ING Sector Banker Dirk Mulder in gesprek met Almar Fernhout, oprichter van Smyle. Smyle wil badkamers vrij van plastic maken en heeft tandpasta in tabletvorm ontwikkeld dat net zo goed werkt als normale tandpasta. Zeg je tandpasta, dan denk je aan een dikke smurrie die wordt geleverd in een plastic tube. Per jaar worden er zo'n 20 miljard van deze tubes geproduceerd. En door hun samenstelling (lees: verschillende plasticsoorten met een dun laagje aluminium) is het veel te duur om ze te recyclen. Smyle lost dat probleem op met tandpasta als tabletje, aangeboden in duurzame navulverpakkingen en glazen flesjes. In het product zitten bovendien geen kunstmatige kleurstoffen, conserveringsmiddelen, weekmakers en microplastics. Het bedrijf profileerde zich aanvankelijk als pure e-commerce speler, maar richt zich inmiddels steeds meer op andere verkoopkanalen. Je kan Gijs ‘s nachts wakker maken voor een worteltje maar zijn leesschema is geen lang leven beschoren. Teun wordt strikt in de gaten gehouden tijdens het WK en terwijl Hanneke geniet van haar sigaret maken we een heerlijke trip down memory lane. Op de wc kreeg Gijs een diepe schoolvibe, wat Teun terugvoert naar de ontberingen van kinderkamp Grote Beer. Gijs ging naar Hopsi Topsi Land; ieder zijn trauma. We fantaseren over het klonen van onze heart & soul zodat ze de wereld over kan en we gaan eruit met een psychedelische Beatles-tip.

De eerste dag van de Week van De Ondernemer gemist? Dagelijks zijn er tijdens de Week van de Ondernemer live ondernemers en experts uit het bedrijfsleven aan het woord. De eerste dag stond in het teken van Duurzaam ondernemen en co-host van deze dag is Robbert Jan Kromkamp, directeur ING Groenbank. Wat zijn de grootste uitdagingen voor ondernemers die duurzamer willen werken? Plastic is overal niet alleen in de natuur door rondslingerende verpakkingen, maar het zit ook in veel producten. Wist je dat de meeste mensen een paar keer per dag hun tanden met plastic poetsen? Daar moest wat aan gedaan worden. "Twee jaar geleden zijn we gestart met Smyle en hebben nu al bijna 1 miljoen plastic verpakkingen bespaard", aldus Almar Fernhout, één van de oprichters. Dat veel mensen het merk een warm hart toedragen blijkt wel uit het feit dat honderden mensen meer dan 550 duizend euro hebben toegezegd in de vorm van sharefunding. Via het platform Broccoli kun je mede-eigenaar worden van dit snelgroeiende duurzame bedrijf. Remy Gieling ging in gesprek over Smyle met oprichter Almar Fernhout. Verder was Marc Rotmans van Groendakcoach te gast. Steeds meer bedrijven gaan voor duurzaam. Of het nu is vanuit een wens van de werkgever of werknemers, of vanuit de ISO normen of… er zijn zoveel redenen! Maar waar kun je beginnen? De Week van de Ondernemer wordt al ruim twintig jaar georganiseerd om, in het algemeen, ondernemerschap te stimuleren; het is uitgegroeid tot het grootste ondernemersevent van het land.

Here are the primary changes that have been implemented in the flexibility act:  Originally you had 8 weeks to bring your payroll up to normal numbers/use the funds. Now, the time has been extended to 24 weeks—if necessary—and will end December 31st, 2020. Originally, at least 75% of the loan had to be spent on payroll to be forgiven. The other 25% could be spent on rent, utilities, and interest charges. Now it’s been changed to a 60/40 split—60% minimum on payroll and 40% between rent, utilities, and interest. Lastly, if you spent the money in other areas the money would roll into a loan versus being forgiven. The original loan repayment terms were to be over a 2-year period. Now you have 5 years to pay back the loan—at only a 1% interest rate.  Currently, you still have until June 30th to apply for the PPP loan. For some business owners, that date is reaching your original 8 weeks. So if you can’t get your payroll numbers up by then, consider extending to the 24 weeks.  What is the next step for designers?  If you haven’t yet applied for the PPP loan because of the repayment terms, inability to operate your design firm, etc. you still have time to apply. The repayment terms are favorable even if you can’t get your loan forgiven. So if you need the funds, there is still approximately $120 billion left in the program (at the time of recording).  If you’ve applied for and received the loan, you’re probably wondering how to apply for forgiveness. The current application is linked in the resources above. However, Aaron points out that it’s likely to be revised. When banks begin accepting the forgiveness paperwork, you’ll bring the application to the bank you received the loan through.  You’ll need to be prepared with documentation. The CARES Act is the topic of discussion around the USA right now—and for good reason. It’s providing economic relief in a time of great need. But it also plays a huge role in economic relief for small businesses. As of April 3rd, registration will open online for the CARES act. The Payroll Protection Program (PPP) was part of the legislation that was passed. So what is it? At its core, it’s a forgivable loan from the government to help cover payroll for 8 weeks. You’re allowed to borrow 2.5x the monthly average of your yearly payroll costs (wages, independent contractors, health insurance costs, and retirement benefits are included in the calculation). It also includes owners’ compensation. As a simple example, if your average payroll is $10,000 a month, you can borrow up to $25,000 through the PPP. Eligible expenses that can be considered for forgiveness are rent, utilities, interest payments, and payroll. The caveat is that you HAVE to keep people on the payroll.  If you do not have people on payroll (or wages being paid out), only an amount up to 25% of what is borrowed can be forgiven for rent, utilities and interest. If you’ve already laid some people off, you have until June 30th to hire them back and prove that you’re consistently paying the payroll that you were prior to the coronavirus pandemic.  If your numbers track correctly and you’ve proven you’ve retained your employees, the whole loan amount will be forgiven. At this time, the assistance is for 2 months. If the Coronavirus pandemic persists longer than projected, they may need to pass further legislation. Keep listening as Aaron covers some details for S-Corps, interest rates if your loan is not completely forgiven, and more.  Consider the Economic Injury Disaster Loan  Aaron points out that small business owners should apply for the Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL)—where the first $10,000 is technically a grant. Supposedly, you should have access to the funds within 3 days of applying and no proof is necessary (unlike the records required for the PPP). You can still apply for the PPP, but the $10,000 will be subtracted from the amount that would be forgiven. So if you qualify for $50,000, $40,000 would be forgiven to account for this $10,000 grant. The EIDL is the best option for solopreneurs as it is eligible to cover their wages AND it can roll over into a loan if necessary.  During this time, payroll taxes that you owe can be deferred for a period of time. Aaron implores you to pay this if at all possible. If you go out of business, you as the owner will be personally liable for those taxes and required to pay them back. Aaron points out that we are all facing uncertainty and that you need to step back and evaluate and make the correct decision for your business despite your emotions. This weekend, April 28 and 29, the Flip Flop Festival will be held in the adjoining towns of Harpers Ferry and Bolivar, partly to celebrate the beginning of the outdoor season in Harpers Ferry but, more significantly, it is actively promoting flip-flop hikes as a viable, responsible approach to hiking the Appalachian Trail. James Smyle earned the name of Mayhem when he did his first thru-hike, back in the 90s, but the more laid back Mayhem went again in 2016, this time as a flip-flopper. He tells us about his hikes, though the conversation is geared towards his role as Chair of the Flip Flop Festival. You should check out the festival at FlipFlopFestival.org James and Steve discuss the attractions of this alternate route, comparing and contrasting the two hikes that James has taken. Mighty Blue on the Appalachian Trail is a strong proponent of the flip-flop as a concept but less happy about the name!!
