Metal Debate Album Review - The Tide Of Death And Fractured Dreams (Ingested)

The Great Metal Debate Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 31, 2024 7:25

Welcome back to the Metal Debate podcast, breaking down the new release from British metallers Ingested titled The Tide Of Death And Fractured Dreams. The album begins with “Paragon Of Purity.” This song is exceptionally tight and focused, with the band unleashing a healthy helping of slam riffs, but also an outstanding reoccurring melodic guitar lead which, two-thirds of the way through, morphs into an intense solo. The song closes in violent fashion with a rolling breakdown and vocalist Evans exploding in a cascade of demonic spit-growling. Track two, “Endless Machine,” is a mid-tempo number in the classic slam vein, although it wanders toward tech death territory as it progresses. “Where No Light Shines” has an eerie synth overlay that creates a simple but effective basis for the song's melody, with the guitar later replicating the synth. It's a great example of how to seamlessly integrate the death and slam approach. I absolutely love the atmosphere that's created - just smart, considered songwriting. Probably my fav track on the album. Next up we hear the brutal harmonization of “Starve The Fire.” Evans pulls out nearly every vocal tool in his arsenal, with growls, screams, vocal fry, pig squeals, and rock singing. Guitarist Sean Hynes stays in a support role on this one laying a heavy foundation on guitar with mostly slam riffs and eschewing any lead break. Unfortunately, and despite some memorable lyrics and melody, “Starve The Fire” didn't seem to be building to anything as an overall composition, and then it just kind of ended awkwardly. On “Expect To Fail” we have plenty of brutality but also the addition of clean vocals performed by Josh Middleton of Sylosis. It's another mid-paced track, with Jeffs occasionally revving the engine, but mostly the band taking a moderate, meandering approach throughout. Mid-way through this ten-track album comes a twist with an instrumental number called “Numinous.” This one is splendid with gorgeous melodic lead and outstanding backing orchestration. When I first heard this, I thought I had inadvertently started playing some Insomnium, because you get a lot of the same ambience here. In truth, there are hints of that melodic death vibe – albeit with different riffing style – throughout The Tide Of Death And Fractured Dreams. Track seven is “In Nothingness,” a fairly straight-ahead composition, mid-paced, with another guest vocal appearance, this time from Mark Hunter of northern Ohio groove-core act Chimaira. The pairing is an interesting one – not what I would have anticipated – and while there is some appeal to the versing structure, the differential created between singers didn't quite work for me. The energy gets kicked up a notch on “Pantheon” with more slam riffs and pig squeals if you are in the mood for ‘em, as well as classic breakdowns toward the end. Yet still, if you listen carefully, there's some melodic elements below the surface, and even a bit of catchiness in the versing. Nothing commercial in any sense, but definitely catchy. Equal in brutality to any other track on the album, but also with a quasi-epic metal feel to it - is “Kingdoms Of Sand.” Somewhat tech-deathy in its precision, at this point you'll have to have come to appreciate the sophistication of Hynes as a guitarist and composer. The album's closer “A Path Once Lost” spends its first few stanzas with undistorted guitar and emotive, melancholic singing from Evans. Further in we get some overlapping cleans and growls. The contrast in sound was great, but the lyrical pacing seemed off. A decent track overall, but not among the strongest in my opinion. This album is excellent, although admittedly there were a few tracks that didn't quite resonate for me. I'm giving The Tide Of Death And Fractured Dreams a strong 8 out of ten rating. You can purchase the album digitally and in a variety of physical formats through metalblade.com or wherever you buy music.

Interview by Kris PetersManchester death metal outfit Ingested are the gift that keeps on giving.Since their 2020 album Where Only God May Tread, the three-piece masters of metal have released roughly one album per year, culminating in The Tide Of Death And Fractured Dreams which will be unleashed via Metal Blade Records on April 5.Following the bleak firestorm that was Ashes Lie Still, Ingested have produced a more upbeat body of work that more reflects where the band are at personally in their lives.Never afraid to experiment within and beyond their genre, Ingested thread a myriad of subtleties through each new release, allowing themselves to explore different sonic plains while still remaining true to their core. It is an approach that has seen the band rise rapidly through the ranks and should see them ascend even further with The Tide Of Death And Fractured Dreams. The band produced the album themselves with the guidance of recording engineer Nico Beninato, further expanding their musical horizons, with guest appearances from Chimaira's Mark Hunter and Sylosis' Josh Middleton enhancing the finished product.Vocalist Jason Evans joined HEAVY to tell us more."We've been sitting on this album for well over a year now," he began. "We released our last album Ashes Lie Still in November 2022 and then four weeks after that album was released, in December 2022, we went into the studio and recorded The Tide Of Death And Fractured Dreams, so we've had this album done and dusted for well over a year. The way that we like to work is we like to work ahead, because we're always writing. So when an album's done, it's done. Let's just get in there, get in the studio, get it recorded, then what we're doing then is we're giving ourselves time to really prepare for the announcement and release of the album. So we've had a year to make sure the artwork looks amazing, make sure the music videos are all looking great, so that's how we like to work. We'd rather give ourselves the time to make sure everything's exactly how we want it to be for the presentation of the album so when it does get announced and people know that it's coming, everything is ready. We don't like rushing around. We like it done. I'm excited to finally announce to everyone that it exists and that it's coming out. We don't have to wait that long, but in the meantime we've just released the first single, Paragon Of Purity, with a music video. That's doing really well. All our fans seem to love it, and then we've got more. We've got more coming out in the run-up to the album's release and probably beyond the release as well. We've got loads of stuff coming. We've just announced a headline tour through the UK and Europe, which runs through April and May. We're taking out Fallujah and Vulvodynia, so I'm excited. It's gonna be yet another busy year for us."In the full interview, Jason talks more about The Tide Of Death And Fractured Dreams and what to expect, what Ingested were going for musically, what things the band experimented with, the two guest artists on the album and what they each brought to their song, the process of producing and the benefits to the band of knowing how, their release process and how the band harnesses its creativity, fans reactions to such frequent releases, how much musical growth Ingested have in them and more.HEAVY would like to thank our sponsor RODE. Chimaira was an American heavy metal band from Cleveland, Ohio. Formed in August 1998, the group was a member of the New Wave of American Heavy Metal scene. The band's name is derived from the word Chimera, a monstrous creature in Greek mythology. Throughout its history, the band had numerous line-up changes, leaving vocalist Mark Hunter as the only constant member. The band dissolved in 2014 but announced a one-off reunion in late 2017 wherein most of the group's longtime members rejoined. Chimaira and director Nick Cavalier released the documentary Down Again in 2018, in which Hunter shares his struggle with bipolar disorder as well as his interest in photography. Hunter was diagnosed with thyroid cancer but is now in remission after a full thyroidectomy.   B.S. Over A Couple Of Brews   Episode 2 - "Lofi Nofi"   Episode Summary:   Come join Rick-O and Korbs, and B.S. over a couple of brews. Tonight we discuss our favorite types of beer, some crazy concert experiences, and the music we both have been listening to lately. Rick-O's wireless mouse miraculously still works, so that's pretty cool. Cheers to good fortune, and also to remembrance!     The Brews: Rick-O's Brew: "Undead Party Crasher (Imperial Stout)" (Brewed by Clown Shoes)(Boston, MA) Korbs' Brew: "Sticky Situation Cinnamon Bun Stout" (Brewed by Legal Remedy Brewing Co.)(Rockhill, SC) Rick-O's Favorite Beer Styles: Stouts are my favorite. I mostly enjoy them for the rich flavor, and a lot of them tend to have hints of coffee. My second favorite type of beer is Porters, because there are a lot of coffee related porters out there. (Starting to see a pattern, here? Lol.) Lastly, I enjoy some sour beers, as long as they don't taste like straight-up stomach bile. I like the fruity sours, mostly. Korbs' Favorite Beer Styles: Porters Stouts Sours and Gose Beers, because they're a little bit lighter and don't make me feel like shit. Crazy Concert Experiences: Rick-O and Korbs went to a Lamb of God show at the LC Pavilion, in Columbus, OH. The venue is modelled after the House of Blues. The guy leaning over the rail of the upper balcony fell over the rail, and ended up falling 15 or 20 feet down on top of another concert goer pretty much shoulder to shoulder. Korbs went to the (3-9-2005) Lamb of God, Slipknot, and Shadow's Fall Show, at CSU Convocation Center in Cleveland, OH. Some guy with a compound leg fracture, had to be carried out of the pit and off the floor by a friend. Can't remember which show it was at The Foundry, but I had some random guy that was trying to talk to me right in the middle of a song that was real heavy. He tried to grab me around the back of my head to pull me towards him. I pushed him away, and when he came back towards me I picked him up and threw him into the middle of the pit. Then, the guy stood up and started making weird "Karate gestures". Everyone avoided the guy. I'm pretty sure the dude was on PCP or something. Lol. In 2017, Korbs went to a Decibel Magazine Festival. Pig Destroyer and Sleep were the headliners. Some dude was so high that he crumpled a full cup of water without spilling any, and tried to stick it in his back pocket. Dude did not spill a single drop. On 10-10-2011, a major fight broke out during the Chimaira show at The Outpost, in Kent, OH. Pretty sure it was Revocation and Impending Doom that were also on that bill. Andols was not playing drums with Chimaira at that time. It was Chimaira's last show of their Age of Hell album cycle. Korbs saw Ex-Chimaira Rhythm Guitarist, Matt DeVries, years later at an Unearth and Whitechapel concert in Chicago. Matt DeVries was playing guitar for Unearth. Korbs asked DeVries if he remembered that Outpost show, and he actually did.

Sean Zatorsky of DAATH, Chimaira and a slew of other bands joins me for this wild chat as we talk about my favorite city in Atlanta, and how I love the melting pot of cultures there and how it comes out in the music of the area as well, and how it has informed him as a musician since living there over the last 20 years. We also get into some heavy topics, such as how American culture seemingly does away with any of it's past in favor of "new" and "better" while other countries seem to take pride in it's rich history, but maybe that too is a detriment to it's people as well. We go deep into talking about supernatural things, which lead us to talking about some real life shit that we were both dealing with, and how our relationship was really started over me reaching out to him after the passing of his close friend and bandmate Joey Jordison. Tune in to find out which one!  If you had told 15 year old me that one day I'd be chatting about horror movies with my favorite metal singer I wouldn't have believed it, but here we are. Man, life is weird! I hope you enjoy this episode because I enjoyed the hell out of recording it!
