On this edition of Parallax Views, a new podcast on iHeart Radio is making waves by revisiting, in light of last summer's Black Lives Matter protests in response to the death of George Floyd, the Ferguson uprisings of 2014 and the strange death of a young man in their series After the Uprising. Those uprisings came about after the death of Michael Brown and caused renewed discussion about policy brutality and racism. They were also followed by a series of strange deaths, most notably that of 24-year old Danye Dion Jones. Danye's mother Melissa McKinnies, a prominent activist in the days of the Ferguson unrest, found her son hanged in her backyard. Although ruled a suicide, Danye's family did not accept that conclusion and gave reasons for their belief that Danye was murdered. This is the case that Ray Nowosielski and John Duffy explore in their new podcast series After the Uprising. It's a true crime case that bears social relevance in the age of BLM and questions about police misconduct. And the series, which only recently began airing, promises explosive and shocking revelations. Ray Nowosielski and John Duffy previously joined Parallax Views to discuss their excellent 9/11 book The Watchdogs Didn't Bark: The CIA, NSA, and the Crimes of the War on Terror, which detailed curious intelligence agency failures related to the September 11th, 2001 attacks. Like The Watchdogs Didn't Bark, After the Uprising is not a conspiracy series or a so-called "Truther" investigation. In this episode we discuss that as well as how John and Ray were able to tackle their subject in a non-exploitative way, the key elements of the case covered on the series so far, whether issues like police brutality should be treated as purely partisan political issues by society (Answer: A resounding no), and much, much more!

For this week’s episode I spoke to Melissa Mckinnies about the October 2018 death of her son Danye Jones in St. Louis, Mo. The day still haunts her. On October 16, 2018, Melissa watched a movie with her son. Then around 9 p.m., she said Danye packed an overnight bag which included his toothbrush. Melissa said Danye was going to meet with an unnamed person. Melissa said he was in good spirits and appeared upbeat. After Danye left, Melissa went to bed. However, she was awakened by a nightmare. She said something didn’t seem right. Melissa noticed Danye’s light was on in his basement bedroom. She assumed he had returned home and assumed he was up. This was unusual because he turned off his light when he wasn’t home and he said he was staying over with someone. However, Danye wasn’t in his room. Melissa then saw something strange outside. She went outside to find her son Danye hanging from a tree with his pants pulled down around his ankles. For a brief moment of time, her life just stood still. Her youngest son was hanging from a sheet with balled up fists. After calling the police, they arrived to investigate. Investigators located a chair knocked over near the tree. Melissa told me authorities immediately ruled Danye’s death a suicide. She believes her son was murdered and the hanging was staged. Melissa also said Danye didn’t know how to tie the knots used in the rope around his neck. She also said the sheet used to hang Danye wasn’t from her home. However, St. Louis County police still claim Danye killed himself. Melissa's family is on a mission to have her son's case changed from suicide to homicide. If you have any information about Danye's death, please call 866-371-TIPS.Video clip provided by KMOV4 CBS affiliate in St. Louis, Missouri. Guest: Tory Russell, Mission Manager, International Black Freedom Alliance (IBFA) As the police killing of George Floyd has sparked sparked a historic upheaval across the United States and across the Western world, seasoned activists are already thinking of the step ahead of the emotional momentum. The Ferguson uprising and before it, the one that took place in L.A in 1992 serve as examples of formidable mobilisation and earth shattering emergence of often times silenced realities but with time, many observe no sustainable infrastructure capable of capitalizing of, let's face it, momentary anger, that could bring about struturral change, if not outright lead to a change of system. What lessons are to be learned from the L.A, Ferguson and Minneapolis uprisings and where do we go from here? SUBSCRIBE AND LISTEN TO LE BREAKDOWN on: iTunes, Spotify, Deezer, Google podcast, Stitcher, Radio Public, Breaker, Overcast, Pocket Casts, Podbean and all major podcasting platforms. “Individualism is no antidote to systemic white supremacy” Tory Russell, Mission Manager IBFA Today, I sat with Tory Russell in order to discuss with him current events in Minneapolis and what lessons he learned from the emergence of the Black Lives Matter mouvement. Tory Russell is the Mission Manager at the International Black Freedom Alliance and lead organizer during the Ferguson uprising following the racist killing of Mike Brown, again by a white police officer. This podcast was recorded and made available to you in loving memory of the Ferguson activists that lost their lives in highly suspicious circumstances following their standing against police brutality: MarShawn McCarrel, Darren Seals, Deandre Joshua, Edward Crawford, Danye Jones, Bassem Masri. The assault on Blacks and people of color in America is as American as apple pie. Over the last 6 to 8 years we are starting to see things that were happening back between the early 1900s to the 1960s. It is 2018 and there have been at least 3 lynchings in the last 3 years. Danye Jones was hung on a tree in his backyard in St. Louis. His mother Melissa McKinnes, an activist found her son hanging on the morning of October 17th. There are no suspects and there are also no witnesses. There has not been a formal investigation and the FBI will not be involved either. I find it a coincidence that his mother is an activist and most of the people involved in Ferguson have either been "mysteriously killed with no witnesses or mysteriously committed suicide with no suspects. Some people in law enforcement call "tying up loose ends." Just a few days ago, Gregory Bush went into a Kroger's grocery store and gunned down 2 black customers Maurice Stellard and Vickie Lee Jones in Louisville, KY. When he was asked why he said, "White don't kill white. The Tammie Townsend of Jackson, MS is seeking justice for her son Willie Jones, Jr, who was found hanging in a tree at his child's mother's house in Scott County, MS. The sheriff ruled the death a suicide and the family of Willie Jones is not accepting that ruliing. Just last week, a woman in a St. Louis Luxury Apartment building called the police on a young black business owner in her building because she didn't believe he lived there. She followed him from the front door of the building to his apartment on the 3rd floor. The people who are doing these heinous acts get the narrative from either a movie, the media, or this supremacy is taught at home. People who just happen to be minorities are literally fighting for the lives outside of just trying to make a living. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/10se7enliveshow/message
