Send us a textEver feel like Halloween says more about us than the costumes do? We kick off with a quick platform cleanup and jump straight into a lively Halloween special full of laughter, strong opinions, and the kinds of stories that stick. From a spoiler-light take on Shelby Oaks to a rapid-fire tour of modern horror—The Nun, La Llorona, The Boogeyman, Evil Dead Rise, and even animated gateway chills like Monster House—we compare what scares us on screen to what unsettles us in real life. The candy segment turns into its own saga. Pillowcases reign as the ultimate trick-or-treat bag. Reese's Cups take the crown, while Starburst, Skittles, Kit Kat, and Twix battle for runner-up. Candy corn catches strays, black licorice splits the room, and boutique sweets like Ferrero Rocher and Lindor get side-eye for being pricey but undeniably good. We trade memories of the “parent tax,” freezer stashes, and the trades that defined our childhood Halloween economy.Things get real on the curb. One of us becomes the “get off my yard” neighbor after kids shortcut across a corner-lot rockscape, which sparks a talk about respect, boundaries, and how we teach community norms. We also rethink trick-or-treat etiquette: full costumes versus teens with empty bags, and why a little grace can keep kids safe and included. Between fast-food detours—Wendy's spicy nuggets, KFC honey barbecue wings, and a PSA against a regrettable steak nugget—we find the throughline: Halloween blends nostalgia, humor, and the rules we live by when no one's watching.Hit play for an honest, funny, and surprisingly thoughtful ride through horror picks, candy rankings, and neighborhood ethics. If you smile, nod, or yell at your phone at least once, share the episode with a friend, subscribe, and drop your top three candies in a review. We're ready to argue with you in the best way. Thanks for listening to the Nobody's Talking Podcast. It's that time again! It's October. The sun goes down in the afternoon now. Night has a chill. And at CVS and Walgreens, they are already putting up the Christmas decorations. That's right, it's Halloween. But none of that for us! We are firmly planted in autumn. As Ray Bradbury once wrote, “Something, something, something, autumn something.” By Ray Bradbury. We have enough show here to stuff your pillowcase, so grab a bag of candy and settle back. Howard Berger and Marshall Julius are here to discuss their new book, Making Monsters, inside stories from the creators of Hollywood's most iconic creatures. This is a terrific book, basically it's a high school yearbook for professional monster kids. Rick Baker, Tom Savini, Michael Giacchino, Larry Karaszewski, Ve Neill, Richard Edlund, Derek Mears, Bill Corso, David Dastmalchian, Mick Garris, Mike Mendez. The list goes on and on and on. Monster kids who grew up but never put it away, and followed their passions right into show business. Packed with photos and interviews, it's really a terrific piece. Making Monsters, by Howard Berger. The Academy Award winning make up artist, he is the B in KNB FX and Marshall Julius, author and film critic and - get this – he's British. He's from the United States of Britain. Daren Docterman is also here. Daren is an illustrator and set designer, he's worked on The Abyss, Monster House, Master and Commander, he was the VFX supervisor on the director's cut of Star Trek - The Motion Picture. He, along with Mark Altman and Ashley Miller, make up The Inglourious Trexperts. Check out that podcast. And, like Howard Berger and Marshall Julius. He's a pal. We've had meals. Quite a few. Daren Dochterman. True Tales From Weirdsville takes a deep dive into American International Pictures and it's genre output in the '50s and '60s. It gave us Roger Corman, It Conquered The World, Invasion Of The Saucer Men, The Amazing Colossal Man, I Was a Teenage Werewolf. And then it segued into the '60s with the Vincent Price / Edgar Allen Poe films like The House Of Usher, The Pit and The Pendulum, and so and and so forth. And then, as a Halloween bonus, we're going to go back into the archives and present you the True Tales we did on Orson Welles' War Of The Worlds broadcast. It's all here. It's all for you. And now, I can hear the kids at the door, and so it is on to our filthy business.

Who's ready for Rear Window Jr.? This week the siblings unpack another old spooky favorite, Monster House (2006). Ever wondered the tortured backstory of the miserable old crank in the neighborhood who shakes his fists as he demands the children "stay off his lawn!"---well here it is. Carie draws some ominous paralells between today's plot and that of another suburban horror starring a dancing clown...Ross refuses to get over the fact that not a single adult ever witnesses this house acting sus, and the siblings remind themselves that the things that seem scariest are often just lonely and in need of support.  SUPPORT US ON PATREON!

Collin and Kerry correct a mistake from last year by focusing on a movie that actually does take place during Halloween. Christine Sellin returns to talk about "Monster House," a subversive and hilarious animated from from 2006 that sneaks up on the viewer with a poignant story of love that durns dark and foreboding when you look back on it. Is this the best of the motion-capture animated films of this era? How does the animation hold up today? What was trick-or-treating like when you were a kid? Has it changed over the years?  All this, plus a Blu-ray Gift Exchange segment for both dog and cat lovers (and lion lovers, too). We're back to our usual programming over at Ramblin: An Amblin Podcast, and this time we're taking a precarious walk over old Nebbercracker's front lawn to cautiously enter MONSTER HOUSE, Gil Kenan's 2006 feature film debut and the second of the Robert Zemeckis-produced motion capture animations. Because we're a-scared, though, we can't do it alone, so we've enlisted the help of all-time great sister Sophie Glenn to complete our trio. Together we discuss childhood memories, re-litigate tales of old ladies in the woods and reminisce about the Disney Channel in the mid-noughties. We also find that we have way more to say about this weird, quasi-forgotten little throwback movie than anybody could have reasonably thought. PUBLIC VERSION. Writer/director Gil Kenan (MONSTER HOUSE, GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE, SATURDAY NIGHT) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to share his incredible career journey. From how the devastating 1994 Northridge earthquake changed his path from the theater to the cinema… to working with both Zemeckis AND Spielberg on creating the animated classic MONSTER HOUSE… to his fateful meeting with fellow filmmaker Jason Reitman and the incredible creative partnership that followed… to the importance of accessing truth even when working with established IPs like SNL and GHOSTBUSTERS… to surviving the “beautiful disaster” that was CITY OF EMBER and the sad truth about how IMPRACTICAL JOKERS and VICTOR CROWLEY star Brian Quinn ALMOST made it into GHOST BUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE… Gil's story is legendary! Seriously, what other filmmaker got to direct the latest adventure by the Ghostbusters AND write the definitive film on the making of Saturday Night Live all in one year?!

We're amused by the premature arrival of Christmas music and memes, but our real focus is on the mysterious Michael Myers in "Halloween 4," the chillingly creative "Hell House LLC," and the animated eeriness of "Monster House." As an added treat, brace yourself for our upcoming interview with esteemed actor Peter Jacobson, who'll share insights from his roles in "House," "Fear the Walking Dead," and "Ahsoka."Get ready to reminisce about the dark allure of "The Crow" with its 90s grit and the whimsical world of "Halloween Town," where family-friendly fantasy meets Halloween magic. We explore the chilling appeal of Stephen King's "Silver Bullet" and its vintage non-CGI werewolf effects. Our conversation threads its way through the horror genre's varied tones, from supernatural fright to nostalgic charm, ensuring a diverse cinematic journey that celebrates Halloween in all its forms. Our nostalgic journey doesn't stop with films; we recall the rebellious days of playing "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" with its unforgettable 80s vibe. We also share thoughts on the "Salem's Lot" remake and indulge in some TV talk with insights on "Suits" and the "Mr. McMahon" documentary. As the Karen Read murder trial progresses into its eighth day at Norfolk Superior Court in Dedham, new testimonies are shedding light on the intricate details of the night Boston police officer John O'Keefe was found dead. On Thursday, close acquaintances of both Read and O'Keefe, including Chris and Julie Albert, provided crucial insights into the events surrounding O'Keefe's untimely death during a blizzard in January 2022. Karen Read, 44, of Mansfield, faces second-degree murder charges in a case that has captivated public attention due to its dramatic developments and complex witness dynamics. The Alberts, residents of Canton and neighbors to O'Keefe, were among the last to see the couple before O'Keefe's body was discovered near the Albert family home. During her testimony, Julie Albert addressed the defense's allegations of her frequent communications with Trooper Michael Proctor's sister, Courtney, who is also a friend of Julie. Despite admitting to the numerous calls, Julie Albert insisted these interactions were unrelated to the ongoing investigation of Read. “I don't deny it but I don't remember the exact amount,” Julie responded when pressed about the 67 calls documented between her and Courtney Proctor. AUDIO: Julie Albert and Courtney Proctor PHONE CALLS mp3 Chris Albert, brother to Brian Albert whose house became the scene of O'Keefe's discovery, described his long-standing acquaintance with Trooper Proctor. He clarified that their interactions were casual and not influenced by the investigation. Chris's testimony revealed that he and his wife did not visit Brian's home the night O'Keefe died but confirmed their presence earlier in the evening at the Waterfall bar in Canton with the deceased and Read. Interestingly, Albert shared a lighter note, mentioning they humorously referred to O'Keefe as “Mr. Nebbercracker,” likening him to the curmudgeonly character from the animated film "Monster House," due to his aversion to people on his lawn.  AUDIO: READ-CHRIS ALBERT GET OFF MY LAWN The defense aimed to underline potential conflicts of interest and biases in the testimonies provided by the Alberts. They highlighted the frequent contacts between Julie Albert and Courtney Proctor as possibly undermining the integrity of the investigation. Defense attorney David Yannetti focused on exposing these links to challenge the credibility of the testimonies, which are critical to establishing a timeline of events leading to O'Keefe's death. As the trial continues, the defense is expected to delve deeper into the connections between the witnesses and law enforcement, potentially influencing the jury's perception of the testimonies' reliability. The court adjourned with expectations to resume scrutinizing the intricate details of the case, including the handling of evidence and further witness testimonies. The trial is set to continue, with the community and media closely watching as more details unfold about the night John O'Keefe died and whether Karen Read's actions led to his demise. The complexities of the case promise more twists as both sides present further evidence and testimonies. #KarenRead #JohnOKeefe #ChrisAlbert #JulieAlbert #MichaelProctor #MurderTrial #NorfolkSuperiorCourt Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE?
