Give online therapy a try at betterhelp.com/BENEATH and get on your way to being your best self.” ** With her crystal clear soprano voice, porcelain doll face, and fierce acting talent, ANN BLYTH became a much in-demand star in the 1940s and 1950s. While known mostly as a romantic musical comedy star in film such as “Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid” (1948), “Rose Marie” (1954), and “Kismet” (1955), she was also a deft dramatic actress when given the chance. Who can forget her as Veda, he daughter who made JOAN CRAWFORD's life a living hell, in “Mildred Pierce” (1945), or as the down-trodden alcoholic singer in “The Helen Morgan Story” (1957)? Blyth turns 96 on August 13th and is truly a living legend. Listen this week as we pay tribute with an episode about Ann Blyth's remarkable life and career. It's not intelligence, not social skills, not even confidence; it's focus. And does that feel like it's getting easier or harder for you? You're not alone. We're in an age of distractions. In 2007, it was estimated that you saw around 4 to 5,000 ads a day. You know what that number is estimated today? Over 10,000. 10,000 pieces of information trying to steal your focus away from you. And now, we've got what the metaverse coming, where we're all going to be locked in with our VR goggles, eyes literally peeled, and seeing like 20,000 ads a day. What's in this video is the solution, I promise, for someone who was super distracted, couldn't focus, used all the excuses in the world, to finally having something click, being able to lock myself down, and whatever I set my mind on, it gets done. We're going to cover what deep work is and what it's not, the three rules you need to know to work deeply, and the three best pieces of productivity advice. This video can be dense, but I promise it'll be one of the most important ones you watch all year. Full credit, this comes from Cal Newport's book 'Deep Work,' although this is not a book review, I'm pulling a lot from what's in here. Deep work is your ability to focus on a demanding task without distractions, not just any task, usually one that pushes your cognitive abilities. Now, obviously not everything is deep work, so there's also another type of important but different work called shallow work. Shallow work describes tasks that aren't cognitively demanding, things like answering emails, attending unproductive meetings, and more of just the day-to-day things that you have to do but aren't super cognitively demanding. Let's say you're a content creator; shallow work is answering your emails, using social media, planning, running payroll for your team, tweaking thumbnails, researching camera gear, etc. Deep work is filming and writing videos. Now, you're probably asking, well, okay, what is my deep work? Deep work is usually the things we're avoiding. If you wiped away everything and could only do one or two things that day, what would those one or two things be that actually like progressed you towards your goals? That's your deep work right there. So, that's deep work, that's shallow work, there's a third bucket called distractions, and these are what you want to minimize at all costs. The richest companies that ever existed are the social media companies, and they literally make these apps like slot machines, where it's random intermittent spikes, likes, notifications. So minimizing distractions is universal, and we all struggle with it. The more distractions that hijack your dopamine circuits, the less motivation you have. Remember, dopamine is that neurotransmitter that's for wanting, cravings, and drives. So if you're getting excess dopamine from all these distractions, no wonder you have less motivation to do your work, and no wonder you procrastinate more. So now that you know what deep work is, let's go over three reasons why it's really important for you and why it's super valuable and something you should prioritize. Our economy has moved away from Brute Force labor to more analyzing and applying information. The skills that are going to Succeed In This Modern economy are complex problem-solving, data analysis, computer programming, art—anything that requires deep work to really learn and execute. Put another way, your ability to work deeply is what is valued and will determine the future of if you're able to thrive in this economy or get wiped out with things like AI. Goldman Sachs estimates AI is going to replace 300 million jobs, and by 2030, McKinley's estimating it is between 400 million and 800 million; there will be new ones created from that, but that is a lot of jobs. So, this idea of job security that I'm just going to like learn a skill, and it's going to be secure, it doesn't really exist. The only thing that exists is if you know how to focus and you know how to work deeply, you're going to excel because the cognitively demanding tasks are the things that take a lot of presence and a lot of like you, that's the things that are going to stand out and be rewarded. Refusing to settle, Clark

So in recent news, a concerning scam from the Financial Hardship Department is targeting Americans across the country. This was actually brought to my attention from my mother. She reported something suspicious to her IT department, which is me. She received an email with the subject that was her full name, and inside the email was a very compelling argument. That she was entitled to some sort of student loan forgiveness plan, and the money is available right away. And this specific scam isn't necessarily breaking news, but this type of scam, this category of scam, is very effective and very prevalent. And this is because of a thing called OSINT, or Open Source Intelligence, where people can use information they find online about you in order to get you to do things. So, if someone wrote you an email And they knew exactly how much student debt you had, and they knew your full name, and they knew you ran to school. You might be more enticed to give them a call, respond to the email, or even click a link. If you're interested in seeing this email and walking through all of the key indicators that this is not a legit email, and it is in fact a scam, I'm going to be posting a reel a little bit later today on our Instagram that we'll have the email and we're going to go through each one of the indicators that this is a scam so that you can help protect yourself against this scam. But just a high level, the email came from someone at hotmail. com. Nobody with any clout is going to email you from a personal email address. Step one. All right. Number two, there's a sense of urgency. It says that you have a case open, but for only one more day. So give us a call back at this number. And just for fun, I went ahead and gave this number a call using my google voice number and was ready to record it and talk to them and see what they were gonna try to get out of me and maybe give them some fake information. The email was received yesterday and since then the number has been decommissioned. Calling the scammer. Bummer. There are also some weird formatting issues with this email. And then at the bottom, it says you opted into advertising services, provides an address, and then it provides a URL to unsubscribe. This specific email is formatted so poorly that the URL doesn't even become clickable. But they're trying to get you on two directions here. They're trying to get you to call and give up your information. And they're trying to get you to click this unsubscribe link. Now that kind of gets your wheels turning, doesn't it? Most emails have unsubscribe links, and most of them are from emails you might not even recognize. You just want to get them out of your inbox. Now trust me, I am all for inbox sanitization and organization, but clicking unsubscribe links as a habit is a bad one. Clicking any links in an email is a bad habit. And yes, unsubscribe is URL that could take you wherever you want. And usually, when you're about to click it, you're kind of in a hurry, you're not really checking, you're not thinking about it. So attackers know this, and they're going to send you something you really don't want, and they're going to provide a link to unsubscribe. Probably don't click it. Instead, send it to spam. Send it to junk. Train your inbox to send that somewhere else where you don't have to worry about it. Even if the unsubscribe link isn't malicious, it can serve a different purpose. It can let attackers or scammers know that that email address is active. And might actually ramp up the amount of spam, scam emails, or newsletters you may get because people are interested in buying your email address if they know it's an active email address. So now you've just confirmed it, they might go sell it to some other people. It might actually increase the amount of spam you get. There is a service called unroll. me that can help consolidate and manage email subscriptions efficiently. It allows you to view all your subscriptions in one place and makes it easy to unsubscribe from them. Another thing you can do is use alias emails. So if you're an iPhone user, The iPhone will often prompt you to mask your email address. It's a good idea because you can delete that email address at any time. If you start getting spam from it, you can also use tools like fast mail or start mail, and just generate a new email address that forwards to your normal email address. This will also help protect you and your privacy online because they're not just mapping one email address to your identity. Now they have to map tons and tons to keep track of you. So it'll help reduce trackers on Google. It'll help reduce. The efficacy of certain attacks when your password is breached on the dark web. So for more tips and tricks, and for a further analysis on these scam emails, be Instagram later today. Cybersecurity firm Mandiant has exposed how the notorious Sandworm hacking group linked to Russian military intelligence, has camouflaged its cyberattacks by masquerading as hacktivist groups. The Russian ensemble, known by aliases such as Black Energy, Seashell Blizzard, and Voodoo Bear, has been active since 2009, and their operations are accredited to Unit 74455 of Russian's GRU. Mandian's latest findings suggest that Sandworm operates under several online personas to launch data leaks and disrupt operations. Notably, three hacktivist branded telegram channels named Zaxnet Team, Cyber Army of Russia Reborn, and SolSopec, that's Russian, have been instrumental in disseminating pro Russian narratives and misleading the audience about the origin of the cyberattacks. These personas act independently, yet share a common goal of aligning their activities with Russian interests. So, before we move on, just a quick note on hacktivism. There are a few main motivators for attackers when placing an attack. Money, power, fame. And activism is a pretty popular one. So to help give an idea of what a hacktivist organization would be like, it's maybe a pro Ukraine organization that's working to spread the truth about what's going on in a foreign war, and so they might be trying to actually hack the Russian government to help Ukraine, or something like that. Their motivation is not money, so they're not out there trying to get credentials to their bank accounts and stuff like that. They're trying to work towards their organization's mission, which is to spread the truth about foreign wars in favor of a certain country. So these Russian attackers that are responsible for many attacks on U. S. critical infrastructure, especially water utilities, are gaining footholds by pretending to be a hacktivist group. Maybe they're pro Russia, maybe they're pro Ukraine. They're doing what they can to try to sway public opinion in Russia's favor, which involves all sorts of propaganda that I'm not even aware of. But Mandiant's report extends beyond the facade of hacktivism. They have traced back multiple cyber incidents to Sandworm, including attacks on water utilities in the U. S. and Poland, and hydroelectric facilities in France. The authenticity of these intrusion remains under investigation, but confirmation of related malfunctions by U. S. utility officials lends proof. Furthermore, Sandworm's influence operations are designed to bolster Russian wartime objectives by seeding misinformation and creating an illusion of widespread support for the war. The sophistication of these tactics illustrates a strategic shift from direct sabotage in Ukraine, where they targeted critical infrastructure like state networks and the power grid, to a more nuanced cyber espionage and intrusion. influence operations. Mandiant also highlights APT44's activities over the past year including targeting NATO countries electoral systems and engaging in intelligence collection to aid Russian military efforts. The threat posed by APT44 is severe, with ongoing operations focused on Ukraine and an elevated risk of interference in upcoming national elections and significant political events worldwide. So this election season, especially in the United States, is going to be absolutely crazy. The simplicity of access that these foreign, quote, hacktivists or propaganda pushers have over the United States is huge. It's palpable. They can just create TikToks about something you're interested in, which is Ukraine and the things that are happening in this foreign war, and you share it, and the more it gets shared, the more validity it accumulates in people's eyes. And this rapid consumption of social media has almost completely forgotten about citing sources or doing any sort of further research into what you just saw on a 60 second video clip. So I encourage you personally to, I mean, first of all, don't spend too much time on social media. If you get, if you catch yourself doom scrolling, try to get off and go on a walk. And second of all, think about everything you watch as if it were a lie. How could this video be lying to you right now? How could this video be stretching the truth? You know, are these videos actually shot where they are? Are they in front of a green screen? What sources do these people have? to claim what they're saying. Is what they're saying promoting a specific narrative? Maybe for Russia, maybe for Ukraine. And if so, that increases the likelihood that what they're saying is stretched or slightly untrue. So just as we have to look at every email with a lot of scrutiny, make sure we don't click any bad links, we also have to look at everything we consume because our brains are very vulnerable to what we see. And the internet right now is just pushing what we already believe, further enforcing our misbeliefs. There's been a notable spike in brute force attacks globally, as reported by Cisco. Specifically targeting devices such as VPNs, or virtual private networks, web application authentication interfaces, and SSH services. Cisco Talos experts pinpointed that these attacks have been originating from Tor exit nodes and various anonymizing tunnels and proxies since at least March 18th of 2024. The implication of these attacks are serious, potentially leading to unauthorized network access, account lockouts, or even denial of service conditions. A range of devices have come under siege, including popular VPN solutions like Cisco Secure Firewall VPN, Checkpoint, Fortinet, SonicWall, along with RD web services and brands such as Mikrotik, Draytek, and Ubiquiti. Stomp's foot on Ubiquiti. Cisco Talos has identified that the brute forcing attempts not only utilize generic credentials, but Also valid usernames tied to specific organizations, indicating a methodical approach to this cybersecurity threat. The attack traffic, as analyzed, predominantly flows through known proxy services such as TOR, VPNgate, IPDEA proxy, BigMama proxy, SpaceProxies, NexusProxy, ProxyRack, etc. And details on the IP addresses and the credentials used in these attacks have been compiled and made accessible for the concerned parties to bolster their defenses. So check out the show notes if you want more IOCs of this, so that you can maybe set up some signature detections or behavior detections, etc. In parallel to these brute force incidents, Cisco has raised alarms about password spray attacks, etc. targeting remote access VPN services as well. This trend was highlighted alongside a recent disclosure from Fortinet FortiGuard labs reporting the exploitation of a patched vulnerability in TP Link Archer AX21 routers by DDoS botnet malware facilities. Which brings us back to our SoHo days, right? If you're running one of these routers, make sure it's patched. Make sure your home router is up to date. You don't want to be getting DDoS'd by a botnet. Or you don't want to be part of the botnet that does the de tossing, excuse me. Security researchers, Cara Lin and Vincent Lee from FortiGuard Labs underscore the continuous threat posed by botnets, which exploit IOT vulnerabilities relentlessly. They strongly advise users to remain vigilant against DDoS botnets and to apply patches promptly. Cisco has provided several recommendations to mitigate the risks associated with these type of cyberattacks. These include enabling logging, okay, securing default remote access VPN profiles, and blocking connection attempts from identified malicious sources. Specific guidance involves implementing interface level ACLs using the shun command and configuring control plane ACLs to further fortify network defenses against unauthorized access attempts. Moreover, Cisco suggests considering additional hardening implementations for RAVPN, such as adopting certificate based authentication to enhance the security posture against these ongoing cyber threats. So I will definitely be taking a. Much deeper look at these IOCs for my own personal network, because yeah, this can apply to enterprises and this can apply to tech enthusiasts who set up VPNs to access their own home network. So let's, uh, not to point any fingers at myself, but that's definitely something I want to avoid being compromised. So if you're hearing this, IOCs in the show notes and let's stay ahead of this. And that's all we got for you today. Tomorrow, we're going to be releasing just a discussion episode about the key takeaways from HackspaceCon, which occurred last weekend. The two co hosts from this podcast were lucky enough to be able to attend and boy, were we inspired. So if you're interested in hacking satellites or what kind of vulnerabilities satellites have. Or other things that I never considered from a non space background. Be sure to check that episode out tomorrow.

The Alternative to Brute Force Selling

Top Secrets

Brute force selling usually comes about when someone feels like they have to sell their product or service, regardless of the needs, wants, or desires of their prospect. The alternative is better understanding, relationship building, and effective qualification. David: Hi, and welcome to the podcast. In today's episode, cohost Jay McFarland, and I will be discussing the idea of brute force selling. Welcome, Jay. Jay: Hey, thank you so much, David. I know we've talked about a lot of different issues, you know, generating leads and those types of things. I'm very anxious to talk about this brute force. When I hear it, as a customer, I'm like "brute for selling? What exactly do you mean here?" Because I might want to run away from it. The Case Against Brute Force Selling David: Yeah, well, I'm not really here today to advocate for brute force selling, okay? So, definitely not my first choice, but it seems to me like there are so many people, so many industries that tend to engage in it, that I thought we should probably have the discussion. Jay: Yeah. I mean, nothing could be worse than chasing potential clients away. I think there's a fine line between brute force and still trying to help customers understand the importance of your products and using good sales techniques. It's really a fine line. Isn't it? David: It is. There's definitely a balance. And I think there's a big difference between persistence and brute force selling. But to get to the core of it. I think one of the biggest problems that a lot of small business owners and salespeople have today is that they think in terms of selling. I have to sell this product, or I have to sell this idea. I have to sell this concept. I have to sell this customer. "I have to sell," being the main thing. When you're approaching someone for the first time with the idea of, "I have to sell," it's easy to slip into the wrong gear about trying to push what you have onto them before you've even identified, whether they have a need desire, money, budget, willingness to spend, any of those things. When I think in terms of brute force selling, to me, it's often about people who have gotten into sales. They've been given maybe a lead sheet or in the old days, it was a phone book by their manager who said, "Go make sales. Knock yourself out." And when you don't know how to do that well, then trying to sort of push or bully or cajole people into buying from you becomes the default. So when the focus is just on sales as the first, middle, and end of the process, it's kind of a lose/lose for both the salesperson and the prospect. Also for the company. So it's a lose all the way around. Effective Qualification is the Key If we can train salespeople on the idea of first determining need, identifying whether or not this person is a good candidate for what we're selling. I mean, we're really just talking about qualifying. And a lot of salespeople and even a lot of sales managers fail to make the distinction between qualification and selling. When we're qualifying somebody, we're not trying to convince or persuade them to buy our stuff. We're trying to find out if our stuff even makes sense for them. And what I've seen over the years is that there are a lot of salespeople who waste enormous amounts of time pushing and trying to sell to people who have absolutely no capability even to buy what it is that they're selling. Without taking that step back and saying, okay, let's do a little qualification first. Let's find out what this person is dealing with, and what sort of help they need. And if I can even help them, if you do that first, then you can find out pretty quickly if somebody is a good prospect for you or not. And if they're not, then rather than trying to push them into buying something that they don't want or can't afford you can thank them for their time. And you can actually move on and get in front of somebody who has a much better li...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Brute Force Manufactured Consensus is Hiding the Crime of the Century, published by Roko on February 3, 2024 on LessWrong. People often parse information through an epistemic consensus filter. They do not ask "is this true", they ask "will others be OK with me thinking this is true". This makes them very malleable to brute force manufactured consensus; if every screen they look at says the same thing they will adopt that position because their brain interprets it as everyone in the tribe believing it. Anon, 4Chan, slightly edited Ordinary people who haven't spent years of their lives thinking about rationality and epistemology don't form beliefs by impartially tallying up evidence like a Bayesian reasoner. Whilst there is a lot of variation, my impression is that the majority of humans we share this Earth with use a completely different algorithm for vetting potential beliefs: they just believe some average of what everyone and everything around them believes, especially what they see on screens, newspapers and "respectable", "mainstream" websites. This is a great algorithm from the point of view of the individual human. If the mainstream is wrong, well, "nobody got fired for buying IBM", as they say - you won't be personally singled out for being wrong if everyone else is also wrong. If the mainstream is right, you're also right. Win-win. The problem with the "copy other people's beliefs" algorithm is that it is vulnerable to false information cascades. And when a small but powerful adversarial group controls the seed point for many people's beliefs (such as being able to control the scientific process to output chosen falsehoods), you can end up with an entire society believing an absurd falsehood that happens to be very convenient for that small, powerful adversarial subgroup. DEFUSING your concerns This is not a theoretical concern; I believe that brute-force manufactured consensus by the perpetrators is the cause of a lack of action to properly investigate and prosecute what I believe is the crime of the century: a group of scientists who I believe committed the equivalent of a modern holocaust (either deliberately or accidentally) are going to get away with it. For those who are not aware, the death toll of Covid-19 is estimated at between 19 million and 35 million. Covid-19 likely came from a known lab (Wuhan Institute of Virology), was likely created by a known group of people (Peter Daszak & friends) acting against best practices and willing to lie about their safety standards to get the job done. In my opinion this amounts morally to a crime against humanity. And the evidence keeps piling up - just this January, a freedom of information request surfaced a grant proposal dated 2018 with Daszak's name on it called Project DEFUSE, with essentially a recipe for making covid-19 at Wuhan Institute of Virology, including unique technical details like the Furin Cleavage Site and the BsmBI enzyme. Note the date - 3/27/2018. Wait, there's more. Here, Peter Daszak tells other investigators that once they get funded by DARPA, they can do this work to make the novel coronavirus bond to the human ACE2 receptor in... Wuhan, China. Wow. Remember, this is in 2018! Now, DARPA refused to fund this proposal (perhaps they thought that this kind of research was too dangerous?) but this is hardly exculpatory. Daszak et al had the plan to make covid-19 in 2018, all they needed was funding, which they may simply have gotten from somewhere else. So, Daszak & friends plan to create a novel coronavirus engineered to infect human cells with a Furin Cleavage Site in Wuhan, starting in mid-2018. Then in late 2019, a novel coronavirus that spreads rapidly through humans, that has a Furin Cleavage Site, appears in... Wuhan... thousands of miles away from the bat caves in Southern China ...

The Chinese Communist Party sees technology innovation as the main battlefield of its industrial policy - and its ultimate weapon for achieving global dominance. The United States and the Biden Administration needs to confront the reality of what has been called China's “brute force economics” and abandon the possibility that competing on a level playing field with China's is possible. We have to face up to the fact that we are not simply in an economic competition with China. We're in a war. Joining the Bill Walton Show to explore this troubling reality is our returning guest: Robert D. Atkinson. Rob is the founder and president of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, one of the world's top think tanks for science and technology policy.  China's tactics are not merely an assortment of cutthroat moves made by individual actors. Rather, they are features of Beijing's long-term strategy and are backed up by the full force of the country's party-state system, creating a challenge that Washington cannot afford to ignore. Beijing is intent on employing predatory and mercantilist practices to acquire leadership positions in virtually every emerging and advanced industry that matters.  It's doing this through market access restrictions, massive industrial subsidies that fuel overcapacity, technology transfer requirements for market access, preferential financing and procurement contracts for domestic firms, intellectual property theft, cyber- and human-enabled espionage, coercion and bullying, forced labor and other poor labor conditions, and other market-distorting policies. They've already established dominance in industries including steel, solar panels, drones, shipbuilding, pharmaceutical ingredients, high-speed rail, and telecommunications equipment; and are making rapid progress in artificial intelligence (AI), aerospace, semiconductors, biotechnology, networking technologies, and electric vehicles and batteries, cloud computing, flat panel displays, advanced materials, autonomous systems, and LiDAR technology.  Fortunately, as Rob explains, there are some straightforward and implementable actions the United States can take to push back against China's agenda. If you've been wondering about what the economic battle with China is all about, this conversation is a great place to understand its essentials.

It was a freezing cold morning in mid-January 2004 when a repair crew for the local electric and gas company in Princeton, NJ decided to take a break and go get some hot breakfast. The two men had been out all night fixing power poles and lines that had come down in a recent snowstorm. On their way to the diner, they saw a dark green SUV – engine running – sitting with its front wheel submerged in six inches of water in a creek that ran alongside the road. Thinking the car had been parked there by a local hunter, they didn't think anything of it until their return trip an hour later. Seeing that the car was still there and the engine still running, they decided to stop their lift truck and go make sure that what they saw wasn't a car accident. A few minutes later, after peering inside the drivers' window, both men stumbled backwards in horror. They knew right away that this was no hunter, and they also knew it had to be much MUCH worse than a car accident. For 100s more stories like this one, check out our main YouTube channel just called "MrBallen" -- https://www.youtube.com/c/MrBallenIf you want to reach out to me, contact me on Instagram, Twitter or any other major social media platform, my username on all of them is @MrBallenSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
