Today we're all on our own without a guest, because we're presenting original Cardiff Met research! But our colleague Sioned Dafydd is with us in spirit as she was a key member of the three-person research team that carried out this work. Today we're looking at what happens when student teachers change from one school placement to another, and when they move from their initial teacher education into their first job. In particular, we're focusing on the part that Wales's Professional Standards for Teaching and Leadership have to play, but many of the issues we uncovered are universal for all of us who work with new members of the profession. Using the results of interviews with student teachers and their school-based mentors over the course of a year (plus a final interview with three of our participants once they had secured jobs), we pieced together what goes on when new teachers make the transition from one school to another. With a little help from theories by Wenger, Maton and Korthagen & Lagerwerf, we try to explain what causes those tricky moments in new schools when people feel they've gone backwards, and propose some ways to make things easier. --------------------------------------------Recorded in studio D0.18 at Cardiff Metropolitan University's Cyncoed Campus on 16th December 2024
We interrupt our normal service with a callout to all our listeners who are secondary school teachers in Wales!Dear teacher, Cardiff Met is working with Canterbury Christ Church University on a research project to explore teacher-teacher dialogue around Curriculum for Wales. As a first stage of the project, we're releasing a survey aimed at secondary school teachers across Wales. We would really appreciate you, as a secondary school teacher in Wales, taking the time to complete this survey. It should take 15 minutes. We also ask you to have a conversation with your teaching colleagues about the survey so that they have a reminder to complete it. We're hoping to understand the conversations you have before launching some research interventions later in the project. We plan to donate money to some Welsh charities in line with responses to the survey. Go to our website to find out more about our project and sign up for updates. nicer.org.uk/cultivating-dialogue Here's the survey in EnglishDyma'r Arolwg yn GymraegThank you / Diolch!

For today's episode, we return to a comment made by Professor David Egan in a previous episode, where he identified community focused schools as important in supporting pupils and their families living in poverty. To dig a little deeper into what they are and what they do, we've invited Dr Jan Huyton to the studio. Jan has done a lot of work on this, and also uses a multi-agency approach when teaching on the MA in Education here at Cardiff Met.Jan tells us what community focused schools can be, what they do, and what obstacles we need to overcome to join up various types of organisations which seek to support children and families.--------------------------------------------------------------Recorded in studio B2.15 at Cardiff Metropolitan University's Cyncoed Campus on 24th April 2024

Artifical Intelligence: is it going to revolutionise learning and the world of work? Or take our jobs and then kill us all? We've had our eye on doing an episode on AI for quite a while, but needed a guest who would give us an education angle and avoid the sensationalist stuff... step forward Karl Jones from Cardiff Met's School of Technologies! Karl was previously in Initial Teacher Education with our colleagues in Trinity Saint David, Carmarthen, so knows his way round a classroom as well as a computer. He joins us in the studio to discuss what teachers need to know about AI, where it can help, what the traps are, and how they should open a discussion with pupils about what's a legitimate application for everyone involved. Thanks to Karl for coming in, and this feels like a topic we'll be returning to more than once in the coming few years!-------------------------------------------Recorded in studio B2.15 at Cardiff Metropolitan University's Cyncoed Campus on 29th November 2023

We always like a good collaboration here on Cardiff Met's initial teacher education (ITE) programmes! Today we welcome to the studio our colleague Sioned Dafydd, and podcast veteran (from all the way back in season 1, no less) Sarah Cason from Palmerston Primary School. Since she joined us last time, Sarah has been upgraded to headteacher, and has a key role in partnership with Cardiff Met, creating the best possible experiences for our student teachers. The project, funded by two regional school improvement consortia (CSC and EAS), aimed to improve people's understanding of Wales's very aspirational, holistic professional standards for teaching and leadership (PSTL), but ended up giving us wider insights into how professional dialogue helps new members of the teaching profession to learn and develop. Hopefully, whether you're in Wales or further afield, you'll get useful ideas and pointers about setting up really meaningful professional dialogues which make the complex work of teaching accessible, and open up paths to improvement for new teachers. If you find this useful in your own context, why not give us a shout - we're @talkteachingpod on X (or Twitter as we can't stop calling it) and would love to hear from you. Then, Sioned talks to both managers and a couple of players from The New Saints and Swansea City under21's before the Nathaniel MG Final this coming Saturday.
As an initial teacher education (ITE) institution, we spend a lot of our time thinking about mentoring student teachers, especially how to support our school-based colleagues who undertake this vital role. Our colleagues in the regional school improvement consortia think about it too, especially with their responsibility for mentoring newly-qualified teachers (NQTs). One consortium, Central South Consortium, carried out an appreciative enquiry to try and get hold of the very best mentoring practice out there in South Wales, and that's what we're talking about in today's episode. Joining us in the studio are Lucy Donovan from CSC, and Sharne Watkins from Cardiff Met. What is an appreciative enquiry? How can I be a great mentor? Is mentoring student teachers and NQTs different? In this weeks' pod, we hear from former player James Roberts, now Sports Broadcaster as he takes us through his documentary that he has made about London Welsh, called Dragons in Exile. We hear about his rugby background and all the support he received from Cardiff Met as he pursued his Masters in Sports Broadcasting. James came to London Welsh and was with us for two years during Covid; so his game time was limited and then cut short through injury. He still benefitted greatly from the `Careers Hub at London Welsh and felt the advice given has helped shape his career to date. He is now an active Stadium Announcer, Commentator at many sports event around the world and we expect many more things from James, once people get to see the film he has made. We also catch up with Osian McAvoy on the club's season to date, his thoughts on the top of the table clash with Havant and why the squad for this season is tighter than ever. Enjoy.
It's time for another live panel discussion, a format we conveniently discovered a few weeks before the coronavirus lockdown, and then had to wait three years to have another go at! Now we're making up for lost time with another one, live from the Newport City Campus of our friends, the University of South Wales. The National Professional Enquiry Project has been running in Wales for a number of years now, and today's episode comes from a conference celebrating the project. We're joined by Sian Sarwar from Cardiff Met, and Lisa Taylor (friend of the podcast!) and Dr Cath Jones from USW, to discuss experiences of enquiry. No live episode is complete without some audience Q&A at the end, too. Thanks to our hosts, USW, for looking after us, our audience and questioners, and to Gemma Mitchell for reprising her role as keeper of the microphone on a very long wire. -----------------------------------------------------------------Recorded live at the University of South Wales's Newport City campus on 6th July 2023

Continuing our series on Bruce Lee during this 50th anniversary year, and in the run-up to our annual conference (this year at Sheffield University in July), we present 'Bruce Lee and the invention of martial arts', with Dr George Jennings (Cardiff Met)
Rapidly attaining the status of podcasting legend, Dr Louise Allen-Walker returns to our studio for another fun-filled adventure in the world of neuroscience. Louise is the programme director for Cardiff Met's MSc Psychology in Education programme, and is therefore well-placed to give us some interesting psychological goodies to help us in our teaching practice, as well as to bust some more examples of neuroscience being used in ways that are confusing, inaccurate or just plain dodgy. Louise has brought along one of her favourite books: The Science of Learning: 99 studies every teacher needs to know. The book presents 99 two-page summaries of seminal studies and unpacks the implications for the classroom teacher in a highly accessible format - no psychology expertise required! In this episode, we discuss four studies which cover cognitive load, resilience, interaction with nature and the ominously-named 'seduction of neuroscience'. Louise also brings us something interesting and something to try, because you don't get to be a programme director without a serious commitment to doing your homework. Louise's first episode recorded down-the-line during Covid was memorable for an appearance by the infamous 'neuromyth van' outside her house (you'll have to listen to find out what we're on about). In her second she was challenged to bust as many neuromyths as she could against the clock. Will we come up with something else bizarre for Louise this time around? Listen in and find out!-----------------------------Recorded in studio B2.16 at Cardiff Metropolitan University's Cyncoed Campus on 15th May 2023

Rick Stainton, the man behind creative agency Smyle, founded One Industry One Voice (OIOV) in the eye of the pandemic as a ‘coalition of associations and businesses created to champion the entire events industry'. In this episode, Rick explains why OIOV has recently been rebranded The Power of Events (TPOE) – a partnership with, but not limited to, Greenwich, Westminster, Surrey, Leeds Beckett, Bournemouth, UWS, Edinburgh Napier, Ulster, Swansea and Cardiff Met. A persuasive speaker with a whole lot to say, Rick talks about the Covid-19 impact and his ‘diplomatic crusade' which brought OIOV together two long years ago, getting commitment from myriad trade associations and businesses. Rick goes on to mention the opportunities and the recovery process, the potential for newcomers, as well as the lack of respect from the media and government, and how that fits with a ‘completely party agnostic, non-lobbying' TPOE.
We're back with the second half of our double-bill discussing the outcomes of joint research carried out by Cardiff Metropolitan University and Cardiff University into the impact of Covid-19 on the education landscape. The research focused particularly on assessment, and looked at both pupils and student teachers. In this second episode we're rejoined by Professor Emmajane Milton from Cardiff University, and also welcome Dr Anna Bryant and Dr Viv John from Cardiff Met. We're discussing the reforms to initial teacher education in Wales, the model of research-informed clinical practice that was adopted in Cardiff, and what happened when Covid-19 hit less than a year into a brand-new (for us) way of educating teachers. We discuss the place of research-informed clinical practice in supporting new teachers to develop despite a rocky start to their careers, differing perceptions between school and university about the way that Covid-19 impacted teacher education, and look at how we move forward and continue developing our vision together with our school partners. What features are the Covid-keepers, and what innovations do we want to throw out and never see again?
