Our good buddy Justin Halpern (of Harley Quinn and Abbott Elementary fame) takes some time away from his luxury box to return to the show for a World Series preview. The ALCS & NLCS were packed with highlights: clutch double-plays, out-of-the-park homers, and the Best Player Of All Time™. Can the World Series itself hope to match, or have the Dodgers sucked all of the fun out of baseball? We also set off Justin's trap card and get him ranting about another baseball juggernaut: the Savannah Bananas. And then we'll backflip into the Funbag, answering real questions from real listeners.Do you want to hear your question answered on the pod? Well, give us a call at 909-726-3720. Oleg Lyalin, was a KGB officer whose actions would provide British intelligence with pivotal information during the Cold War. I speak with Richard Kerbaj, the author of a new book, 'The Defector,' which chronicles Lyalin's story. Lyalin was trained with The KGB's Department V, which was their sabotage and assassinations department. He was sent to the UK under the guise of a trade official, where he was tasked with gathering intelligence and plotting assassinations of British politicians, paralysing the British economy and ways to starve the population by attacking emergency food supplies. In early 1971, overwhelmed by personal and professional turmoil, Lyalin approached MI5, revealing his true identity and the KGB's sinister plans against the UK. City Councilmembers are angry at him. The clerk and recorder is accusing him of “cowardice.” Former supporters are abandoning him. But what will the average Denver voter think about how Mayor Mike Johnston handled laying off 169 workers this week? Denver Post city hall reporter Elliott Wenzler and our politics and green chile correspondent Justine Sandoval join producer Paul Karolyi to talk about “The Hunger Games,” as some city employees described the layoffs this week. Plus, we respond to Defector's take on ‘Why Denver Sucks' and all our wins and fails of the week. Paul talked about Flock cameras, Playa Bowls, and his conversation with at-large City Councilmember Sarah Parady earlier this week. Justine talked about an emu and DPS' heat day. Elliott discussed the big local TV merger and the Denver Zoo lion cam that she read about in Hey Denver. Some City Council members are hosting a webinar for city workers this Sunday at 4pm. A breakaway winner was expected for stage 20 of the Tour de France, but did anyone expect it to be Kaden Groves?Iain Treloar is joined by Joshua Robinson of the Wall Street Journal, Patrick Redford of Defector, and Jacob Whitehead from The Athletic to discuss the penultimate stage of this year's race.
From the rain-drenched cobbles of the Champs Élysées, Iain Treloar is joined by Joshua Robinson of the Wall Street Journal and Patrick Redford of Defector to discuss Montmartre, an epic stage win, and the whiplash of arriving in Paris. Also: the famous Escape Collective Tour Award Show.
The final mountain stage of the Tour de France – shortened though it was for cattle-related reasons – went to Thymen Arensman as Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogačar mostly watched each other on the final summit finish of the race.Iain is joined by Patrick Redford of Defector and Joshua Robinson of the Wall Street Journal to talk about the racing but also the broader strokes.
Pablo Torre, host of Pablo Torre Finds Out, shares with Drew and Roth what thing he's found out about lately. For instance, he found out that the NFLPA is a flaming shitwreck! Then, will the NBA gambling stories remain mini-scandals in the public eye right up until the moment that someone openly rigs an NBA Finals? If a time trial happens at the Tour de France and Ronan isn't there to see it, does it make a sound? Caley, Jonny, and Iain are joined by Defector's Patrick Redford to talk through a TT that ended up tighter (in some ways) than we expected. Plus, more on the 2012 Sky/Brailsford saga and the photographers are in trouble.
Our good buddy Justin Halpern returns to the show, giving us the on-the-ground report from LA where ICE raids are still definitely happening. Justin also wants to talk about the MLB owners: they don't even seem to like the sport they own, so what are they even doing here? What a stage. The stage of the Tour so far? We think so. It had everything, from breakaway wins to big GC crashes to finish line protesters. Caley, Jonny, and Iain are joined by Joshua Robinson of the Wall Street Journal and (briefly) Defector's Patrick Redford to talk through the day. Today's podcast title brought to you by Jason Gay of the Wall Street Journal.
Meet my friends, Clay Travis and Buck Sexton! If you love Verdict, the Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show might also be in your audio wheelhouse. Politics, news analysis, and some pop culture and comedy thrown in too. Here’s a sample episode recapping four Tuesday takeaways. Give the guys a listen and then follow and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. Trump's Tariffs Paying Off The economic impact of Trump-era tariffs, with the hosts highlighting a rare federal budget surplus in June 2025. They argue that despite media narratives, tariffs have not triggered significant inflation and instead have generated substantial revenue. The conversation also critiques Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell for high interest rates, which they claim have frozen the housing market and stifled economic growth. The hosts advocate for rate cuts to stimulate recovery, pointing to record-high stock market performance and strong job growth under Trump’s second term. Gov. Gavin Salesman Clay and Buck analyze California Governor Gavin Newsom’s national ambitions, suggesting he is positioning himself as a frontrunner for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination. They critique Newsom’s evasive responses on controversial issues like transgender policies and youth gender surgeries, portraying him as a polished but insubstantial figure who avoids taking firm stances. The discussion frames Newsom as emblematic of a Democratic strategy that relies on charm and ambiguity rather than policy clarity. Illegal Immigration Realities Deep dive into the pressing issues surrounding illegal immigration, border security, and the economic impact of immigration policies in the United States. The hosts open with a discussion on the controversial “Alligator Alcatraz” ICE facility near the Everglades, using it as a springboard to critique the media’s portrayal of immigration enforcement and the emotional narratives often used by the political left. A major theme throughout this hour is the economic burden of illegal immigration, with Clay and Buck arguing that the influx of undocumented migrants contributes to rising housing costs, overcrowded emergency rooms, and inflated hotel prices—particularly in cities like New York City. They highlight how Airbnb regulations and the use of hotels to house migrants have disrupted local markets, driving up costs for everyday Americans. Can You Believe This Question? Media bias and cultural influence, particularly in sports journalism. Clay and Buck react to a viral moment from the MLB All-Star Game press conference, where a reporter from Defector confronted MLB officials over Georgia’s voting laws. Clay and Buck criticize what they call “agenda journalism” and highlight the irony of punishing Atlanta—a majority Black city—for state-level legislation.
