Welcome back to another episode of School Counseling Simplified. Throughout the month of April, I'm bringing you guest sessions with experts in the field, and today I'm excited to introduce Ashley Bell. Ashley is a dedicated school counselor with nearly ten years of experience, a curriculum writer, and the creative force behind Mrs. Bell The Crafty Counselor. She specializes in social-emotional learning and emotional regulation, creating engaging resources for educators, counselors, and parents that support children's mental and emotional well-being. Through speaking engagements, webinars, workshops, and digital resources, Ashley's mission is to make a meaningful impact in the lives of children and the adults who support them. In this episode, Ashley shares practical advice specifically for new school counselors. She emphasizes the importance of observation in the early weeks of the school year. Rather than jumping in to make immediate changes, Ashley encourages new counselors to listen and learn about the school culture during the first month of school. Visiting classrooms and observing during lunch or recess can provide valuable insight into student behavior, peer dynamics, and overall school climate. These observations help counselors better understand classroom management styles, student needs, and areas of support. After the initial observation period, Ashley recommends meeting with your principal to discuss expectations and clarify how your role can best support the school. She reassures new counselors that progress doesn't have to happen all at once—even implementing one classroom lesson within the first nine weeks is a great start. From there, counselors can begin developing a consistent schedule and consider launching small groups based on identified needs. She also suggests avoiding scheduling groups or lessons on Monday mornings and Friday afternoons, as these times can often be less effective. Another helpful strategy Ashley recommends is conducting a staff needs assessment before pushing one out to students. Staff members are often the most aware of behavioral trends and classroom needs, making them a great starting point for gathering data. This can guide counselors in planning relevant and effective services. She also mentions that doing a mid-year needs assessment can be useful once the school year has settled into a routine. When it comes to collaborating with parents and teachers, Ashley reminds us to be patient. It's common for others to expect counselors to have all the answers, but it's okay to set boundaries and be honest about what is and isn't within your role. Simply listening and offering a supportive presence can be incredibly impactful. For lesson planning, Ashley recommends building lessons around a character trait of the month. Thinking about the year in smaller chunks can make planning more manageable and allow for deeper focus. Rather than trying to do everything at once, she encourages counselors to prioritize high-quality, intentional lessons that reflect the needs of their students. Growth and confidence will come with experience. One simple yet powerful tool Ashley uses with students is a quick check-in strategy. She asks students to hold up a one if they need a few minutes to breathe or a two if they're ready to return to class. This nonverbal system gives anxious or overwhelmed students a way to communicate their needs without speaking, which can make a big difference in helping them feel safe and supported. This episode is full of practical, encouraging advice for new and seasoned counselors alike. Ashley's insight provides a grounded and thoughtful approach to starting the school year strong and building meaningful, lasting support for students and staff. Act 3: The Jew Who Saved Christmas Strap in, folks—Act 3 of The Jew Who Saved Christmas takes the chaos of Acts 1 and 2, sprinkles it with some Christmas magic, and cranks it up to “Holy latke, is this really happening?” With Santa still higher than your cousin at a Phish concert, Bernie finds herself fully in charge of the sleigh, a bag of presents, and the fate of Christmas itself. No pressure, right? From a showdown at TSA (where Bernie proves that saving Christmas sometimes means dodging tasers) to a rooftop brawl with reindeer in full meltdown mode, Bernie's journey is a mix of slapstick comedy and heartfelt moments. There's a rogue gingerbread elf screaming on the sleigh radio, Santa pulling Die Hard-level stunts, and Bernie dropping life advice on orphans like she's a jaded holiday therapist. Did we mention she's doing this all while rocking a pair of Uggs and the lingering regret of having roofied the big guy in red? But it's not all chaos (okay, it's mostly chaos). Bernie starts to realize that maybe—just maybe—this whole fiasco is more than a holiday disaster. Maybe it's her chance to prove she's not the screw-up everyone thinks she is. Or maybe it's just a chance to survive one more sleigh ride without hurling. Either way, it's pure comedic gold. The Cast Still Slaying It: Jeff Bergman, Selyna Warren, Jim O'Heir, Marissa Read, John Milhiser, Kiel Kennedy, Tiffany Black, Carla Delaney, Ashley Bell, and David Jacks continue to bring their A-game, balancing over-the-top laughs with just the right amount of holiday heart. ✨Act 3 of The Jew Who Saved Christmas is what happens when Elf meets Superbad at a menorah-lighting party. It's absurd, hilarious, a little sweet, and the perfect ending to a holiday tale that's anything but traditional. Whether you're here for the laughs, the feels, or just to see how Bernie gets out of this mess, you won't be disappointed.
Act 2: The Jew Who Saved Christmas So, remember how Bernie accidentally roofied Santa? Yeah, things have escalated. Turns out, when you drug the guy who single-handedly runs Christmas, the universe hands you the reins of a magical sleigh and screams, “Good luck, schmuck!” Act 2 is Bernie's full-blown trial by (latke) fire as she fumbles her way through saving the holiday while Santa cycles between being zonked out and, uh, aggressively unhinged. With a sleigh that feels like it's held together by Hanukkah prayers and duct tape, Bernie somehow manages to deliver presents across the Midwest. We're talking rooftops, chimneys, and more near-death experiences than a Spirit Airlines landing. Along the way, she's got to wrangle her stoned passenger (Santa with candy cane nunchucks, anyone?), give some real talk to a tiny sad orphan about divorce (because therapy was booked), and dodge TSA agent Gimble, who's basically The Terminator if he hated joy instead of Sarah Connor. And let's talk about the chaos: reindeer meltdowns. An almost crash landing. Bernie's sudden realization that “wait, this sleigh doesn't have seatbelts??” This act is a disaster in the BEST way—like if Seth Rogen got to rewrite The Polar Express. And just when Bernie starts thinking, “Hey, maybe I'm good at this?”—the universe is like, “LOL, nah.” Cue Santa going full Maccabee berserker mode. And the cast? They're killing it: Jeff Bergman, Selyna Warren, Jim O'Heir, Marissa Read, John Milhiser, Kiel Kennedy, Tiffany Black, Carla Delaney, Ashley Bell, and David Jacks make this ride more fun than watching your drunk uncle try to carve the turkey. Everyone's bringing their A-game, delivering laughs sharper than Bernie's wit and just enough heart to keep you invested in this glorious dumpster fire of a Christmas tale. ✨Act 2 of The Jew Who Saved Christmas is snarky, chaotic, and unexpectedly sweet. It's everything you'd want in a holiday comedy—plus a little weed, some questionable decisions, and a lot of screaming. Who knew saving Christmas could be this messy—or this much fun?
Act 1: The Jew Who Saved Christmas Welcome to the holiday chaos you never knew you needed. Meet Bernie Gold—Spirit Airlines check-in clerk, reluctant adult, and connoisseur of bad decisions. It's Christmas Eve (or, as Bernie will remind you, the seventh night of Hanukkah), and while the rest of O'Hare Airport is brimming with holiday cheer, Bernie's slouching her way through TSA complaints, confiscated wine bottles, and unsolicited career advice from her aggressively optimistic co-worker, Eve. Bernie's life is a snow globe of dysfunction, and someone just shook it—hard. Enter a mysterious piece of "Miracle Gelt" that takes this night from mildly chaotic to “holy crap, is that actually Santa Claus in my parents' garage?” Let's just say Santa's not exactly in prime sleigh-piloting condition, and Bernie might've had something to do with it. What follows is a whirlwind of edible-fueled mishaps, family judgment, and a holiday disaster that's teetering on the edge of redemption. And the Cast? This lineup will make you laugh so hard you'll spill your eggnog: Jeff Bergman (@jeffbergmanofficial) – The voice legend who brings magic to every moment. Selyna Warren (@selynadoubleya) – Writer, star, and the kind of comedic genius that keeps you hooked. Jim O'Heir (@therealjimoheir) – The guy who stole your heart in Parks and Rec steals the show again. Marissa Read (@marissalread) – A double-duty powerhouse delivering laughs and heart. John Milhiser (@johnmilhiser) – Former SNL dynamo bringing the absurdity to life. Kiel Kennedy (@kielkennedy) – The gold standard of comedy chaos. Tiffany Black (@tiffanyblackness) – Pure holiday hilarity in human form. Carla Delaney (@voicesbycarla) – The kind of voice work that makes you laugh even when you don't want to. Ashley Bell (@ashleymichaelbell) – A scene-stealer who brings charm and mischief in equal measure. David Jacks – An actor who makes every moment count. ✨This isn't your cookie-cutter holiday story. It's raw, messy, ridiculously funny, and filled with just the right amount of holiday heart. Elevator Pitch: In Act 1 of The Jew Who Saved Christmas, you'll laugh, cringe, and maybe even tear up a little as Bernie Gold stumbles her way through a Hanukkah-Christmas mashup of biblical proportions. With sharp dialogue, hilariously flawed characters, and just enough holiday magic to keep you guessing, this is the start of a holiday tale that's anything but traditional—and we wouldn't have it any other way.

We are exploring economic inclusion this season, and today we are diving into the history of banking and financial structures in the United States and how they have often excluded minority groups. Ashley Bell is the co-founder and general counsel of the National Black Bank Foundation, which provides nonprofit expert legal, regulatory, and operational support to Black-owned banks. And Sui Ling Panoke currently serves as Senior Vice President of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for Zions Bank.In this episode, Ashley and Sui Lang sit down with host Frances Johnson and discuss how banks were leveraged against people of color from the very beginning, finding a bank that supports your values, minority depository institutions, and some exciting developments right here in Utah, aimed at addressing and closing the racial wealth gap. Eccles Business Buzz is a production of the David Eccles School of Business and is produced by University FM.Episode Quotes:The power of risking in yourself[14:14] Ashley Bell: There's been several studies that show there's been over a trillion-dollar impact that discrimination and lack of access to capital to underserved communities is costing us a trillion dollars annually in our economy in spending. This is spending power that communities would have more of if they had access to the capital. And when you think about it holistically, the more you stymie the economy by telling people they can't have access to capital to take a risk and start their own business, to be able to receive the right capital to own their own home and create assets that way through appreciative home value. Then you take a marginalized community, and you leave them with fewer options, many of which become the burden of the state. Many of that, which becomes welfare programs, become more government assistance, and these people have to be reliant on that to be able to survive. So if you really want to see less reliance on the government having to step in and take care of people that can't make it work, then give them the opportunity to take a risk on themselves. There's no greater act of self-determination than entrepreneurship[15:05] Ashley Bell: If you really want to see less of a reliance on the government having to step in and take care of people that can't make it work, then give them the opportunity to take a risk on themselves. There's no greater act of self-determination than entrepreneurship. And you have so many entrepreneurs in these marginalized communities that just need access to create businesses. And many times, these are small businesses that could easily be sustained in these small economies in their own community, but they don't get the access to do so.On Zion's bank commitment to close the gaps[22:33] Sui Lang Panoke: One of our core values is equality. Equality, opportunity, and access. So, we are very committed to closing gaps. So, it could be the gender pay gap, it could be the racial wealth gap, and it could be the trust gap and opportunity gaps that still exist in our communities as well. So, it's very important to us to invest not just monetarily but through building relationships, right? Mending those trust gaps that still exist in ways in which we can build meaningful relationships, meaningful partnerships, and work towards building the world's most inclusive economy. What is the core of redemption?[18:54] Ashley Bell: Throughout our history, people in marginalized communities have not received any grace or mercy from our financial system. This is what redemption is about. With grace and mercy, there can always be redemption. And we think that we can give that opportunity to people who are looking for it. And we'll start in Salt Lake, but be the center of gravity for an entire nation. The key to institutional sustainability[24:38] Sui Lang Panoke: A critical part of building a long-term sustainable and profitable institution in our industry is staying true to who you are and focusing, honing in on what your values are, who you are as an institution, and what is going to carry you through the next generation.Show Links:National Black Bank FoundationReady LifeRedemption Holding CompanyAshley Bell LinkedInAshley Bell X/Twitter Ashley Bell InstagramZions BankSui Lang Panoke LinkedInSui Lang Panoke Instagram
