200 years after the Warriors of Light saved the world from Exdeath, a new group of heroes must band together to defeat an evil that threatens to usurp the crystals.

The wise sage Ghido speaks of an ancient tree in the Great Forest of Moore where evil spirits were sealed. Over the centuries, the concentration of their malice formed a unified evil being: Exdeath, who wishes to return the world to void. The Warriors of Light must fight him on behalf of the crystals, which created the world within the void.

Much like the Final Fantasy series itself, this episode is varied and packed full of goodness! There's also a small detour into some Super Mario World talk. Final Fantasy IV & VI (II & III on the SNES) are considered by many to be among the best in the series. But what about the forgotten Fantasy; Final Fantasy V? I finally played it (no pun intended), and I gotta tell ya, it's just as good. Maybe even a little better. I fucking love it.    The story is a little on the shallow side, but the game's extraordinary job system more than makes up for it.  The level of customization you're presented with in regards to how you assemble your team is just insane, and it made for one of the best JRPG experiences I've ever had. So good!!   My guest this week is longtime show supporter Ben Beaulieu, and we had a hell of a time talking about a hell of a game. In this episode we go over all the new units and events as per usual. Galuf looks amazing! 50% damage mitigation is crazy, and he's a great tank overall. Why do we have to farm all these new units out though? Why is this looking like DLC: get a brand new unit, JK you gotta unlock him fully. This is true for all 3 of this weeks units, plus the previous few weeks as well. This needs to stop... just give us the full units. Exdeath is looking like a fantastic mage (as EXpected). He pumps out damage and never drops his quad cast. Krile is hard to decipher. Due to the unique mechanics of evoke damage, its sometimes difficult to stack these types of units up against other more straight forwards DPS. That being said, she looks good overall, just difficult to make a real comparison because the place where you would use a unit like her is very different. Finally, we discuss the current state of the tank meta, the story so far and what we love/hate about it. Plus we have some good laughs about the Emporer and Aldore. Hope you all enjoy! Bartz, Lenna, and Faris have decided to tag along with Galuf to defeat Exdeath once and for all, a decision that takes them to a whole new world. There, they meet Exdeath's coterie of dipshits in his meat castle. We pick up with World 2 to talk about the remainder of Final Fantasy V, which swings from high systemic highs to low grindy lows.

The Chocobros have all completed their journey. We talk about the end game, look back at all the good times we've had in Final Fantasy V and talk about how awesome our fans are.

Two of the brothers have conquered Exdeath, while one has been stopped by the maw of doom, Twintania. Gogo has been felled, but where does he fall into our family tree? The end approaches for Final Fantasy V, but will the Chocobros all be able to bring down the Void Caller? Also there's a very scary robot down there in the rift.

Jake has taken gone through the rift, fought Exdeath and a hell mime as Zack is scouring the lands in order to find those pesky seals. What do maiden's kisses look like? Bring your 5 person chicken bucket and find out this week!

After two weeks the Chocobros are back! Zack and Jacob are looking to break those pesky seals while being tripped up traversing the land. Exdeath is blowing up the world, or maybe just taking landmarks and putting them somewhere else.

Lenna keeps on poisoning herself with Dragongrass, Zack learns about the place that ExDeath was born by the wise wizard turtle. Of course it's haunted. It had to be haunted, right? Jake was very disappointed by the lakes and mountains. Squareenix announced some big stuff at E3 that we discuss, and we're all gosh darn excited about it.

In leg five, the brothers finally encounter Exdeath after meeting Final Fantasy Five's new child prodigy, Krile. After being banished, Galuf and the others chase him down to put an end to him once and for all. The brothers sing, forget the names of iconic characters, and discuss the value of min-maxing your party. WHAT FORTUITOUS TIMING.

Bartz's dad is a d*ck. In this leg, we learn more about the tragic backstories of our intrepid heroes while running around the map and trying to stop Exdeath's return. Adamantoise returns, Archeoavis stops Zack in his tracks, and we get distracted for ten minutes talking about cartoon food. Also, Cheeto undergoes a harrowing ordeal (but he turns out okay).

The Final Fantasy Series, Part 2 In this episode: The Final Fantasy series has lots of sequels and spinoffs that aren’t part of the mainline, numbered series. There are some sequels, some movies, and some mashups like Kingdom Hearts that just take the FF characters and give them a new world to explore together. Some are good and some (like the new Justice Monsters 5) are total garbage. But which are which? (Hint: The new Kingsglaive movie is awesome.) We discuss our thoughts on Final Fantasy MMOs, and the gist of it is that both of us wish they had called them Final Fantasy Online instead of mainline numbered games. We have played both FFXI and FFXIV, and XIV felt more like a Final Fantasy game, even though it being an MMORPG made it so that the story couldn’t be anywhere near as compelling as the single-player installments. Do the old-school Final Fantasy games (I-VI) hold up to modern standards? Some of them really do! But which ones? Bwahahahah, listen to find out! We both love love love the remasters and re-releases of the series. More people get to play the amazing games on whatever system they want, either on a new console like the Playstation Vita, iOS or Android, or even PC through services like Steam. Plus, we’re fans of all the HD textures and new sprites/animations. It’s a win-win for us (and for you folks who’ve never played them before!) Our Least Favorite Final Fantasy? III all the way. Not the Final Fantasy III that was released on the SNES (that was actually VI, but III with the poorly paced story, the crippled job system, and the terrible player messaging that kept you unable to progress. Avoid it at all costs (unless you’re a completionist like Void) Our Favorite Final Fantasy, though? IX all the way. But we also have fondness for VIII for the best opening scene of any FF (link below) and V because it wasn’t translated into English for so long that it took effort and dedication to play. Favorite Villain for us? This is a tough one. You’ll hear about it when you listen! But just so you know...Exdeath from FFV, well, he’s a tree. For serious. Favorite characters? Again, a totally tough question, but it has changed over the years. Vivi is a constant from FFIX, but there are others we talk about, too. Favorite Scenes? The opera FFVI ‘Maria and Draco’ (Aria di Mezzo Carattere), The Ending to FFIX when Garnet is Queen and they do “I Want to Be Your Canary” again and then Zidane and Garnet are reunited, and The Opening to FFVIII (Liberi Fatali). Where is the best place to start for newbies to FF series? (asked by @chrisevans17 and @DestenLee on Twitter). Probably FFX for the overall experience, but we go into lots of others for various reasons, all depending on your tastes in gaming. But the biggest surprise? Not Final Fantasy VII. Never FFVII first. And we’ll tell you why.
