“I've never understood this joke, but then I've never been to Earth.”Shooting for the Stars on a Shoestring BudgetIn 1996, writer/director Cory McAbee set out to make a wholly unique film that blended elements of science fiction, Western, comedy and musical genres. With a background in music and short films, McAbee threw everything he had into crafting the world of The American Astronaut. Shot on stark black and white 35mm film, this low-budget labor of love caught the attention of the Film Independent Spirit Awards, earning a Best Cinematography nomination. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we kick off the 2002 Film Independent Spirit Awards Best Cinematography Nominees series with a conversation about McAbee's 2001 film The American Astronaut.Traversing the Quirky Universe of The American AstronautOur discussion launches into the film's fascinating blend of genre tropes and cinematic influences. The lo-fi special effects, particularly in depicting space travel, somehow work perfectly in the established universe. We marvel at the creative framing and cinematography that elevate the low-budget production design. The memorable musical numbers get us singing along. At the heart of the story, we explore how this space Western playfully taps into themes of masculinity and loneliness across the cosmos.Further Points of DiscussionAppreciating the authentic, understated performancesNoting the film's multitude of cinematic influencesStruggling with the underdeveloped antagonist storylineReveling in the earworm-inducing soundtrackComparing The American Astronaut to other quirky genre-bendersA Flawed but Ambitious DebutThe American Astronaut is a testament to the power of a singular creative vision. While the ending stumbles a bit in its execution, the totality of Cory McAbee's debut feature is an undeniably striking and inventive piece of independent filmmaking. This episode of the Black is America podcast tells the story of Guy Bluford, the first African American astronaut in space. We'll explore his early life and inspirations, his path to NASA, the historical significance of his achievement, and his spaceflights. Guy Bluford's Upbringing and Early Inspiration - Guy Bluford was born in 1942 in Philadelphia, PA and became fascinated with aviation and engineering from a young age.  - He was inspired by the Tuskegee Airmen and other pioneering African American aviators who were breaking barriers in the 1940s and 50s. - Bluford joined the Air Force, became a pilot, and flew combat missions during the Vietnam War, further fueling his passion for aerospace. Becoming an Astronaut - In the late 1970s, Bluford was selected for NASA's astronaut training program along with other African Americans like Ron McNair and Fred Gregory. - This was part of the first class of Space Shuttle astronauts as NASA prepared to launch a new era of spaceflight. Making History in Space - On August 30, 1983, Bluford launched into space aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger, becoming the first African American astronaut in space. - Original Tuskegee Airmen and other African American aviation pioneers attended the launch in recognition of Bluford's achievement. - Bluford flew a total of four Space Shuttle missions between 1983 and 1992, logging nearly 700 hours spent in space. Inspiring Future Generations - Bluford's accomplishment built on the struggles of earlier pioneers like Ed Dwight Jr. and inspired future African Americans to pursue careers in the space program. - After retiring from NASA, Bluford remained committed to encouraging youth, especially minorities, to pursue STEM careers.  - His pioneering journey from Philadelphia to the cosmos opened doors for future African American astronauts, scientists, and engineers. Conclusion - In conclusion, Guy Bluford broke barriers as the first African American in space, both symbolically and literally reaching new heights.  His achievement highlighted the perseverance and talent within the African American community and paved the way for greater diversity in space exploration. In this episode, we reach for the stars with Irish American astronaut Dr. Cady Coleman, a veteran of two Space Shuttle missions and 159 days in orbit on the International Space Station (ISS).Cady says she's one-quarter Irish on both sides, but that it adds up to much more than half. When not exploring outer space, she's exploring Irish music on the flute and tin whistle, even playing with the Chieftains. On St. Patrick's Day, she live-streamed her playing a tin whistle from Paddy Moloney and an old wooden flute from Matt Molloy while floating in space aboard the ISS as a way of sharing her cosmic experience with them and the entire Global Irish Nation. We discuss her journey into the exclusive ranks of space travelers, the drama of the mission aborted six seconds before liftoff, the sights and sounds of the International Space Station, and “the grief in leaving” space and adjusting to life back on earth. As this episode airs, Russia has invaded Ukraine with Putin, even threatening the safety of the ISS, but Cady talks of the cooperation among all nations involved with the space station and the international structures in place to ensure this orbiting outpost remains neutral territory.Oh, she also was a consultant for Sandra Bullock on “Gravity,” dueted with Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull from the ISS, has done several TED Talks, is a successful keynote speaker, hosts the outstanding podcast Mission Interplanetary, and plays with fellow astronauts Stephen Robinson and Chris Hadfield in the musical group Bandella, and is featured on an Irish postage stamp! Let's light this candle!Cady's Links:Website: Cady ColemanTwitter: Astro_CadyFacebook: AstrocadyInstagram: astro_cadyPodcast: Mission InterplanetaryVideo: St. Patrick's Day from the ISS

The song was partly inspired by an interview here on the show with Jerry Linenger, the American Astronaut who spent some months aboard the space station Mir, and used his time in orbit to share stories, memories, and thoughts in letters to his two-year-old son back on Earth.

I started my show the day after Gabrielle Giffords was nearly assassinated in Tucson (01/08/11). The entire community was in a state of shock and for this host I was just Trying to get my sea legs on the radio. While the community was mourning my guest was going through a transformation of his own. From Space Navigator to family pillar, from Desert Storm Patriot to healer, from an abstract belief in god to a deepening in his faith. My guest sat by his wife beds side while she healed. Because of modern medicine and competent surgeons she survived, although some close to her did not. She rehabilitated in the finest clinics in America slowly relearning to speak and eat and all other daily living skills we take for granted. Maybe my guest did to but after that tragic day he was by her side every step of the way. Pulling from the Cosmos a deep well of intestinal fortitude that he poured into Gabby. As she mended the couple realized they had reached yet another demarcation point in their lives. No longer was she just a politician and he a gutty astronaut. They were now public figures that gained international attention for overcoming the odds. Whether or not they wanted this, natural events gave them no choice. Maybe it was not having a choice that changed my guest. As we sit here today my guests identical twin brother just broke the record for most consecutive days in space by an American Astronaut. My guest has taken his fair share of trips into space using what we know of modern engineering. His aerospace acumen is such that he became a NASA space shuttle pilot in 1996 and made four trips into space including the Space Shuttle Endeavor in 2011. He is also a navy captain and naval aviator flying missions in the first Gulf War. While he has consistently sacrificed for his country he is now an American searching for responsible solutions in one of the most irresponsible times in our countries governmental history. Mass shootings have occurred in South Carolina, Connecticut Colorado and Oregon since January 2011 and despite heavy support from President Barack Obama no legislation has been passed to limit the ability of unhinged or mentally unstable individuals to get their hands on assault weapons. Nothing has been done to change the background checks before you can purchase guns. We have a society that glorifies violence and many big companies who would just assume to see the status quo stay the same. That's where my guest comes in rallying victims family members and trying to change hearts and minds so that are kids can be safer, our discourse can be civil and more pragmatic approach to governing can evolve. It seems logical that would NASA select military test pilots to be the first astronauts, right? They were used to risk. They were good with machines. They already explored extreme environments. But these skills were not unique to test pilots. There were also mountaineers, scuba divers, and explorers. They too were considered. So why did NASA choose test pilots? Matthew Hersch, assistant professor of history at Harvard University and author of Inventing the American Astronaut (Palgrave Macmillan, 2012), talks about this and other aspects of the astronaut program. See Hear is ready to start the new year with a musical sci-fi road film….but nothing like Hope / Crosby / Lamour films.   Bernard, Tim and Maurice are once again joined by Mike White of The Projection Booth to talk about Cory Mcabee’s feature film debut from 2001, The American Astronaut. It’s all too easy to describe this film as a mashup of styles (usually starting with “David Lynch meets….”). The truth is Cory Mcabee has come up with something unique while acknowledging films he obviously loves. The narrative covers Sam Curtis – delivery man for hire who has to make a series of trades before he can collect a reward. All the while he has a nemesis chasing him around the universe waiting to forgive him…so he can kill him….. and people burst into song. Sounds straightforward? It ain’t, and yet it is. This episode Dan Hogan & Sally Ann join us to celebrate the perms in space! Starcrash is a 1978 low budget wannabe Star Wars film featuring Christopher Plummer and The Hoff. What more could you ask for? Set your computer wave to monitor our friction trail and prepare yourself for some robot chauvinism. Watch the film (at your own risk): The bad news, a classic of such vintage is not really found streaming at the moment. There is a Blu-ray at Amazon though. You may also find it on Youtube. For how long? Only Akton knows. On with the teardown! Paul does the first Elle impression, while Chris does a horrible Church Lady. The sets remind Sally of the Farragut Film Studios that offer a tour of their Star Trek sets once a year. 70s films love public address systems. Our first perm, Akton played by Marjoe Gortner is also in one of Dan’s favorite bad movies, Food of the Gods. According to Paul’s research on the Starcrash imdb page all the dialogue in the entire film was replaced. Is this why everyone is so cheery? It turns out Elle’s voice, Hamilton Camp is also the voice of Gizmoduck from Darkwing Duck. He did voices for The Tick and many more shows. Chris wonders if Elle is short for Lolipop? He is an Android. Christopher Plummer IS THE EMPEROR. Dan tells us, “It’s not the Force.” So what are Akton’s powers? Limitless? Is it all about the full body perm? Sally & Paul think Akton could be a Time Lord. Ele beaten like the fax machine in Office Space. Is that Zardoz shooting lasers at the cavemen? Akton not using The Force, is also not using a lightsaber. Maybe? Dan thinks more movies should feature cavemen beatings. Unless of course it’s the friendly Captain Caveman. Best answer to how main characters inexplicably survive “We’re not like most people.” Why is Christopher Plummer in this film? His answer, Rome. Dan relates similar stories about why actors do bad films from Elijah Wood and Bruce Campbell. How Star Wars Episode IV should have ended. Sally was very excited to see The Hoff in “his pretty lady makeup.” Sally & Dan think this movie feels much longer than it is. Yet, they both felt that it was so bad it was good. Chris & Paul agree. Dan recommends Galaxy of Terror and Chris says you should check our Forbidden Planet. Sally needs more recommendations! Paul suggests Logan’s Run while Chris & Dan praise Attack The Block. How about Moon, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension, Tron and The American Astronaut. Thanks so much to our friends Sally Ann and Dan Hogan for joining us. A lesson learned? We also get to see a haunted coffee shop and we discuss the Ethics of cockroach control. What else can little timmy do with that tech? Sit Back, Relax, and take a sip of your coffee. But don;t mind the roach watching you from across the room. Infact, Please don;t piss him off either.
