Rerun: Charles Dickens' novella ‘A Christmas Carol' was written in just six weeks, and published on 19th December, 1843. The timeless story, which introduced the world to Ebeneezer Scrooge, Tiny Tim, and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future, was conceived in part to get its author out of a sticky financial situation. Dickens' other motive was to put into an accessible fable the political ideas that had formed the core of his proposed pamphlet, ‘An Appeal to the People of England on behalf of the Poor Man's Child'. In so doing, he re-focussed the Christmas message around charitable giving and kindness for generations.  In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how Dickens plundered his own back-catalogue to surface some ‘Christmas goblins'; consider whether the book-buying public truly understood the intended message of his work; and reveal why his determination to produce it in an affordable edition hit him in the pocket…  Further Reading: • ‘A Christmas Carol: The True History Behind the Dickens Story' (Time, 2021): https://time.com/4597964/history-charles-dickens-christmas-carol/ • ‘How did A Christmas Carol come to be?' In Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" Ebeneezer Scrooge is described as a self-absorbed old miser who lives only for himself. He is devoid of any community and, in this brief life, lives only for the gain and preservation of things non-eternal with blinders on to suffering humanity all around him. This is the same description Jesus gives of the rich man in the Parable of the Rich Man & Lazarus. Both Scrooge and the rich man were on a collision course with an eternal fate that no one would desire. Today we look at how Scrooge was brought to beautiful tears of repentance which freed him to become love and be enabled to receive love in one of the most beautiful descriptions of the transformation of a very broken person. There is a little of Scrooge and the rich man in each of us, how might we come to enjoy the fullness of life that is only found in becoming the love of God for those around us?

Ebeneezer Scrooge had nothing on a man named Charles Henry. Charles was miserly, and cruel. No doubt he had a long list of people who could've been accused of wanting him dead. *** When it comes to B-movie horror, you can't do much better than the 1958 classic “The Blob”. But don't believe it's just science fiction – reports have been coming for years of people in real life actually coming across some type of amorphous creatures very similar to what was originally seen on the big screen. *** The Conjuring, The Amityville Horror, Annabelle, and many other books and films have been based on Ed and Lorraine Warren and the stories they tell. But it appears they may not be as advertised. If fact, they've been shown to be fraudulent on more than one occasion. *** Whether or not you believe in curses, luck, or fate it may be hard to explain away some of the eerie items people have had in their keeping, only to get rid of them as quickly as possible for fear of suffering more calamities. *** A woman describes her home as a child as evil – even on sunny days, the gloom would overtake her. *** In an old cemetery in North Carolina, a young girl is buried – but not in a coffin as you might expect. She was buried while submerged in a keg of rum.SOURCES AND REFERENCES FROM THE EPISODE…“Miser Henry's Murder” by Robert Wilhelm for Murder By Gaslight: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/bdhek2cw“Unlucky Possessions” by T.C. A Christmas Carol was the first Christmas story I tackled when I started the podcast back in 2007. I think most every actor would love to be involved in a production of A Christmas Carol, and I was no different.  11 years later, in 2018, when I saw how much I had grown as a narrator, and also how much my studio had improved, I decided to record this one again. This recording is the 2018 version, available in the anthology, The Christmas Stories of Charles Dickens. How Big Are Your Barns? In Luke chapter 12, Jesus shared the Parable of the Rich Fool. Jesus' message in that parable is every bit as important for us today as the day it was first told. We'll talk about it today on Faith and Finance. Let's start with the first part of the parable, Luke 12:16-19. That's where Jesus says, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?'And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.”Now, a lot of people might read that and think, “Hey, that sounds like a solid, practical solution. You've got too much stuff coming in. If your barns aren't big enough, you need bigger barns! What's wrong with that?”Well, the rich man finds out what's wrong in the next two verses. They read, “But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?' So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”If that theme sounds familiar to you, there's a good reason. Charles Dickens no doubt borrowed it when he wrote A Christmas Carol. Of course there, Ebeneezer Scrooge takes on the role of the rich fool, obsessed with money and possessions. But unlike the Rich Fool, Ol' Ebeneezer gets a second chance. And so do we.Our second chance starts with understanding what “rich toward God” means. It's an unusual phrase and God's Word doesn't elaborate on it, but we can get an idea of its meaning by contrast. It's the opposite of building bigger barns or laying up earthly treasure for yourself.Being rich toward God is acknowledging that we're made for Him, not for our own pleasure or possessions. Our abundance is in Him, not our bank accounts.“Rich toward God” means counting Him as greater riches than anything on the earth. And it means using earthly riches to show how much we value God. How do we do that? By giving generously to His Kingdom. Had the Rich Fool done that, he might have heard these words from Matthew 25:“Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me … I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me … as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers … you did it to me.”But the Rich Fool did none of that. He thought only of himself and when he died, he left his earthly treasure behind. Now, Jesus is not saying that our works save us, but He is saying that not doing the good works we were designed for will hurt our relationship with God. Jesus is teaching that money and possessions are dangerous because they can lure us out of love for God and keep us from treasuring Him.Because of that, some might think that money is bad, but it's not. It's really a powerful tool that can be used for good or bad. While the proper use of money can store up treasure in heaven for you, the improper use of money can be hazardous to your spiritual health as it was in the case of the Rich Fool. The problem wasn't that he became rich, the rich are no less godly than the poor. The problem was that the Rich Fool ceased to view God as his supreme treasure. If God had been his treasure, he might have said:“God, this is all yours. You have made my fields prosper. Show me how to express with my riches that You are my treasure and that riches are not. I already have enough. I don't need more luxury and leisure.Had he said that, the Rich Man wouldn't have been a fool at all. He would have been a very wise man who was rich toward God. He would have discovered that— as Jesus is quoted in Acts 20:35— “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”The Rich Fool learned that the hard way, but we don't have to. We can learn from his mistake and strive to be rich toward God.On today's program, Rob also answers listener questions: If someone else is paying a home mortgage, but the house is in your name, what's the best way to remove yourself from the equation and put the home in their name? When is it appropriate to move away from conservative investments like bonds and invest a little more aggressively? Is it wise to open several new accounts in the name of a trust? What financing options should you consider when buying a business franchise? How do you determine what to do with a 401k established with a company you no longer work for?Remember, you can call in to ask your questions most days at (800) 525-7000. Catherine Glynn is artistic director of Audacious Raw Theater in Lanesboro. She was able to see a preview of the play that opens Commonweal Theatre's 35th season: “Bernhardt/Hamlet” by Theresa Rebeck. Glynn calls the play “a love letter to the theater and the art of collaboration.” The play is a work of historical fiction about actress Sarah Bernhardt, who was wildly celebrated in her time. Set in Paris in 1899, when Bernhardt's theater has become riddled by debt. In order to save it, she decides to play the lead role in “Hamlet.” All of Paris is up-in-arms over whether she can pull off a “pants role.” Bernhardt herself is daunted by Shakespeare's language. Glynn notes that this a perfect show to cap off Women's History Month, having been written, directed, costumed and sound-designed by women. Glynn says that the role of the famous actress is beautifully played by Commonweal company member Adrienne Sweeney, who herself is no stranger to playing roles originally written for men. Sweeney played Ebeneezer Scrooge in the theater's staging of “A Christmas Carol” in 2021. After final preview performances tonight and Friday, the show opens April 1 and runs through June 24. George Roberts, artistic director of Homewood Studios, recently attended the opening of a gallery exhibit at the new, nearby Northside Artspace Lofts. The building was designed as an affordable space for artists to live and work, complete with dance space and gallery. Roberts said he appreciated the variety of works in that gallery show, which is titled “Works in Progress.” The exhibit “speaks about supporting young and new artists to have a space to show their work. And it speaks about a place where more accomplished mid-career artists have a place to act as mentors,” says Roberts, adding that beginning works that “show promise” were happily positioned next to accomplished, finished works.  The exhibit “Works in Progress” is on view through May 7. Roberts notes that, since the building is also residential, the doors are locked. But if you ring the doorbell to enter, the gallery is accessible and easy to find. Educator and art lover Kris Prince of Minneapolis plans to be at the Sundin Music Hall Friday evening to hear the Minneapolis Guitar Quartet perform in St. Paul.  Prince calls the quartet “wonderful, entertaining” performers, and she loves the range of styles and sounds the four produce with their guitars. Their upcoming series of performances includes music from Spain, Finland and Macedonia; new arrangements of music by Bob Dylan, Nick Drake and Japanese jazz composer Hiromi Uehara. They will also perform a new, commissioned work by Twin Cities composer A.J. Isaacson-Zvidzwa. In addition to Friday evening's concert, founder Joseph Hagedorn, Maja Radovanlija, Ben Kunkel and Milena Petković will kick off a series of performances this spring. The Minneapolis Guitar Quartet will perform Sunday, April 2, at the Walker Community UMC; Thursday, April 13 at the White Bear Center for the Arts; and Saturday, April 29 at the Heart of the City Music Factory in Anoka.

Charles Dickens' novella ‘A Christmas Carol' was written in just six weeks, and published on 19th December, 1843. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how Dickens plundered his own back-catalogue to surface some ‘Christmas goblins'; consider whether the book-buying public truly understood the intended message of his work; and reveal why his determination to produce it in an affordable edition hit him in the pocket…  Further Reading: • ‘A Christmas Carol: The True History Behind the Dickens Story' (Time, 2021): https://time.com/4597964/history-charles-dickens-christmas-carol/ • ‘How did A Christmas Carol come to be?' When it comes to you and your business with regards to growth, there seems to be two equal but wildly different camps that folks will settle into - like "A Tale of Two Cities" or the twins from "The Parent Trap" movies (Hayley Mills or Lindsay Lohan, take your pick). Either you get way too excited (think that episode of Saved By the Bell with Jessie Spano and the caffeine pills) and you buy up equipment or hire personnel you think you need without the revenue backing and true growth to support it ... or you're the micromanaging money miser (think Ebeneezer Scrooge pre ghostly visits) that has the money and the numbers to back up growth, but you're reluctant to pull the trigger and you stunt your growth due to lack of support. It seems like a no-win scenario no matter what, like you're a Starfleet captain facing the Kobayashi Maru training exercise. And, not unlike a young Captain James Tiberius Kirk, our boys Sid and Keith here at The Overlap Podcast are going to hack the scenario and find a way for you and your company to win. Elizabeth Gaskell had only written one novel when Charles Dickens started publishing her work in his journal Household Words. But soon she would become famous as the author of Cranford and North and South, two of the best novels of the Victorian era. Dickens proved to be a generous and artist-friendly editor, offering suggestions but allowing Gaskell to have the final say over her work (with one exception). In this episode, Jacke looks at the ghost story that Dickens asked Gaskell to write, along with the alternative ending that Dickens first suggested and then wrote for her consideration. *** When it comes to B-movie horror, you can't do much better than the 1958 classic “The Blob”. But don't believe it's just science fiction – reports have been coming for years of people in real life actually coming across some type of amorphous creatures very similar to what was originally seen on the big screen. *** In an old cemetery in North Carolina, a young girl is buried – but not in a coffin as you might expect. She was buried while submerged in a keg of rum. *** Ebeneezer Scrooge had nothing on a man named Charles Henry. Charles was miserly, and cruel. No doubt he had a long list of people who could've been accused of wanting him dead.SOURCES AND ESSENTIAL WEB LINKS…“Miser Henry's Murder” by Robert Wilhelm: https://tinyurl.com/ybtbb3fb “Unlucky Possessions” by T.C.
