Daniel Takes a Train special with Paul Baker in conversation with David Eastaugh Daniel Takes A Train was originally formed in London in the 1980’s. The band split up in 1988 but re-emerged 30 years later as a live and recording act.     Named after a Hungarian art-house movie, Daniel Takes A Train was originally formed in London in the 1980’s by song-writing duo Paul Baker (vocals) and Dan Synge (guitar). Augmented by James Hannington (drums), Rupert Blomfield (bass) and Paul Davey (saxophone) the band were regulars on the West End club scene (Ronnie Scott’s, Le Beat Route, The Limelight, The Astoria, Empire Ballroom etc) and even gate-crashed the 1987 Brit Awards armed with demo tapes in order to get a record deal. The band split up in 1988 but re-emerged 30 years later as a live act featuring core original members, following their discovery, via an old promo video on YouTube, by Firestation Records, Germany. Over the years, they have crossed genres as diverse as synth pop, jazz/funk, jangle and indie rock but always with an eye on creating that perfect pop moment.

Jukebox musicals have become the bread and butter for a lot of community theatre groups. Minimal casts, simple sets and the built-in audience that comes with a popular singer or musical group is tough for an artistic director to resist. Around since the 1970’s, the genre really exploded onto the scene with the success of the ABBA-themed “Mamma Mia!” and continues with the recent Broadway opening of the Go-Go’s-themed “Head Over Heels”. Back in 1988, playwright Ted Swindley took 27 songs recorded by Patsy Cline and created “Always… Patsy Cline”, which is running now at Sonoma Arts Live through July 29. It’s not so much a musical biography as a snippet of Cline’s career as seen through the eyes of one of her biggest fans. It covers the six years from her appearance on Arthur Godfrey’s television program till her untimely death at age 30 in an aviation accident. Louise Seger (Karen Pinomaki) fell in love with Cline’s music the moment she heard it on a Texas radio station. When she hears that Patsy (Danielle DeBow) will be making a local appearance, she and some friends hightail it to the Empire Ballroom to discover no one’s there yet but Patsy. They strike up a conversation and become fast friends. Patsy ends up spending the night at Louise’s before heading back out on her tour. They regularly corresponded with each other after that night and it’s those letters that are the basis for the show. DeBow is a gifted vocalist who, in conjunction with her backup singers “The Jordanaires” (Sean O’Brien, F. James Raasche, Michael Scott Wells, Ted Von Pohle) and musical director Ellen Patterson and a six-piece band, delivers a quality evening of Cline’s greatest hits including “Sweet Dreams” and “Crazy”. The songs are interspersed with Louise’s musings about her life and her love for Patsy. Pinomaki is very entertaining as the bombastic, big-haired Louise, though there were moments where less would be more. Director Michael Ross, who’s directed a few female-centric musicals in his day (“Gypsy”, “Little Women”, “Sister Act” for example) shows a real mastery of the material here. Also responsible for costumes and some of the set design, he gets almost everything right. Costume work is stellar as DeBow must go through a dozen changes throughout the evening with each one colorfully evoking period and personality. The two-level set/three-sided audience design is interesting, but it leads to some awkward blocking and audience perspectives. Terrific performances, colorful design work, and classic Americana combine to make “Always… Patsy Cline” one of the better jukebox musicals I’ve seen on a North Bay Stage. “Always… Patsy Cline” plays Thursday through Sunday on the Rotary Stage of Andrews Hall in the Sonoma Community Center. Thursday through Saturday performances are at 7:30 pm; the Sunday matinee is at 2:00 pm. For more information, got to sonomartslive.org.

Guest Mix: Jordan Stevens (Marquee / Las Vegas). This months episode comes to you from the Buenos Aires hotel room of Christopher Lawrence where he is in town for Ultra Music Festival in Argentina. This months guest mix is from Jordan Stevens from Las Vegas. Jordan Stevens has a cultivated devotion to reading the dance floor every time he takes control of the tables and invigorates a crowd. For the Georgia-born, Vegas-based DJ, his unbiased approach to electronic dance music insures everyone from the critical club kid to a visitor from middle America will be dancing from when the party starts until last call."I enjoy all forms of electronic dance music," Stevens says. "There's an element in each genre that I love and incorporate into my sets." With a perceptive connection and unbiased approach to what any given room craves, Stevens first honed his skills a decade ago in the Vegas underground scene as part of duo Shawn & Stevens with fellow DJ, Kevin Shawn. He earned solo recognition amongst the afterhours set at the legendary Empire Ballroom with a two-year residency, followed by regular stints playing for Godskitchen at Body English and Vanity. Always searching to share his sound, Stevens then earned a coveted residency at The Palms Casino Resort for the launch of Paul Oakenfold's Perfecto at Rain Nightclub, as well weekly gigs at Moon and Ghostbar, earning him a nod by the "Las Vegas Weekly" as the publication's first "Rising Star DJ" in it's annual Best of the City awards. Accomplished and respected throughout the industry, the seasoned professional has mastered the art of setting up a room proper to carrying clubbers all night - exactly what dance music dominator Marquee Nightclub & Dayclub was looking for when they opened their doors and acquired Stevens as a weekly resident. But his reach goes far beyond the booth in Vegas and Stevens' previous tour stops include The Colossal Event in Phoenix, Circus in Los Angeles, The Church and Vinyl in Denver, and Tantra in Miami during the Winter Music Conference. Stevens has also captivated crowds at the annual Love Festival in addition to staying grounded with gigs at Obsession, Artisan and Drai's Afterhours. Special Guest: Jordan Stevens (Perfecto / Las Vegas). Jordan Stevens has been DJing since 2003. Starting off in the West Coast USA rave scene he quickly became an underground favorite. In 2005 he decided it was time to make the jump to the club scene, landing his first residency at Las Vegas's #1 afterhours, late night Empire. From there he went on to open for the likes of Christopher Lawrence, Judge Jules, and Eddie Halliwell. He was a mainstay in the club until 2008 when Empire Ballroom closed its doors for the last time. Jordan's career soon kickstarted into full force starting with openings at Godskitchen in the trance show scene with ATB, 4 Strings, and Above and Beyond to name a few. Jordan soon captured the attention of Mike Fuller at the Palms and was brought into play all the major dance music events, including Paul Oakenfold's "Perfecto" and Goodlife Sundays at Moon.
