Nancy J. Duncan has had an eclectic career spanning over 50 years of experience in the performing arts as a dancer, educator, producing director, manager, and arts management consultant.Nancy's dance training started under Nevorah Adams in South Dakota and it was through Nevorah's hosting of a summer dance residency taught by Loyce Houlton and two of her dancers, Frances Machala and David Voss, that her passion for dancing fully ignited. Under the tutelage of Houlton and her beautiful, diverselyskilled dancers and many guest artists at the Contemporary Dance Playhouse in Minneapolis, later renamed Minnesota Dance Theater, Nancy developed her skills as a dance teacher and performer.Upon moving to New York City in 1981, Nancy began forming her own artistic vision and mission greatly inspired by Loyce Houlton's vision. Working in partnership with composer Scott Killian and dancer Jackie Goodrich, and in consultation with Lawrence Rhodes, esteemed dancer, teacher and Chair of the New York University Tisch School for the Arts Dance department, Nancy conceived and founded CoDanceCo (collaborative dance company).Nancy and her team established CoDanceCo as a production company devoted to nurturing the creative development of dance artists and providing audience access to outstanding dance artistry that reflected the creativity and eclecticism of contemporary dance. CoDanceCo was designed as a highly flexible organizational model that could adapt to the ever-changing world of dance creators, performers, collaborators, educators, presenters, and audiences.From 1982-1991 Duncan commissioned and presented works created by 28 choreographers, 14 composers, and 50 dancers. Choreographers commissioned over the years include Eiko & Koma, Ralph Lemon, Susan Marshall, Bebe Miller, Mark Morris, Charles Moulton, Ohad Naharin, Doug Varone, Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane, among others. Duncan's work through CoDanceCo garnered Duncan a 1991 New York Dance and Performance Award Citation (aka Bessie).Highlights from 1991-2003 include serving as the artistic director for London Contemporary Dance Theatre; producer of a four-week British dance festival in New York City, project management for Arts International, and Community Outreach Programs Director for Mikhail Baryshnikov's White Oak Dance Project production PastForward, touring both nationally and internationally.From 1996-2003, under the umbrella of CoDanceCo, Duncan managed to keep producing projects to support dance artists and their audiences through her membership in the New York State DanceForce. The projects were accomplished in partnership with NY state artists, presenters, and educators. In 2003 Duncanrelocated to Long Island and established a new home base for her work through CoDanceCo. During this time Duncan also served as a member of the Suffolk County Citizens Arts Advisory Board, became a founding member of the Patchogue Arts Council, served on the Board of the Patchogue Theater, among other opportunities.In 2006, Duncan was introduced to Pierre Dulaine's arts-in-education, social-emotional in-school residency program titled “Dancing Classrooms.” Working in partnership with Dulaine, Duncan secured a two-year grant from the Dana Foundation to have CoDanceCo become the licensed national network affiliate site on Long Island. Pierre and his staff trained Duncan and a team of teaching artists in the Dancing Classrooms syllabus and the company launched its first in-school residencies in the winter of 2008. Since the founding of DancingClassrooms on Long Island, CoDanceCo's teaching artists have touched the lives of over 30,000 youth, adults, educators and families with the transformative power of Dancing Classrooms. For youth and adults alike, the program creates meaningful social connections, inspires respect for diversity, and instills self-confidence all through the joy of social dance.

Fresh off of scoring Evil Does Not Exist, composer Eiko Ishibashi joins The Film Scorer podcast! Evil Does Not Exist is Eiko's second collaboration with acclaimed director Ryusuke Hamaguchi, and the film itself actually stemmed from Eiko approaching Ryusuke regarding providing visuals for her live performance. Evil Does Not Exist grew out of that, while also spawning the film Gift, a sort of "composer's cut" of Evil Does Not Exist, which removes spoken dialogue and focuses on Eiko's music. Not surprisingly, we compare and contrast her work on Evil Does Not Exist and her prior score, Drive My Car (the Oscar winner for Best International Film). Along the way, we also cover things like Eiko's approach to music and preference to giving control to the director, trends in Japanese film music, and more.  Note that this is an interpreted interview, so you'll hear snippets of Eiko's responses in Japanese but the answers are primarily via English translation. In this episode, Maki and Simone are once again joined by Julian Houseman, and they chat with the lovely Eiko Kodama, from Kodama Jozo in Akita Prefecture. Kodama Jozo was founded in 1879 in picturesque Katagami City, Akita Prefecture, northwest of Japan.  Originally, the Kodama family started their business by making soy sauce and miso for local consumers.  Production of these quality “fermented” food products represented by “Yamakyu” brands still remains an important part of Kodama Jozo's business. It was the second generation of the business that began brewing sake at Kodama Jozo. In 1913, Tomokichi Kodama began making sake by the name 'TAIHEIZAN' (太平山). This brand name comes from towering mountain in Akita City, Mt. Taihei (“Great Peaceful Mountain”) which for centuries has been the area's spiritual symbol. Eiko Kodama is married to the 5th generation, and current, president of Kodama Jozo, Shinichiro Kodama. Both Eiko and Shin have been guests on the TWTT Project twice: for session #12 in August 2020, and again for session #61 in October 2021. Earlier this year, Simone had the fortunate pleasure of visiting the Kodamas at their brewery in Akita Prefecture. Earlier this month, Eiko made her first trip to Australia, visiting Melbourne, (Simone's hometown), for the Australian Sake Festival, held at Queen Victoria Market. We chat to Eiko about her first time in Australia, the Australian Sake Festival, her family's sake and brewery, and learn a little about what she was doing before marrying into a sake brewery family. When she was 8 years old, Grace Eiko Thomson was uprooted from her home in Vancouver, BC and sent to the Minto Mines Japanese Canadian Internment Camp. She was one of an estimated 21,000 Japanese Canadians who were interned by the government during the Second World War. In this episode, Grace tells her story.

The Ukrainians who can't get their children home from Russia A group of Ukrainian children are stuck in Russia after parents living under Russian occupation accepted an offer to send them to a summer camp on the Black Sea. Before the end of their holiday, their home towns were retaken by Ukrainian forces. BBC Russian's Nina Nazarova tells us how some parents are still unable to get their children home. Mark and Alex are, once again, in hot pursuit of Kuja on the Lost Continent. The chase takes the party to Esto Gaza, a seemingly sacred town that seems to be very peaceful. It's a short stay however, and the hunt continues into Mount Gulug. The dead volcano can be quite dangerous with some tough enemies, but Eiko is saved and Zorn & Thorn finally defeated for good. Hilda is also found at the bottom of Mount Gulug, and everyone returns to Lindblum where she agrees to change Cid back into a human.

Mark and Alex make their escape out of Kuja's secret lair, the Desert Palace. The name holds its own as it is filled with some pretty awesome structures, rooms, and decorations. All, unfortunately, designed to keep prisoners trapped inside. As the party makes their escape Eiko is kidnapped by none other than Zorn and Thorn, creating another issue. Kuja also makes his escape to the Hilde Garde Mk I, and heads to the Lost Continent with Zidane & co. following on the Blue Narciss ship.

HEH. That describes this season pretty well. Because it's all comedies! Whether it's Spy x Family or Spy (the x being silent) Family, this anime season is full of gimmicky meme characters and mega hot moms, fun for weebs of all ages! We had Eiko Yamamoto (Episode 120) on back in July of 2019. She was doing Hello Dolly and Eureka Day. Since then, she's done Working, The Book of Will, Twelfth Night and has worked with a variety of companies, including SF Playhouse, Silicon Valley Shakes, African American Shakes, The Pear Theatre, PianoFight and many, many more. Eiko will be in Steel Magnolias at the Sierra Repertory Theatre. We'll talk about how her career has grown since our last meeting, how COVID-19 has affected her and things are doing with her at home with her partner and her son. The boys take their first look at Madain Sari and phew, it's in rough condition. Home of the summoners, Eiko seems to be the last standing one. Luckily her hospitality is in full-swing and she invites everyone, or maybe just Zidane, to a delicious home cooked meal. Knowing that Kuja headed for the Iifa Tree, Eiko agrees to help the party out and tags along.

For 50 years, Eiko and her husband Koma have been pushing the edges of how we define dance movement. Join Eiko as she talks about her beginnings, process, and philosophy for making her choreographic work. Eiko discusses the work she created with Koma, her emergence as a solo artist, and the challenges of making performance art in public or in a non-proscenium environment. She shares how her relationship with dance has changed as she has grown older.
