Everyone remembers life's growing pains right after you leave your parents' home. For Jack Innanen, part of the ensemble of the new FX series Adults, there are certain things that made him feel like an adult really quick. "Tax season and when I'm working on my visa, those ones get me locked in. I'm like, 'Oh, I'm a man in the eyes of the government.'" Before Innanen was cast as Paul Baker on Adults—only the second project he auditioned for after moving to New York City from Canada—he was best known for his viral social media presence. "It's a completely different beast," he says about creating social content versus filming a show. "They're not the same at all." But he knows how fortunate he is. "I don't even know if I understand the trajectory to whatever mix of luck and serendipity I've found myself in." And he loves that Adults shows a group of young people trying to make sense of it all. "The veil of adulthood has come down, and I think the show really plays into that. It's trying to figure out who you are, how you exist as a proper adult." In this episode of The Difference a Dad Makes, hosts Brian Mattson and Dr. Jennifer L. Baker welcome Paul Baker, an experienced educator and former school principal, to discuss practical ways to build confidence in children. Paul shares insights from his career in education and his experiences as a father, offering real-life examples of how responsibility, chores and perseverance help instill confidence in kids. The conversation explores the value of allowing children to experience challenges, learn from failures and develop independence through everyday tasks. Whether you're a parent looking for strategies to encourage self-reliance or just hoping to understand how confidence is built over time, this episode provides meaningful stories, practical advice and engaging discussions on the importance of resilience in childhood. Episode Highlights [01:49] "I think you have to let them experience things. You have to require things of them. Jennifer and I were always very big on chores and it was a battle, but we stood together." [04:52] "We felt that it was good for children to sweat, to do something boring because there are a lot of things in life that are not fun but have to be done." [08:11] "We let our kids cook. There were some disasters but learning happens in those mistakes." [14:09] "The first time Jack buttoned his shirt by himself, he cried, Jessica cried and I cried. He worked hard for it and that was such a proud moment." [15:39] "There are winners and losers in competition. Not everything ends in a tie and not everybody gets a trophy. Understanding that is part of growing up." [22:07] "It's better to crash and burn in fourth grade than to wait until you're 18 and realize you're not the best at everything." Resources

Hello, I'm CJ Miller, host of the Spiritual Artist Podcast and YouTube channel. Today, I'm revisiting asemic writing—a profound way to tap into your unique creative voice. If you've ever felt constrained by traditional art forms or struggled to find your authentic expression, asemic writing offers a liberating alternative. In this episode, I'll introduce you to an exercise that combines asemic writing with music, helping you reconnect with the pure, unfiltered creativity that lies within you. Asemic writing is more than just abstract marks on a page; it's a way to access your creative DNA—those innate, original impulses that are often suppressed as we conform to societal norms. By engaging in this form of expression, you can bypass the conscious mind and connect directly with your intuitive self. Inspired by the teachings of Paul Baker in his book Integration of Abilities, we'll explore how integrating movement, music, and mark-making can lead to deeper creative breakthroughs. In my own artistic journey, I've discovered that true creativity isn't about imitating others but about discovering what makes your work uniquely yours. Through this exercise, we'll go back to the playful, uninhibited joy of childhood—when we were free to scribble, color, and create without judgment. I'll guide you through using simple tools like crayons and a spiral-bound tablet to explore your emotions and physical responses to music, allowing your true artistic self to emerge. Music is a powerful catalyst for creativity. In this exercise, we'll use it to evoke emotional responses that translate into your asemic writing. Whether you're feeling the rhythm of a fast-paced track or the calm of a soothing melody, your marks on the page will reflect your inner state. This process isn't about creating something beautiful in the conventional sense; it's about capturing the raw, visceral experience of being fully present in the moment. So, grab a box of crayons, find a quiet space, and let's begin this journey of self-discovery. By the end of this exercise, you'll have a series of pages that are a true reflection of your inner world. These marks are more than just art—they are a testament to your creative spirit. Join me in this exploration, and let's uncover the unique artistic expression that's waiting to be released. Thank you for being a part of the Spiritual Artist community.

It's a credit to the resilience of the gay community that when society tried to outlaw and silence them, they just created a language of their own to keep conversation (and gossip) alive. The language, polari, was born out of prejudice, and while it's now classified as endangered, many of its words are still used by us today. What were its many origins? When was it at its peak? And why did some of the gay community eventually start to turn its back on it?Kate's joined by Paul Baker, author of Fabulosa!: The Story of Polari, Britain's Secret Gay Language, to find out more. This episode was edited by Tom Delargy, and produced by Stuart Beckwith. Paul Baker is the author of the bestselling 'CAMP! The Story of the Attitude that Conquered the World'. Not only is the book fabulously funny but it also successfully captures what camp is all about (not a mean feat!) using a plethora of brilliant examples. There's only one problem: there's no way Paul could include everyone's favourite examples and only bits of one of the most camp things of all time - James Bond - made it into the book. David and Paul meet to put Bond in the camp spotlight.

As the old adage goes, attitude is everything. And if there's one attitude that stands proud above the rest it's the utterly fabulous, camp. Whether it's embodied in Disney villains or Oscar Wilde, there's a charm and defiance to camp that is both powerful and fun. In today's episode, Kate is joined by Paul Baker, author of Camp! My guest this week is Professor Paul Baker, a writer and linguist whose work includes some FASCINATING explorations of Polari, the secret 19-century queer language that existed in England a century ago. He's also delved deep into the history of British don't-say-gay laws, gay seafarers, and in an upcoming book about campy queer culture. Given his expertise in campy sitcoms, drag stars, and celebrated actresses, I have a feeling that he speaks a language in which listeners of this podcast will be particularly fluent. We'll have that conversation in a minute. First, a reminder that I've got a book coming out next year about queer sitcoms! It's called Hi Honey, I'm Homo, and pre-orders are open — head over to gaysitcoms.com to get all the details. Also, big thanks to everyone who supports The Sewers of Paris on Patreon! Patrons get hours of exclusive bonus videos about pop culture history, stickers and stuff in the mail, and shoutouts in YouTube videos.
We look into the crossover between the fields of linguistics, social history and folklore with an examination of the secret language Polari. Coming from 16th century roots, Polari is generally known in modern times as an underground gay language popular in the 1960s and 1970s, in no small part thanks to the Radio 4 comedy show Round the Horne and its characters Julian and Sandy. But, before this, other forms of the language existed between fairground workers, the theatrical community, dock workers and more. After a brief history of the development of Polari and a look at the film 'Putting on the Dish' which may have helped with the modern interest in Polari, we are joined by Prof. Paul Baker from Lancaster University, author of the book 'Fabulosa!'. He speaks with Dr Paul Cowdell of the Folklore Society on the topic. To watch the film 'Putting on the Dish', visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8yEH8TZUskFor more on Polari from Paul Baker's web pages, visit https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/staff/bakerjp/polari/home.htmTo support the Folklore Podcast and the Folklore Library and Archive in its mission to preserve and make freely available folklore materials for the future, please visit www.patreon.com/thefolklorepodcast

Many of us will know Bakes from his countless years of umpiring and scoring cricket on the Gold Coast as well as his quick wit and evergreen zingers. Not many though, would know that he had a playing career of his own before he began umpiring or that he was present when Shane Warne bowled his ‘Ball of the Century' to castle Mike Gatting. These are just some of the many stories that we dig into on this episode of The Hawk Cast with the one, the only – Paul Baker.
