Daniel J. Mitchell, Ph.D., is co-founder of the Center for Freedom and Prosperity; a national tax-reform expert; and former senior fellow at both the Cato Institute and the Heritage Foundation. In this exclusive Schilling Show Unleashed Podcast interview, Mitchell discusses the historic rise and fall of the Argentina economy, Milei's libertarian economic leanings, and lessons for America from Argentina's mis-steps.
Humanity can be divided into those who seek to control others and those who do not. Lawrence W. Reed notes that the evil done by the first group is rising, but despair is not an option. It's a shame that partisan politics is so highly dependent upon labels. Daniel J. Mitchell says the battle isn't between right and left, it's statism vs. the individual. It's truly sad to see how the public school system has become an indoctrination camp of sorts for left-wing activism. Even elite private schools are succumbing to the siren song of diversity, equity and inclusion--leading some parents to sue over "bait and switch" tactics. Disappointment is part of the world in which we live. Annie Holmquist has a powerful essay about how even things that are meant for evil can be used for good, with the right attitude. We were commanded to "trust the experts" and let them do the thinking for us for the better part of two years and we're all paying the price for having done so. His articles can be found in such publications as the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Investor's Business Daily, and Washington Times. The OECD has pressured nations to adopt tax harmonization policies. Daniel J. Mitchell, the co-founder of the Center for Freedom and Prosperity, explains that whenever politicians discuss some form of tax harmonization, we can be 100 percent confident that they are always talking about raising taxes rather than lowering them. Golden Shield Resources (CSE: GSRI) is a newly listed gold exploration company that has three projects in Guyana, South America. In our weekly sponsor segment, Chairman Leo Hathaway discusses the company's flagship project in Marudi Mountain, which hosts a historical gold resource and is currently undergoing resource expansion and exploration drilling. Eric Peters from EP Autos joins me for our weekly visit. Among the things we cover today: vaccine hesitancy, how we're being conditioned to live in a "sick" society and how mockery may be the best medicine for drug pushers. One of the great benefits enjoyed by many big businesses is a kind of pseudo-partnership with big government. As John Stossel explains, big business is only too happy to use big government to limit their competition. The mantra "smash capitalism" is pretty fashionable in some circles. Daniel J. Mitchell has a great explanation of how the word "capitalism" has been perverted for many and doesn't always mean what they think it means. This is a great way to better understand what it is and what it isn't and why capitalism is worth defending. Among the more disturbing narratives we're being pushed to believe is the one that posits that anyone who questions the last general election is a racist anti-government extremist who wants to overthrow the US government. Swiss voters overwhelmingly rejected a referendum for basic income back in 2016. Further, Joe Biden expressed skepticism about the idea back in 2017, but he obviously has had a change of heart, given his current support for big, per-child handouts.
We already knew that the coronavirus pandemic resulted in a bigger burden of government, and none of us should be surprised that we also wound up with record levels of waste. Remember, "more government" is not the answer to any sensible question. At some point, we will run out of "other people's money."
Voters seem to be on the right side on the big-picture question of "Should taxes be higher?", but if they think tax increases are going to happen, it’s quite likely that they will support the most economically damaging types of class-warfare levies.
What is more important: “equitable outcomes” or “equal opportunity.” Chairman and Cofounder of the Center for Freedom and Prosperity Daniel J. Mitchell joins the podcast to talk about the important distinction between the two—and, more importantly, why free market advocates need to figure out how to start talking about inequality in America.
The fact that there is growing resistance to the heavy-handed Covid-19 lockdowns isn't going to strike everyone as good news but I find it encouraging. J.D. Tuccille explains how and why more and more Americans are in full revolt against government overreach. It's rare but occasionally someone in government does the right thing. Daniel J. Mitchell has a good example of how the president is working to improve our quality of life with an initiative that tells government to get out of the way. Look, I love to complain as much as the next guy. However, we're doing ourselves a big disservice when we claim that 2020 is "the worst year ever." Art Carden has some needed historical perspective to offer. He encourages us to lighten up. It's not even close to the worst year ever. One of my biggest challenges is maintaining patience with people who grasp for any reason, however tenuous, to excuse tyrannical behavior on the part of the state. A classic example of what this kind of willful blindness looks like can be seen in a story shared by Lenore Skenazy about a mom who was threatened with arrest for letting her kids walk home from school. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/loving-liberty/support
Social media censorship may be annoying but it's not as disturbing as the attempts to silence and marginalize medical doctors and health experts who question the official lockdown narrative. Dr. Scott Atlas has been a special target of the medical censors. Professor Martin Kulldorff of Harvard Medical School has penned a letter asking why. A lot of the fear that we're seeing these days is driven by concern over the loss of political power. T.K. Coleman has some very sound advice on this matter. Check out his essay on Jesus, politics and the culture of fear. While so many voters are simply concerned with power, we'd be wise to remember that principles should be an essential part of why and how we vote. Mike Maharrey of the Tenth Amendment Center reminds us of the nature of the federal government and how it has been flipped on its head. During this point of the election cycle, it can be very hard to remember that the partisan divide is an artificial one. As Daniel J. Mitchell explains, the battle isn't between left and right, it's statism vs. the individual. At the risk of sounding subversive, freedom-loving Americans should not respect offices or laws. Paul Rosenberg makes the case using the words of the individuals who solidified American liberty. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/loving-liberty/support
Here's an interesting thought: Should traffic ticket fines be based on your tax returns? Apparently some folks are floating this idea. Daniel J. Mitchell has a fascinating take on class warfare and traffic fines. So much focus is on national politics right now. Don't forget to stay engaged at the local level. Otherwise local officials might be tempted to go after 9 year old girls for building a tree house. 2020 has been a mixed blessing in some ways. Case in point, politicians have been too busy flexing over a virus to push for what they call "common sense" gun control. Plus several million people have purchased guns and pretty much all the ammo. Mark W. Smith has a few thoughts about the life-saving role of the firearm in personal protection. One of the more interesting political obsessions you're likely to encounter is the funding-conspiracy-theorist. These are people who are certain that everything they don't like is being funded by billionaires like George Soros or Charles Koch. Joakim Book has a great take on how this distraction can take us away from the real issues at hand. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/loving-liberty/support
A Michigan barber is still cutting hair and defying his governor's orders to stay shut down. Now a judge has sided with him saying that the state health department didn't show that he was an actual threat to the public health. Do you get the sense that the American public is forming up? It's not just the upcoming general election that's causing us to choose sides, Daniel J. Mitchell says it has more to do with the fact that there are two Americas. Is the lockdown struggle really about containing a horrific virus? Or, as Dr. Harold Pease asks, is it about the 2020 presidential election? The fact that the country is reopening is good news to just about everyone. Jeffrey A. Tucker reminds us that it never should have shut down in the first place. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/loving-liberty/support

In the last episode, we covered some of the lighter side issues like the importance of slowing down, enjoying our families, nature and the simple things in life. We also discussed the impact the crisis will have on future attendance at traditional four-year colleges and the continued failings of socialized medical systems. Today we are going to look at this topic more from a public policy and economics’ perspective. We examine why the United States' federal government and all centralized political bodies are too big to succeed. In the shadow of the Coronavirus crisis, we look at the dramatic need for deregulation at all levels of government. We end the episode with an examination of the crisis from a constitutional and economic angle: fiat currency, the importance of savings, and the stock market bubble pricked by the Coronavirus. As the 2020 presidential election approaches, it is quite obvious that the Democratic Party is going to shamelessly push a socialistic agenda. In Episodes #32 and #33, I covered the truth about socialism. In this episode we are going to discuss the validity of the demonization of the rich by Democrats. They claim that their very existence is immoral. They claim that they hoard their money. They claim that they are freeloaders. But when you examine the facts; when you examine the benefits betrothed to society by the work of billionaires and the taxes they have already paid (and continue to pay), you quickly realize that this is just another installment of the multi-decades-long effort to divide and conquer the electorate with jealousy, envy and resentment. Gun control is one of the most contentious issues in American politics. The pro-Second Amendment, pro-gun arguments are so much more persuasive and based on facts, common sense, and logic that gun control advocates should be embarrassed to even engage in an argument. We are going to tackle the minimum wage issue with facts, figures, economic laws, and logic rather than, what we usually get - emotional calls for the wage rate increase using illogical arguments that are in direct opposition to economic law. I want to start with a quote by Thomas Sowell from his epic book, Basic Economics that really lays the foundation for this discussion. On page 237 he said: “By the simplest and most basic economics, a price artificially raised tends to cause more to be supplied and less to be demanded than when prices are left to be determined by supply and demand in a free market. The result is a surplus, whether the price that is set artificially high is that of farm produce or labor.” Show Notes: The Real Minimum Wage is $0.00 - New York Times, January 14, 1987 2014 Congressional Budget Office Study Harvard Business Review study, March 2018 eattle minimum wage Minimum wage is bad for low-skilled workers – Daniel J. Democratic socialism is trending hard, not only thanks to Bernie Sanders, but especially after Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a self-proclaimed democratic socialist, won a recent Democratic primary for a congressional seat in New York. But does “democratic socialism” offer anything more than a rebranding of a failed ideology? In America we are living through a perpetual constitutional crisis. The heavy restrictions placed on the federal government by the United States Constitution have been largely ignored for most of the country's history. We have experienced both small and incremental steps in the power and growth of the federal government (federal agencies, bureaucracies and regulations) as well as large and unprecedented leaps (the Alien and Sedition Acts, the internment of Japanese, The Patriot Act, and NSA spying). In this episode I hope to influence the way you look at the federal government going forward - through the eyes of the Founding Fathers. As mentioned in previous episodes, questions are powerful methods of persuasion especially when you require skeptics to answer them. In Episode 2, I posed the question "WHAT ABOUT THE BABY?"
