A few years back, we contributed a book chapter on non-traditional options for disseminating behavior analysis with Matt Cicoria where we became slightly enamored with the idea of communities of practice as a means for knowledge sharing. Well, thanks to our amazing listeners on Patreon, that topic is back and with a full episode. We look at how to create a community of practice, whether the idea actually leads to changes in professional behavior, and what barriers might keep your new group of professional problem solvers down. Nareit's Senior Vice President for Research Ed Pierzak and Nareit Vice President for Index Management and Industry Information John Barwick joined the REIT Report to highlight key themes and trends in Nareit's 2026  REIT Outlook.Pierzak discussed the dual divergences at play between REITs and broader equities and REITs and private real estate. Each provides an opportunity for REITs to outperform, he said. At the same time, REIT balance sheets point to access to capital, putting the sector in a “great position to really embark on a growth opportunity in 2026,” alongside signs of a thawing in the transaction market, Pierzak said.Meanwhile, Barwick discussed global REIT performance, noting that currency movements were a significant tailwind for U.S.-based investors in 2025 as a weaker dollar bolstered the performance of international assets. For U.S. investors, strong local returns in developed Asia and developed Europe were further boosted when translated back into dollars, which widened the performance gap with North America, Barwick noted.Read the 2026 REIT outlook: https://www.reit.com/news/blog/market-commentary/2026-reit-outlook-trends-and-strategies

Welcome to the fifth series in the annual podcast programme from Academic Archers, bringing you papers from our 2024 conference. Please note: the sound quality on this recording is not as clear as usual. We apologise for this and thank you for your understanding. This episode tells the story of Barwick Green, from obscurity to becoming the alternative national anthem. From Obscurity to Alternative Nation Anthem: The Story of Barwick Green - Sally CadleA hundred years after Barwick Green was first performed by the Court Symphony Orchestra at the Royal Hall, Harrogate, this paper explores the life and work of its largely forgotten composer, Arthur Wood. Drawing on sources including insights from former members of The Archers production team and cast, Sally explains how and why this little-known piece of music became the theme for an everyday story of country folk. The paper also examines other appearances of Barwick Green in film, television, literature and media, tracing how these uses over the last 70 years have cemented its iconic status. Finally, Sally considers the different arrangements heard on The Archers – and some that were never used – to shed new light on the worldwide recognition of this familiar tune.About the speakerSally Cadle has been listening to The Archers since childhood and has contributed to Academic Archers since the first conference, where she famously introduced knitting. Now a respected member of the Saturday Ambridgeology Study Society, her research covers a range of Archers-related topics. Beyond Ambridge, Sally knits, weaves, and makes costumes for her local community theatre. She once received a Police Commissioners Commendation for her quick response and first aid skills following a major stabbing. If you enjoy our work and would like to support Academic Archers, you can Buy Us a Coffee – buymeacoffee.com/academicarchers.

They took a very human centred approach, and we discussed Laura Rock's adage to ‘not answer feelings with facts' when considering staff anxieties about change. They drew upon Bartenuk's work to orient their thinking about how change was experienced at the individual level, beyond simply measuring resistance or readiness.  The simulation strategy, design, delivery and debriefing were guided by Nickson's IPO model.  Nickson, C.P., Petrosoniak, A., Barwick, S. et al. Translational simulation: from description to action. Adv Simul 6, 6 (2021)  Among many interesting elements, we reflected on the process of Systems focused debriefing, including some great work in this area by others.  Dubé, Mirette M. et al. PEARLS for Systems Integration: A Modified PEARLS Framework for Debriefing Systems-Focused Simulations. Simulation in Healthcare: The Journal of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare 14(5):p 333-342, October 2019.  Colman, N., Dalpiaz, A., Walter, S. et al. SAFEE: A Debriefing Tool to Identify Latent Conditions in Simulation-based Hospital Design Testing. Adv Simul 5, 14 (2020)  Bentley, S.K., McNamara, S., Meguerdichian, M. et al. Debrief it all: a tool for inclusion of Safety-II. Adv Simul 6, 9 (2021)  We discussed data strategies for translational simulation, and the challenges of generating actionable insights from translational simulation.  One other interesting aspect was one of the data collection methods, using post it notes to capture ‘in the moment' feelings.  Kolbe M, Rudolph JW. What's the headline on your mind right now? How reflection guides simulation-based faculty development in a master class. BMJ Simul Technol Enhanc Learn. 2018 Jul 9;4(3):126-132.  Nathan was also generous with his shout-outs to collaborators in the simulation and the scholarship of this project, including Simon Edgar, Dan Hufton, Vicky Tallentire and of course his co-authors Kathryn Twentyman and Katie Howie. Congratulations to Nathan and the team.  Happy listening!

Dan Barwick joins Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger on California Wine Country this week to talk about his impending return to England. He has been on CWC several times in recent years, the last time was this episode last August. He is one of the founders and the winemaker for Trecini Winery. They made their first Sauvignon Blanc in 1999. Dan has brought a New Zealand wine, a 2022 Babich Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough. It cost $4.99 at Bottle Barn. It's not a great wine but for $4.99 it's fine. There's no such thing as a terrible wine, as long as it's reasonably priced enough. - Dan Berger. Dan was born in Dover, England and worked at Harrod's London in the food hall where he saw a lot of wine. He moved to Sonoma in 1991 and has been making wine for thirty years. But he is moving back to England. They have a Chardonnay to taste, which is Russian River, 2022, barrel fermented in 500 liter neutral oak. It's one of his favorite Chardonnays that he has ever made. Clean crisp and immensely complex. Dan Berger says it will still improve with age, or even time in decanter. England is on the horizon, in particular the county of Kent where The Wine Garden of England is getting warmer and warmer. It is champagne country, says Dan Berger. The English have started making some great sparkling wines and they have one today. It is a non-vintage brut from Chapel Down. Dan Barwick tells the story that the timing was right to move back to England, for a combination of reasons. Dan Berger says that it is an exciting moment for English wine and that it is a well-timed move. They are tasting the wine from Chapel Down. It is made to emulate the style of Champagne and is "gorgeous." 16:00 What Dan Barwick Will Bring Back to England In England, Dan Barwick will do some consulting and will be able to bring all of his experience from California. He has already begun networking. He found an old friend he hadn't seen for forty years who says he has vineyards and asked if Dan could help him. Prospects are good. 23:00 Dan Berger: US Wine Consumer wine knowledge essentially zero. You have to hear Dan Berger speak truth to the people about how the average American wine consumer has zero knowledge of wine and what goes with what. It starts with his deadpan hilarious observation of Chardonnay on every table in a famous Chinese restaurant, where he was having the Gewurtztraminer.

Between 2006 and 2013, China's government poured enormous resources into its shipbuilding industry through various subsidies—from providing free coastal land to offering financing assistance for ship buyers. But estimating the true scale and impact of these policies is challenging, as governments are often opaque about their industrial support programs. In a paper in the Journal of Economic Perspectives, authors Panle Jia Barwick, Myrto Kalouptsidi, and Nahim Bin Zahur developed new methods for overcoming these measurement challenges and quantifying China's support for its shipbuilding industry.  Their research reveals which types of industrial policies work best, when they should be implemented, and why countries might pursue them even when the direct economic returns are low. These insights are particularly relevant today, as countries around the world are increasingly embracing industrial policies to support strategic sectors. Barwick and Kalouptsidi recently spoke with Tyler Smith about how they measured China's shipbuilding subsidies, why entry subsidies are particularly inefficient, and the importance of timing industrial support with market cycles
