Derek Hess is an internationally acclaimed artist with works permanently displayed at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Louvre in Paris. His work explores dark and intense themes that have made him a favorite in tattoo parlors worldwide and a beloved creator of show fliers, posters and fine art for bands like Green Day, the Melvins, Pearl Jam, Pink Floyd, and Sepultura, among others. His work launched Strhess Apparel line, and was spun off into a traveling music festival. The 2014 documentary film Forced Perspective documented his struggles with bipolar disorder and alcoholism, and he founded the Acting Out! group to spread awareness of mental health issues among creative people across all disciplines.Derek joins the show to discuss an album by one of the great metal bands of all time. Black Sabbath released “Sabotage” in 1975 in the midst of a legal battle with their former managers, and is known as much for its infamous album cover as it is for its mix of heavy rockers and experimental songs, including “Hole In The Sky,” “Symptom of the Universe,” and “The Writ.” The album has been dubbed as the final installment of “the legendary six” records first released by the band, and is consistently listed as one of the greatest metal records of all time. Derek Hess is a self-described “superhero and overrated artist” and a mental health advocate. His work has been featured on album covers, installations in the Louvre, human skin, comic books, and the walls of Jimi Izrael's home. I kick things off with an apology, then we get into his Atomic Punk days: dysfunctional underage drinking communities, the best drugs for a 10-year bender, why his first time dropping acid was the best day of high school he ever had, and sharing his struggles with alcoholism and bipolar disorder in a documentary. Then we shift to his lifelong history as an artist, how relationships factor into the art equation, creating shit that will outlive you, and the never-solved heist of his Captain America comic covers. In part two of my discussion with Derek Hess, we discuss his process for creating his art, from inspiration to putting lead and ink to paper, to printing. For more than 30 years, Derek has created art that has elevated musicians and music scenes, brought awareness to mental illness, and evoked, sometimes uncomfortably, emotions in the people the experience it across the globe. There is something that drives great artists in a direction that they can call their own. It's a niche that somehow draws the person experiencing the art into an emotional state in very specific and personal ways. But very few artists have taken this gift and applied it to create things greater than the art itself. That's what our guest, Derek Hess, has done. Derek is a prolific artist that has played in a key role in building movements in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio, and across the globe. We'll explore his journey from frying wings in the basement of the Euclid Tavern, to playing a key role in the resurgence of the rock poster art scene in the early '90s, to providing a platform and safe space for people, like himself, to share their experience living with mental illness. Another legend on this week! Derek Hess! We talk about all kinds of things including his (highly recommended) documentary "Forced Perspective", his take on "dark art", his loose style, his art teachers, how he got into creating rock posters, mental health and tons more. This is one of those conversations that we both forgot was being recorded so there is lots of interesting chit chat. Also- Derek was unable to get Skype to work for him so I had to record his interview on the phone using a phone call recording app. Audio quality is not great but the dialogue is still very clear and easy to hear. Also a quick art life update, new subscribers and my lucid dream story. In this classic episode of RTO, comedian Brandt Tobler sat in Gooch, Bobby, and Pete and Gooch got the chance to talk with one of his favorite artist, Derek Hess.
Derek Hess is my guest this week. Derek is known for a plethora of reasons, be it doing art for numerous bands album art (In Flames, Sevendust, Matchbook Romance), concert posters, being the founder of a clothing line, Strhess Clothing, all of which centers around his art. Mr. Hess just put out a book, 31 Days in May: A Visual Journal of Mental Health and Addiction, and is currently embarking on a tour to promote it. We talk about how this book got started, and how frustrating it can be to be connected to so many through the powers of social media, while being entirely disconnected at the same time. We also delve into some of imagery Derek uses frequently and find out why, and talk a bit about music and some of the newer bands Derek's been into.
