Tonight's Jazz Feature is an early version of the Charles Mingus Jazz Workshop recorded on his independent record label: Debut Records. Mingus and drummer Max Roach owned the label during it's short existence (1952 to 1957). Mingus in 1955 had begun a new concept for his bands. No written music. Mingus taught the players from the piano as Mingus was a more than competent pianist. The players memorized the compositions, background riffs and everything without written music and it gave Mingus' bands more what he was aiming for. This band reflects his new concept and hence the name The Charles Mingus Jazz Workshop. This edition was recorded on Sunday evening from 5:50pm to 8:30 pm on December 18,1955 at a small New York club called The Cafe Bohemia.. The band includes George Barrow on tenor saxophone a fine underrated player with a big sound and a cliche-free concept. Eddie Bert, one of the finest trombonists is on the front line. Mal Waldron is on piano, Mingus leads and is on bass and Willie Jones is on drums. The tunes are all arranged by Mingus and with two exceptions the 8 selections are Mingus compositions. This is a fine solid set and is a new beginning for one of the most innovative and creative minds in Jazz music: Charles Mingus.

pWotD Episode 2524: Cowboy Carter Welcome to popular Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of a popular Wikipedia page every day. With 172,652 views on Saturday, 30 March 2024 our article of the day is Cowboy Carter.Cowboy Carter (also referred to as Act II: Cowboy Carter) is the eighth studio album by the American singer Beyoncé. Released on March 29, 2024, via Parkwood Entertainment and Columbia Records, the album is the second installment of Beyoncé's trilogy project conceived during the COVID-19 pandemic, following Renaissance (2022). Mostly labeled a country, western and R&B album, Cowboy Carter contains elements of pop, opera, house, Jersey club, classic rock, hip hop, blues, soul, rock, rhythm and blues and folk. Conceptually, Cowboy Carter is presented as a broadcast by a fictional radio station (called KNTRY Radio) in Texas, with country singers Dolly Parton, Linda Martell and Willie Nelson acting as radio DJs. The album also features lesser known country artists such as Tanner Adell, Brittney Spencer, Tiera Kennedy, Reyna Roberts, Shaboozey and Willie Jones, alongside collaborations with musicians Miley Cyrus, Post Malone, Rhiannon Giddens, Stevie Wonder, Nile Rodgers, Raye, Ryan Beatty and Jon Batiste. Two co-lead singles supported the album—"Texas Hold 'Em" and "16 Carriages".Upon release, Cowboy Carter was met with critical acclaim for Beyoncé's embrace of country music in context of celebrating the genre's Black roots with emphasis on the vocal performance and lyrics. Publications opined that Cowboy Carter highlighted Black musicians' place within country music, causing the listenership of Black country artists on streaming platforms and country radio to increase. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 03:13 UTC on Sunday, 31 March 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Cowboy Carter on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Ayanda Neural.

We are sharing six new modern country songs!Featured in this episode: Josh Ross, Garrett Jacobs, Josh Melton, Austin Snell, Matt Shuster, and a party song from Willie Jones! there is an emerging narrative that country music is making a comeback. Which is an optimistic point of view. What I think we are seeing, and hearing is that old school rock, R&B, and pop from the 90s has found a home in today's country music, and the people that enjoyed the music back then have made the switch too.Case in point, the top two age brackets in country music right now are 45-54 at 20% of total listeners.. If you do the math, music listeners in that age group would've been in their 20s in the 90s right?Yes, and I saw that the second largest group at 18% are between 35-44. They would've been grade schoolers, and middle schoolers in the 90s. Hello! At 17% are 25-34. Which is still pretty strong. These stats were reported by Billboard, and the data is from the Country Music Association. So again, if you grew up listening to a little hip hop, Bon Jovi, and BabyFace, you'll probably find some music you'll like in country right now..Talking about good music, we have some new songs to share with everyone today...Visit our site for interesting stories on country music then, and now..
The less said about the Mets' game in Houston last night, the better. Brett Baty was like the rest of us, watching New York's bats struggle to get anything going against Framber Valdez. No shame in that, Valdez was phenomenal, but that's the game the 2023 Mets get pitched against them that the 2022 Mets simply didn't. They're now farther out of first place at this stage of the season than they've been since 2003, but in a world of wild card multiball… it's still a long way from over. So, here's the Brett Baty home run chain.Brett Baty hit his first home run off Jake Odorizzi, 8/17/22Jake Odorizzi gave up his first home run to Carlos Santana, 9/23/12Carlos Santana hit his first home run off J.D. Authenticity, kindness and integrity go a long way, right? Do you ever feel a pressure in the industry to act a certain way or be a particular kind of person? I know that I have felt this and many people I know from the last 15 years in LA have struggled with this. You think you have to adopt a certain kind of person to fit in or be accepted. I am stoked to share the conversation with my former student, Jamal Wade, who just recently directed Tinashe's latest music video. He truly embodies a genuine, positive energy and I think that has certainly lended itself to his recent success. We chat:How he started diving in to creative directing at such a young ageThe networking that led to his first big jobHow his authenticity and curiosity created opportunityThis episode is great for a creative project - bust out your glue gun and buckle up.www.jamalwade.comhttps://dreambear.org/portfolio/jamal-wade/www.instagram.com/jamalkwadeJamal Wade is a director and choreographer for film and music videos. In this episode, the Minnesota Fight Night podcast recaps the February 25 Showtime-televised card at The Armory in Minneapolis. It was a big night for the hometown boxers, as Minneapolis welterweights Jamal “Shango” James and Ve Shawn Owens — fighting in front of a sellout crowd— won their respective fights in impressive fashion. In the main event, Subriel Matias stopped Jeremías Ponce for a vacant super lightweight title belt. The card also featured one of the most jaw-dropping knockouts of the year as Willie Jones, an underdog, stopped previously unbeaten Derrick Jackson with a well-placed left hook to the chin. The end came at 1:22 of the first round. This episode features post-fight interviews with Owens, James, trainer Sankara Frazier and Matias. Intro music: “Ali Shuffle,” by the Toler/Townsend Band.
