Classic Debate: Ian Fleming vs John le Carré

Intelligence Squared

They are the titans of the spy novel, who have elevated thrillers to the level of literary fiction. Much imitated, much adapted by the big and small screens, Ian Fleming and John Le Carré have painted our picture of post-war espionage: Fleming through the dashing figure of James Bond, with his lush locations and Martinis as icy as his heart; Le Carré through his damning portrait of the British secret service drawn from his own time in MI5 and MI6. But which of the two novelists is the greater? In this thrilling contest, Fleming's case was made by Anthony Horowitz, creator of the bestselling Alex Rider spy novels and author of the official Bond continuation novel Trigger Mortis. Championing Le Carré – whose memoir about his life as a former spy currently sits in the bestseller lists – was David Farr, Emmy-nominated screenwriter of the BBC's adaptation of The Night Manager. Actors Lesley Manville, Simon Callow, Matthew Lewis and Alex Macqueen joined us to bring both authors' works to life along with our host, author and critic Erica Wagner. ----  If you'd like to become a Member and get access to all our full ad free conversations, plus all of our Members-only content, just visit intelligencesquared.com/membership to find out more. Simon Callow is a critically acclaimed actor, director, author and star of classic movies such as Room with a View, Shakespeare in Love and Howards End. However, it's his part as Gareth in Four Weddings and a Funeral that many took to their hearts. Callow's failures include a childhood rejection that still haunts him, a play he directed which was savaged by the critics, painting and how he was ‘very annoyed' not to get the movie part of Amadeus despite having played it on stage. W/C 23rd December 2024Here we go then, the Christmas TFM. Over the last couple of weeks I have been watching a lot of Christmas specials, you know the kind of thing Not Going Out, Gavin & Stacey, Frasier, Click & Collect, etc, etc. I have been over indulging in them for the reasons we do anything at this time of the year; they are there and they make you feel good. And I think some of that Christmas Special formula has permeated its way into this week's episode. Think about it, it feels like a normal episode but somehow it isn't quite the same, it has an unashamed Christmas vibe and it is a little less ranty and a little more mushy.Of course any series that has been running this long would be expected to deliver some form of festive special, after all it is the law, so I am on point in that respect.Stay safe.P.S The other Christmas Carol spoken TV episode I was struggling to recall was Simon Callow. That'll be Christmas - Thea GilmoreHendersons RelishSheffield Lyceum Snow WhiteTherapy For Me (or TFM as I now refer to it) is a bit of an audio curiosity. It started out as a mechanism for me to clear my head, with the hope that by saying stuff out loud it would act as a little bit of self-help. It's remains loose in style, fluid in terms of content and raw - it's a one take, press record and see what happens, affair. If you want to keep in touch with TFM and the other stuff I do then please follow me on Facebook, Insta, Twitter or Patreon. Thanks for getting this far.

Visste ni att det finns en skräckfilm som handlar om Nalle Puh??!?!! Visste ni även att denna film har en uppföljare?!?!? Det är denna som behandlas i veckans avsnitt av Filmsmakarna. Filmen heter Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2.

“Don't you agree that, on one's first visit to Florence, one must have a room with a view?” We watched the Merchant Ivory 1985 classic "A Room with a View" with our friend Rufino Cabang and excuse us as we faint in the arms of Julian Sands. Breaking American audiences to actors like Helena Bonham Carter, Julian Sands, Daniel Day Lewis, and  Rupert Graves this movie was a huge cross over success in American that was nominated for eight Academy Awards, and won for its adaptation for the screen by Ruth Prater Jhabvala. 20 year-old Helena looks like a porcelain doll,  swoon worthy men, and Maggie Smith is also here to talk some hot goss with Judi Dench. What more could you want in a costume drama! Also, the perfect cover for a movie to rent for young gay boys across the world, that features a famous skinny dipping scene with Julian Sands, Rupert Graves, and Simon Callow stripping down to their birthday suits for a dip. "A Room with a View" helped usher in the success of movies like Maurice, Remains of the Day, and Howard's End much to excitement of English Lit nerds, and all the boys who were "a joy to have in class."  Thanks for listening and don't forget to subscribe, rate and review us on Apple Podcasts! www.patreon.com/moviesthatmadeusgay Facebook/Instagram: @moviesthatmadeusgay Twitter: @MTMUGPod Scott Youngbauer: Twitter @oscarscott / Instagram @scottyoungballer Peter Lozano: Twitter/Instagram @peterlasagna

Vancouver-based filmmaker, educator, and podcaster Devan Scott joins to discuss Street Fighter: The Movie, based on the hugely popular Capcom video game franchise. Dismissed by both critics and fans of the game at the time of its release as a disaster, the film has since found a small but vocal faction of champions nearly 30 years later. We discuss the film as an example of what Devan calls "The Anti-Masterpiece": A film that through no fault of its author becomes an astonishing work, either in spite or because of a distinct lack of conventional competence. Then, we discuss the pleasure of watching a film featuring a massive ensemble cast, none of whom can seem to agree on what kind of movie is being made - from Jean-Claude Van Damme's incidentially self-referential Colonel Guile to Raul Julia's genuinely great, Shakespearean take on despotic warlord General M. Bison. Finally, we discuss the film's inadvertantly prescient take on the American imperial project of the 21st century, and how its caroonishness and brazen stupidity feel right at home in a post-Trump America.  Follow Devan Scott on Twitter.Read Brandon Streussnig's "Wrapped In Plastic: JCVD's Street Fighter" for Secret Handshake.Read Chris Plante's "Street Fighter: The Movie - What Went Wrong" for Polygon.Get access to all of our premium episodes and bonus content by becoming a Hit Factory Patron for just $5/month.....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish.

And speaking of movies, William J. Mann reveals how a breathtakingly beautiful 20-year-old starlet and a thrice-divorced alcoholic more than twice her age created that rarest thing in Hollywood: a love story for the ages. And then Rich Cohen joins us for a conversation about U.F.O.'s and what to make of the recent testimony of a whistleblower who claims the government has captured alien flying machines. Yikes! Today, we journey back to the 18th-century Vienna with the remarkable cinematic masterpiece, "Amadeus".This 1984 film, directed by the virtuoso Milos Forman, is an opulent dramatization of the imagined rivalry between two of history's most influential composers - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri. From a screenplay penned by Peter Shaffer, based on his own stage play, Forman constructs a lush tapestry of jealousy, divine talent, and the human tragedy tied to both.We marvel at the tour de force performances of Tom Hulce (well remembered Dan!) as the youthful prodigy, Mozart, and F. Murray Abraham as the envious Salieri. The characters' intricate psychological interplay presents a rare dual protagonist-antagonist dynamic that resonates even decades later. And the meticulously crafted score, reverberating with Mozart's timeless symphonies, almost functions as a character itself."Amadeus" raises profound questions about talent and mediocrity, grace and obsession, making it a film that continues to stir heated discussions among us Dads. Tune in as we delve into the complex themes, the immortal music, and the brilliant cinematography that won this film eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture.Whether you're a Mozart aficionado, a historical drama enthusiast, or a film lover who enjoys a compelling narrative, "Amadeus" offers something for everyone. Join us as we traverse this cinematic symphony, only on this week's episode of Bad Dads. Let's 'play' on!We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. Few people are as well placed to answer that question than John Mullan and Simon Callow. Mullan is a professor of English literature, whose recent book, The Artful Dickens, reveals the tricks and ploys of this most eccentric of literary geniuses. Callow, renowned actor, director and author, has written two books on Dickens, portrayed him on film and television, and has been thrilling audiences since 2011 with his sold-out one-man performances of A Christmas Carol.  Mullan and Callow join us on the podcast to celebrate this most beloved of Dickens' stories and discuss how a work which Dickens originally intended to be a political tract about the misery of the Victorian poor became one of the most enduring Christmas classics.  Learn more about your ad choices. He is also a polarizing and controversial figure, but his influence on children's literature is undeniable. James and the Giant Peach is very typical in his storytelling in that it features a protagonist who is a small child that is smart, lonely, and is abused by the adults in their lives. Dahl dedicated it in 1961 to his daughter Olivia who died from complications of measles only a year after the book's publication. James Henry Trotter is an orphan sent to live with two mean Aunts after his parents die. They work him tirelessly until he meets a magician who gives him magic crystals--that he loses almost immediately. But, soon, a giant peach grows on his front lawn, sending him on a grand adventure.
