Rick Stainton, the man behind creative agency Smyle, founded One Industry One Voice (OIOV) in the eye of the pandemic as a ‘coalition of associations and businesses created to champion the entire events industry'.   In this episode, Rick explains why OIOV has recently been rebranded The Power of Events (TPOE) – a partnership with, but not limited to, Greenwich, Westminster, Surrey, Leeds Beckett, Bournemouth, UWS, Edinburgh Napier, Ulster, Swansea and Cardiff Met.   A persuasive speaker with a whole lot to say, Rick talks about the Covid-19 impact and his ‘diplomatic crusade' which brought OIOV together two long years ago, getting commitment from myriad trade associations and businesses.    Rick goes on to mention the opportunities and the recovery process, the potential for newcomers, as well as the lack of respect from the media and government, and how that fits with a ‘completely party agnostic, non-lobbying' TPOE.

Welcome to the third episode of Unit 2: Supporting the online learner. In this episode we’ll be discussing digital literacy, which given the struggles that we have had on the module in engaging with audio and trying to become familiar with the functionality of Moodle for your seminars, may be coming at just the right time. This podcast comes to you from Edinburgh Napier, where Laurence Patterson, BOE Programme Leader, talks about digital literacy. We think this is a brilliant interview because in conversation with Colin, Laurence clarifies and explores the concept of digital literacy and in so doing, he distinguishes in a really useful way amongst related terms (such as information literacy) that are sometimes used interachangeably (mistakenly in our view!). So whether you’re new or familiar with this pedagogical vocabulary and the discussion that often surrounds these concepts, we expect that there will be something for everyone in this podcast.

The 83rd episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast is with Robin MacPherson, who seems to be a very busy man.He is Professor of Screen Media at Edinburgh Napier University, director of Screen Academy Scotland and of the Institute for Creative Industries at Edinburgh Napier. He makes documentaries, current affairs and drama including the BAFTA-nominated , The Butterfly Man. In 1997, he established Asylum Pictures, an independent production company whose films include the Scottish-BAFTA nominated documentary, Tree Fellers, and (as co-producer) the award-winning Fellini: I'm a born liar. Since 2008 he has led ENGAGE, an EU MEDIA-funded collaboration with the Irish, Estonian and Finnish national film schools. In 2010 he was appointed by the Scottish Government to the Board of Creative Scotland and in April 2011 he joined the Board of Creative Edinburgh. Oh and he blogs too.Frankly, I'm amazed he managed to find the time to come on, but he did, and we talked about the current situation with regard to the creative industries in Scotland. Is the union holding us back and how could independence improve things?Should Scotland have its own film studio? What would be the benefits and the drawbacks? We talked about the creative output that the referendum campaign itself has generated. Has there been anything inspiring? And as ever, I asked why this week's guest supports Independence for Scotland.
