Radical Activism is Needed!"“Be Bold America!” Aired April 3 2026 at 5:00pm (PT)The climate rallying cries to “Save the Planet” no longer work in our hyper-partisan world, nor do images of polar bears on melting glaciers. The problem isn't scientific, fact-based, or even technological. The problem is political, emotional, and ideological. Hackman provides a path forward for engagement and voter mobilization that combats apathy, dread, and resentment, and builds greater issue identification.Conservation and climate advocacy expert, Will Hackman, in his book Radically Reframing Climate Change: A Guide to Saving Ourselves reframes the climate crisis as a humanity crisis, arguing that we must change how we think and talk about climate change, both in our conversations with non-believers and among those who care. Assuring humanity's place on a changing planet will require a near universal level of public support we will never reach if we keep making the same mistakes. We know how to do this. But the stakes have never been higher and time is running out. Interview Guest:Since 2013, Will Hackman has served as a senior strategist in conservation advocacy efforts and has helped to advance public policies related to ocean and land conservation as well as clean energy and the environment. Among his many efforts, Will spent years defending Alaska's Tongass National Forest from industrial logging—the United States' largest national forest and one of the world's largest temperate rainforests. Hackman also worked with local and indigenous communities across the western United States on conservation of public lands and rivers, helped strengthen fuel-efficiency regulations for cars and trucks, helped pass major bipartisan legislation to combat illegal fishing, and engaged in international marine fisheries conservation efforts around the world. Will is a contributing author on energy, environmental, and climate change topics for print, podcasts, and online media. in his 2022 TEDx talk, “The Future of Climate Change is Personal”, Will challenges us to reframe our climate conversations to overcome polarization and partisanship.CoHost:Mike Clancy, is a climate expert who serves on the “Question Review Team” for the Annual Leon Panetta Lecture Series. Thousands of people around the world prayed for Sethie’s three-year-old son, who’d been hospitalized for months. When doctors said Shiloh had “no meaningful brain activity,” Sethie called me. “Sometimes, I’m scared I’m not living with full faith,” she said. “I know God can heal Shiloh and let him come home with us. I’m also at peace if God heals him by taking him to heaven.” Assuring her that God understands like no one else can, I said, “You’ve surrendered to God. That is full faith!” A few days later, God took her precious son to heaven. Though struggling with the grief of losing him, Sethie thanked God and the many people who prayed. She said, “I believe God is still good and still God.” In this world, until Jesus comes again, we’ll “suffer grief in all kinds of trials” (1 Peter 1:6). We’ll need to process real emotions caused by real pain. However, everyone who experiences “new birth” in Christ (v. 3) can be anchored in life by love for Christ and be “filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy” (v. 8). The end result of our faith in Jesus is this: “the salvation of [our] souls” (v. 9). The Holy Spirit empowers us to have full faith—living with our prayers and our situations confidently surrendered to Christ.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: [Link Post] "Foundational Challenges in Assuring Alignment and Safety of Large Language Models", published by David Scott Krueger on June 6, 2024 on The AI Alignment Forum. We've recently released a comprehensive research agenda on LLM safety and alignment. This is a collaborative work with contributions from more than 35+ authors across the fields of AI Safety, machine learning, and NLP. Major credit goes to first author Usman Anwar, a 2nd year PhD student of mine who conceived and led the project and did a large portion of the research, writing, and editing. This blogpost was written only by David and Usman and may not reflect the views of other authors. I believe this work will be an excellent reference for anyone new to the field, especially those with some background in machine learning; a paradigmatic example reader we had in mind when writing would be a first-year PhD student who is new to LLM safety/alignment. Note that the agenda is not focused on AI existential safety, although I believe that there is a considerable and growing overlap between mainstream LLM safety/alignment and topics relevant to AI existential safety. Our work covers the following 18 topics, grouped into 3 high-level categories: Why you should (maybe) read (part of) our agenda The purpose of this post is to inform the Alignment Forum (AF) community of our work and encourage members of this community to consider engaging with it. A brief case for doing so: It includes over 200 concrete research directions, which might provide useful inspiration. We believe it provides comprehensive coverage of relevant topics at the intersection of safety and mainstream ML. We cover a much broader range of topics than typically receive attention on AF. AI Safety researchers - especially more junior researchers working on LLMs - are clustering around a few research agendas or problems (e.g. mechanistic interpretability, scalable oversight, jailbreaking). This seems suboptimal: given the inherent uncertainty in research, it is important to pursue diverse research agendas. We hope that this work can improve accessibility to otherwise neglected research problems, and help diversify the research agendas the community is following. Engaging with and understanding the broader ML community - especially parts of ML community working on AI Safety relevant problems - can be helpful for increasing your work's novelty, rigor, and impact. By reading our agenda, you can better understand the machine-learning community and discover relevant research being done in that community. We are interested in feedback from the AF community and believe your comments on this post could help inform the research we and others in the ML and AF communities do. Topics of particular relevance to the Alignment Forum community: Critiques of interpretability (Section 3.4) Interpretability is among the most popular research areas in the AF community, but I believe there is an unwarranted level of optimism around it. The field faces fundamental methodological challenges. Existing works often do not have a solid method of evaluating the validity of an interpretation, and scaling such evaluations seems challenging and potentially intractable. It seems likely that AI systems simply do not share human concepts, and at best have warped versions of them (as evidenced by adversarial examples). In this case, AI systems may simply not be interpretable, even given the best imaginable tools. In my experience, ML researchers are more skeptical and pessimistic about interpretability for reasons such as the above and a history of past mistakes. I believe the AF community should engage more with previous work in ML in order to learn from prior mistakes and missteps, and our agenda will provide useful background and references. This section also has lots of di...

The Toronto Raptors' Jontay Porter has been permanently expelled from the NBA after a thorough investigation uncovered his involvement in passing inside information to sports gamblers, including betting against his own team. This stringent action came into effect after the NBA was alerted by licensed betting entities and a legal betting tracking organization of suspicious betting activities linked to Porter's performance in a game on the 20th of March, specifically against the Sacramento Kings. Upon careful scrutiny, the league found that Porter had relayed information regarding his health condition to a gambler prior to the aforementioned game. Extraordinarily, an individual known to be actively engaged in NBA betting made a daring $80,000 wager through an online sports book that Porter would fail to reach the general expectations set for him. Had the gamble paid off, it would have resulted in an astonishing win of $1.1 million. Surprisingly, Porter exited that game after a short three minutes, mentioning that he was not feeling well. His on-court statistics did not match the pre-set totals made in the extensive bet. Following this occurrence, the significant $80,000 wager was temporarily suspended and not redeemed, prompting the NBA to swiftly launch an in-depth investigation. The NBA maintains unbending rules when it comes to players participating in sports betting. In this case, Porter was discovered to have considerably infringed the universally accepted Collective Bargaining Agreement. It explicitly states that any player who bets money, directly or indirectly, on any NBA or NBA G league game shall be brought in for questioning, and the commissioner's decision is indisputable and binding. NBA's Commissioner, Adam Silver, bluntly reiterated that Porter's actions being egregiously obvious justified the ban. He was adamant that nothing tops preserving the honor and credibility of NBA competitions for the fans, teams, and every individual connected with the sport. Hence, Porter's gross transgressions of the gaming rules had to be met with the harshest possible penalty. Under Silver's stewardship, Porter marks the second personality to face a lifelong ban from the NBA, with the first being Los Angeles Clippers' owner Donald Sterling in 2014. This historical event evoked an air of surprise, particularly within the upper echelons of the Raptors' organization. Raptors President, Masai Ujiri, displayed shock and sadness over this unfortunate turn of events. He stated, 'Neither was this the anticipated future for the young player, nor a desired situation for our team, and definitely not an outcome that the league would prefer.' Ujiri added that the news was completely unexpected, catching most off guard. Later the Raptors put forth a statement asserting their full support for the decisive action taken to exclude Jontay Porter from the NBA. They appreciated the prompt resolution to the pressing investigation and pledged to cooperate with all forthcoming inquiries. In addition, the investigation brought to light that Porter had wagered on 13 different games, utilizing someone else's betting account with values that varied from a modest $15 to a staggering $22,000. Interestingly, none of these bets were on games in which Porter was a participant. Yet it was revealed that three of these wagers were multi-game parlays, and one of them wagered on his team's loss. Such findings raise critical issues regarding the existing regulatory network currently in play, particularly when it comes to bet types offered on games and player's activity. The NBA Commissioner Adam Silver identified the situation as an opportunity to consider the efficiency of the current regulatory framework. While he acknowledged the transparency brought about by legalized sports betting, Silver expressed concerns regarding suspicious betting patterns, re-emphasizing the need for vigilant monitoring. Assuring league fans, Silver stated, 'Working alongside all relevant players within the industry, the NBA's commitment remains steadfast to ensure it does everything needed to protect its league and the integrity of the sport.' The Porter case serves as a stark reminder for everyone involved in the sport and beyond. It highlights the challenges of maintaining integrity within competitive sport when faced with the growing prevalence of sports betting and the lure of quick fortunes. As one of the major sports organizations, the NBA's swift and stern response sets a strong precedent for others to maintain vigilance and discipline in upholding the spirit of fair and honest play.
