Moon and Spica

The full Moon has an especially close companion tonight: Spica, the brightest star of Virgo. From the eastern half of the country, they’ll appear to almost touch each other as night falls. They’ll be a bit farther apart for those in the west, but still close. A dozen American astronauts walked on the Moon, with the final steps coming half a century ago. Their missions are among those commemorated today – the International Day of Human Spaceflight. The day was established by the United Nations, in 2011, to “celebrate the beginning of the space era for all mankind.” That era began on this date in 1961, when the Soviet Union launched the first human into space. Yuri Gagarin made one orbit around Earth aboard Vostok 1, then parachuted to the ground after re-entering the atmosphere. Exactly 20 years later, the United States launched the first space shuttle. The U.N. General Assembly named those missions, along with the first Moon landing, as motivation for the Day of Human Spaceflight. The first celebration of the date came in 2001. A private group created “Yuri’s Night,” which continues today. It combines science and engineering with music, art, and other activities. Space centers, museums, planetariums, and other venues host events to celebrate the date. If you can’t make it, though, celebrate on your own by watching the Moon – the site of the first human steps beyond our own planet. Script by Damond Benningfield

The FRAM2 Astronauts have returned safetly after their "work-week" long mission in polar orbit. One thing about these private missions is that they can happen so fast! And that's the theme for this week: discussing our top 3 favorite experiements shared live, in-flight by the FRAM 2 Crew. But being such a groundbreaking project, in 1964 NASA paid tribute to Mercury with a four metre high stainless steel monument with a time capsule that would remain sealed beneath it until the year 2464, five centuries later. What was so significant about Mercury? Coupled with reported internal NASA concerns related to the Starliner's Reaction Control System (RCS) thrusters - it's clear there isn't 100% confidence & more options needs to be considered. That means engineering is involved! Holy texts and salvation ideology. Saints and martyrs. True believers and apostates. This isn't a religion — this is human spaceflight. So says Roger Launius, NASA's former Chief Historian, in his 2013 paper Escaping Earth: Human Spaceflight as Religion. For the start of our ninth year of the Space Policy Edition, Dr. Launius joins the show to discuss the ways in which human spaceflight exhibits characteristics commonly seen in modern religions, how his thesis has evolved in the past decade with the rise of Elon Musk and his view of Mars as humanity's salvation, and how exploring secular activities through a religious lens can be instructive in understanding their adherents and support. Boeing's entry into NASA's commercial crew program for the International Space Station, has suffered multiple technical delays, but has launched with two astronauts soon. The test flight is critical both for Boeing and for NASA, who need a backup system to guarantee crew access to orbit with two redundant systems. The fourth system besides NASA, Boeing and SpaceX, is the Sierra Space Dream Chaser lifting body vehicle. An uncrewed cargo version is now at NASA's Kennedy Space Center for testing and will be launched by a ULA Vulcan Centaur rocket. Soon, there may be four separate ways to lift humans into orbit from US soil. * * *Want to watch this podcast as a video? On this Thanksgiving week episode, we're breaking down Starship's latest test flight - IFT2 and comparing it to the first integrated test flight (a.k.a. IFT1). We think there are four major WINS for SpaceX, NASA, and humanity after IFT2's successful test launch. There is ALOT of work before humans can launch onboard, but IFT1 and IFT2 were only 6 months apart and they had to rebuild the pad. With a great looking launchpad post-launch, we expect LOTS of progress in 2024 for Starship!  This episode is for folks of all levels of space nerdom, whether you're waiting for updates on Starship daily, or just finding out about the world most powerful rocket ever made...there's something for everyone. It's a true historic moment in space history that won't be fully appreciated (even by the most hardcore) for how special this moment is until the future. With a rocket system that has TWICE the thrust of the Saturn V - we're thankful for the balance between NASA & SpaceX (and the FAA) that this rocket is being developed! Scott ‘Maker' Tingle is a former navy test pilot, an astronaut, and the Head of Human Space Flight at NASA's Johnson Space Center. As a young boy growing up in the sixties, Scott's interest in space was piqued by the images of Neil Armstrong walking on the Moon. Although he went on to have a successful career in the navy, he never gave up on his childhood dream of becoming an astronaut, and finally, when he was in his early forties, Scott was selected as part of a team to travel to the International Space Station.
