The synagogue shooting trial ended last week — when the man who killed 11 worshipers at a Squirrel Hill synagogue was sentenced to death. It was a long trial, with lots of challenging testimony. And someone close to us attended almost every day: Mallory's mom. City Cast Pittsburgh's Mallory Falk sits down with her mother, Ellen Surloff, who was president of Dor Hadash at the time of the shooting. Hear what she learned from attending nearly every day of the two-month capitol trial, and why it was so important to her and others to bear witness. Want some more Pittsburgh news? On October 27, 2018, a man walked into a Squirrel Hill synagogue and turned an ordinary Shabbat morning into the deadliest anti-Semitic attack in U.S. history. Nearly five years later, he has been sentenced to death for killing 11 Jewish worshipers from three congregations: Tree of Life, New Light, and Dor Hadash. City Cast's Mallory Falk grew up at Tree of Life, attended part of the trial, and spoke to some of those affected. She joins host Megan Harris to discuss the trial, the sentence, and where we go from here. Jury selection is starting for the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting trial. The defendant is accused of killing 11 people from three congregations during worship services in Squirrel Hill in 2018. It was the deadliest attack on Jews in U.S. history. And because it's a federal capital case, the process is complicated and likely to stretch over three months. We're here to talk about what happens next. Thank you to our guest, David Harris. He's a University of Pittsburgh law professor and legal system advisor and educator for the 10.27 Healing Partnership, which formed after the attack to support anyone who'd been affected. October 27, 2018, began as a peaceful Saturday morning. It was the Sabbath many of the residents of Pittsburgh's Squirrel Hill neighborhood, and there was a slight drizzle as they made their way to synagogue. The tree-lined neighborhood about 10 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh is a hub of the city's Jewish community, and one of the largest predominantly Jewish neighborhoods in the country. A profound sense of security reigned in Squirrel Hill, which is home to a dozen synagogues, including the Tree of Life Synagogue, where a killer waited outside.

Jim Geraghty of National Review and Greg Corombos of Radio America recoil at the synagogue shooting in southern California but also honor the heroes who made sure the attack was not far deadlier. They also wince as the annual meeting of the National Rifle Association ends in a very public dispute between two top officials, foreshadowing what may be a very difficult year to come. They slam the New York Times for publishing two anti-Semitic cartoons within just a couple of days. And they remember the late Indiana Sen. Richard Lugar.
Police are reviewing social media posts of the 19-year-old suspect in Saturday's deadly shooting at a California synagogue. One woman was killed and three people were hurt. Today on Sojourner Truth with Margaret Prescod: What Trump and other white supremacists have wrought: the killing of 11 Jewish people in the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh on the Sabbath, Saturday Oct. 27, 2018. And the injuring of six others by a gunman who repeated the phrase "Jews must die." In addition to his blatant anti-Semitism, he was also inspired by Trump's attack on the caravan of migrants now in Mexico on their way to seek asylum at the U.S. border. The Tree of Life was home to Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS), a program that assisted the resettlement of immigrants and migrants. He objected to the resettlement program on a white supremacist/Nazi social media outlet, saying it's "the filthy evil Jews bringing the filthy evil Muslims into the country." And two days prior to the domestic terror attack in Pittsburgh, another domestic terror attack happened against Black people in Jeffersontown, Kentucky, where the shooter after having failed to gain entry to a Black church, shot and killed two Black people. He reportedly said to a witness, "white people don't shoot white people." Our guests are Rabbi Michael Pollack and Nijmie Dzurinko, a co-chair of the Pennsylvania Poor Peoples Campaign, a National Call for Moral Revival. And Brazil has a new president to the right of Donald Trump. Here to break down what's going on in Brazil and the implications of the election, we are joined by Alex main, a Latin America expert and Director of International Policy at the D.C.-based Center for Economic and Policy Research.
First, Jake talks to Pittsburgh mayor, Bill Peduto about the violent shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue. Jake is then joined by the top Democrat on the House Intelligence committee, Adam Schiff to discuss anti-Semitism and if Trump plays a role in the recent violence. Then, Jake speaks to billionaire Democratic donor, Tom Steyer about the shooting in Pittsburgh and the bombs sent to prominent democrats this week -including him. Jake then talks to former White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci about the role of Trump's rhetoric in the events this week. Then, our panel of Amanda Carpenter, Nina Turner, David Urban, and Jonathan Weisman joins to discuss the Tree of Life Synagogue shooting and the way Trump has handled the events this week and anti-Semitism in general. Finally, after a shooting literally in Mr. Roger's neighborhood, we leave you with an evergreen message from Mr. Rogers.
Got started this week with the terrible shooting in the Pittsburgh synagogue that was still unfolding as I went to record, and gave you the latest details. Then it was on to that lunatic mail bomber in Florida, and the latest on the migrant caravan. Plus a married gymnastics coach is caught having sex with a gymnast in his car, random homeless attacker kills student, and a South African guy gets caught in the act banging a cat. Music: The Alkoholiks/"Daaam!"
