Ugly American Werewolf in London: Fleetwood Mac (1975)

By 1975, Fleetwood Mac had already had many iterations and lineups. Started by veterans of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, early Fleetwood Mac were a blues based band with limited success on the US Billboard chart. By 1975, they had lost their main singer, lead guitarist and main songwriter in Bob Welch and remaining members Christine McVie, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood were on the search for a spark. While working at Sunset Studios, they heard the debut album from a duo that was also a couple, Buckingham Nicks. Though at first they were interested in hiring on Lindsey Buckingham as their singer and guitarist, they soon found out that he would only join if they took his singer/songwriter girlfriend Stevie Nicks as well. The rest is pop/rock history as the 1975 product of the five piece, Fleetwood Mac, would go on to sell over 7 million copies in the US alone. Now with three lead singers/songwriters in the band, they could choose the best of the best for inclusion on the record. While the choices for singles didn't always make sense (Warm Ways was the 1st UK single, World Turning wasn't released as a single), the chemistry did and the world heard harmonies that were unknown before. While Christine McVie held her own with lilting love songs (Warm Ways, Over My Head, Say You Love Me), Lindsey Buckingham offered more upbeat rockers like Monday Morning and the brooding So Afraid. However, the real star in the making was Stevie Nicks who turned the album's and the band's fortunes with her all-time classic Rhiannon. It really introduced the world to Stevie Nicks and the power she possessed in her voice and songwriting. She also offered the sweet Landslide, another track on this album that would go on to be a rock radio staple and part of their live show. The success of Fleetwood Mac gave them the opportunity to release Rumours in 1977, an album that would sell over 40 million copies worldwide. But this album laid the groundwork for Rumours and all the future success for the band for the next 50 years. Dairy hasn't felt the impacts of tariffs yet - but it likely will. That's the conclusion of Dr. Leonard Polzin, dairy economist at UW-River Falls and state UW-Extension Dairy Economist. Polzin talks to Bob Bosold about specific areas that might be targeted, and how Wisconsin's labeling on specialty cheeses might impact some of those tariffs. Wisconsin will look prettier today, but winds will still be gusty. Stu Muck paints a picture of weekend weather. A relatively new group has published an important piece of guidance for policy in Wisconsin. Bob Welch, executive director of the new Rural Policy Institute, highlights what the groups goal is, and also explains a new report they've released. "The Rural/Urban Balance in Wisconsin" is a detailed, scientific research paper that breaks out geography and demographics of the state. Welch says Wisconsin is still definitely "rural", and that has to be remembered in public policy. Soybean growers are more than producers of livestock feed. They're also fueling the next generation of renewable fuel. Pam Jahnke gets an update with Steve Wilkens, WI Soybean Marketing Board Member, attending the 2025 GO Transportation conference. Wilkens says it's his fourth year attending the conference that covers more than just road transportation. Paid for by WI Soybean Marketing Board.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A new organization is working to ensure rural Wisconsin thrives. The Rural Policy Institute (RPI) was formed in July 2024 as a nonprofit, non-partisan coalition of agricultural and rural organizations. Its goal is to research and develop policies that promote generational prosperity in rural communities. "Rural Wisconsin has unique challenges, and we're here to help policymakers understand those," said Bob Welch, RPI's executive director. "We're not an advocacy group, but we provide valuable research so informed decisions can be made." RPI's recent study revealed new insights about rural areas. Traditionally, the U.S. Census Bureau classified rural communities by population size. However, RPI uses population density to better define rural, suburban, and urban areas. "This method shows that many small towns once seen as rural are actually suburban," Welch explained. "Meanwhile, larger communities surrounded by farmland remain rural in culture and lifestyle." 1978 World Series Game 3 Friday October 13th, 1978 @ Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York, New York As the series heads east, the Dodgers are in strong position, up two games to none. Game one was a blowout, thanks to a power outburst from LAD 2B Davey Lopes, but game two was nail biter. Ron Cey drove in all four runs, including a go-ahead three run homer off of Catfish Hunter in the 6th inning. The Yankees had the tying and go-ahead runners on base in the ninth for Thurman Munson and Reggie Jackson, and Tommy Lasorda turned to rookie fireballer Bob Welch to hold the line. With incredible determination and guile, the kid came through, forcing Munson to fly out and striking out Jackson after an epic nine pitch battle. The crowd was electric, and while they would love another opportunity to cheer on their squad, the LA faithful are hoping the Boys in Blue take care of business in New York. In previous World Series, only five teams had ever overcome a 2 - 0 deficit, the most recent being the 1971 Pirates. And in each of those series where a team did come back, they had to do it in seven games. The task is hard, but it is nigh impossible if you go down 3 - 0 in the series. No team has ever overcome a 3 - 0 deficit in a World Series, so the Yankees are desperate to win this one. Good thing that they have the best pitcher in the world going for them, Ron Guidry (25 -3 1.74 ERA 273 IP). The young lefty has been sensational the entire year, but it has been quite the workload he's compiled. For a pitcher who relies on plus stuff matched with plus command, fatigue could hamper his effectiveness. If the Gator isn't missing bats like usual, he'll need his defense to be sharp, particularly the left side with Bucky Dent and Graig Nettles. On the other side, the Dodgers will turn to Don Sutton (15 - 11 3.55 ERA 238 IP). The future Hall-of-Famer picked up his 200th career win during the regular season, however 1978 was probably his weakest year in nearly a decade. Sutton, who entering the playoffs had never lost a postseason start, got shelled against the Phillies in the NLCS. He'll need to be much sharper if the Dodgers hope to take an insurmountable lead in this series. Audio clips from joeydbball on Youtube - NBC broadcast with Joe Garagiola, Tony Kubek, and Tom Seaver As always, shoutout to Baseball Reference and SABR for statistics, box scores, background information, and much, much more. The fact that you took Seven Summer (And a Few Bummers) to do the Pacific Coast Trail in your 60s, right?” Bob and Kirsten talk about how humility, perseverance and flexibility (hello Covid!) were the right combination to get Raising Empowered Athletes finished. In honor of Veterans Day, we have a very special episode for you. After any war, including WWII, soldiers are often deeply haunted by what they saw and did during the war. American Don Malarkey and German Fritz Engelbert, both depicted in the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers for fighting in one of the biggest military operations of all time, were no different. For 60 years, they held onto guilt and pain from WWII…until something happened that changed the rest of their lives and gave them peace.Today I'm joined by Don's daughter, Marianne, and Fritz's sons, Matthias and Volker, to hear about an unlikely close friendship that is almost impossible for veterans who had seen each other as enemies for decades. I was blown away when I first heard their story! You'll hear:Why Don and Fritz each joined their country's military in the 1940'sWhat D-Day and The Battle of the Bulge was like for both sidesWhat led to an extremely unusual encounter 60 years after the warHow that encounter totally changed their lives and the lives of their familiesHow the book Saving My Enemy by Bob Welch, which details their story, came to be writtenOrder a copy of Saving My Enemy on Amazon HEREEnter to win a free e-copy of the book (drawing will be November 17)Leave a review of this podcast on your favorite platform; it helps us get these stories out to more people who need to hear them!To give specific feedback directly to us on what you like about the podcast and what you don't, fill out this 5-minute survey.Don't let fear win. In this episode, outdoors intern Olivia Stevens takes listeners through a Eugene author's unusual strategy to finishing the Pacific Crest Trail. Rather than the traditional experience of completing the trail from the borders of Mexico to Canada in one go, Bob Welch hiked the 2,650 miles in 17 chunks over 11 years. Welch recently published a book about his experience, “Seven Summers (and a few Bummers): My Adventures on the 2,650-mile Pacific Crest Trail.” He will speak about the book and sign copies at Tsunami Books in Eugene on Thursday at 7 p.m. and at the Corvallis public library at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 7. Stevens talked to Welch about the PCT, trail magic and the pros and cons of sectioning out the iconic trail from Mexico to Canada.

ALVIN TAYLOR Legendary Drummer, Musical Director, Producer Alvin has been a lover of drums since the age of five, and his professional career began at the age of fourteen, when he was discovered by, and toured with Little Richard. His most amazing experience came when he was invited to London by George Harrison (of the Beatles) to both live in his castle and to record the “33 1/3” album … and that album went platinum. Further evidence of Alvin's unique talent is his on-going list of credits and tours with other legendary artists such as: Elton John, Tina Turner, Bob Dylan, Bob Welch, Stevie Wonder, Natalie Cole, Gil Scott Heron, Diana Ross, Barry White, Sly Stone, Leo Sayer, Bill Withers, Andre' Crouch, Ronnie Woods, who is the guitarist with the Rolling Stones, and so many others. While working with Little Richard, Alvin played on the hit album “King of Rock & Roll.” He was then asked to join a band called PG&E (Pacific, Gas & Electric) with lead singer Charlie Allen and guitarist Steve Beckmeier. They went on to record a hit song called “Are You Ready” and also did a remake of the hit song“Stagger-Lee.” Billy Preston, also known as, the 5th Beatle and a Beatles' favorite, was initially responsible for Alvin's introduction to studio dates. Alvin went on to tour and record with Billy Preston on many occasions. He also recorded “I'm Just a Sucker For Your Love” with Tina Marie and Rick James. Shortly after that, Alvin's demand as a studio musician by the best producers in the music industry such as Robert Margouleff, Richard Perry, George Martin, the legendary Motown producer Frank Wilson and Norman Whitfield was relentless, and his calendar was never short of dates. He was a constant guest on hit musical television shows such as the Midnight Special, In Concert, Solid Gold, Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, The Real Don Steele and Soul Train. Alvin was then asked by Jerry Goldstein to play with the famous and long- standing group War. Goldstein produced, managed, and owned the group as well as the record label Avenue Records. Alvin turned down the offer, however, he then joined the Eric Burdon band. They recorded the albums, “Sun Secrets,” “Stop,” and a double album conceived for a movie sound track titled “Mirage.” He also did a world tour with the Eric Burdon Band. While Alvin was touring with Eric Burdon, an A&R man from Capitol Records named John Carter, one of Alvin's biggest fans, signed Bob Welch, the original guitarist with Fleetwood Mac, to a long-term contract with Capitol Records. He then asked Alvin to put a band together for Welch's album project. After Alvin listened to Welch's demos, he asked Carter, “Who are the musicians playing on the demo?” – Carter's response was “That is all Bob Welch, playing the bass, the keyboards and guitars.” Alvin then informed Carter that he had found a band that could do the recording for Bob Welch's solo album called “French Kiss.” That band consisted of Alvin Taylor and Bob Welch, featuring the hit single “Ebony Eyes,” and the album went gold and then platinum. This was the first tangible proof that Alvin has incredible musical direction and production skills in addition to his dynamic drumming talent. Today, he is still an active and passionate drummer, as well as a music director and producer. He continues to do miscellaneous dates and tours with various artists. He is currently working in pre-production as a musical director for a major television show. His life has been so enriched by his musical craft and astounding career as a successful artist, that he is now in the process of writing a book about his life story. He is always seeking to create and develop new artists, and he has a never-ending artistic mind and enduring love for music. MORE KELLY EXECUTIVE PRODUCER BROOKLYN CARDENAS
