Four 2nd Commando Regiment veterans share their memories of the Battle of Shah Wali Kot. Life on the Line tracks down Australian military veterans and records their stories. Fifteen years ago, over five days in June 2010, in southern Afghanistan, 150 Australian Commandos and SASR soldiers fought and won the Battle of Shah Wali Kot, our largest engagement since Vietnam. For the Commandos, it was one of the toughest fights of their lives. For the SASR, in terms of kill count, it was their greatest battle ever won. For their grit and professionalism, the Commandos received a battle honour. SASR Corporal Ben Roberts-Smith, for his part in the battle, received our nation's highest military honour – the Victoria Cross – becoming an instant household name. This podcast features the recollections of Dean Parkinson, Gary Wilson, Pete Rudland and Scott Ryder, for the Commando side of this historic battle. Episodes referenced during the podcast include: #92 Dean Parkinson Vol II #100 Gary Wilson #152 Pete Rudland #153 Scott Ryder To see photos related to today's interview, visit our website - www.lifeonthelinepodcast.com - or follow us on social media: @lifeonthelinepodcast on Facebook and Instagram, @LOTLpod on Twitter and 'Thistle Productions' on LinkedIn.
In early 1945, the Allies were advancing in Burma after their hard-won victories at Kohima and Imphal. The focus shifted to the Arakan, a region of dense jungle, mangrove swamps, and unforgiving terrain. For the men sent there, disease, supply difficulties, and the monsoon were as formidable as the Japanese defenders. Among the formations deployed was Britain's 3 Commando Brigade, working alongside Indian and West African divisions of XV Corps in a campaign that tested endurance as much as combat skill. In this episode of the WW2 Podcast, I'm joined by military historian Lucy Betteridge-Dyson. Lucy is the author of Jungle Commandos: The Battle for Arakan, Burma 1945, which tells the story of the Commandos who fought in this overlooked theatre, culminating in the ferocious struggle for Hill 170. Drawing on first-hand accounts, her work reveals the realities of jungle warfare and the contribution of these specialist troops to the final Allied victories in Burma. Jungle Commandos is also available on Audible. patreon.com/ww2podcast

She is also a childhood cancer survivor herself, which propelled her work into the field of social work to help others who are navigating challenging circumstances. Claire works part-time as the Oncology Social Worker at AdventHealth Porter in Denver, is an adjunct faculty for the Graduate School of Social Work at the University of Denver, and works on a contract basis in the field of child welfare.Claire is also the Executive Director of, and inspiration behind, Christmas Commandos, a nonprofit organization that provides emotional support during the holiday season to families who have experienced an out of order loss of a loved one. This support is delivered through the anonymous and secret delivery of meaningful gifts for surviving family members, which are specially shopped for, wrapped and packaged with love. These gifts are secretly delivered to the recipient family's doorstep one evening leading up to Christmas, tagged with a note signed from the Christmas Commandos. The note shares that these gifts have been delivered in the spirit of love as a reminder that their community has not forgotten about them during an incredibly difficult time in their lives. A small angel statue in memory of their loved one is also left on their doorstep, and their front yard is decorated with holiday cheer – garlands, ornaments, and candy canes.https://www.christmascommandos.org/https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100064881512164https://www.instagram.com/christmascommandos*************************************************************Judy Carlson is the CEO and Founder of the Judy Carlson Financial Group, where she helps couples create personalized, coordinated financial plans that support the life they want to live – now and in the future. As an Independent Fiduciary and Comprehensive Financial Planner, Judy specializes in retirement income and wealth decumulation strategies. On this week's podcast, I speak with former US Marine / Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Officer / DEA Agent Bret Hamilton. Bret served in the US Marine Corps as a commissioned Officer. Bret deployed in the 1 st Gulf War. Bret left the Marines and, still having a willingness to serve, he joined the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Police Department as a Patrol Officer. After a couple of years, Bret applied and was accepted to join the DEA Drug Enforcement Agency. Bret worked undercover and worked throughout the US. In 2009, Bret became a member of the Foreign Deployed Advisory Support Team (FAST). Bret deployed to Afghanistan in 2010; he was promoted to team leader after his first tour. In 2011, Bret deployed for his second tour to Afghanistan, working with Task Group 66. On this deployment, Bret was shot in the ass. After Bret recovered from being shot, he deployed in 2012 for his third and final deployment to Afghanistan. There, he met and worked alongside Heston Russell team commander of November Platoon. Bret continued to work in the DEA and was the Agent in charge in the state of Alabama. Recently, an interview conducted with Journalist Mark Willacy was used in the case against Heston Russell. Willacy changed what Bret said in the interview. Bret actually said he had nothing but high praise for Heston and the Commandos, and they were some of the most professional soldiers he ever served with, not what Willacy stated that he never wanted to work with Commandos and Heston. This is a raw and honest account. Presenter: Adam Blum Guest: Bret Hamilton Editor: Kyle Watkins

The Riyadh Comedy Festival is making headlines. Is it comedy-washing—propping up repression, keeping women in chains, and stifling free speech—or is it genuine progress? Yanni dives into Saudi motives, money, and what's really behind the laughs. If you're mad about comedians taking their cash, wait until you hear who else has been pocketing Saudi money. Did the House of Saud do 9/11? Yanni breaks down all the nuance, and ultimately levies an argument that comedians are the commandos rescuing oil money for the U.S. economy—and more. This episode we invite our good friend James to make his feature episode debut! As a reformed Film Snob, he brings great insight, curiosity, and as always tons of fun as we discuss both the practicality and pitfalls of mainstream pretentious critics. When we're on topic, we discuss the role professional movie critics play in audience reception. We also debate if the role of critic is still relevant (or if they ever were), and to what capacity. Perhaps now more than ever the phrase "everybody is a critic" applies, because some of our favorite movies were found ignoring the formal recommendations. When we're sidetracked, we discuss movie going differences between Australia and the States, personal values and parenthood changing our perception, the downfall of movie poster art, and crying during Venom 3, and much, much more!Check out the "I Was A Teenage Film Snob" podcast! James and friends are always having fun and insightful movie discussions, including a growing backlog of interesting industry interviews. https://linktr.ee/filmsnobHave thoughts about the episode? On todays podcast, I speak with Australian Army Black Hawk and Chinook helicopter veteran Kevin Humphreys. Kevin is an inspiring and transformative international keynote speaker, mentor, and author. He's well-known for smashing stereotypes and transforming self-leadership. Graduating top of his pilot's course at just 21, Kevin went on to serve in the Army for 20 years flying Black Hawk and Chinook helicopters. He deployed on numerous overseas operations. In 2006, Kevin was one of the Chinook pilots who flew in under fire into a hot HLZ to pick up the Canadian Special forces in the battle of DA Nile. 24 Commandos were left on the ground facing 300 Taliban. Head back to listen to episode 100 with Craig Hamburger, he was one of the 24 Commandos on the ground that day, and speaks about the respect he has for Kev and the other Chinook pilots that day. Towards the peak of his career, Kevin contemplated suicide and suffered a breakdown due to a cocktail of mental illness, alcohol abuse, and a toxic culture. Kevin not only got back on his feet but also back in the air again, spending the next ten years as a Search and Rescue helicopter pilot, flight instructor/examiner, Chief Pilot, and Director of Operations. Kevin was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his command and courageous leadership under fire in Afghanistan. Kevin was also recognized as the role model for the most recent Military Order of William recipient in the Netherlands (their oldest and highest honour). His impact as a mental health advocate and founder of COR INFINITUS, which gives dignity and respect to the families of those who have served their nation and taken their own lives, was also recognized with the award of a 2023 Community Citizen of the Year. Kevin is the Mental Health Ambassador for AIRBUS Australia Pacific. This is a powerful story of finding peace and redemption. www.corinfinitus.org www.kevinhumphreys.com.au Presenter: Adam Blum Guest: Kevin Humphreys Editor: Kyle Watkins

David Dastmalchian is having one hell of a year. Whether you know him as Polka-Dot Man from "The Suicide Squad," Piter from "Dune," or Jack Delroy from last year's sleeper horror hit, "Late Night with the Devil," the actor/writer/comic book creator has made a habit of stealing scenes and bringing unhinged yet human characters to life. And in 2025, that streak continues across a dizzying lineup of passion projects. In this episode of Bingeworthy, David Dastmalchian joins the show to dig into his wide-ranging work, starting with the new Apple TV+ series "Murderbot," where he plays Gorathen, an augmented human struggling with control, jealousy, and a deep need to protect his crew—even when they don't listen. The show, created by Paul and Chris Weitz and based on the beloved comedic sci-fi book series by Martha Wells, stars Alexander Skarsgård as the titular security unit: a rogue robot just trying to live and watch its stories in peace.

The first animated series for James Gunn's DCU has concluded and we've got a lot thoughts. Mainly, why are we still coding disability as monstrous? Is David Zaslav running security in Pokolistan? What's the over-under on at least one student wanting to get freaky with a fish girl? Is Doctor Phosphorus the show's MVP? They're quickly recapping the season and then dissecting what works and what isn't landing. Why all the happy endings? Then, is anyone else shocked at how good Creature Commandos is getting? We have some thoughts on that, too.
