, and enemies are loved. When people persecute us they get blessed. When there is division and strife, we stand as peacemakers. When we are struck with insults, we refuse to retaliate but instead manifest a crucified lamb. It is a kingdom where our time is not devoted to how much money we can make but how obedient we can be to the Father. It is where the meek inherit the earth not the strong and the politically savvy. In this kingdom, we give, pray and fast in secret and there is no need for anxiety concerning tomorrow. This is the only way of life for the Church and what it looks like to be a disciple of Jesus.

Overcoming A Critical Spirit by
It's so important that we maintain a healthy posture within the family of God because it's ultimately the greatest testimony we'll have as a collective community. Sadly, Christians are often infected with a critical spirit. If the onlooking world sees us carrying a "cancel culture" attitude just like they do, then how are we any different? James says there's no room for this.

"A critical spirit is a ravenous beast that devours many an honest effort, loving gesture, or kind deed with nary a backward glance. Threatening to steal the joy from everything that isn't perfect and everyone who falls short of its expectations. It poisons every relationship it touches, because the pressure of an impossible standard is too heavy to bear. Those in relationship with one who possesses a critical spirit are always trying and always falling short. Eventually they stop trying altogether." – Lori Hatcher, 4 Ways to Cure a Critical SpiritDiscussion Questions:1. What does healthy judging look like?2. How do you work on not being hypercritical?3. What does it mean to remove the plank out of my own eye?4. How can we be better at having a posture of receiving input from others?Prayer Prompt:"Father, I lay down my self-imposed responsibility of judging the heart, motives, intentions, and actions of the people in my life. You have instructed me in this, and I will obey you. I remove the back-breaking burden of being the judge, and I repent of the pride in my life that is evident every time I have a critical, judgmental thought. You have commanded me to walk in forgiveness and love, to rise above offenses, and to walk humbly with you. I choose that road today. I submit my thoughts to you for approval, choosing loving thoughts and not condemning thoughts, compassionate thoughts not critical thoughts. And kindly remove the log in my eye. Thank you."

A Critical Spirit is underestimated as it moves among believers to turn us against one another, and even against the Light itself. When we find ourselves consumed by the desire to criticize, while rarely being an encouragement, we must ask who is leading our discernment.

Join pastors Drew and Tim as they tackle the timely topic of false teachers, delving into scripture, personal experiences, and the difficult task of discernment in a world of mixed messages. In this episode, we discuss how you can:- Enhance your discernment capabilities to detect false teachings and uphold biblical truth.- Overcome toxic criticism and promote unity within your church community.- Strike the perfect balance between love and truth during Bible discussions.- Maintain your focus on Jesus, despite the inevitable distractions that may arise.- Build a faith community through intentional engagement and collective action.Quotes from this episode-"We've got to be aware of false teachers and discern through, pray through, and be really careful about ultimately calling someone a false teacher.""Does a false teaching make someone a false teacher? There are levels to it, and that's what makes it so challenging.""We need to be intentional about keeping our eyes on Jesus through the busyness of life and clutter of our schedules."False TeachersIn recent times, it has become increasingly important to be aware of false teachers and their impact on faith communities. With the rise of social media and easy access to information, it's easier than ever for these individuals to reach and deceive a large audience. False teachers typically promote destructive heresies, denying fundamental truths and leading others astray. However, it is vital not to jump to conclusions and label someone as a false teacher without proper discernment and prayerful consideration. Though false teachers have always existed and will continue to do so, a gentle and balanced approach is essential in addressing and identifying falsehoods. Both hosts agree that small differences in opinion should not cause division or lead to accusations of false teaching. They emphasize the need for a careful examination of a person's teachings and alignment with Scripture before making any judgments.
