This episode originally aired June 20, 2023 First-time author David Jacks, a veteran video editor and music supervisor, ran into legendary music producer Peter Asher at a Santa Monica taco joint in 2003 and asked if he could interview him. Jacks, a long-time admirer of the man said to be the inspiration for Mike Myers' “shagadelic” Austin Powers character, who first came to prominence as one-half of the hit-making British pop vocal duo Peter and Gordon and would go on to produce generation-defining albums for artists such as James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Randy Newman, and Diana Ross, immediately asked Asher if he would sit for an interview.  The aspiring journalist thought he might use the interview as the basis for an article in a music magazine, but the two-time Grammy-winning Producer of the Year didn't think anyone would want to read it. With a sleigh that feels like it's held together by Hanukkah prayers and duct tape, Bernie somehow manages to deliver presents across the Midwest. We're talking rooftops, chimneys, and more near-death experiences than a Spirit Airlines landing. Along the way, she's got to wrangle her stoned passenger (Santa with candy cane nunchucks, anyone?), give some real talk to a tiny sad orphan about divorce (because therapy was booked), and dodge TSA agent Gimble, who's basically The Terminator if he hated joy instead of Sarah Connor. And let's talk about the chaos: reindeer meltdowns. An almost crash landing. Bernie's sudden realization that “wait, this sleigh doesn't have seatbelts??” This act is a disaster in the BEST way—like if Seth Rogen got to rewrite The Polar Express. My guest today is David Jacks who joins me to discuss his biography of Peter Asher - 'A Life in Music'. Peter came into The Beatles world via his sister Jane's relationship with Paul McCartney, and soon Peter was a pop star himself as he and his musical partner Gordon Waller took one of Paul's songs to the top of the charts. Peter then went on to a hugely successful career in music production and promotion, including a famous stint at Apple Records.

Peter Asher started out as a child actor in films with John Mills, Alastair Sim and Boris Karloff. He was in the Adventures of Robin Hood with his sister Jane but they were eventually “demoted to peasant children”. He then formed Peter & Gordon, had a global number one with A World Without Love (written by his sister's boyfriend who was living in the family home) and then began a career in production and management that's still thriving today.
