Welcome to this special episode of China Compass, the third in a weekly series of shorter podcasts which I am calling “The Prison Pulpit”. I'm your China travel guide, Missionary Ben. You can follow me on X (@chinaadventures) where (among other things) I share a new prefecture, city and/or county to pray for daily. Visit Pray for China dot us (PrayforChina.us) to learn more. If you want to see the missionary books I’ve published and learn more about our work, you can find links to everything @ PrayGiveGo.us! Between now and the end of the year I am working through some of the writings of currently imprisoned Chinese pastor, Wang Yi, of Early Rain Covenant Church in Chengdu, Sichuan, China, which were published just after his arrest in December of 2018. One book that will be helpful in this series is my little autobiographical work, Unbeaten, which details my arrest, interrogation, and deportation from China in 2018. At the end of the book, I included an appendix entitled Remember My Chains, which is basically the manuscript (notes) from a message I have given dozens of times around the country dealing with this very topic: remembering and praying for the persecuted church, especially in China. You can get the book, Unbeaten, including the sermon, Remember My Chains, at Unbeaten dot vip. For the entire commission God has given me is to let more Chinese people know through my actions that the hope of humanity and society is only in the redemption of Christ, in the supernatural, gracious sovereignty of God. If God decides to use the persecution of this Communist regime against the church to help more Chinese people to despair of their futures, to lead them through a wilderness of spiritual disillusionment and through this to make them know Jesus, if through this he continues disciplining and building up his church, then I am joyfully willing to submit to God’s plans, for his plans are always benevolent and good.”

Part 2! Travis and Hannah continue their conversation on the Chinese Church and how what they are going through affects the church in the West. What lessons can we learn in our postmodern, comfort-addicted, materialistic, suffering-averse culture? What can we learn from our brothers and sisters on the side of the world? What role does suffering have to play in our Christian life? What role does it play in our discipleship?Hannah is the Executive Director of the Center for House Church Theology and discusses her newest book, Faithful Disobedience. Faithful Disobedience is about the Chinese House Church movement, and specifically pastor Wang Yi, who is in prison right now for speaking out against the Chinese government. He reminds us of a Chinese Dietrich Bonhoeffer. At Apollos Watered, we want to renew the church by creating missioholistic Christians, who are dedicated to accomplishing the mission of God in their specific context. Part of the missioholistic approach is bringing in global voices that help us out of our current cultural rut by showing us how they express the mission of God in their world. For decades, Christians in China have been oppressed the persecuted by a communist state. In spite of this opposition, the underground church there has continued to grow and thrive. We frequently hear the stories of their persecutions and courage, but it is a rare privilege to get to learn from the leaders of the Chinese church. That's why I am so excited about a new book called Faithful Disobedience and the opportunity to talk with the editor of this new book Hannah Nation. In this conversation, we learn about some of the leaders of the Chinese house church movement and what they believe. Hannah Nation is the managing director of the Center for House Church Theology. I originally recorded this conversation with Luke sometime last fall; however, I didn't initially upload it here because I thought I wasn't at my sharpest in this exchange. Recently, though, my reflections on Scripture have made me think of Matthew Korpman's appearance on the Reluctant Theologian podcast, on which he discussed his book Saying No to God. It was a brilliant performance, one that has had a lasting effect on me. Rather than record a new reaction to it, I thought I would air the original conversation I had with Luke about it. Luke is characteristically perceptive here, and his command of scripture shows the extent to which he has taken the Bible seriously in attempting to answer many of the same questions as Korpman. Pastor Wang Yi of the Early Rain Covenant Church was sentenced to nine years in prison last month during a secret hearing held by the Communist Party in China. Yi and his church are just part of a much larger crackdown taking place in China, whereby the government is seeking to intimidate and control Christians, Muslims, and Tibetan Buddhists. Pastor Yi prepared an inspiring “Declaration of Faithful Disobedience” sharing his determination to share the gospel even in the face of persecution at the hands of his government. Persecution of Christians is not only increasingly normal in China, it’s normal around the world. Currently 245 million Christians suffer intense persecution for their faith in Jesus. This is far from the norm in the west—we here in the US almost never worry about our well-being because of our faith. But as our society moves further away from Biblical truths, we are going to be increasingly obvious. In my opinion that’s good news because we will be even brighter lights in a darker place. But are we ready? As the apostle Peter admonishes, are we ready for the certain fiery trials that come to all Christians? If not, what can we do to prepare? The Holy Spirit pushed Peter into new things, showed him that God does not show favoritism to one group or another. What lessons does that story hold for us? In what ways are our own religious dogmas keeping us from seeing the God Beyond Religion?
