If you follow the show, then you probably know that we've had a bogus ban on astronauts for quite some time now. In case you don't follow the show, let me just explain at the top here that it's been 2,220 days — more than six years — since an astronaut last appeared on The Colin McEnroe Show. But. The ban is over! We are astronautless no more! And so, this hour — and to celebrate Astronaughty Week — we bring you no fewer than THREE astronauts. We listen back to our (in)famous interviews with legends Buzz Aldrin and Scott Kelly. And then: a brand new interview with a real, live astronaut, former International Space Station Commander Chris Hadfield. The bogus ban is over! Don't let Colin tell you any different! If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, call or text the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988 or visit 988lifeline.org. It's free, confidential, and always available — in English and Spanish. GUESTS: Buzz Aldrin: A retired astronaut, engineer, and fighter pilot in the United States Air Force; he was the Lunar Module Pilot on Apollo 11, and he was one of the first two humans to walk on the Moon; his 2016 book is No Dream Is Too High: Life Lessons from a Man Who Walked on the Moon Chris Hadfield: An engineer, musician, and a retired astronaut and fighter pilot in the Canadian Air Command; his new book, The Defector, is his second novel Scott Kelly: An engineer and a retired astronaut and aviator in the United States Navy; his 2017 book is Endurance: A Year in Space, a Lifetime of Discovery The Colin McEnroe Show is available as a podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Amazon Music, TuneIn, Listen Notes, or wherever you get your podcasts. Chris Mason is a Professor of Genomics, Physiology, and Biophysics at Weill Cornell Medicine, and works with NASA on the impact of space travel on the human genome. Chris is a really big and really interesting thinker and has a book out, The Next 500 Years: Engineering Life to Reach New Worlds, in which he argues that humans have a moral duty to escape not only planet earth, but ultimately the solar system in order to save our species. He also suggests that genetic engineering will be needed in order to give us what he calls "armor on the inside" in order to survive on different planets. It's a good time to dive into these questions, given that we're in a new era in space travel, with helicopters flying around Mars and missions to both the moon and Mars being planned. We discuss the why, when and how of his 500-year plan to save humanity, which starts with establishing settlements on Mars. We also talk about his unusual twin study, examining the genetic impact of astronaut Scott Kelly's year in space by way of comparison to his now earthbound identical twin brother Mark Kelly, who is a former astronaut and now of course a Senator for the State of Arizona. We also debate the ethics of genetic research here on earth right now, and the risks that it will worsen social inequalities. And obviously we talk about the sci-fi TV series The Expanse - what it got right as well as what it got wrong. It's a wide-ranging conversation - I hope you enjoy it. More from Chris Mason  Read his new book “The Next 500 Years: Engineering Life to Reach New Worlds” (2021) and his op-ed “On Exploring Mars and Saving Endangered Species.”  For more, see his ten phase plan of achieving life on Mars and check out the work that his laboratory - The Mason Lab - does.  Follow him on twitter: @mason_lab  Also mentioned In his book, A Tract on Monetary Reform, Keynes wrote “In the long run, we're all dead” (p.80).    In his speech, Existentialism is a Humanism, Sartre claimed that “existence precedes essence.”  Read The NASA Twins Study by Mason and Endurance: A Year in Space, a Lifetime of Discovery (2017) by Scott Kelly  Klara and the Sun (2021) by Kazuo Ishiguro The Rise of the Meritocracy (1958) by Michael Young  The Fall of Meritocracy (2015) by Toby Young  Watch The Expanse The Dialogues Team Creator: Richard Reeves Research: Ashleigh Maciolek Artwork: George Vaughan Thomas Tech Support: Cameron Hauver-Reeves Music: "Remember" by Bencoolen (thanks for the permission, guys!)

Scott Kelly is a retired NASA astronaut and a veteran of four space flights.  He is best known for spending nearly a year on the International Space Station and the second most time in space of any American.  He recently wrote a book now available about his space travels called Endurance: A Year in Space, A Lifetime of Discovery.   Some interesting insights from this episode:  He struggled academically for many years until he read Tom Wolfe's The Right Stuff which would finally give him the focus he needed to turn himself around and become a model student.  Despite the odds of success of becoming an astronaut being stacked against him, his attitude was if you don't even try, then you know for certain that the odds are zero.  Learn how spending a year in space tests your psychological endurance as much as your physical endurance.  When you're doing a very challenging task, try to focus only on the things you can control and then ignore the rest.  His mother's passing a rigorous physical exam to become a police officer served as a role model for Scott overcoming his own challenges.  Excellence is the ability to focus 100% of your ability and attention on one thing.
