It's the time of year for reflection and I've been thinking a lot on how far we've come with this podcast since we started it almost four years ago - millions of listens, some big awards and nominations, and a lot of friends made along the way. And it's all thanks to you for being a loyal listener and supporting us along the way. So I thought it would be fitting for this week's episode to go right back to the very start and revisit my very first interview on this series, with the great Ian Dempsey of Today FM. Having shared a radio studio with Ian for well over 20 years, there was no one better to send me off into this brave new world of podcasting, knapsack on my back, excitement and trepidation in my heart. You might have heard interviews with Ireland's most-loved breakfast show presenter before, but you haven't heard one quite like this. Ian reveals things about himself that even I didn't know – like why he would never, ever get a massage; his desire to be able to drop an F-Bomb on the radio, his memories of the infamous Fr Joseph Marmion, and the real reason for his obsession with David Bowie. He even blew me away with his impressions of Paschal Donohoe, Joan Burton, Matt Cooper and many more! Produced by: Patrick Haughey, AudioBrand.

TW: miscarriage This week, brace yourself for A TOTAL ECLIPSE… of all other podcast episodes, because this one's a total banger. I could not have asked for a more open, hilarious, moving or riveting encounter than with the formidable Bonnie Tyler. She grew up in a working-class Welsh family and answered a newspaper ad for a backing singer when she was 17. From there, she went on to be one of the most iconic recording artists of all time. Her hit singles include It's A Heartache, Holding Out for a Hero and, of course, Total Eclipse of the Heart. At 72, Bonnie is still hard at work, and managed to squeeze in an hour on How to Fail between gigs and the release of her new album, In Berlin. It's also her first ever podcast interview. You might want to bring the tissues for this one, as we have a bit of a weep when Bonnie talks about losing her amazing mum.  We also touch on miscarriage and a childfree life. Plus: Bonnie's failure at elocution lessons, the fascinating story behind her friendship with Tina Turner, performing for Putin (no, really), being a bit of a hoarder and the secret to a 50-year marriage. As always, I'd LOVE to hear about your failures. Every week, my guest and I choose a selection to read out and answer on our special subscription offering, Failing with Friends. We'll endeavour to give you advice, wisdom, some laughs and much, much more. Have something to share of your own? I'd love to hear from you! Steven Bartlett's First Ever Podcast Interview

Screw it, Just Do it

This was the very first podcast interview for Steven Bartlett. You'll know him as host of The Diary of a CEO podcast, as the youngest investor on BBC TV's Dragons Den 2024, and as a successful entrepreneur. It was also the very first interview I recorded as host of this podcast some seven years ago. You'll hear from a 23-year-old Steven who talks about starting his first business at 12 by selling cigarettes at school, not receiving Christmas or Birthday presents from his parents, and dropping out of University after just one lecture. He also offers his advice to aspiring entrepreneurs and tells us the number one skill all entrepreneurs need to master. We recorded our conversation via audio only back in 2017, so we have added video to this podcast and tried to enhance the audio - he's speaking to me on his phone! At the time Steven was CEO at Social Chain and had yet to start his podcast, yet to chat about 'my first million', but instead talks about his reading vlog and influencer marketing. The happy sexy millionaire Steven Bartlett's dragon's den journey had yet to begin. You can now of course hear him helping young entrepreneurs on a dragons den full episode. I hope you enjoy this episode as we celebrate seven years since I started Screw It Just DO It. If you've only just discovered my show on YouTube, there are 539 episodes over on Apple and Spotify (links below). Whether you've been listening since 2017 or just discovering my show now, I thank you for your support. This show means the world to me, and I love bringing interesting people to inspire and educate and ultimately help you get from where you are, to where you want to be. If you're able to subscribe to my show it makes a huge difference, and if you're able to tell just one other person about it, it will help me in my mission to impact more people. Let me know what you thought of Steven's (and my) first interviews in the comments below.
