Raise your hands, Slackers! After being prompted by a listener to check out Thank you, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story, this week I give my thoughts on this legendary band and try to answer the question, “were they a hair band or just lumped in with them”?This is actually a really good question, and to be honest, it's hard to ignore the time in which they broke through, the sound of albums like Slippery When Wet and New Jersey, and the bands they toured with, when making that assessment. I think a case can be made that they were a hair band, but they didn't stay a hair band. While some bands tried to radically change their sound and image, Bon Jovi managed to shift ever so slightly within the framework of their existing catalog and sound. These subtle shifts kept fans interested, maintained the band's integrity, and allowed for them to continue producing platinum albums, with massive tours. There are only a few bona fide stadium level acts these days, and by sheer hard work and determination, Bon Jovi has remained one of the top tier rock acts for over 30 years. Not bad for a “hair band” out of New Jersey!

This is a special encore episode of Broadway Nation. 1970s Broadway experienced another blast from the past with the return of the Black Musical. More than a dozen hit black musicals opened during the decade, and three of them won the Tony Award for BEST MUSICAL. About half of these were new, original musical plays – mostly adaptations of popular plays or novels. All of them employed a combination of rhythm & blues, pop, rock, jazz and traditional Broadway style music to help tell their stories. The other half were musical revues that showcased the classic songs of the great black songwriters of the 1920s, 30s and 40s. These shows represented a significant black wing of the ongoing Nostalgia Craze. Please join me as I explore the musical plays PURLIE, RAISIN, and THE WIZ,; the gospel musicals DON'T BOTHER ME I CAN'T COPE, AND YOUR ARMS TOO SHORT TO BOX WITH GOD.; and the songbook revues BUBBLING BROWN SUGAR, AIN'T MISBEHAVIN', EUBIE!, SOPHISTICATED LADIES, and BLACK AND BLUE. Today retired NYC police officer Al Smith joins the conversation about police perception. The mainstream media would have us believe that all police are corrupt, but the truth is many men and women serve admirably everyday and endure challenges that most people could not fathom. Bro. Al offers a perspective we rarely get straight from the person who answers our cries to 911. #season6 #walkwithme #blackandblue #TCW Www.thischristianwalk.com

We continue our Best of 2023 episodes with an episode from the Democracy in Danger podcast, hosted by Will Hitchcock & Siva Vaidhyanathan.Law enforcement is among the most undemocratic institutions in America, says New York Times columnist Jamelle Bouie. And the effect this has on communities of color is especially stark. Bouie visits Will and Siva's class for another live recording with their students, to discuss police brutality, the country's culture of violence, and the shifting ground of racial oppression in U.S. history. How citizens experience government, he says, depends a lot on what they look like and what levers of power they hold.Additional InformationDemocracy in Danger PodcastMore shows from The Democracy Group

This week's Mission CTRL episode takes us behind the Blue Wall in Bridgeport. David Daniels III is a Retired Lieutenant from the Bridgeport Police Department. After serving the residents of Bridgeport for over 25 years he decided to call it quits. Daniels was born and raised in the infamous P.T. Barnum Housing Projects and what he learned there prepared him for a lifetime of adversity. What he had to deal with would cause the average person to throw in the towel. Eight months after transitioning from corporate America to Bridgeport PD, Daniels experienced something that would change the trajectory of his career. As an outspoken man of integrity he decided to live by his convictions instead of standing behind the Blue Wall. David was inspired by the late actor Richard Roundtree and at first blush one might think it's because Roundtree played John Shaft while David was coming of age in the 70's. But, that doesn't tell the whole story. Daniels is the author of Black and Blue in Bridgeport and Founder of The Bridgeport Jazz Festival. Tune in to hear how Daniels monetizes his habits during his retirement and get a peek behind the Blue Wall of Silence. Before peeling back the layers of this episode, Ramon and the PD Flight crew discuss the NFL and recap NMSDC Conference in Baltimore. . . . In 1964, Louis Armstrong knocked the Beatles off the top of the charts with his recording of “Hello, Dolly!” becoming, at age 62, the oldest artist to ever hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Sixty years later, Louis Armstrong remains a beloved cultural figure, his oft-imitated voice still instantly recognizable. But Armstrong is more than a source of levity — his artistry and innovations when he made his first recordings a century ago in 1923 set the template for the modern pop star. On this centennial episode, hear Armstrong as you've never heard him: a defiant, pathbreaking musician whose voice resonates in every hit record. Songs Discussed Louis Armstrong - Hello, Dolly! Law enforcement is among the most undemocratic institutions in America, says New York Times columnist Jamelle Bouie. And the effect this has on communities of color is especially stark. How citizens experience government, he says, depends a lot on what they look like and what levers of power they hold.
Rebus Series - For Your Enjoyment
I grew up against a background of casual racism. It was a background heartbeat, a constant ostinato - so socially normalized that it was practically imperceptible. And while I never felt like I was actively part of the problem, I definitely wasn't an active part of the solution. I think of the jokes that shouldn't have been laughed at, but were - or the off-handed comments that were ignored, instead of challenged. And I recognize a complacency - a blithe ignorance. "Black and Blue" is about Tyre Nichols, about the color of bruises, and about the stains that can't be washed out.

Under America's watch yet another perfectly livable black man bites the dust under the guise of police arrest?! When does it stop? What had he done wrong? Why was the 5 black officers fired on site and the 1 white officer given desk duty and his name withheld from press? What are we hiding here? Do blue lives care about black lives in blue suits? Lot's to unpack in this EP. Come into this Ep with a discerning heart, putting yourself in the mother who has to bury her young son's place! Question: Was it a lynching, or an unfortunate "police" error? We'll start with sympathy and end with some foreseeable change! Today we are trying to make sense of the senseless. In the wake of last week's video release exposing the brutal police killing of Tyre Nichols, we are going to talk with retired LAPD Sgt. Cheryl Dorsey, and author of the book, “Black and Blue, The Creation of a Social Advocate.” Sgt. Dorsey will help us get a better understanding of the culture of policing in America, and what needs to change so that police truly serve all the people they are sworn to protect. We often do not talk about the financial burden that comes with mental health struggles. Everyone sees injury or physical illness that can prevent someone from earning the living they want and need to live. But the hard fact is that even though it may be largely invisible to many, a significant number of people struggling with anxiety problems are unemployed or underemployed for some period of time during that struggle. When you are not working or have modified your employment in the form of fewer hours or less responsibility, there is going to be a financial impact on you and your family.
